Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans have apparently lost their minds after Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Twitter account reached out to Nintendo of America’s Twitter account on National Compliment Day.
Microsoft’s social account sent a single tweet in Nintendo's direction, revealing its love for the ultimate Smash Bros. entry on Switch. It was the wording of the tweet that encouraged fans to wildly speculate:
For a number of fans, this is apparently enough evidence Steve - the default avatar in Minecraft - is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a DLC character. Alternatively, this could be nothing more than a play on words because Microsoft now owns the Minecraft IP and the game happens to be available on multiple Nintendo platforms.
Joker from Persona 5 is currently the only DLC character we know about right now (excluding Piranha Plant). There are still another four characters to be revealed.
Do you think Minecraft deserves some kind of representation in Smash Bros. Ultimate? Is this just Microsoft being its usual self on social media? Tell us below.
Yes! Make it happen Microsoft
Steve is Building His Defenses!
No!! Ef Steve! Bring The Bear and The Bird
it wouldn't be shocking to put him in tbh. even, if i don't like the idea.
no thank you please
Its amazing that it isn't represented already by now as one of the biggest games of all time, and if they do do this, I be really happen as there isn't any game that I've played longer than minecraft
The same how the chairs confirmed Waluigi?
@fafonio Amen to that 👍
Banjo & Kazooie would be more preferable over some rando name Steve. I'd even settle for the Halo guy.
Banjo should come first. Then we can (Edit: talk) about Steve. Banjo deserves better. Please Shuntaro Furukawa, make it happen even if is as costly as Cloud.
They have a lot of potential in Smash, in my opinion. I would prefer a stage or assist trophy, but I think they would almost be similar to the Miis. They don't really fit one role, and have so many tools that I think being customizable is necessary.
However, anybody who thinks Steve is confirmed because Microsoft happened to use an extremely common phrase is very desperate. This is dumb.
Doomguy and Neku Sakuraba pls
This will be the easiest character for Sakurai to make, just a bunch of cubes.
i hope not wasting a character slot for steve would suck how about banjo instead of him.
Banjo and Kazooie? Yes, please.
If the rumor that Steve will have a Master Chief skin as an alternate costume is true this would be kinda amazing imo.
I just got the pun, ahah~
I hope it’s true because Steve in Smash would be awesome
Heck anything Microsoft in Smash would be revolutionary
Over the years we have had loads of previous gaming characters that we still love to this date... We can't turn a blind eye to popular games and characters within those games. To be honest everyone knows Steve even if they arn't big fans of Minecraft, the character is Iconic. Move sets would be interesting to see though.
As long as one of the DLC characters is Doomguy, I don't care what the others are.
Make it happen, Nintendo and Bethesda.
My kids would love it
Steve would be a terrible choice. He is far too clunky for a fighting game. I would actually say there is far more evidence toward Banjo.
Sheesh, people start rumors from the pettiest things. So, Microsoft likes Smash Bros. So what? That doesn't mean anything other than exactly what is said.
@GyroZeppeli No! Leave room for Sora!!!
I really hope so, Minecraft is one of the most important games of all time even if it isn't one of my favorItes. Steve makes as much sense as Pac Man.
I feel like people read way too much into these tweets. Every time a studio, or publisher, says ANYTHING smash related, you see the rumors start flying.
Just don't get your hopes too high for any specific character, folks. We have people who fell for the Grinch leak hoax that are still salty and disappointed.
@Aslanmagic exactly why I think this would be great. Nothing against Banjo & Kazooie, hope they show up, but Steve would be a bigger deal for this younger generation by far.
I must be the only person on the planet that doesn’t like Minecraft.
Steve is an ugly MF. It’s like a bunch of terds swinging on a basic wire frame.
I hope he isn’t in smash.
I'd probably get bored with him very quickly...just like the game he's from.
Please Nintendo, make justice to these two.
I would love to see Master Chief join as well!
Who knows, maybe Banjo Kazooie could make a return and... a Forza driver?
That'd be nice.
I'd LOVE a Minecraft stage.
Eh... Minecraft? ...sigh. ...Did we cover a pseudo block builder with the addition of a Dragon Quest fighter? ...I’d much rather have a Hollow Knight in Smash. Minecraft just feels unimpressive.
