Eastasiasoft has announced a release date for its updated release of PS Vita RPG Genkai Tokki: Seven Pirates. The retitled Seven Pirates H — which is coming to Switch with various 'enhancements' in the gameplay department — is out now in Japan but is getting a worldwide release on 12th May.
Self-described as a "Booby Training RPG" — and "a traditional RPG focused on exploration and discovery with a gigantic dose of fanservice thrown in" — the new version of the 2016 original features various Switch-only elements which according to the game's official website include additions such as "using L/R sticks to control things like Booby Training and the Otton Charge" (touch controls are naturally also available) and rumble functionality for added vibes. "New flesh tone swimsuits, Booby Training limit breaks and more" are also included. More? Apparently so.
The game released in Japan back in February, and is already available for import pre-order via Play Asia (with the Limited Edition, below, being limited to 4000 copies and apparently sold out already), but a digital release in the West makes it easier than ever to get you hands on... er, we mean get to grips wi— no. Play this... video game. Yes.
You can view an (age-gated) trailer on YouTube to get an idea of what's in store if you're unfamiliar with the original RPG. Beyond that, we can supply some official PR blurb that delve into narrative details, plus a handful of the more family-friendly screenshots available below. Can't say fairer than that:
Join young pirate Parute Kairi and pervy boy monster Otton in an adventure to locate the lost treasures of the Monsupi Sea! Determined to make a legendary name for herself, Parute sets sail with a magic compass and the aid of newfound monster girl companions, but what starts as a raucous romp across uncharted islands gradually reveals something more sinister. Through their colorful encounters with rival pirates and locals in need, Parute and company learn some unsettling truths about the king who governs these waters, all leading to a confrontation that could tear their adorable crew apart!
As Parute, you’ll command your party of monster girls in combat against naughty enemies, exploiting weaknesses to gain the upper hand in turn-based combat. Adventure across islands and ride Otton to reach secret areas, gather items and enhance your abilities as you level up! With the special “Booby Training” system, you can control the bust size of the all-female crew for stat boosts, bigger for increased power and defense or smaller for improved speed and agility!
The game will hit the West on 12th May priced at US$39.99 / €39.99 / £34.99 on Switch eShop, with a 15% launch discount valid for the first three weeks.

definitely can see the vita blood in this one from those screenshots
Definitely a buy for me love fan service games
I don’t think I’ll ever get over the fact that games like this are on a Nintendo console.
There's a JG Ballard quote about any advancement in communication results in an expansion in the availability of porn.
I hope he had something like this in mind
From what I could tell it seems like it'll get boring fast for me, so, eh...
@CharlieGirl - If pandering is successful, it's called marketing. That's like saying FIFA is blatantly pandering to soccer/futball fans.
I am just more shocked the overall coverage it now gets from sites that have an open iritation about them even existing. We used to all just point, laugh, and forget it even existed.
Removed - unconstructive
I'm only here to make the obligatory "treasure chest" comment.
I clicked the article to see if I read the title correctly lol
@Paraka
Isn't pandering the legal term for pimping?
The graphics look good, but as for the rpg gameplay, don't know if it will be fun.
How do her glasses stay up, she doesn't have a nose?
Excuse me but what the frick
How many female humans worked on this game and are they okay
Can boobies be trained?
Gonna be honest, some of those chests are making me wince.
@Franklin
Clearly they can. Why else would a perfectly reasonable developer make a game focused on the training?
@Rambler - Uhh, no? You don't pay for someone to advertise something you like to yourself.
I had a friend order the collectors edition from playasia. I’m excited for this release and hope many more become available.
@Franklin
Let me ask my wife.
slap
No.
11 seconds into that trailer.
Nah.
I'm getting this. I can't be the only one who thinks these types of games are hilarious. I mean, you can make their chests shaped like footballs... or even torpedoes.
@saintsflow20 me I prefer them flat I love the buds.
Why spark the electric jester 2 got rejected but this degenerate Garbo keeps getting greenlit for switch is beyond me😑
Bleugh.
Something like this would've really shined on the 3DS, thanks to it's 3D depth. Flat 2D cleavage just isn't the same...
