I think Yoshi may be a bit of a cash grab game, not saying it’s bad as I've not played it, but it looks very derivative of its prequels and a few have suggested the quality is lessened. I want to play Dark Souls 2, but I'm still (slowly!) working my way through the first one...
@Peek-a-boo Also agree Last of Us was a game deserving of its recognition, Left Behind also impressed me.
While awards may help publicise a title, I dont put much faith in them, taste is a subjective thing, I found Skyward Sword so dull it took me nearly a year to complete it, while I really enjoyed Twilight Princess...
As an aside, I think Nintendo characters may hold less retro nostagia in the UK then perhaps they do in the US, the Master System was pretty big here in addition to the C64, The Spectrum and various other 8-bit mircos.
I think The Last of Us was an outstanding game, while it may have areas that could be improved, I think it was one of the best integrations of Cinematic and videogame elements I've seen within a big mainstream title, and I started gaming with the Atari 2600... As for Nintendo not winning anything, I dont hold award ceremonies as a general measure of quality anyway.
I bought the game on PS3 and while I can appreciate the work that went in, and I enjoyed the nostalgic 80 references that recall my childhood pop-culture memories, I just found the actual game not that much fun to play.
I just could not get into Monster Hunter on the Wii, I'm currently playing Dark Souls on PS3 though, and its much more my kind of game. The world in Monster Hunter just felt much more like a backdrop, than something I was able to actually explore.
I'd like to play this game, shame it is so difficult for them to release in Europe... If you have a PS3 or 360, I guess there is always the HD version of Daytona USA available, but this looks cool.
The game is not that glitchy in my experience, I had one major glitch in the whole game on PS3, where a lift went up and batman fell through the floor (cant speak for multiplayer, I never really bother with it)... I really enjoyed the game, even though I didnt complete Arkham City.
I can see why they have done this, but I think it does negatively impact upon gamers perception of the Wii U in relation to third party software. It generates negative publicity for the console, therefore less sales, so more support is withdrawn.
One of the stand out games I played on the Wii, and far better than Homecoming with its clunky combat in my opinion.
Although quite different to the Team Silent creation of Silent Hill, I still think Shattered Memories is a great game on its own merits. It's more consistenly unnerving than 'jump out' scary, and the other world can get a little frustrating at times, but it's an original, well made and very playable entry in the series that should have done better by the sounds of it.
10/10 for me, an all time classic game and a really good version by M2. I got Sonic 2 just after release and even as a big SEGA fan, I thought it lost something over this game. Sonic 1 caps your running speed while holding right, you have to roll to go faster. As such, its platforming has a more consistant pace than the sequel, which had you running through the level until you hit somthing and come to a stop.
Who knows how many times I've played this game since 1991, and its still fun.
@unrandomsam I don’t like touch screen controls myself in retro games, music sounds fine to me (ha, try the Dreamcast Smash Pack version, or even the DS with its weird pitch shifting instead of sped up music!), but I've not used headphones.
Guess people can watch a vid and see what they think.
I have the Japanese and PAL versions of Sonic Jam, and if I recall, the reprogrammed version on there has some very minor slow down issues of its own, but it is still a great version. As an 'emulated' console version goes, this 3DS version is perhaps the best I've played, inclusive of Dreamcast, Gamecube, PSP, DS and PS3. It adds the spin dash and the 3D background layers, and includes the revision which added layers to all the stages backgounds, in addition to Green Hill. I find the curved 3D screen option a bit too curved to represent a CRT TV, but its a minor gripe. The definitive version for me is still playing my original cart on an actual Megadrive, modded for 60Hz with SCART output.
As many of those 3rd party games drifted away, I guess the problem would be that the Wii U is going to be a 2nd console option, which people will want if they want Nintendo games. It’s pretty pricey an investment for just a few exclusive games though, I think if they had managed to maintain more 3rd party interest they'd be better off. That’s one of the things that’s steered me from buying the console at least.
I'd also want to see a new HD Zelda, Metroid, F-Zero or Star Fox, broader VC, I still think the console has a lot of potential.
Sad thing is you could see it coming, I think. People can talk about frame rates and resoultions, but the Wii U started missing out on a lot of 3rd party games, or getting versions which looked to me almost the same as the PS3 / 360 version, sometimes late and / or with removed features.
