Update [Wed 13th Jul, 2022 09:30 BST]: Modder Xanman has taken to Twitter saying that his original comments — specifically "It’s become way clearer that this game is absolute s***" — was "a huge exaggeration on my part".
Linking to VGC's coverage of his comments, he goes on to say "Origins is fine imo. It does what it set out to do, has some issues, but nothing that really affects the game".
Original Story [Tue 12th Jul, 2022 10:45 BST]: While Sonic Origins offers a convenient way to play the hedgehog's most celebrated 16-bit outings on modern consoles, many veterans fans haven't been satisfied with the quality of the versions included in the collection. The game boasts various enhancements such as widescreen support and new gameplay modes, but also introduces errors, inconsistencies, inaccuracies, and behaviours that some die-hard Sonic fans aren't happy about.
The latest dissatisfied voice from the Sonic fan community is that of Xanman, creator of BetterOrigins, a mod for the PC version of the game which aimed to fix various errors and improve the overall quality (thanks, TheGamer).
However, having gone through the game's files, Xanman has decided to halt work on the mod entirely. "Hey, so we decided to stop the development of this project," Xanman wrote on the mod's GameBanana page:
"After really digging into the files for this game, it's become way clearer that this game is absolute s***. We've fixed enough where the game is a bit more serviceable but really, especially without scripts, there's not a whole lot we can 'fix' without just redoing sprites."
"MAYBE I'll come back to this in the future, when script editing becomes a thing. But for now, screw this game."
It's not just the fan community that has voiced its dissatisfaction with the final product. Headcannon's Simon Thornley, who worked on the Sonic 3 & Knuckles part of the collection, took to Twitter recently to voice his frustrations, and also provide partial explanations as to how these issues arose.
For a better idea of the types of issues the BetterOrigins mod fixed, here's a list of patch notes from Update 1.5 as per the mod's GameBanana Updates page:

We called the game "a fine collection for new fans, less so for the hardcore Sonic crowd" in our 7/10 review of the Switch version. While it functions well enough for more casual fans just dipping their toe into Sonic's original 16-bit catalogue, it's clear that many believe these vintage platformers deserved more care and attention — especially with these being the nominal 'ultimate' versions of the games, according to Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka.

Oh dear, that is more than a few problems there. Sounds like a cheap and sloppy rushed job to milk Sonic for all he's worth (ew that sounded better in my head, but kept it in for comedy effect)
It shouldn't have to fall upon the fans to fix the issues with the games. SEGA needs to do better and ship products of a better standard; giving the developers the time they need to do the work and deliver something they can be proud of.
You can really tell the Simon Thornly (Stealth) and his team at Headcannon were really passionate about this project, and wanted to do more.
It always seems like the people who make the money, care the least about the source material, the artist, the creator, the fans… as a Michael Jackson fan, his Estate sometimes seem to care more about capitalising and profiting, instead of preserving and respecting his life’s work and his fans.
How do you possibly mess up the original Sonic Trilogy? Those games (with the exception of 3) have been ported to damn near everything in the past.
@Luminous117 @Fizza
The games were rebuilt in the same engine as Sonic Mania, called Retro Engine (aka RSDK).
The previous projects like Sonic 1 and 2 for Android, or Mania itself, SEGA of Japan were more hands-off.
For Sonic Origins however, SEGA of Japan's developers seemingly tampered with the previous work done by Simon Thornly, Christian Whitehead, and their team, and did a shoddy job of it.
By tampering, I mean stuff like adding in the drop dash, adding in the COINS system, inserting overlays for the pause menu or retry when you fail a special stage, etc.
Things that the Retro Engine developers probably could've done themselves.
Sonic Mania is unique in that the game is purely made in Retro Engine, Sonic Origins is not.
@Fizza @Luminous117 There was a game called Sonic Genesis on the GBA. This was a port of Sonic 1. Fairly simple thing.
To do it, they took the Genesis code and put it in the Sonic Advance engine, and as we know the games in that series are...remarkably different.