@CharlieGirl to each their own, mate. If you want to enjoy your pandering games, let others enjoy theirs.
Someone I know always complains there aren't more fan-service games oriented towards female players. Sure, there are the medium-fan-service games like genshin which throws in some husbandos (though fewer than waifus), but nothing at this level. She thinks the female-thirst level is under-appreciated by game companies.
That being said, some of the art is cute in this game and super silly rpg plots can be fun if done well, but the 'booby training ' sounds (and looks in the trailer) very stupid, so probably a hard pass for me.
Honestly, I'm happy that games like this are getting more coverage. I've never understood why sexual content has anywhere near as much of a stigma around it as it does, and I like that that stigma is at least slightly fading. Still don't think that I'm going to buy it, but I'm at least happy that it isn't being met with complete disgust.
@Funneefox If whatever that game was was rejected, it was probably because the port was crashing the console or something. It for sure was not content standards.
@AW1Long This is a valid question. I fear the answer, however.
Trigger bait successful. NintendoLife thanks you for the clicks!
@Paraka

Just tickled verbally that when talking about a sex game the term pandering is used. Seems appropriate
@Royalblues I guess that says a lot about how Nintendo treats third parties as a whole.
Ah yes, boobs. So scandalous. I am gonna go back to mature games where I blow people's brains out for sport because that's normal and fine.
But boobs? Gotta tip toe around that topic!
Good to see that this game is finally being released in the west.
There have been a lack of lewd games ever since the Vita died.
Just......no.
Funny, but stupid.
I'm late to the party 😧 luckily, I brought pop corn

Still would love to see Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Ignition on Switch along with many other Vita games that could use a second chance.
@Royalblues you’re missing out on a treasure trove of amazing games with this mindset but ok. Also Nintendo themselves can have rushed flimsy games like Mario golf super rush or yoshis crafted world.
Switch once again showing it’s Vita 2.0 for niche ecchi anime games while modern Sony platforms doesn’t want this game localized when this was on Vita originally lol
@FishyS I would tell them to look at the countless Otome games or games like Rune Factory V that has blatant female gamer pandering. They exist just because they are not at the quantity of male pandering games.
Preordered this back when playasia was doing free shipping on orders, should be great.
@mikegamer I did, and I want more ports of good ecchi games too
I have it preordered, very much looking forward to play it on Switch!
Boobies lol... that's it that's the comment
@Zorox88 Yeah. Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Ignition is interesting and good anime crossover fighting game. If I don't confuse, Ignition version is available only in Japan. Also, game trapped on PlayStation platforms. These facts makes me sad.
@FishyS I doubt there would be a very big market for that although it would be interesting to see a poll on how many female gamers would like that kind of game
@AW1Long The game atleast have female voice actresses, dunno how many of the devs are female but there are no reason to assume they are not ok just because they are working on a amazing game
I need to get something off my chest... it’s hard to keep abreast of all of these fan service games for which I feel a burning in the bosom to possess.
I’ll be sure to nip off to the shops to pick up a copy in a mutual exchange of tit for tat.
@Rambler - #3 is basically marketing all encompassing.
@SmaggTheSmug I'm too here to say I'm here to say that "Pirate booty" comment.
@Silly_G i'm sure you will rub the mods the wrong way 😂
It's a game catered to a niche genre know as ecchi (go search it), it's not meant to be a game for everyone or for people who think they like anime just because they watched naruto or dragon ball z and nothing else.
If you have no interest in anime or know the anime tropes by now then don't bother commenting as its clear this game isn't for you, but obviously you want to get your comment in towards some controversy
I will get the game, but not at that price. It will definitely be on sale after a couple of months as with all the other anime games on the switch
@SmaggTheSmug I'll improve on you comment by saying "booby trapped treasure chest"
@Heavyarms55 Well, it's like how a character in a show or game can make a mildly suggestive comment and it's considered highly offensive/inappropriate, but then a show about literal serial killing for pleasure doesn't get an eye blink. It does seem a hair backward.
@AW1Long I don't know if you follow Vtubers at all but a majority of the characters, lewd and all, are drawn by female artists. Same goes with a lot of manga.