Add this to the lack of a fully implemented accounts system, the drip feed of the VC, no sign of Metroid or F-Zero, at the moment I feel I have have no reason to buy the console over my PS3.
@Windy That would be great, but its the one that seems to get left out these days, weirdly. I figure the car sprite is a perhaps problem, but Shenmue 2 and the Yu Suzuki game works Dreamcast version just replaced it (as it has the 'Prancing Horse' lookalike).
I'd actually like to see Turbo OutRun at some point, its never had an arcade perfect port to my knowledge (FM Towns version is closest I suppose).
While I'd love to see OutRun, which is perhaps my favourite ever game, I dont think we will, at least with the original car sprite. The best non arcade version of OutRun is the Japanese Saturn release (the US and PAL SEGA ages compilation versions have a glitch where the car becomes stuck in its 'uphill' animation on the second stage).
If we see OutRun on 3DS, I think it will be with the generic sports car that is in the Shenmue 2 release... That would still be very cool though, as its not reappeared since OutRun 2 on Xbox, which had a decent emulated version of the arcade.
If anyone can do it it's M2, their SEGA Vintage Collection emulations on PS3 are great and an example of how to best present retro games on modern consoles, jukebox, multiple region setting, 50/60 Hz options, full screen customization, full button remapping including auto-fire, multiple save states, and scan lines options.
When I pre-ordered Castle of Illusion on PS3 and received the Megadrive version as a bonus, I was very glad to see their logo appear on start up!
I think the distinction is a bit overstated here, I only tend to have one console I'm buying games for at a time and at the moment thats a PS3, I've no interest in CoD or military fps games, but I still find a better range of games that interest me to play, than I would on the Wii U at the moment. I've played most of the recent Mario games and completed them, I think they're generally great games, but its not enough for me to invest in a Wii U at the moment. Its great that Nintendo has these exclusives, but the console misses out on many interesting and varied multi platform releases, which is a shame. I still like the idea of games consoles myself, I started with the Atari 2600!
Its worth noting that often compaines wont improve their services unless people complain, or stop investing their products or services. I remember when the Wii U VC launched and Balloon fight was presented in a slow 50Hz format, it was only after many PAL gamers expressed their opinions on Miiverse and online, that Nintendo started providing 60Hz versions of the games where they could just substitute the US version (this is not a Nintendo exclusive problem by the way, most PS1 games on PSN are 50Hz although it is possible to make a US account).
I'm not a fan of any particular games company (except maybe SEGA, which is slightly rose tinted nostalgia I admit!). I like video games, but when I see Nintendo selling digital games attached to a console, it puts me off using their e-shop. If my console breaks, there is no simple way to transfer the investment I have made in those games to a new system.
It was bad enough with the Wii, but there is no way I would buy full price digital games on a system which ties them to a console. Once they have a proper accounts system (and some more games which interest me), I might buy a Wii U!
3D World looks like a fun game, if there was a good enough deal, I'd consider a Wii U, if they just create a proper accounts system, more VC, a new Zelda, a new Metroid and F-Zero. I have a PS3 which has some great games, but I'm not rushing out to buy PS4 anytime soon, my approach to the next gen is 'wait and see' before buy.
I remember before dedicated or chain video rental shops existed here in the UK. Used to rent films from a local shop that just had them on shelves above a freezer... I also remember those 'wow, what a difference' very American style ads and renting 80s movies from the Blockbuster that opened locally. Funny how things changed so fast.
I bought Arkham Origins on PS3 at the weekend (yes, £35 retail), I'm really enjoying the game even though I gave up on Arkham City. I think I like the representation of the city at Christmas... As I don't have a Wii U, just not interested enough by the games to invest in the console, I'm just waiting for the SEGA classics on 3DS at the moment.
@Memeboy3 The current situation was foreseeable, create a forum and some anoymity and its only a matter of time before someone will be puposely offensive I'm afraid. Perhaps it would have been better for them to prioritise an accounts system over this service. Then they would not be in the position of having to withdraw it and upset those that enjoy using it. I didn't use the letter box feature myself anymore, but I thought it had a quaint charm, almost like posting a letter these days...
This was the 'Nintendo letter box' thing right? I thought it was a pretty neat feature, but what I take from the story and the comments is that with an absence of an account system, Nintendo left themselves open to this type of situation, with no effective method of identifying and banning offending users.