In doing this the cheap and easy way, SEGA ended up with the worst running version of Sonic 1.
And then Stealth went and proved it could have been done properly anyway.
So that's how you screw it up. Be SEGA.
Can say what you want about Nintendo being port lazy, but their products generally function as they should at least and not anything like this. Yikes.
The game is fine - the first Sonic was the first game I ever played, and I've thoroughly enjoyed playing through them all (15+ hours) without any technical issues whatsoever. it is no surprise that the Sonic community, which has been infamously vocal, are complaining about some largely minor inaccuracies.
@Bunkerneath there is almost no comparison between this and the GTA Trilogy.
GTA crashed constantly, had flickering and accessibility issues, ran at sub-20 fps, had assets clipping and holes in the floor.
According to those (very detailed) patch notes, Sonic has a couple inaccurate pixels. I'm not sure how that compares.
@MaxiPareja Yeah I feel the same way. I've done those games (except Sonic CD) a good number of times from the Megadrive to the various previous ports.
Done story mode up to halfway of Sonic 3&K, and the only thing truly broken I've noticed is an issue with Tails getting stuck instead of respawning on Sonic 2. Most of this patch notes looks like no one but diehard fans would even notice.
Tbh I think this collection gets too much hate. Sure, there is a lot to complain about if you're a hardcore fan (myself included), but this is still the best official way to play all of these games imo. It is certainly better than the originals and my only complaint would be that they've not done enough when remastering and repackaging them.
That said, at over £30, and this being a collection of 4/(5) 90s games without a somewhat archaic save system...is it appealing to anyone who isn't already a hardcore Sonic fan?
The games are absolutely fine, no one notices these things nor cares but the try hards want the attention no matter what.
Isn't this the same SEGA that released a measly four old Sonic games on a DS cart using a homebrew emulator and had the audacity to charge money for it?
Sega surely could have done better, but still I will buy those games and enjoy them. So far I only played Sonic 2 with NSO. I am happy there is an option for unlimited tries.
It's arguable these bugs affect players differently. Some of them won't notice anything while others will dish out whatever hate they feel while voicing their frustration by the game's unfinished state. The great problem for me is Sega keeping silent, apparently not worrying about anything other than getting their money. Once they sold consoles, now they just sell games. If they keep their business this way, within some years they'll be selling nothing
Sad that the Wii Virtual Console ports were higher quality
I've had a great time with it personally. The only issue that got a little annoying was Tails getting stuck and constantly jumping for the rest of the stage in 2. Other than that though I think it's excellent. This is coming from someone who grew up on these games too though I was always kind of terrible at them as a kid and never finished them. Thank God for anniversary mode!
@retroman64 this is objectively untrue.
@MaxiPareja For what, £30, £35 (or even more? Doesn't the game have even more expensive """"collectors"""" digital editions?), I would expect some rereleases of like 20 year old Megadrive games to not have as many issues as it does, even if they are minor and not game breaking.
I'm sure they're playable and I would also like to have these games on the go, but I also don't want to drop money on such overpriced old games that don't even run as intended.
I can see why certain fans are incredibly vocal. It's not like SEGA do well with modern Sonic releases, now they're dropping the ball with old classics where most of the work was already done for them.
The saving grace is that this is not the worst example of Sega screwing up the Genesis/Mega Drive classics:
People are surprised that a sonic game is broken, loaded with bugs and unfinished? Shocking...
These guys havent put out a good sonic games in decades.
Even Sonic Mania Was a Fan project at first and then got adapted into an official title under the lead of a Fan.
Lets hope New sonic is at least playable.
This is one of the reasons Sega lost to Nintendo long term, basic QC. That saddens me as a long-time Sega fan when I was full-time Sega Mania Mode from 1991-2001(but still bought every single Nintendo game I wanted on the side)
Very very sad. :/
This isn't surprised anymore Sega always has way to screw up with Sonic first with Sonic colours there was issues and now with orgins they rushed release it just for cash grab its sad in a way they screwed with Sonic 3. This is why I can't be hyped for Sonic Frontier watch they be issues and they wonder why fans are worried because they keep messing up dont want it be another Sonic 06 disaster.