Things are just... different in Japan. When they see an image of a big breasted girl they don't think that some woman somewhere was oppressed to create it, they think "that's some nice art" and then go about their day. This sort of game just isn't a big deal over there. They censor intense violence and gore though, which honestly makes more sense to me.
That is so gross. Why don’t they make a game like this about males so they know how it feels?
Bring over Monster Monpiece and Valkyrie Drive Bikhuni next 👍
@UltimateOtaku91 we pulling the "fake fan" card now...?
@somebread just saying this game isn't aimed at those who only watch shonen like naruto, dragon ball z, one piece etc but for people who like anime as a whole from the silly isekai and ecchi to slice of life, school and romantic comedies
For example if the only anime someone has watched was dragon ball z then they can't call themsleves a fan of anime, they are a fan of dragon ball z
@UltimateOtaku91 if people can be fans of books without reading romantic novels, and fans of music without liking rap or country, people can be fans of anime without liking ecchi/isekais/etc.
@Ryu_Niiyama I typed out a whole synopsis of a male equivalent to this game, then I realised that posting it would definitely get me modded >_<
@somebread yes but this game isn't aimed at those who only like anime like dragon ball z and naruto, that was my point.
My other comment about people not being a fan of anime was aimed at what you said to me in your previous comment about me calling people a "fake fan".
If someone watched and liked dragon ball z but never watched another anime woukd you still call them a fan of anime? Or a fan of dragon ball z?
I'm gay so I won't get much enjoyment from this but I'll probably get it for my friend lol
This is uh… Really something.
I wish the boobs system in this game was more integrated into the actual gameplay.
It would be more interesting if your boobs affected monster behavior, or if monsters or items could affect your boobs. Or if your boobs' properties could unlock certain paths, treasures, fights... orr just anything really. RIght now your boobs don't really do much in the game, which is a shame considering how much emphasis this game places on the booby training system.
As the game currently stands, the booby training system is just a fancy interface for choosing which stats you want to level up.
...and interface that takes the form of touching boobs.
Overall it's a fun RPG with a fun rarely-seen ecchi twist with the boobs system...but I just wish they made the extra effort and went further with it to integrate it into the game more than it currently is.
@FishyS - That's sort of easy to answer; Though you may say it's underappreciated, the ones that exist don't make much dent in sales. So in response, less are simply made.
Don't make hotdogs that sell 10 when your tacos sell 80.
"but a digital release in the West makes it easier than ever to get you hands on"
This makes me feel like not everyone is aware that, given the switch is region free, you can make an account where you give your location as Japan to have access to the Japanese eshop (or any other region).
It used to be a challenge finding a way to make the payment, but now there are plenty of sites where you can buy digital gift cards for any eshop.
@Ryu_Niiyama If they made a game like this but with dudes as the target, I don't believe they'd get offended or up in arms about it at all. Now, Im not trying to discredit your opinion or feelings (this is a subject with a lot of nuance and perspective that can't be done justice in just one comment), but I do thing you severely overestimate how much the sexualization of guys would affect other guys.
I would consider buying if there wasn’t any Chibi characters in it. God I hate chibi...
@UsurperKing I don’t care if it bothers men; that’s the point as they don’t care if it bothers women. Granted I disagree with you as nightwing and spiderman are often sexualized with hilarious results from some men. All I want is if people are gonna perv, perv both ways. Make games where you are enlarging some dude’s groin. Men should have to be bombarded with media that is just as voyeuristic, degrading, sexually overt, unrealistic and puerile as women. I don’t want to play them, I just want them to exist. And perv on little boys too since games love to feature underaged/young adolescent girls for perv fodder. Males should be treated like sex objects the same (as in exploitive and made vulnerable) as females.
@Ryu_Niiyama They do. Look at all the Otome games with Shota pandering. This isn’t a “why does this not happen to men!” scenario.
I promise you Japanese developers panders to a wide range of demographics and fetishes if you actually look. There are plenty of perverted women just like men that buys niche anime games like these that has small cute shota boys and shirtless pretty men.
@Franklin aren't there....training bras🤣
@Arawn93 shirtless is not the same on men as it is on women. A man can walk outside with no shirt on and be ok, if I do it and I am not on a nude beach I risk being arrested or worse. My point is the same type of exploitation should be done if it is going to be done at all.