Therefore, they have to abandon the entire service to protect themselves, evidently offending many of their own customers in the process. I really think they need an accounts system.
1991, good time to be in your early teens and for console gaming, I got the console with Sonic included for my birthday, I still play my original cart (though I have a modded 60hz Megadrive to play it on these days!).
Sonic might pick up if people play the demo, the reviews are bad but it’s a really rather good game (I have 3DS version), with some of the most responsive controls in the series I've played (at least in the 3D style games).
As a Sonic fan since '91 this is one of the better late games I've played in the series, levels are varied, the controls actually work really well for the most part (with the exception of the gyro) and I also like the slower pace of some levels. The 'button to run' mechanic lessens the problem with speeding off ledges and provides improved control, there are new game play mechanics like the wall run which work well, and if you get stuck with a particularly challenging sequence, the game even helps you out with handy little RC vehicles.
With the snowboarding stage, if you hold up on the analogue slider and curve to steer, you get a much better sense of control than just pushing left or right.
I really don’t understand the low ratings on this, if you're a Sonic fan, I would recommend trying this game.
I don’t have a Wii U, but to be honest, I wouldn’t download actual retail games to a console without a properly implemented accounts system (I buy carts for my 3DS, unless a download exclusive I really want to play). I played the original version of Human Revolution again on PS3 recently, and it’s a very nice looking game, this size includes the original dlc too I believe...
Tabloids, the sad thing is many people believe what they read in them, but they never need qualify or cite what they print. Power without the responsibility.
I always thought it’s the speed that caused the problem for Sonic in 3D.
Precision platforming in 3D becomes problem at high speed, so the games started to feel very scripted, with a stilted start / stop / 'fly off in a random direction in to a bottomless pit because you dashed the wrong way' quality.
The shifting of 'running fast' to a button press is a significant change to control, and hopefully will make the pace of the game and the platforming more stable and less scripted.
Shame I can’t get this for PS3 (I don’t have a Wii U), but I will be picking up the 3DS version (like I do pretty much every Sonic game I can when it launches, since 1991...). I found 'Generations' didn’t really fix the problems of Sonic in 3D, at least on the home consoles, I think I actually preferred the 3DS version despite its simplified graphics.
I also thought Sonic 4: Episode Two was one of the better recent Sonic games, hope we see Episode Three...
I don’t have a Wii U, just a 3DS, but its getting to the point I can hardly remember the last time I downloaded something off the e-shop (still waiting for the SEGA 3D classics!). I realise I've pretty much switched to PSN for downloads. They seem to have themed sales on PSN every week or so, with decent discounts.
Those Wii U VC options are quite poor, they're ok games, but there must be more appealing choices Nintendo could make to attract people to the service, and in turn, their console (Megadrive and SNES would be a start!).
I'd question why use the little gamepad screen on a stand, when you could use a TV to display the picture in Wii mode. If you could use the gamepad controls, it would be a better feature.
Felt to me like it lost its way with GTA 4 in terms of how I enjoyed the series as a video game, it just didnt seem fun anymore, despite how I used to enjoy exploring the map and listening to music in Vice City and San Andreas. I'm not hyped to buy the new game, but the world looks impressive and I might try it just for that (the missions were never the appeal, unlock the map and just waste time!). Hope they have custom soundtracks this time though. Also, those dancing mini games in TBOGT, just yuk.
SNES on 3DS would be very cool indeed. Its weird as we got a Wii-Ware 'Contra' in Europe, Contra 4 never got released on DS (I had to Import it). Then there is weird stuff like the GBC Konami collection having a version of 'Operation C' with the Contra sprites, but with the title screen 'Probotector'... Anyway, 'let's attack aggressively'.
@Cohort Yep, Megadrive Special Champion Edition is my 16-bit version of choice, I actually prefer the music as was a bit more like the arcade I think. Add the six button joypad and its still the version I'd play from the era (before arcade perfect versions). I never liked 'Super' as much as Champion Edition and Turbo. I also remember the weird arcade mods that appeared at the time...
Twilight Princess (Gamecube version) is my favourite Zelda game, I had high expectations of Skyward Sword and got it at release with the gold remote, but I just didnt enjoy the game anywhere near as much. For me Wind Waker was somewhere between the two, not a game I would buy a console to play in HD.
