Weirdly, I got my Gamecube out at the weekend to play some Double Dragon Advance on the TV, and was reminded how cool the system looks (even with the Gameboy Player attached).
I've never bought a FIFA game, nor would I have the interest to do so (yes, I'm old enough to remember the first versions) . The Wii U is just failing to compete against the current gen HD consoles, which are still recieving support with new releases, and have large, affordable libraries of varied games.
I bought a PS3 as it was cheap and there were a number of games that interested me. I have a Gamecube, Wii, DS and 3DS, but the Wii U just doesnt have a line up of games that interest me enought to buy the console. Having said that, I'm not rushing out to pre-order any of the other 'next gen' consoles either yet!
I don’t mean to be down on Wii U, but I think I read Need for Speed Most Wanted didn’t sell so well on the format. If PS3 could run the game, I'm sure the Wii U could, so it must be down to profitability. I remember how annoying it was to me that OutRun 2 skipped the Gamecube...
I played the game on Gamecube and I never finished it, so it wouldn’t sell me a Wii U, just because it has visual refinements. I preferred Twilight Princess (on Gamecube), which I did complete. I feel Nintendo are almost treading water, the Gamecube had games that made me want to buy the console, so did the 3DS, but for some reason the Wii U does not.
I suppose I'm waiting for a new Zelda, Metroid, or F-Zero.
I remember the reviews at the time put me off the Game Gear version certainly, and fast moving air combat (with tiny sprites) didnt seem a concept well suited to the hardware.
The Arcade game had an impressive rotating cabinet if I remember, though I never got to play it.
Sad thing is, I'm feeling underwhelmed with the entire 'next gen' of consoles. At this rate, I think I might end up sticking with PS3 and Wii and just going through the back catalogues.
I also don’t like the over familiar brown grey 'realistic' look afflicting a lot of modern day games, the new look for ‘Dead Rising’, is a good example, it seems to have lost what made it visually distinct, and to me that was a large part of the appeal in the game.
It’s like every other big budget game is so desperate to appeal to the mass market, to be a block buster, they are all starting to look quite similar, and in the cases of ‘rebooting’ once distinct franchises, alienating many the people that were fans of the series in the first place.
I’m not writing new the consoles off, but at the moment, I'm not running out to 'upgrade'!
Are they really pushing the graphics and scope that much on this sequel?
I have a PS3 but I'm not sold on the 'next gen' yet, I suppose I want to see some games that do more than increase the resolution and frame rate, or fill the screen with window dressing type visual effects.
I played through original Beyond Good and Evil and it was a very enjoyable game, but I've never been that excited for a sequel myself. I think with Wii U, I'm waiting to see games like Metroid, F-Zero, Star Fox and a proper Zelda game before I think of getting the console.
Come on SEGA, bring these games to Europe, we supported you since the Master System! I'd be buying most of these 3D SEGA games, just as I do their retro releases on PSN...
My first reaction to this game (way back when I first bought it for my Game Gear) was slight disappointment.
Whereas the original Sonic had a unique look on the Game Gear, with a new Sonic sprite, extra detail in the background and slight level alterations to accommodate the smaller screen, it seemed with Sonic 2 SEGA just 'zoomed in' the Master System version.
Which might not be so bad, the Master System game is great, but it was ‘zoomed in’ too close, making aspects such as the first boss encounter needlessly frustrating...
A fun game, but the first Sonic was just a better example of how to port a Master System game to the Game Gear.
Looking at my DS library. quite a few of my games are imports, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and its sequel, Contra 4, Jump Ultimate Stars, Atari Greatest Hits Vol.2... On GBA some of my top games were also imports such as Wario Ware Twisted and Double Dragon Advance (these were games not released in Europe). On Gamecube I imported the Japanese version of Sonic Gems so I could play the Streets of Rage games...
Region locking should go, but I honestly do not think Nintendo are going to change their policy on this.