Games like these where they would randomly show up in an Etika stream. I miss those times
@Arawn93
Yeah like you said they do it for different audiences. which is why you often see patterns in how things are handled in Otome games various tropes, character designs and the like due to it being what their audience likes and what they would want to play (along with the more niche stuff as you mentioned) rather than just being the same kind of tropes with the sexes reversed.
@Ryu_Niiyama @UsurperKing
Just a follow up to some of the things you are saying ...
You can't compare what's acceptable in one culture to what's acceptable in another, and the mindsets are completely different and mostly unrelatable.
First, fan service has nothing to do with the sexualization of woman in Japan because the line between cartoon people and real people is extremely firm and well defined. You can buy a comic at a normal store anyone can go into (although it will be in an 18+ section) that depicts the graphic rape and murder of children and there are long running sex comics with DVD movies attached that focus on characters under the age of 10, but that in NO WAY translates to an acceptance of the sexual abuse of REAL children.
It is generally the case in Japan that fantasy is WAY more accepted in it is in the West. Perving over a schoolgirl is completely unacceptable and a sure way to face social isolation, but perving over a adult in a schoolgirl uniform pretending to be a schoolgirl is fine, as are cartoon schoolgirls.
This is further illustrated in the fact that almost no characters in this game or games like it are HUMAN. They are almost exclusively monster girls or mystical humanlike creatures. Although they don't get ported, games that feature entirely male casts that focus on both heterosexual and homosexual erotica are extremely common. There is almost no exclusively homosexual female content because most woman in games like this only show outward affection towards other woman unless your POV character is male (although they will TALK about relationships with men).
So the idea that men don't have to deal with the same type of media portrayal is completely inaccurate, in the context of the culture that creates this content. You can't go into a Manga store without seeing posters of oiled up men in thongs. Games that depict sexual contact with underage boys are common. You can buy candy shaped like a realistic penis. There is a penis day festival where people dress up like penises and there are giant penis floats.
All that's happening here is the Western market isn't porting much of that because it would be unprofitable and/or break laws. The argument becomes "publishers should ALSO localize and release male focused games even though they will lose millions"
That's a hard position to argue.
@Ryu_Niiyama
You are falling into the trap on zero-sum rights. Equality is NEVER about taking away the rights of one group, it's about GIVING rights to the oppressed group.
The feminist position here is not that we should stop the sexualization of woman in video games, but that we should equalize the presence of strong and non-sexualized woman in video games to the point where they are as common as men. Woman should have the opportunity to see positive role-models in every aspect of media, including video games, while men (and woman) should have the opportunity to sexualize woman (and men) because sexy time is fun. These are NOT mutually exclusive.
The problem isn't that right now you can do the second one, it's that right now you CAN'T do the first one. That's what needs to change.
@HeadPirate I appreciate you taking the time to write out and explain a different perspective and cultural take on the subject! I will admit that I am not well versed in the culture of Japan or anything related to their anime and manga, but I knew there had to be some sort of nuance to the subject that wasn't fully being addressed. I was wondering if there could've been a business reason for us not seeing this sort of media as prevalently in the West, which you've shown as quite a staunch factor.
I don't really want to get into this conversation any further, I feel we're on the verge of fully derailing this thread, but again thanks for throwing in some more nuance to the conversation! Maybe someone else could learn a thing or two about Japan's culture as I have this day.
Hmmmmm...I watched some gameplay of it. I like what I see except...that it looks like all monsters can be killed with one hit. That's tragic. Gives the impression of zero challenge. Sigh
@GundamExia I don't see one chibi character in it. I'm not sure you know what chibi characters are.
@HeadPirate what rights are being taken away from men? None. No part of my post is about the ideal of equality because there is nothing good about reducing women to sexual objects for straight male sexual gratification (for that matter I wouldn’t go into a detailed discussion about equality on a gaming fan site anyway). However it isn’t going anywhere so men might as well as be stuck with it too. This has nothing to do with profit or culture (beyond human culture and not western culture as you are trying to contend…men do this to women in every culture) or I would have argued from that point. You are trying to make my comment into something it is not.
