Re: Nintendo Is Already Taking The Necessary Steps To Combat Video Game Addiction

Regpuppy

It's weird to me how we can have people constantly on their phones, watching TV for 4+ hours a day, or partaking in any other hobby. But special attention is given to videogames. Granted, videogames are more interactive than watching TV/Netflix. But I don't see how that makes it any worse than an equal time used on other hobbies.

Like the violent videogame arguments, this just feels like people using videogames as a scapegoat for the real issues in a society. Like insanely stressful work culture, neglectful parenting, or news media pushing fear at every opportunity. If people are diving headfirst into escapism, there's probably something else going on here.

Re: Nintendo Will Continue To Sell The 3DS, As Long As There Is Consumer Demand For It

Regpuppy

I wouldn't be surprised if they sold off the last of their 3DS stock, and focused on the cheaper 2DS systems for another year or two. There will probably be a few more ports, along with some more 3DS Nintendo selects versions as well. But I don't expect much past that, since even software sales are dipping.

The question is, when things do die down for the 3DS/2DS. Will Nintendo release the fabled mini budget switch or something else? The lower price point of the 2DS is what kept the 3DS line kicking for this long. I imagine it will like a gap in the market when it's done.

Re: Talking Point: What Does The Nintendo Seal Of Quality Mean In 2019?

Regpuppy

@Hikingguy Not really. As a general retro game collector, I can assure you that seal was put on many a crappy NES, SNES, or N64 game.

The only thing that has changed is that there's more games out there. Which also means more shovelware and garbage. There are also more gems, but they're harder to find in the pile, and Nintendo's current Eshop layout doesn't help much.

Re: Wargroove Players Are Recreating Advance Wars And Fire Emblem Maps In-Game

Regpuppy

@RadioShadow On my main TV, I limit the number of consoles I hook up to them because cable management and clutter becomes a huge pain. (Also the occassional tech issues that Heavy mentioned)The Wii U had some good games, but a lot of them keep getting ported to the Switch, and there are not enough of these guys that I play with enough frequency to justify pushing off my GameCube, PS2, or other modern consoles to make room for it.

Not to mention, I can actually carry my Switch wherever I want. So I'd much prefer my SRPG, JRPG, RPG, and retro titles on my Switch. It's just more convenient. This is why you see so many of us asking for ports and remakes on the Switch.

Re: Video: View The Nitro-Fueled Gameplay In This Crash Team Racing Clip

Regpuppy

@Anti-Matter @DockEllisD Now those are a lot better. Thank you.

Edit: hmm.. The gameplay looks solid. But the maps seem a little small and simple, compared to MK8. It still looks alright, and I'll end up getting it. But I'm not sure I'd put it up there with MK8, unless it makes up with it with map variety, or some more complex maps.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Want From A Switch Mini?

Regpuppy

I have no interest in a Switch mini. I get why it might make financial sense, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

I'd prefer a Switch Pro, if anything, even if it only gave me little things. Like better load times, higher frames, or more consistent resolution, in regards to games with dynamic resolutions.

Gimme that performance boost, Nintendo. I'd hand my current Switch off and pay a little more for it.

Re: Pokémon Sales Slump To All-Time Low In Japan, Despite Strong Worldwide Performance Of Let's Go

Regpuppy

@KingBowser86 How is changing the combat from one type, to an entirely different type, not a fundamental shift? It's a core part of the main games, and changing it to action/3D combat is enough to shift it into another genre.

Sure, it would still be Pokemon, in the same way that Super Mario Odyssey and New Super Mario Bros are both still Mario games. But even Mario still releases games with the classic formula, for those that still like 2D sidescrollers, and they keep a clear separation between them.

I mean, if you're asking for a spin-off with new mechanics, I am not against this. I'd likely play a 3D action Pokemon game. But that doesn't mean they should ditch the core series entirely. That would be silly, because there are still people who consistently buy and play those games.

Re: Pokémon Sales Slump To All-Time Low In Japan, Despite Strong Worldwide Performance Of Let's Go

Regpuppy

@KingBowser86 Again, when you talk about changing the combat that much. You're talking about making a fundamentally different game. To the point where it's just a different genre. Which, honestly, is fine. But doing so, without continuing a series with traditional mechanics, is just asking for a lot of their core fans to give up on the series. This makes sense for a series that's flat out dead, but that's not the case with Pokemon, which still pulls in millions in sales. Despite releasing so often, that it's honestly giving the fanbase game fatigue.

As for balance, you still don't seem to get it. I'm not against them trying to make as many viable pokemon and team set-ups as possible. But, as I keep saying, it's impossible to have a perfectly balanced game across the board. With 800 Pokemon, of various types and gimmicks, some are just going to be weaker. There is no reasonable amount of testing that can playtest that perfectly. Especially since it's almost impossible to predict how the player meta will shift. This won't change with a 3D combat. In fact, it will make it even harder and more expensive to balance things out.