This and the sequel we're influential in me buying a Gamecube, the sequel adding a two player version of the first game's missions and the original arcade games was also a nice surprise. Great atmosphere of the films and fun arcade style gameplay, real shame the series stopped there.
Favourite memories, playing the first game in 1991, and waiting until my birthday to get a Megadrive with the game included. The hype for Sonic 2 in the SEGA magazines, and then again having to wait again until my birthday to get the game.
The first game is my favourite Sonic game of the early days, I think Generations (both versions in their own way) for the more recent releases.
I stayed a SEGA console fan right up to the Dreamcast and have bought most Sonic games since, looking forward to Lost World on 3DS (don’t have a Wii U).
OutRun (my favourite game of all time) would have likely have the 'Ferrari' issue, but they could use the generic car from the Dreamcast Shenmue version. Japanese Saturn version will always be the best OutRun. As a long time SEGA fan, I'd almost certainly buy all of these.
I bought this and The Last of Us on Friday, first two games I've bought at launch in ages.
Have enjoyed Animal Crossing since the Gamecube, this version combining portability with features missing from the DS version, was one of the reasons I invested in a 3DS early on.
When 3D sonic messed with gravity in the past, the glitches went in to overdrive... However, this looks really promising and I'll be hopefully picking up the 3DS version. I found the 3DS Generations to be underrated, I have the PS3 version but enjoyed the 3DS too, more than I did the DS version of Colours.
They should have played up a link to X-treme though, for us hard-core Saturn fans!
@JulioSince1990 Yes, I don’t mind the 'power' issue of the Wii U at all, but I'm just not that interested in most of these games, as they seem over-familiar in scope and design, or just not my thing. I decided rather than buying a Wii U and complaining, I'd wait out and see how the system developed. If I'm buying a next gen system, it will be Wii U or PS4, but at the moment I'm happy with Wii, 3DS and PS3.
It was a good game, I played through on PS3, but I don’t think I'd pay much to play again just for the enhancements available in the director’s cut.
Maybe if they included the first Deus Ex as a bonus, I’m playing the PS2 version of the original for the first time at the moment and really enjoying it.
I'm still not sold on the Wii U, it's still a lot of money to invest in and I'm not sold on the games at the moment. The Xbox One isn’t even an option for me with its restrictions on what I can do with my personal property, so as next gen goes, I'll be waiting to see how the Wii U develops and PS4 pan out...
Hold a button to run, it certainly looks like a new approach and somewhat like the Sonic X-treme concept, the idea of a 'walk' speed for better precision platforming does sound like a good addition.. The '2D' 3DS level looks a bit weird to me, I wonder what the final balance between stage types will be. As its Sonic, I'll most likely buy the game (on 3DS, don’t have a Wii U) from nostalgia anyway!
Perhaps he means having alternative games featuring Nintendo's IPs on other hardware, playing to the strengths of that hardware. Just dont mention the CDI games...
Weird to think that Ian Livingstone is in the video games industry, like many children who were growing up in the 80s in the UK, I'll always associate him with the Fighting Fantasy book series, I almost prefered those books to video games at the time!
I can’t imagine SEGA would keep these games Japan exclusive, they know that there are a lot of nostalgic fans here in Europe and the US too I'm sure. I noticed they are developed by M2, who did the excellent 'SEGA vintage' versions of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Super Hang On and others available on PS3.
I'd get Sonic certainly, I hope SEGA add OutRun as that is one of my favourite video games ever, since I first played it back in the 80s. They dont need the Ferrari license, they could just use the generic car sprite they had in the Shenmue version.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Streets of Rage or Revenge of Shinobi would also be great.
My first reaction to the trailer was the cancelled Saturn title 'Sonic X-treme', and the internet confirms I wasn’t the only one... I'm slightly disappointed I can’t get the game on PS3 as I'm always interested in new Sonic games, but I have a 3DS at least. If enough games arrive to make me want to buy a Wii U, I'll get this one.