I think female objectification sucks but short of the human species being lobotomized it isn’t going anywhere. Fine. Then men should have to be subjected to it as well with the same social equivalent as well (that’s why the no shirt men thing doesn’t work). That’s how I feel about it. Full stop. And I am done. I would like to have left my one liner expressing my annoyance which changes nothing and left it at that. Y’all are the ones that keep dragging this out. Also you are in absolutely no position to dictate to me about equality.
@AW1Long You would probably be surprised, but a lot of these sexy character designs are made by women. Bayonetta is probably the most famous example. A lot of abuse hentai is drawn by women too.
Japanese sex culture is much different to the West, especially puritan-raised America, where companies like Blizzard champion "social justice" in their games while actually abusing their female employees.
@Ryu_Niiyama I remember last Indie Direct having a game where a woman is turning sexy men into weapons? You don't get more objectification than turning into literal objects
There's also a few otome VNs on Switch too. Yeah, it's not the same as a game about "training boobs", but guess what, in general women are turned on by different things than men. Case in point: there really isn't an equivalent of "50 Shades of Grey" for men that is anywhere as famous.
@LillianC14 If I remember correctly from the Vita version, you can keep the characters flat instead of using the booby training, so I don't think you would need to see the boobs in the game if you don't wish to.
@SmaggTheSmug I was just making a similar point about 50 Shades of Grey and Twilight yesterday. Media aimed at men and media aimed at women are different because of what mainstream men/women are into in a given cultural environment. Like @HeadPirate was saying, why would developers/publishers make an equivalent of this game for women when it wouldn't sell? It's the same for movies, books, etc. It's not like men are going out in droves to read a male equivalent of 50 Shades, Twilight, 365 Days, After, etc. I know I wouldn't.
Aside from some conservative nutjobs, I don't see men running around trying to be offended by smut aimed at women. If women wanted some smutty games, I'm sure they would develop their own, like that Boyfriend Dungeon game. Sure it's not as smutty as something like this, but as you said @SmaggTheSmug, how much more objectification can you have than literally turning people into objects?
@Heavyarms55
Aren't there loads of studies on the effects of violence in computer games? They wouldn't have come out of a vacuum.
Not disagreeing with you (I gave up on the Last of Us when I had to smash someone's face in), but I'm sure computer violence has been a hot topic for ages.
I also remember reading a discussion on sexism in a computer games magazine in the late 80s, so this is nothing new.
Anyways GTA combines the two and that's a mega seller!
@Ryu_Niiyama You should do your research before you argue about equality here. I love these type of games male or female. In my experience there are way more otome games geared towards straight women (or gay males). My favorite gal games are made by straight women who appreciate the female body. They also have a sense of humor. Also if we just normalize shirtless women it would solve your issue right?
@Ryu_Niiyama
Your viewpoint doesn't account for the possibility of sex work by choice. The voice actress in these games, the female animators on staff, the woman who model for games, and even the legal sex workers in Japan would have a bit of an issue with the idea that they are being "sexualized" and the assumption that they have to be doing it FOR men, without agency of their own.
Why can't a female game developer make an interactive game using sexual images of herself simply because that's what she wants to do? Why can't a female voice actress chose to do voice acting in pornographic games because that's what they enjoy? Why can't a model enjoy providing either reference work for animated games or images for non-animated games? Why can't a female animator enjoy drawing highly sexual images of women?
Would you argue that a professional chef is only doing that job to gratify people eating their food and takes no personal enjoyment in cooking?
This isn't "going anywhere" because you are limiting yourself to a paradigm that doesn't include woman who enjoy sex, want to be part of this sector of game development, and chose this line of work despite other options. The idea that only reason a woman would involve herself in producing fan service, soft core, or pornographic games is for the gratification of men is the root inequality you need to let go of if you want to better understand this issue. We can't tell someone that they shouldn't be able to sell their body or sexual images of it because some people find images of their bodies offensive.
You might want to play some of the newer games in the Yakuza series. They capture positive sex work very well, with the male protagonist often trying to "save" woman from work it turns out they are choosing to do, while having fully developed sex workers as characters (some even playable). They also more accurately portray sex roles in Japan then any other game I can think of.