That is, really, really sad, but it’s sega, so why am I not surprised, if they screw of frontiers too, hey, at least It wouldn’t be out of character for them.
@bluemage1989 wrong the developer behind Sonic 3 port and Sonic Mania is not happy with state of things. You clearly are happy to settle for mediocrity.
I'm playing these right now. If you ... I don't know why you would, mind you, but if you want to just play and enjoy some sonic games, they are really fun and this is a great collection.
But if you're a REAL fan, and you want to go though the game frame be frame, pausing every time a new pixie shows up so you can take to reddit about how THE COLORS ARE SLIGHTLY WRONG or how THE WAY THE GAME HANDLES SPRIT LIMITS IS SLIGHTLY OFF .. well I guess these games are great for that too.
So win-win, I guess?
In short, in a world where your only two choices are release a game that is absolute and total garbage the fan base HATES because it's just a lazy pixel for pixel port of the original or release a game that is absolute and total garbage the fan base HATES because it changes some pixels, they went for the second option. And if you don't have some mega-true-fan telling you why these games suck and you suck for liking them ... they are a absolute blast, and this package is great.
It's wierd how you can mess it up - as ppl are pointing out on here.
It would be great if eventually we got a physical release that is completely (or at least mostly) fixed...
I think it'd be significantly more surprising if a Sonic game was released in a state where it actually worked as anticipated. They've been messing this series up some way or another consistently for like 25 years at this point.
There is nothing wrong with Sonic games, I simply don't enjoy them so I skipped Origins too. But a quick glance on that patch notes and it seems most of it was graphical and many of them really small? I can understand it pissing off old school players but it's not like the game is total garbage
@bluemage1989 Did you even READ the article?
@Mikey_205 Nah bro be real 99.99% of people who bought this couldn't care less about whether Sonic CDs title screen has been cleaned up nor any of the other minor bugs these games have. The truth is that the constant desire to find reasons to be angry and an inability to handle anything that isn't completely perfect destroys people like Xanman's ability to just enjoy things and try hards like yourself who pander to them are no better. Go have a word with yourself.
@MaxiPareja the problem is how much they're asking for a product that clearly wasn't given the time and care if needed.
That and the fact that they made it difficult to play the old games in other ways by delisting them. It seems they tend to do that when they know their version is worse.
@Ruler-Of-All-Evil nah bro I just like to come straight to the comment section and have a laugh at the Captial G Gamers.
This is partially why I would rather buy the Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium's $40 Pack than Sonic Origins. I honestly don't really need the games, since three of them are on my SEGA Genesis Mini. I just hope the Genesis 2 Mini makes it to America, so I can have Sonic CD on a stock emulator, instead of resorting to RetroArch on my Mini. I don't have the patience to learn the majority of the button combination shortcuts.
That’s hilarious. Just do a solid port of Generations and be done with it.
Most fixes seem just pixel related and backgrounds and icons… but the fact that there’s so many small improvements to be made in this rather highly priced collection just feels plain wrong. Whether you care or not, this shouldn’t be such a shoddy porting job.
@locky-mavo And how would you improve on that for the Switch? I can't help but feel that the Post-Credits Scene might have been a hint of how it could've had DLC planned, involving Modern Metal Sonic, and playable Classic Tails and Classic Knuckles, with Shadow and Blaze for Modern stages. Might even throw in Tikal showing up to give the Sonics the power of the Super Emeralds.
Unless you wanna go with the Phantom Ruby cop-out that Classic Eggman uses to go back and kickstart the events of Sonic Mania, and by extension, Sonic Forces.
Anyone remember this?
https://www.siliconera.com/sonic-the-hedgehog-games-in-development-for-longer-for-quality-reasons/
We're hearing how Stealth and his team had to rush development of Origins, and the state of Frontiers isn't looking great while Sega keeps saying they're aiming for a 2022 release.