I first remember playing the game on Atari ST 'back then', of the Megadrive port, it’s funny to think how much a game that looked similar to an arcade seemed impressive when you were more used to 8-bit conversions on the Commodore.
Having said that, the gameplay didn’t impress me even at the time, and time has not improved it. I got the arcade version when it released on Wii VC, and it is visually nicer than the Megadrive at least. Your character also looks pretty funny as he ‘powers up’.
Really hope SEGA bring the 3D classics to Europe soon, I think their consoles were quite popular here after all!
The song takes me straight back to after school telly, just like the theme song to Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds does! Was on 'childrens BBC' I think.
I've not had the inclination to rush out and buy a Wii U, but some aspects appeal to me at least, not so with the new Xbox. I only just caught up with HD consoles with the PS3 though, which I've found has loads of great games available, so I'm not joining the 'next gen' for a while yet...
@rjejr I prefered Sonic Adventure to the sequels, completed the game 100% on Dreamcast, yes, even finishing the Big the Cat mode. Playing the game again on PSN recently, I felt a bit motion sick... @FullbringIchigo Yes, SEGA should add Sonic 4 to Wii U, I really enjoyed episode 2.
System 3 were great on the C64, I never had Putty Squad or an Amiga, but I do wonder what happened to the plans to release updated new versions of The Last Ninja...
I think that was also the name an action stage in 'Sonic Adventure', with epic music I recall. I hope they make Sonic 4 episode 3, I liked the previous 2.
It’s a weird one, I really enjoyed the game on 3DS and played through a few times, but I think the scale of the game suited the system very well.
I’ll get the demo on PSN and see how it plays as don’t have the Wii U, I think it would have been good if Capcom could have added some new areas or content to the main game, in addition to raid modes.
I also think the 3DS screen really does add something to games, I recently got the MGS collection on PS3 and despite its smooth visuals and dual analogue, Snake Eater seemed kind of flat after playing the 3DS version.
@SethNintendo I thought you did, most gamers are aware of the issues relating to accounts. I think such an account system would improve the service, hence an uptake in people using the service, and hopefully then more developers putting their games on the eshop.
@SethNintendo I should clarify, an account that doesn’t link what you have bought to a specific system, which would conveniently allow you to transfer your purchases in the case of the system breaking, or getting lost somehow in the case of a hand held. I'm aware of the club Nintendo accounts, I think there's room for improvement in this area.
Wow, will get this game pretty much as soon as its available as the first Sonic game is one of my all time favourites. I hope as a stand alone title, that it’s up to the quality of the recent SEGA vintage games (Alex Kidd and Revenge of Shinobi) on PSN regards emulation and options. These PSN titles allow multi region versions and 50/60Hz display options.
The Game Gear emulator on 3DS was also presented far better than the Game Boy, so here’s hoping!
The 'spin dash' was added to Sonic 1 in Sonic Jam on the Saturn by the way, which, unlike the awful GBA game, is an excellent version.
Good or bad, I always seem to end up buying Sonic's 'new' game, I even went and downloaded Sonic Adventure on PSN.
I grew up as a SEGA fan with the Master System and Megadrive, of recent Sonic games I found the 3DS version of Generations and Sonic 4 Episode 2 were the ones most enjoyed playing.
2GB is fine for me, I may still get a few VC games if any future releases really interest me, but I can’t image paying £40 to download a game without any type of account system in place...
@Moshugan I kind of wonder how far Nintendo will go with 60Hz though. For the moment with these old games (I think) they are just using the US version as a short cut.
However, once you get to games which may have been presented in a number of European languages, it may require more work to convert the PAL rom into a 60Hz format, we be interesting to see if they will actually do this.
The fact they finally sorted out 60Hz after all this time is good, but as I'm not likely to buy a Wii U in the near future, its a shame they can’t update the games on the old Wii VC to 60Hz too...
Shame its not 'Operation-C', the gameboy game rather than the NES, I played that for hours in the early 90s...