The Smash Bros DLC characters will probably be some characters from current or past PlayStation exclusives, if Cloud and Joker are of any indication...
I doubt Banjo-Kazooie would garner interest in anyone who doesn't already have Smash Bros.
Steve, as much as I don't like it, is likely to gain mroe recognition from Minecraft, which is HEAVY in popularity even now, would likely appeal to an even bigger crowd.
Which do you think is more applicable for Nintendo to gain mroe Switch units sold?
My money is on 2 of the characters being Soulja Boy and Octane from Rocket League.
Yuck. We only have 5 characters. Let's make them count, shall we?
IF there is Minecraft-related DLC, it should be commissioned and paid for by Microsoft and distributed for free as part of a software update seeing as it's a great way for them to advertise their own products.
I would hate for my bucks to go toward such a simplistic and uninspired character. Hell, I'd rather have Qbby as DLC (that handsome MF) than a Minecraft character, and Qbby is as simplistic as Nintendo characters get (though it does not negate the fact that he is a handsome MF).
If Minecraft is in Smash then I’m not playing it anymore. Yes, I will gatekeep and will be elitist in the fight against Microsoft stuff. There’s no way they’d be good enough to make it into a Nintendo game like Smash let’s be real here.
Okay Nintendo, I’ll cut you a deal.
You can put Minecraft Steve in Smash ONLY if you add Don Bongo from the Devil May Cry series as a fighter as well.
Too bad Steve Balmer isn't confirmed for Smash DLC
Could be master chief too, I’m fine with any of them.
A Steve Mii costume would be more appropriate. I may be a little old for Minecraft's key demographic, but I don't think he's quite earned his spot to stand alongside gaming's giants.
If we're talking characters, there's a certain bear-bird duo that comes to mind. Granted, I'm biased with nostalgia. Green male Samus would be an okay pick, too.
@Paraka I disagree. Where were those Minecraft fans when Nintendo allowed Minecraft to be in the Wii U and the 3DS? Did Minecraft reach 30-50 million sales on the 3DS? Also, this new Nintendo under the management of Shuntaro Furukawa is focusing more on the loyal fans. An example of this is Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, King K. Rool, Simon Belmont, Ken and Dark Samus being in Smash Ultimate are all proof this.
As someone who has been holding out hope that Banjo would make it in before Steve, I can not deny that this tweet was clearly teasing some sort of Minecraft content in Ultimate.
I'd definitely prefer Banjo but I guess Steve would be fine. 🤷♂️
Why would anyone buy Minecraft on the 3DS? It's the most inferior version of the game. Even if it did sell well, expecting ANY game to sell between 30-50 million units on a single platform is ludicrous.
I love Banjo and would prefer him in Smash, but it makes much more sense to have Minecraft representation in the game. It's one of the best selling games of all time and the most influential/relevant ones. It makes as much sense to have Minecraft in Smash as it does Sonic, Pac Man, or Mega Man. People here are showing a little too much bias just because they aren't interested in Minecraft. If you don't want it in Smash, fine, but don't argue that Banjo Kazooie, games which haven't been that relevant in years (and Nuts and Bolts definitely didn't help that), would make more sense than the incredibly successful Minecraft.
@Spudtendo I am not against a Minecraft character to be in Smash. What I am mean is that Banjo should come first. Do you want to see the uproar that will be unleashed if Steve comes before Banjo? It will create the greatest division in the Smash Bros community since the Melee fans vs the Smash 4 fans. I do not want that to happen.
@Spudtendo Trust me, it will be as horrible as the Nintendo E3 2015 Internet uproar. It will damage Nintendo more instead of helping it.
Please, just... no... just no.
I prefer Banjo and Kazooie.
@SamusLv7 it's not that deep, sweetie
@CharlieSmile perhaps I exaggerated a bit. Sorry for being dramatic. Thanks for noting it malady 👍
My theory is that Steve will make it in as a 3rd party Mii Costume dlc. With possibly Banjo and Kazooie making it in as DLC characters. I mean given the love Nintendo has for Rare, and has still expressed that love through easter eggs like what was in Hey Pikmin on the 3ds, it's very possible. Not to mention the cut Rare spirits data miners found in Smash Ultimate.