In other words, guess Sega lied...
@NicolausCamp Word to the Wise: Stick to the Blue Bomber! I hear the MegaMan Battle Network Legacy Collection is gonna be great!
@Buizel It’s far from a bad collection, it just needs a heck ton of polish
Well... damn... Maybe Sega will fix the problems. Remember how everyone thought NSO Expansion Pass's N64 emulation would never get fixed? Nintendo listened and fixed the service to the point that it is damn near perfect emulation... but... I guess this could be what "Nintendo is what Sega isn't".
@YoshiAngemon I mean that's fair but did Capcom really put as much efforts into their collections as this?? People are complaining about the execution, but to also be fair to SEGA they did WAY more than any other company. New animated cutscenes for each game, making all the games native widescreen OR 4:3 (user choice!), a fun mission mode, added new moves to the game!, restored the SEGA CD intro, great save system that allows you to save per character, let's you play the games connected as one giant run!, new blue sphere stages!, premium songs in the museum (these are fully orchestraed songs from the series), added a way to quickly replay special Stages, fun islands front menu that has all the characters running around.
Capcom is going to take the ROMS and throw them on a cartridge. And people will be happy with this. But let's not mistake the effort here over what Capcom will do.
The only real issue I had when playing through the games again is that the bonus levels in Sonic 2 were harder due to the differences in controls compared to the originals. You'd think it would be easier since the scrolling is smoother but the controls felt... floaty?
Anyway, fix these graphical things if you must, but just give me a stage select on the main menu instead of having to input a unique code in-game, and I'll be happy. Oh, and add Knuckles Chaotix in a future update.
@bluemage1989 Yeah no there are number of glitches that directly affect gameplay like dissapearing emeralds. That NEEDS to be patched.
Even if its only graphical things away from game breaking bugs making it unplayable (all Cyberpunk) im not really interested in the collection anyways, as it seems a lot for basically a few ports of sonic games that are quite a few years old and are already on multiple systems now anyways. Ill only bite if it goes dirt cheap (like £7) in a sale.
I can see why die hard fans are angry though.
I've beaten and gotten the good endings in all of them except the and Knuckles part of 3, and haven't noticed any problems so.... Alright then.
This game is BLEEP. I mean this could have been perfect but as usual Sega only care about money and meeting deadlines rather than customers.
Terrible just terrible.
@pspooky So Tails didn't get stuck in Sonic 2 then with the sound of him jumping forever? Chaos Emeralds didn't disappear? you didn't skip s chunk of the game by warping to Hidden Palace from the beginning of Mushroom Hill by jumping into the Special Stage Ring? if not then Idk. You're just lucky I guess.
Can't say I'm surprised by any of this.
I honestly didn't notice a single issue with any of the games compared to their original releases other than the butchered sonic 3 music. This seems like alot of nitpicking to me.
@Buizel Sonic 1 2 and CD on Mobile are better than this. If you own the original Sonic 3 and Knuckles on Steam you can play Sonic 3 AIR which not only functions as intended it has a lot more options too.
Origins is just embarrassing tbh.
@Truegamer79 you are spot on seems like a lot of bandwagon jumping here. I enjoyed the games and didn’t have any errors when playing.
@Freakservo Good point. This means we didn't get certain melodies that were only featured in Sonic 3- I'm not even talking about the replaced level themes, I mean the Knuckles entrance music and invincibility music. Conversely, the 1-up theme for S&K was absent in favor of the Sonic 3 version. So while Sonic 3 & Knuckles are meant to be played together, stuff is left out because of it.
Ya, um... I personally haven't bought the game yet because I'm waiting for a sale but I doubt the game can be written off as "CRAP". Like, crap would be if the game crashed constantly and froze and didn't save properly and sound cut out and music stopped at random times and there was slowdown.
