@samuelvictor You are right, the Dreamcast game is in no way a port of Daytona 2, though some tracks from that game appear in the original Xbox version of Outrun 2, as an extra compilation stage.
PS3 Daytona is pretty good, though the pit crew announcer is so quiet you can barely hear them, beats the Saturn and Dreamcast for that arcade game play I'd say.
Just as 'NX' speculation with zero official information became far beyond tiresome, here are another two letters.
I'll be looking back when Nintendo actually announce details of either of these devices / platforms.
@Kirk Yeah, was only the demo I played but certainly it didn't grab my attention, not like the first time I played Sonic, Starwing or something like Mario 64. In a sense the game is trading on nostalgia, so i figure is bound to be caught between its derivative aspects and attempts to cater to younger gamers unfamiliar with the older games. For me, the visuals were less than Id hope for to be honest. Be good if they put the demo out on the eshop really, as the controls are certainly different.
@Kirk Yep, was the buy your console, make your choice, stare a bit longingly at games on the other system era! I still like Star Wing, even down to its Afterburner style sounding (or, loose tribute perhaps) intro music, ha!
16-bits were good days!
@Kirk I quit the demo of this game when I played it, such was my first reaction to the controls... and yes the SNES game at the time greatly impressed me, even though I was a then SEGA fan / console owner.
While I see what they were going for (fly here, shoot there), I feel the Wiimote and nunchuck did it better anyway using the pointer and an analogue stick, in something like Sin and Punishment. Plus dropping the second screen may have benefited a stable fps.
My reaction to Zero was that it felt awkward to play, would really benefit from a demo I think.
When I tried the demo, I found the set up with two screens and the controls quite awkward.
I don't find the general presentation of the game interesting enough to buy it personally, I did enjoy the SNES and N64 games at the time though.
@Kirk Yep, these controls seem counterintuitive....
Also, cool features perhaps on the disc, but locked behind a plastic figure, its not really looking to be the update to the series I've waited for either.
@Einherjar Excuse off topic moment re thoses PSP versions, I own them digitally which is great as can activate on two consoles, even works with Playstation TV and Vita.
@Einherjar I prefer the PSP just for its retro compilations anyway to be honest, the Capcom Collections are great, one even has the SNES version of Ghouls and Ghosts on a commercial release.
@Einherjar really, its slower than a PSP? I did not know that. Shame they did not manage to get them working, as I may have actually bought a SNES game or two. Not buying a new console for the feature though.
I find it hard to believe, comparing to homebrew emulators is not an accurate comparison. Sony managed to get the PS3 to emulate the PS2 for digital releases, not something 'homebrew' would have managed.
The PSP managed to have commercial emulations of Megadrive, Neo Geo, and Capcom Arcade games released as compilations. I think they are looking for another reason to sell the 'new' 3DS hardware.
Personally, Ive no interest in these figures. Im not opposed to dlc, though on disc dlc is somewhat more questionable.
I appreciate that publishers can get a bit of money back on second hand sales with paid dlc, its optional and you dont have to buy it, I see its place...
However, to potentially lock dlc behind a figure that may become quite rare, and will only really benfit inflated second hand prices rather than recouping profit for the publisher, to me that seems quite daft, and potentially frustrating for people who dont have the figure.
Id rather just have the dlc available to buy.
Just realised Tantalus are making this, they did the Zombiu port to PS4/PC/Xbox...
I think they may be delaying some games to create cross platform releases with NX, to have a ready made launch line up to sell their new hardware. The did this with Twilight Princess, and with the lack of info on the new Zelda, seems like a similar situation. I played the Starfox demo for Wii U and it did seem pretty basic though, so Im not suprised it needs more work, if the demo can be considered representative of the final game.
@Ootfan98 Yep C64 Power Drift was a single load too, which was great as multi tape loads were a pain, lose a game on a later stage, then rewind and have to load the first stages again! Ports certainly varied back then on the 8-bits, Amstrad CPC had some great ones like Chase HQ.
@Ootfan98 C64 was the way to go for Power Drift at the time I think, its a suprisingly good version.
I have the Japanese Saturn release, fun game but I'd kind of like to see Turbo OutRun, just as there was never a true arcade port on a home system, and FM Towns closest I guess.