Still no SEGA 3D classics, ages since I bought anything on the e-shop. I pretty much just get get things on PSN these days, they have really good sales on there (got King of Fighters XIII for £5.99 at the weekend), and an account system makes it a better option for me.
Zero Punctuation is great, I find it well written & funny. I've also found Yahtzee's reviews spot on regarding a number of games. I like the idea of a games only console (having started with the Atari 2600 myself), but the Wii U does not have an adequate number of games that interest me enough to invest in the console... yet.
I had this on the Wii VC. Of the 16-bits I'd take the Megadrive's Special Champion Edition over the others (with the 6 button pad back in the day). While it lacked colour and the sound was comparatively rough, the gameplay was there, and it was faster than any version on the SNES. The Saturn version's were pretty great at the time.
I recently picked up the Capcom Classics collection for PSP for cheap, so revisiting the arcade versions of World Warrior, Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting on there. I never really got into 'the new challengers'.
Its a shame to lose the screen protection afforded by the current design, but I suppose a low price was the main incentive to this version. I do think it looks a bit odd though.
Contra is Contra, and trying to appeal to bland mass market tastes in the hope to make as much money as possible, is not the best path for an established series. More often than not, you end up with a bad generic game that doesnt live up to it's heritage, and manage to alienate the people who enjoyed the originals at the same time.
The original is still my favourite, it may look simpler, but I like the design for the sprites and the music more that the sequels, or I'm more nostalgic about it... I'm pretty good at Streets of Rage, so don’t think I'll need this mode, second game I had for the Megadrive and I played it a lot (and still do!). Any little additional options are always cool though.
@unrandomsam I dont think they have a clear policy on the matter, we have yet to see a 50Hz 3DS VC title, the 3DS VC trailer looks the right speed despite the title screen 'Street Gangs'. Perhaps a PAL gamer who has downloaded it can confirm for certain.
@unrandomsam Pretty sure they could force an early NES game like this into 60Hz, as I doubt any concessions were made in the original PAL version to correct the speed or aspect ratio. Looking at the trailer for the 3DS VC release 'Street Gangs' (I've not downloaded the actual game), it seems to be running at the correct 60Hz speed as the 'River City Ransom' trailer above (the game is boardered anyway).
I remember playing this when it was new, still a fun game! However, as I still have my GBA and Super Mario Advance, the VC version and the All Stars version, not buying it this time. I'm waiting for the Megadrive 3D classics for my next retro purchase on 3DS.

Re: Big Red Button Explains Its Sonic Boom Character Designs, and Admits They Could Have Been Wackier
I find these designs lacking in charm, quite the opposite to Sonic's 1991 look. As a long term fan, I'm not interested in the game, which seems weird!

Re: Weirdness: UK Tabloid Reports on Fictional Deus Ex "Eyeball Implant"
Tabloids, the sad thing is many people believe what they read in them, but they never need qualify or cite what they print. Power without the responsibility.
Re: Sonic Lost World Producer Admits "There Was a Struggle in 3D Sonic Games"
Re: Nintendo Download: 10th October (Europe)
I don’t have a Wii U, just a 3DS, but its getting to the point I can hardly remember the last time I downloaded something off the e-shop (still waiting for the SEGA 3D classics!). I realise I've pretty much switched to PSN for downloads. They seem to have themed sales on PSN every week or so, with decent discounts.
Those Wii U VC options are quite poor, they're ok games, but there must be more appealing choices Nintendo could make to attract people to the service, and in turn, their console (Megadrive and SNES would be a start!).
Re: New Wii U System Update Goes Live Across Europe, North America and Japan
I'd question why use the little gamepad screen on a stand, when you could use a TV to display the picture in Wii mode. If you could use the gamepad controls, it would be a better feature.
Re: Soapbox: Why Grand Theft Auto V Isn't For Me
Felt to me like it lost its way with GTA 4 in terms of how I enjoyed the series as a video game, it just didnt seem fun anymore, despite how I used to enjoy exploring the map and listening to music in Vice City and San Andreas.
I'm not hyped to buy the new game, but the world looks impressive and I might try it just for that (the missions were never the appeal, unlock the map and just waste time!). Hope they have custom soundtracks this time though.
Also, those dancing mini games in TBOGT, just yuk.