@SamusLv7 As much as I don't want Steve in, I don't think it will be terrible. At first people would be upset because Banjo and Kazooie would be cut, but then everyone would end up getting Steve and people would ironically like playing as him, like how people have accepted Piranha Plant.
Something about a destructible Minecraft stage strikes me as something that would get from Ultimate.
How about a nice compromise. We get banjo but he comes with a minecraft stage that changes itself like the mario maker one.
The only way I would be ok with Minecraft dlc, is if you can build the stage yourself using blocks. I wouldn't mind Steve as a fighter so much, because as naff of a character he is, Smash would be at least capturing the spirit of the game.
@patbacknitro18 Perhaps. Your idea about a Steve DLC Mii costume with possibly Banjo being a DLC character sounds the most reasonable thing for Nintendo to do.
@NickOfTime90 Sounds good. Even better if the DLC of Banjo includes a second stage like Spiral Mountain in a special DLC character pass for $8.99.
Given we already have a pretty exhaustive list of characters already I think the DLC will be some more avant garde choices and Steve (and Joker) fits the bill perfectly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see ‘Default’ or Pink Panda from Fortnite make an appearance. I’d still secretly love Alex Kidd.
Steve has great character potential, has a massive gaming legacy, has millions of fans, and would be a milestone for Smash. He’d be a Microsoft owned character from what was originally an indie game. Steve over Banjo for me, but that’s only because I haven’t really got a connection to any of the Ultimate newcomers, nor Banjo. Steve is an icon in recent gaming history, and an icon for my childhood.
Would be cool if they are a character similar to the Miis. What if they add him as an option to be a customizable character (with different clothes and movesets). That would be really surprising and out of the box thinking for a Minecraft character(s). And the stage would be different everytime, with the stage hazards that bring creepers and such.
But at the same time, for a Microsoft rep, I feel that Master Chief is more of a rep. Would also like Banjo Kazooie, heck why not all three shoot, go all out.
The way I see new characters
Atlas rep - joker
Sony rep- crash bandicoot or spyro
Square Soft rep - Sora
Retro rep - banjo and kazooie (with skinscolors resemblaling old rare characters like conker, DK64 , perfect zero, etc)
Microsoft rep- everyone! Create Steve or even yourself in the block form
@Ttimer5 I agree with you. That way everyone will be happy
The outburst when Steve is confirmed and Banjo and the Halo guy are just costumes/alts on him.
I want this real. Because of the sake of Doomguy & Rayman..
@Alex18 Rayman is a spirit along with Mario-Rabbid, Peach-Rabbid, and Kong-Rabbid. If spirits deconfirm fighters you'll be needing a different Ubi rep.
Banjo Kazooie is the most obvious choice and would be a win for both companies.
Manic miner, please!
I really, really don't want Steve in smash. I even go so far as saying I won't buy the DLC if Steve is included.
Doomguy and Banjo and Kazooie yes please maybe even Rayman
LEts be honest.... as much as Minecraft is popular ... nobody knows this effing Steve. It’s an uninspiring generic avatar. Doesn’t deserve the spot as iconic gaming characters.
The game may be. But it’s protagonist ... nah....
I hope not. There are way more iconic characters that deserve being in Smash before Steve. Plus Steve has no personality, he's just a default avatar.
@SamusLv7 that would be even better:)
If this actually happens, I'll have to keep my game on the update before he comes out for the rest of time. :/
There was a rumor right after the game came out that Steve would be a dlc character. One of his alternates would be Master Chief. This could be a foreshadowing tweet.
@SoIDecidedTo according to thar rumour the dlc would be joker from persona 5 because a enchanced persona 5 port is coming to switch.
Edrick from dragon quest (3? Dunno) with skins for the playable character of DQ 7 and 11 because 11 is coming to switch.
Steve from minecraft with named skins for alex and master chief because of minecraft dungeons.
Ryu hayabusha with a skin for his nes design because either ninja gaiden 4 is coming to switch or ninja gaiden sigma collection.