The game sounds to be running just fine. The DLC confusion and stupidity of what you actually get with said DLC and the lack of original music for those few select zones are questionable of course but otherwise, this is the best way to play the games, people.
I still want a Sonic Mania 2 though.. Maybe someday that will come and then I'll be STOKED.
I'll buy Origins when it hits $29.99, probably around holiday sales. $39.99 seems like a bit much...
Sonic 3&K is (objectively) the only game in the collection with game-changing issues, and that's the only part of the collection that deserves to be criticized. Everything else is phenomenal and works as it should. I've been playing the game for at least 15 hours and haven't encountered a single issue in the other three games. This part of the fandom that's oh-so-ready to call a game "absolute sh*t" because of minor sprite inaccuracies and that's just as ready to sh*t on SEGA when they don't deserve it as when they do is the main reason why the general gaming community's opinions on the Sonic franchise and the developers that work on its games haven't changed yet. If we want to give Sonic the renaissance he deserves by the time Frontiers comes out, we need to start disowning these people and taking their opinions with at least a few more grains of salt. It's high time this fandom started being a bit more grateful.
"I realized that I was in way over my head on this project, so I've decided to just blame the game and bail instead of taking responsibility or improving my skillset. Cheers!"
I guess I'll still be waiting for the day someone fixes the special board's music not correctly speeding up when it should.
Sega got it right on the Saturn with Sonic Jam. It speaks to the carelessness of modern game development.
@Bunkerneath Nah absolutely nothing like GTA which (and I haven't played it) was apparently unplayable. I've enjoyed playing this very much and encountered zero issues. Aside from the music being swapped that we know about. I've played these games over and over for many years. I haven't noticed anything they say needs to be fixed. Seems like people have really picked it apart and been super pedantic because "oh my god it's a slight colour difference" or "the sprite is slightly different". It's negligible differences at best. 95% of people will not notice this stuff. If the coding geeks want to call it crap, let them. But play it yourself before passing judgement and spreading such an exaggerated claim that puts off other people.
You know you have a bad game on your hands when a modder says he can't fix it
Well it looks like there's no saving this garbage. If the modders can't save it then it looks like Sega themselves won't bother with it but seriously this collection should had been a slam dunk from the beginning. Why Sega choose to mess it up is a sign that they just care about the money and not the IP or the fans.
@RubyCarbuncle
No, I never experienced any glitches, I have no major complaints. I'm sorry your play throughs had problems.
Seems like Sega isn't concerned with fixing it either. I hate that I contributed to a sales statistic. Missed my chance to refund it unfortunately.
@Bunkerneath Worse than GTA Trilogy is a ludicrous exaggeration tbh.
@Slowdive This makes it clear that this guy is a massive wetwipe. Not that Origins doesn't have issues, but he's very dramatic and emotional, blowing things out of proportion.
@Orpheus79V The games have adjusted physics that makes intentional tricks no longer possible.
For example, if you immediately roll at the start of marble garden zone, you'll be naturally carried to a secret area with a hidden monitor.
In Origins, you build too much momentum and hit the ceiling, which makes the area incredibly tricky to enter as Sonic.
I'll admit that many of the fan patch notes list above are minor individually, but stating that the compellation has "No Issues" is taking it to the exact opposite extreme.
@bluemage1989 So Sonic 2 being utterly broken because Tails gets stuck offscreen and jumps repeatedly is acceptable? Half assed implementation of drop dash without the jump lock removed. Awful phoned in replacements of MJ music in Sonic 3. Save functionality downgrade from mobiles.
These should be definitive versions not inferior to what fans have done.
Sonic 1 Forever
Sonic 2 Absolute
Sonic 3 AIR
These are superior. Why is Sega incapable of outdoing fans. Fangames are notorious for being worse than official efforts. Why is this not the case with Sonic.
In my 40 hours of play on Nintendo Switch the only bug/glitch I’ve come across is Tails not de-spawning & constantly jumping, however it only happened once and stopped after about 20 seconds.