Re: Contra III: The Alien Wars Listing Points to Virtual Console Releases
SNES on 3DS would be very cool indeed. Its weird as we got a Wii-Ware 'Contra' in Europe, Contra 4 never got released on DS (I had to Import it). Then there is weird stuff like the GBC Konami collection having a version of 'Operation C' with the Contra sprites, but with the title screen 'Probotector'...
Anyway, 'let's attack aggressively'.
Re: Video: Want To Know Which Version Of Street Fighter II Runs The Fastest?
@Cohort Yep, Megadrive Special Champion Edition is my 16-bit version of choice, I actually prefer the music as was a bit more like the arcade I think. Add the six button joypad and its still the version I'd play from the era (before arcade perfect versions). I never liked 'Super' as much as Champion Edition and Turbo. I also remember the weird arcade mods that appeared at the time...
Re: Nintendo Tested Two Other Zelda Titles in HD on the Wii U
Twilight Princess (Gamecube version) is my favourite Zelda game, I had high expectations of Skyward Sword and got it at release with the gold remote, but I just didnt enjoy the game anywhere near as much. For me Wind Waker was somewhere between the two, not a game I would buy a console to play in HD.
Re: Video: Want To Know Which Version Of Street Fighter II Runs The Fastest?
Special Champion Edition (Turbo) on the Medadrive is faster than all three... though I know it may not look or sound as nice.
Re: Wii U Version of Splinter Cell: Blacklist Gets Patched Up
@Dambuster Ha - too true! Perhaps if they had some music as good as the Ocean Loader to listen to, they wouldn’t mind so much
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th September (Europe)
Still no SEGA 3D classics, ages since I bought anything on the e-shop. I pretty much just get get things on PSN these days, they have really good sales on there (got King of Fighters XIII for £5.99 at the weekend), and an account system makes it a better option for me.
Re: The World's Most Scathing Video Game Critic May Be Warming To Wii U
Zero Punctuation is great, I find it well written & funny. I've also found Yahtzee's reviews spot on regarding a number of games. I like the idea of a games only console (having started with the Atari 2600 myself), but the Wii U does not have an adequate number of games that interest me enough to invest in the console... yet.
Re: Super Castlevania IV Is Whipping The Japanese Wii U Virtual Console Next Week
May be may favourite SNES game, they should put SNES on 3DS VC...
Re: Review: Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (Wii U eShop / Super Nintendo)
Re: Say Hello To The Nintendo 2DS - A 3DS without 3D
Its a shame to lose the screen protection afforded by the current design, but I suppose a low price was the main incentive to this version. I do think it looks a bit odd though.
Re: Dave Cox - A New Contra Has "To Have a New Idea"
Contra is Contra, and trying to appeal to bland mass market tastes in the hope to make as much money as possible, is not the best path for an established series.
More often than not, you end up with a bad generic game that doesnt live up to it's heritage, and manage to alienate the people who enjoyed the originals at the same time.
Re: 3D Streets Of Rage Will Come With One Hit Deathblow Mode
The original is still my favourite, it may look simpler, but I like the design for the sprites and the music more that the sequels, or I'm more nostalgic about it...
I'm pretty good at Streets of Rage, so don’t think I'll need this mode, second game I had for the Megadrive and I played it a lot (and still do!). Any little additional options are always cool though.
Re: Review: Street Gangs (3DS eShop / NES)
@unrandomsam I dont think they have a clear policy on the matter, we have yet to see a 50Hz 3DS VC title, the 3DS VC trailer looks the right speed despite the title screen 'Street Gangs'. Perhaps a PAL gamer who has downloaded it can confirm for certain.
Re: Review: Street Gangs (3DS eShop / NES)
@unrandomsam Pretty sure they could force an early NES game like this into 60Hz, as I doubt any concessions were made in the original PAL version to correct the speed or aspect ratio.
Looking at the trailer for the 3DS VC release 'Street Gangs' (I've not downloaded the actual game), it seems to be running at the correct 60Hz speed as the 'River City Ransom' trailer above (the game is boardered anyway).
Re: Super Mario Bros. 2 Available On The 3DS Virtual Console Right Now in Europe
I remember playing this when it was new, still a fun game! However, as I still have my GBA and Super Mario Advance, the VC version and the All Stars version, not buying it this time. I'm waiting for the Megadrive 3D classics for my next retro purchase on 3DS.