Maybe they want to do a micro console... I quite like Playstation tv for what I paid, £40, since I already have a number fof PS1 and PSP games on my psn account. A cheap console with a retro download element might interest me. If a console is to have expensive, so called 'triple A' games though, I'd want a disc drive.
@vincentgoodwin I think the Xbox version Crazy Taxi 3 has the city from '2' and the 'Crazy Hop', but I've never played it...
I also have the PS3 Dreamcast port of the first game and the PSP version (which does have custom soundtracks!).
With the PSP game, I think you can transfer it from a PS3 (if you have one) to a Vita, even if you cant download it straight onto the system.
I still have it, was great to play Sonic on the go but has some weird technical issues...
The resolution was kind of squashed so it looked more like the PAL version but with 60Hz speed, the music just changed pitch instead of speeding up when you got the speed shoes, and the credits for Sonic 2 were actually cut off the screen if you finished the game! Showed how they'd just cropped the image. As Sonic emulation goes... way better than SEGA Smash Pack on the Dreamcast, but not as good as Mega Collection on the Gamecube.
Still, I played the games a fair amount at the time, as the first Sonic remains one of my favorite ever computer games.
I completed both Crazy Taxi games 100% on Dreamcast, the challenges got pretty difficult later and those Dreamcast analogue triggers started to cause pain! Never played the 3rd on the Xbox, was a great arcade game though.
I was there, I played Starfox and thought it was pretty average... I only played the Corneria stage though. Compared to the memories of the SNES and N64 games, it just didnt make an impression upon me. I liked Mario Maker though, I still dont find the Wii U a compelling enough system to buy myself (and I am into neither sports nor fps games).
There was a good retro game stall, and 'The Heart of Gaming' also had a cool section set up.
Would have been a comparatively bad version of the game anyway. Im a fan of racing games though, so if I get a PS4 Ill try the game there, PC would be best but Im still a console gamer.
Oh, my car! Censorship aside (I had the Japanese version), I'd say this was a good version, beats out the SNES not just with more characters and a two player option in the original - but in the number of enemies on screen at once. This game mimics the sometimes frantic nature of the arcade much better, especially when placed against the PAL 50Hz SNES version. The sound is weak, but nothing is going to beat Final fight CD anyway for me there.
The PS3 / Xbox360 version is probably closest to the arcade in graphics and gameplay, even get some CRT style filters.
@Bass_X0 I like the Megadrive version, subjective I know!
I never got the glitch on the GBA either, I thought was a good version at the time, but GBA could have managed better renditions of the tunes Im sure.
Weirdly, Akuma is the only character who retains the arcade animation for walking backwards in this version.
Final Fight One does better than the SNES, all the characters plus Zero outfits for Guy and Cody, industrial stage reinstated, more enemies on screen. Japanese version wins though as the western versions retain the daft removal of Poison and Roxy.
SSF2 turbo Revival is far from my favourite SF2 game, its an odd version, and the characters are lacking their extra animations when walking backwards, just like the 16 bit versions. The music is also pretty lacking I think.
@Kirk Yep, Im starting to think it really was the 'good old days'. Well, I at least I now have a modded 60Hz Megadrive with a SCART lead, and these old games look great on a CRT TV.
I quite liked RE 0 on Gamecube, I think I'll be about ready to play the game again when the new version arrives, plus the first one was cross buy for the PS3 / PS4 version, so its one game I could carry across if I buy a PS4.
@Aromaiden I suppose they are in a bit of a bind, the Wii U could I'm sure play host to an amazing Metroid game, but it could be expensive to make and not sell well. Then again, making a game like that may shift a few more consoles. Makes me nostalgic for the Gamecube days.
Looking at the use of a franchise like Metroid attached to this (the problem being, its multi player action appears at odds to the central themes of lonely isolation that have come to define the atmosphere of those games), I hope it is not a sign of the 'transformation' Nintendo is describing.
Nintendo can do whatever they want with Metroid of couse, and it may sell very well, but I hope they will also still make games which truely reflect heritage of the series.
I want 'Silent Hill: Pub Skittles', Konami make it happen.
Trading on an existing franchise is one thing, but if you alienate the fans of that particular franchise whats the point? Its not just an art style, its a matter of gameplay, that sense of been lost in a weird, decaying and lonely word is kind of at odds to what were seeing here. It may be great fun, but why call it 'Metroid Prime'.