You bring up Smash, and how it's balanced. Give it a month, and despite their balance patches you're going to see obvious trends as the player meta adapts. Some characters are still going to be seen as broken, or OP, and some will be considered useless. Throw some more balance patches in, and the process is repeated. Tiers will keep developing, and some characters will go on being underused.

Re: Pokémon Sales Slump To All-Time Low In Japan, Despite Strong Worldwide Performance Of Let's Go

Regpuppy

@KingBowser86 I'm not even sure what your point is anymore. You went from talking about balance, to talking about making it entirely different genres. Which is what we just call a spin-off.

All I said was that regardless of how hard they try, people are going to create their own tiers and team set-ups. Because the meta of a game is purely based on how players use game mechanics. Could the series use some changes or balance adjustments? Sure, but show me a competitive game that never needs this.

Even games as simple as Pokemon Go have metas, with tiers and optimal teams. It's just a natural side-effect of having competitive games with overlapping mechanics in play. The only way to get around it is to create a game with no choices.

Re: Pokémon Sales Slump To All-Time Low In Japan, Despite Strong Worldwide Performance Of Let's Go

Regpuppy

@KingBowser86 I think you have an unrealistic view of what a game's meta should be. What you're asking for is virtually impossible, given the scale and how the meta evolves depending on what people use game mechanics.

There is always going to be some imbalance in an asymmetric game. Which means tiers, optimal set-ups, and "useless" pieces will exist. The best they can attempt is for their to be as many viable combinations as possible. The only way to have a perfectly balanced game is to give everything the same stats. Which literally kills the whole point of games like this.

Re: The Pokémon Company Is Now Hiring For An "Upcoming Mobile Game"

Regpuppy

@MattFox Game projects get cancelled all the time, by bigger publishers. The difference is that they're not usually announced, until it's a sure thing that's less than a year out. Nintendo unfortunately jumped the gun on Metroid Prime, likely eager to buy time for big games like Smash and this year's Pokemon. But that doesn't mean other Nintendo games, developed by other internal studios, are also going to experience similar issues.

This definitely does not reflect on Game Freak, which is still it's own seperate entity. They like to release Pokemon during holiday season, and have done so consistently for awhile now. As for when they announce details, it can be anywhere between January to May. Though, considering the circumstances, I wouldn't be surprised to see a pokemon direct sometime in February. But it can always come later, and I wouldn't start worrying about it, unless we make it to May without any info.

Re: WarGroove Supports Cross-Play Battles

Regpuppy

@Retupmocnin As long as it doesn't use their code or assets, it doesn't break copyright. Those other games you're referencing usually flat our use Nintendo's copyrighted names, ripped assets, or even chunks of code. These are all a big no no. That is a lot different than simply being inspired by a series.

Also, whether it has a similar niche as another Nintendo game doesn't mean much. If It's on a Nintendo console, Nintendo gets a cut. Nintendo definitely gets a bigger cut, for their first party games, but third party games help fill the library. First party games are not meant to be the sole content on a console, just the main draw.

Re: Random: Microsoft Really Digs Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Regpuppy

I feel like people read way too much into these tweets. Every time a studio, or publisher, says ANYTHING smash related, you see the rumors start flying.

Just don't get your hopes too high for any specific character, folks. We have people who fell for the Grinch leak hoax that are still salty and disappointed.

Re: God Of War's Art Director Is Still Drawing Realistic Smash Bros. Characters, And They're Amazing

Regpuppy

These are interesting, but I can't say I'm a fan of most of them. You can definitely tell what type of characters he's use to designing, because he seems to like putting abs and human-like muscles on a lot of them. In regards to detail, it's definitely impressive. But you can tell he's not a huge Nintendo nerd, because a few of his rather big character details are off.

The most perplexing one, to me, still has to be Fox though. He took a very lightweight and agile character. Then gave them the bulk of a body builder, for some reason. I'm not sure how that makes him more realistic.

Re: Nintendo Hosting New Indie Highlights Video Presentation Tomorrow

Regpuppy

The only indie project I want info on is Wargroove. Aside from that, I'm just not really interested right now. So I'll probably just wait for the cliffnotes version of this stream.

On the other hand, I'm with everyone else in waiting for this years first big direct. So I've been cutting down on the internet to avoid all of the fake leaks. Lol

Re: Mario, Zelda And Star Fox Games Are Joining The Nintendo Selects Range In North America

Regpuppy

Getting both LoZ:MM and Starfox 64HD for my collection. Already got the originals, but I tend to keep a few extra copies of my favorite games with a second 3DS in a big case. (Don't ask why, it makes sense for my situation.)

Now if only we could get a proper Starfox port, or new game, on the Switch. Starfox 64HD-DX, Starfox Zero DX, a remaster of Starfox Assault, or just anything. Starlink was nice, but I'd like a proper Starfox not linked to an awkward control scheme.

I wouldn't mind some HD ports of the mainline Zelda games either. But BOTW kind of scratches that itch for now. So I'm not as hungry for it as I am Starfox or Metroid, on the Switch.