@UsurperKing
I'm extremely glad to have provided some insight you found useful. Thank you for letting me know.
@Tobiaku Sad lol
@lolwhatno We are teaching kids (and parents) to follow the age rating. Do you want consoles to only have 3+ rated games to make it impossible for a kid to get scared no matter what their parents buy them?
Honestly makes me sad to see things like this on a Nintendo console. I know that art takes many forms, but objectification and sexualization of characters with the appearance of minors is never going to be something that I'm okay with.
That's not even considering how the casual objectification of women is flaunted in "games" like this.
@lolwhatno Good luck trying to enforce that in the era when you can get games on online outlets like Amazon hassle free or lie about age on Nintendo Eshop to just download anything
Days are long gone where a GameStop employee denies a 12 year old from buying a M rated game when he is by himself as the “think of the children!” primary line of defense lol
Kids already play GTA V which is way way way worse then this game from a “morale” perspective. Your trying to use a bucket to stop a ship that has long since sunk.
Some of these comments in this article is interesting though. It’s perfectly OK when games pander to their own interests [murder simulators, drug simulators, actual sex scenes, when males get sexualized, etc] but when it doesn’t pander to them then it’s “bad” and try to use the “morale” high-ground argument of all things in a system like the Switch where I have Saint Rows games and GTA games lol.
Where is the comment outcry here when Aksys brings Otome games to Switch that sexualizes/objectifies men because that panders to a specific audience as well? Lol.
There is always hypocritical people here coming out of the woodwork trying to be “holier then thou” every time these types of games are announced in the West
@lolwhatno
There is no nudity, implied or graphic sexual contact, no sexual language outside of some double entendre, there are no sexual encounters or conquest as part of the plot in any way, there are no mature romantic or sexual story points.
An inworld ability allows you to change the bust size of your characters. If you have a large chest, you are slower and more defensive. A small chest makes you faster and more agile.
So please help me to understand what is such a threat here. Is it that you think acknowledging that the female body includes breasts and that large breasts can be a hindrance to mobility is too much to handle?
Or is it that a cartoon rendition of outfits no more revealing then a bathing suit or gym cloths is going to cause some kind of damage?
I also notice that you comment on games like resident evil without any call for increased parental controls. Can you please help me to understand why graphic violence, decapitation, gun use, drug use, and dismemberment do not bother you as much as revealing clothing?
@Jireland92 I have to agree with you. I was a little kid in the eighties and an adolescent and a teen in the nineties, when Nintendo were censorship happy moral prudes that censored content in localizations of Japanese games, or just refused to allow them to be sold in America. It used to make me so angry and filled with such righteous indignation that it is one of the reasons (along with all the great JRPGs) that I stopped supporting Nintendo and jumped ship to Sony when the PSX came out. And now Nintendo has games like this, and Sony is the one censoring content after moving to Commiefornia. We might be living in the darkest timeline, but it can be an entertaining one.
@lolwhatno
To be fair there's not much people can do when it comes to parents buying the game, there are age ratings and parental controls to prevent kids and teenagers from buying the games directly so the responsibility is entirely on the parents themselves to regulate what media their kids have access to, and there is a lot of information available to allow them to make an informed decision (especially with the internet)
as you said though the fact is that some parents will buy the games regardless and that is an unfortunate part of society, the most others can do is help keep parents informed and even then there will be those who will just ignore or not care, then we end up with some misinformation filled scare story on the TV news (like the mass effect sex one from a good while back)
@lolwhatno
First off, thank you for engaging in a real conversation. It's rare and refreshing.
Second, I don't agree with that statement, no. I was born in Canada, spent my late teens all over the US, worked in the UK for a bit, and now time is split between Japan and Canada. What I've learned is that while the bogymen and the ways we "must" protect children from them very dramatically in every culture, the end result is never that different. Children who grow up where 12 year olds walk topless on beaches, where they see sexual ads and nudity on build boards and TV, and where the age of consent is 13 or 14 don't have any more or less mental derangement, damage, or lack of a moral campus then the ones who grow up in the parts of the US where they ban books because they use the anatomically correct names for genitals and mothers groups protest depictions of children in anything less then a Hijab.