I'd guess a good comparison would be 'Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City'.
@aaronsullivan They are still popular here, especially with maybe slightly younger people than I. Think they took off a bit more here with the SNES certainly, Street Fighter 2, Super Mario World F Zero, great library for that system. The Wii was the system eveyone bought, but interestingly I think for different reasons, many for its accessable or 'casual' games, me for the VC! In the 8-bit days though we had lots of UK software houses making distinct games for C64, Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and earlier than that even more varied formats, and we had the Acorn BBC Micro in schools. It was easier to convice parents to buy games on cassette for £1.99 from WH Smiths, than what seemed crazy expensive console games. I just dont think the Nintendo brand has that broad nostaliga in like the US, but Ive certainly played many great games on Nintendo systems.
@aaronsullivan I think Nintendo have far more nostalgia for their brand in the US, the NES is percieved to have 'saved video games' whereas in the UK that was not the reality. I grew up playing Atari, ZX Spectrum, C64, Amiga, Sega and Nintendo consoles. The 8-bit computers were big and led to many playground debates about the best platform. As such, I dont care much about the platform, just games. I got a Wii for the VC, which was a great idea. I remember code masters releasing a CD games pack for the Spectrum and that was in 1989! Mario 64 did impress me at the time though, it was so well realised, you dont often see a game like that.
Saturn had an analogue pad before the N64, Nintendo just made it a standard to the packaged controller. It also had analogue triggers. If we are taking inovators how about someone like the late Ralph Baer.
Also, the text says 'unofficial translation' and 'grain of salt', so I really want to see some details on the new system before I evaluate it!
I'll judge it when I see it, but thing is the PS4 is already pretty much what I'd want from console, I'm just waiting for more games that interest me to convince me to buy one.
By the time this probably releases those other consoles will have large and cheap game libraries, just like PS3 and 360 did when Wii U launched.
Nintendo will need to start building its platform from zero, while other consoles with perhaps similar specs will be well established.
If there is a gimmick, they will be really hoping it catches on like the Wii mote.
I find it unlikey looking at the current situation, that whatever the new console is, it will be very forward looking.
They still dont even have proper user accounts for digital purchases, allowing account access on multiple devices, and any platform needs third party games to enrich its library.
The other consoles sell better as they have greater variety in their games, Ive no interest in CoD or fps games, but if you add up all the third party games that add choice to the respective audiences of those consoles, but miss Wii U, its a lot.
The other consoles have the third party games covering a diverse range of styles and genres, plus their exclusives. For example, I like racing games, and looking at Wii U, Id be pretty limited for choice.
Hmm, I dont think people play Bloodborne or the Souls games because they think they are 'mature', more likely because they are great games.
The Wii U is not a console I'd buy, not enough games Im interested in, and I find more variety on PS3 / Vita at the moment, I also like the cross play / buy features of those consoles over Nintendo's digital purchase attached to a single console approach.
I wish they would put the proper console games on the Vita, rather than 3DS ports... maybe thats a memory issue but if the Wii could handle the console Batman 2, the Vita could have. I guess if this dlc doesnt appear, its another example of investment / vs profit, if the Wii U sold better and they projected better sales of their dlc, it would be there.
I guess they let in run on quite a while which is bad, but I dunno, I wonder how many of the outraged folk would have actually bought the game on Wii U. Many were talking up Need for Speed Most Wanted, but it sold pretty bad on Wii U, and Nintendo have never really been a go to for fans of realistic racing simulation. Seems like another investment / projected profit issue to me. Game looks good, will try it if I get a PS4 at some point.
@TheRealThanos yep, I also think many Atari games were simple because they had roots in the arcade, designed to be short and addictive, and to make you keep wanting to insert another coin!
Not all games built on simple technology were intended to be played that way though, the BBC Mirco had Elite!
In a sense I see a similarity with how many mobile games are designed to mimic early arcade games, insert coin for the 21st Century.
I actually like the 'retro style' presentation in some games, if creative, vvvvv is a good example of where the style really fit the game for me. Often though, as you say, its just a cheap filter added to a simple idea.
The simplicity of phone games reminds me more of the Atari 2600 era, but simple can be compelling.