NES Super C is included as an extra in DS Contra 4 (why was that game never released in Europe? I had to import it in the end...) so I can already play that on 3DS.
They need an account system of some sort, it’s the best way to protect access to the games you've bought. I pretty much have stopped downloading games on 3DS for this reason.
I don’t have the Wii U but I like the lego games, I might try this, though an inconstant frame rate can be quite a distraction. Would prefer to ‘try before buy’ with this one...
I have most of these, how about Shadowrun since Europe never got it, I liked Skitchin' which often gets skipped for Road Rash, or Zero Tolerance in its 16-bit fps glory! Also, Hyperstone Heist if not Turtles in Time...
@Five-seveN If there is a game I really want, I'd probably still get it. I'd still prefer an account system though, makes it easier to sort out if the thing breaks or something and I'd feel more inclined use the e-shop service.
Also none, I decided I wouldn’t download any more 3DS games until some sort of account system is in place. I might make an exception if the original Game Gear version of Sonic is released though!
I think part of the problem for the Wii U selling is, that although the PS3 and X-box are years old, they are still relevant competition in their cheaper or slim line models. They are still receiving current big releases and have large and low cost back catalogues of excellent games.
Last Christmas the PS3 could be bought for in the UK for as low as £135 (plus the cost of a hard drive), I saw this even advertised on the sides of buses, while the Wii U would set you back almost £300. Add in the price of games and people with less money to spend, I think it was hard for the Wii U to make a sustained impact at that price, at that time. I'm sure Nintendo are in for the long haul with the console though, it's the games that will sell it.
A true Megadrive classic that still sits near the top of my stack of 16-bit games, and yes, Quackshot is also excellent, so be good to see that one too... I don’t have a Wii U, so I'm hoping for a PSN version.

However, once you get to games which may have been presented in a number of European languages, it may require more work to convert the PAL rom into a 60Hz format, we be interesting to see if they will actually do this.
Re: New Wii U Virtual Console Titles Confirmed By Nintendo UK
The fact they finally sorted out 60Hz after all this time is good, but as I'm not likely to buy a Wii U in the near future, its a shame they can’t update the games on the old Wii VC to 60Hz too...
Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd May 2013 (Europe)
Shame its not 'Operation-C', the gameboy game rather than the NES, I played that for hours in the early 90s...
NES Super C is included as an extra in DS Contra 4 (why was that game never released in Europe? I had to import it in the end...) so I can already play that on 3DS.
Re: Nintendo Of America Rep Insists That Lost Digital Content "Not Covered For Replacement"
They need an account system of some sort, it’s the best way to protect access to the games you've bought. I pretty much have stopped downloading games on 3DS for this reason.
Re: Review: LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins (3DS)
I don’t have the Wii U but I like the lego games, I might try this, though an inconstant frame rate can be quite a distraction. Would prefer to ‘try before buy’ with this one...
Re: Feature: Ten SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis Games We Want on the Wii U Virtual Console
I have most of these, how about Shadowrun since Europe never got it, I liked Skitchin' which often gets skipped for Road Rash, or Zero Tolerance in its 16-bit fps glory! Also, Hyperstone Heist if not Turtles in Time...
Re: Video: Nintendo Europe Highlights Key eShop Titles From The Past Two Months
@Five-seveN If there is a game I really want, I'd probably still get it. I'd still prefer an account system though, makes it easier to sort out if the thing breaks or something and I'd feel more inclined use the e-shop service.
Re: Video: Nintendo Europe Highlights Key eShop Titles From The Past Two Months
Also none, I decided I wouldn’t download any more 3DS games until some sort of account system is in place.
I might make an exception if the original Game Gear version of Sonic is released though!
Re: Talking Point: The Next-Gen Console War is Wii U's to Lose
Re: Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Looks Set For Wii U
A true Megadrive classic that still sits near the top of my stack of 16-bit games, and yes, Quackshot is also excellent, so be good to see that one too... I don’t have a Wii U, so I'm hoping for a PSN version.