What f's children (and the sociality as a whole) RIGHT up is demonizing sexual desire and expression. Teaching people that their natural feelings and impulses are "wrong" because of some made up concept of innocence or telling them that if they SEE or want to fantasise about a thing that makes them bad people who need to be fixed is what leads to psychopaths and a broken society. People are more healthy sexually, more open and accepting of others with different moral views and more confident with their own body and uniqueness when media allows open and honest depictions of sexuality, even extreme ones.
Given it's video games that dominate the entertainment of young people today, I think what's acceptable in video games has a big impact. Look at a game like "Bravely default". In Japan, the characters are 13-17, and they explore themes of love, sexual desire, and coming of age ... because, ya know, I just described the life every 14 year old. Even though there is NOTHING even close to sexual in the game, simply because there is non-graphic talk of sexual desire they are aged up to adults outside of Japan. It's silly, anyone with near-human intelligence will clearly understand these are teens because nothing else is changed. It's literally just changing a number so people don't freak out, and I think that shows that outrage is reactive, not based in logic or reason.
Personally I think it's extremely healthy to have a young person see this and understand that, yes, this is a natural part of being that age. But I understand and respect cultural differences and the right to educate children as you see fit. This means accurate ratings and strong prerenal controls, but not censorship or exclusion. If it was up to me I would allow 18+ games on the eshop, that way an overly conservative view isn't being imposed on anyone while people who want to control what their children see can still do so.
If putting in the effort to make sure the controls are working, following up and monitoring content, and having discussion with your children about what they should and shouldn't play is too much effort for a parent, maybe don't have kids? This is like bare minimum effort; if they are not doing this, then I can assure you they are seeing and doing more in the real world then they are going to encounter in any game.
In Japan, you can buy porn games going all the way back to the famicom. Parents make sure to buy games they are okay with their children playing, and playing games with your kids is part of the culture. They have conversations about why female characters are often sexualized in mainstream games. In the US and most of the West, games are heavily censored. Parents generally don't engage with their children to understand what they are playing and why. They refuse to have honest and realistic conversations about sex and sexuality in media because children are too "innocent". This illustrates a HUGE problem that needs to be fixed ... but it sure as heck isn't the games.
@HeadPirate While I agree with your post, I could be wrong about this but isn't the porn games on Famicom unofficial / bootleg whatever you want to call games not endorsed by Nintendo? I know Japan have eroge on computers, but as far as I know Nintendo has never allowed full eroge. And if they did, when they stop and start demanding all ages version instead of the uncensored 18+ versions?
@Tobiaku
You're correct, they were unlicensed ... but they were available for sale. I didn't bring it up because I'm not really talking about Nintendo, but you're right that it might be important to note.
At the same time, when you do speak of Nintendo's early days in gaming, it's really, important to remember they were the "Nintendo playing care company" up until '63 and made basically all their profit off two product lines; A licence with Disney in Japan to make western style playing cards as well as Hanafuda cards they sold in Japan, and playing cards with topless women on the back they exported to the West.
It was the '83 crash that lead to the "Seal of Quality", and a push from the head of marketing at Nintendo of America (I wish I could remember her name, she's basically the reason gaming survived the 80s in NA) that turned that into a family focused ideology that lead to the 10NES chip. It wasn't on the Japanese system so there was a market for unlicensed games, and I think if it wasn't for the dominance of the NA market Nintendo would have allowed ergoe ... but who can say. They did put a sexy girl easter egg in one of the first games they released for the system, after all (if you don't count all the arcade ports)..
@HeadPirate Had to ask since you spesifically mentioned Famicom. Fun fact, Famicom disk system has a dating sim made by Nintendo. Dunno how ecchi it is, but they made it
@Tobiaku
It was tame, but that idol is family friendly so ecchi was never an option. Can you believe that game had network support? It used a fax based system to register high scores to a network (although for that game I think it just was that you beat it), one of the billion add-ons for the system.
Also I think Square made it. Maybe Nintendo was the publisher?
I've never played it, I just remember this because it's considered by some to be the first dating sim and collecting useless game knowledge is like my whole bag.