I think a lot of people play these type of games on their phones while they are waiting to do something else, I dont play phone games myself as I prefer real over touch contols, but they certainly have a mass appeal.
Im sure more complex games will still be created for people who appreciate something more out of their videogames, it may just not be those once famous developers creating them anymore, as they become focused on the mobile market, and target percieved increased profits therin.
Hopefully some will manage to strike a balance and do both!
@StevieB777 I think Revelations 2 is getting ported by a different studio, with assistance from SCEA. Looks like will be digital only though I think: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/04/10/resident-evil-revelations-2-ps-vita-status-check/
Whoops - just realised that was already answered!
As for Zero, this was to be expected as the next 'remaster' choice, I dont know why no Wii U and can only guess it’s a investment / profit decision, but I might get it on PS3 as the previous was cross-buy with PS4.
@JLPick Yep, I have those consoles, I suppose there were a lot overall, but with the Wii and 3DS there seemed less so, I kept waiting for a new 3DS racer since Ridge Racer and Need for Speed the Run. On Wii U, few indeed and I dont know why Need for Speed Most Wanted didnt sell, its pretty good. Bad news for all those who backed this game for the system, no doubt, and it would certainly address a gap in the Wii U library.
I wonder how many people backed the game for the Wii U. Nintendo consoles have never really been a place to find many racing games (beyond Mario Kart and F Zero). The lack of information on the Wii U version seemed to speak volumes. I'd probably try the game if I had a PS4, the way eveything is open from the off sounds pretty different, and I enjoy both Gran Turismo and arcade sytle racers.
Nintendo are the worst here, a download attached to a specific console, I will not buy anything else from them digitally until they implement a better system.
I spend a lot on PSN as it has great sales, and at least I know as long as the service is there, I can download my games on a few activated consoles, even those subsequently delisted.
I collect retro games as physical releases, mainly the Saturn and other SEGA consoles.

As a portable device though - don't some public wi-fi 'hotspots' require you to enter a password into a web browser to get online, even if your intention is then gaming rather than browsing. I know I had to do that sometimes with the Vita even after just connecting to wi-fi at a system level.

Re: Yup, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3 Is Definitely Skipping Wii U
The other consoles sell better as they have greater variety in their games, Ive no interest in CoD or fps games, but if you add up all the third party games that add choice to the respective audiences of those consoles, but miss Wii U, its a lot.
The other consoles have the third party games covering a diverse range of styles and genres, plus their exclusives. For example, I like racing games, and looking at Wii U, Id be pretty limited for choice.
Re: Editorial: Nintendo's Approach is Often Peculiar, Yet That's An Enduring Strength
Re: Lego Jurassic World Pre-Order Freebies Coming To PlayStation and Xbox, But Not Wii U
Re: Exclusive: Slightly Mad Studio Head Ian Bell Sets The Record Straight On Project CARS Wii U
Re: Talking Point: Retro Gamers Beware, PAC-MAN 256 Could be a Template for Nintendo's Smart Device Future
Re: Talking Point: Retro Gamers Beware, PAC-MAN 256 Could be a Template for Nintendo's Smart Device Future
Re: Capcom Is Bringing The Nintendo Exclusive Resident Evil Zero To Every Modern Gaming System But The Wii U
@StevieB777 I think Revelations 2 is getting ported by a different studio, with assistance from SCEA. Looks like will be digital only though I think:

Whoops - just realised that was already answered!
As for Zero, this was to be expected as the next 'remaster' choice, I dont know why no Wii U and can only guess it’s a investment / profit decision, but I might get it on PS3 as the previous was cross-buy with PS4.
Re: Project CARS Studio Boss Admits to Problems With Wii U Version, Hoping For Nintendo Hardware Announcement at E3
Re: Project CARS Studio Boss Admits to Problems With Wii U Version, Hoping For Nintendo Hardware Announcement at E3
Re: Talking Point: The Fragility of Buying Download Games
Nintendo are the worst here, a download attached to a specific console, I will not buy anything else from them digitally until they implement a better system.
I spend a lot on PSN as it has great sales, and at least I know as long as the service is there, I can download my games on a few activated consoles, even those subsequently delisted.
I collect retro games as physical releases, mainly the Saturn and other SEGA consoles.