Sonic Origins isn’t anywhere near being an unplayable broken mess of a game (except on some pc’s), it really does just have a few small errors that aren’t even experienced by every player. Sonic Origins is definitely the best way to play these games on a console
@pspooky You're very lucky. I was playing the PC version which is the worst but that being said Tails getting stuck is common across all Platforms.
Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3 along with Sonic 4 on the Wii are the most fun I've had since the original Sega games on the Genesis. If you Google Sonic Retro you can also find a ton of better fanmade Sonic games than anything Sega is doing these days
I hope a physical, improved release comes out at some point.
@retroman64 dude the Wii virtual console versions of the games weren't ports they are emulation ofcourse they run well these new ports were made so that the game could run natively in widescreen and at 60fps
Nonsense the game is awesome
Gorgeous game which is getting more unnecessary hate towards sega.
This is probably the worst remaster since silent hill hd collection. Lol
Two things can be true at the same time.
Yes Sonic games suck and they're poorly made.
No this is not the worst remake/remaster/reshit we have seen since GTA remasters... not even by a long shot.
It's always good to see Sonic fans suffer for their own crimes, but it's a shame that Sega has to suffer with them. I'm not sure why Sega even bothers with Sonic at this point, far too much effort for a fanbase that clearly doesn't deserve any of it. They should have shut the whole series down in 2006 (before the 2006 game) and never touched the name again.
@YoshiAngemon Oh, you mean the same Blue Bomber that the entire Mega Man fanbase unceremoniously dropped back around 2010, then blamed Capcom for everything that was "suddenly" happening? How pathetic. Mega Man deserved better, and its fanbase never deserved these collections let alone excellent new games like Mega Man 11.
@Orpheus79V Welcome to the Sonic fanbase. Though welcome to any fanbase really. Fanbases don't really enjoy the thing they're supposed to be fans of.
Wow, reading the update it seems like someone's words were taken entirely out of context, which isn't unusual for tabloid journalism. I'm glad it's cleared up, but I understand the modder's frustration. The game isn't perfect and could've been much better. The only way I'm ever going to get it, is when it's on sale. I don't want to support SEGA too much with sloppy remakes.
Trust the tabloids to sink their teeth into a strongly worded rant about a fiction work so hungrily that the cited individual feels awkward enough to retract it and explain himself publicly. Which includes NL here, although credit where due for publishing said retraction as well.
Another reason to back Nintendo's policy of not letting the fans work on their stuff!
Someone got a little slap on the wrist there! 😂
But I fully believe this guy thinks the game is fine. But it can apparently never get great! 😱
I'd like to point out that Stealth's real name is Simon Thomley and not Simon Thornley as said in the article.
I’m guessing after this blew up, everyone went after him. He still feels the same but wants everyone to leave him alone. Social media and the fact that it is treated as a news source means you have to be measured in what you say because you don’t know who is watching.
Either way Sonic Origins was still not fix, Sega didn't come out and says they'll fix anything on it and the modder who wanted to fix it had no interest in fixing it anymore so yeah Sonic Origins remains bad.
Sega Japan just don't care. The reason Sonic Ultimate is so bad is because of an engrained corporate hatred that has been with Sega since the Sega Gensis days.
I think the game is good but there are lots of inconsistencies that leave me disappointed. Maybe these will get fixed in later patches, but right now Sonic Origins is just a good collection and a weak, pathetic cash-grab at the same time. And the worst part is that I fell for it.
@Mikey_205
the tails thing is because origins S2 is loaded the whole level, the original it only loaded a bit around the visible screen, also affects the cycles of platforms and the like
All a bit of a moot point really, because Sonic has never been good, ever. I can’t believe that it’s still something people talk about, let alone they are still plugging away at making new games.
Well official patches have now been announced.
@Buizel Unless you're really a fan of the Drop Dash, Hidden Palace Zone in "Sonic 2," being able to retry Special Stages, and a few added cut scenes; the first two games are significantly better on the 3DS, at least as long as you don't mind sticking to a single player in "Sonic 2."