And finally doom marine with a skin fir his doom 64 counterpart because doom eternal is coming to switch.
And doom marine would be revealed alongside doom eternals release date at bethesda’s E3 press.
Steve would be nice, but banjo or master cheif would be so much better.
I was never really a fan of non-Nintendo characters in Smash Bros., and I'm not sure how to feel about non-Japanese characters. Particularly ones that don't even belong to a franchise of Japanese origin.
Now obviously, with Ultimate, there's already a host of those present as either spirits or assists, but so far, there is no such character to be found in the playable roster.
I'd quite frankly find it extremely weird for Steve to be the first such challenger, but I guess his game is awfully popular on Nintendo platforms, and in Japan (and the world) in general.
Hmm yeah would rather not have Steve ,but it better then banjo in my opinion
Steve would probably be the most boring Microsoft character choice. Of course the #1 hope is Banjo because of the N64 legacy but even a Forza car would be a more interesting character than Steve.
A lot of these leaks suggesting Steve also suggest that we could be also getting Ryu Hayabusa and Doomguy in the Fighter Pass.
Well, if I get to Rip & Tear up fighters with Minecraft music playing, so be it.
If there is going to ge a microsoft owned IP I'd much rather a Battletoad or Conker.
@MysteryCupofJoe I never said he was a good choice. The most probable character would be Master Chief since he’s always been a Microsoft character. Hard to think of a newcomer phrase.
Banjo & Kazooie Fly By!
I would love to have Perfect Dark representation!
My vote is for Steve. Besides being massively popular, the creative fighting possibilities could be fun. And though his "personality" is a blank, his geometry is unmistakable and iconic despite being utterly simplistic.
He is more likely than any RareWare character I'm afraid to say.
@GyroZeppeli Don't worry about it. I was just being silly. Here is my list for characters: Sora, Ninja Gaiden's Ryu Hayabusa, Rayman, Banjo Kazooie. MineCraft would be great but I am not that hooked on it.
Honestly, I think a Dragon Quest character will make it in since it is crazy popular in Japan.
@aaronsullivan That is my issue. He has a blank personality. He is going to feel like a Mii Swordfighter. Give me someone with life please to make a DLC purchase worth it!
No please no.
if they add someone from microsoft let them bring someone from killer instinct (tusk or jago)
Or banjo and Kazooie
or Conker etc they deserve it.
I would prefer Cuphead, Banjo, or Master Chief!
@MasterJay It is also an indie game.
My son would go absolutely bonkers if this happened.
Look, I'm 22, so I'm between the people who have nostalgia for Banjo Kazooie and the kids who grew up when Minecraft was the biggest thing. My little sister loved Minecraft. I liked it. Neither of us have actually played Banjo Kazooie. From where I'm sitting, as far as Microsoft owned characters go, Banjo is the more charming character, but Minecraft is the bigger game. Its sales numbers are historical. Its UI and design have been influential. It's been popular since I was a kid to the present. It's had a major effect on the game industry and is universally recognizable. Banjo isn't. Banjo Kazooie built a great game on Mario 64's foundation, but in influence or popularity or gaming history, the Banjo Kazooie series isn't on the same level as Minecraft. I'd totally get it as a business decision if they added Steve, and it would catch attention. And a lot of Minecraft assets are already on the Switch. I'd still rather see Banjo though.
This is either a tease indicating something, or testing the waters of Smash, and Minecraft fan reactions.
I'm with MikeGamer, we need Steve Balmer in the roster.
I do think seeing a Minecraft themed field and Steve in the game could be neat, but I seriously doubt that one tweet is enough to suspect something like that.
@Dodger What a thoughtful post! Even though I don't like Steve, I can appreciate where you are coming from.
@MysteryCupofJoe I don't think it would quite be like the Mii fighters, because Steve does represent the whole Minecraft quirkiness with his actions, and there is plenty to bring to it, but it is a fair point. I mean... Simon Belmont, Pac Man, many of the characters don't have much personality, either, but the lack of personality is not a plus.
Joanna Dark please!
I've heard these rumors for a few months. Joanna Dark would be cool.
But so far eh. I'm not buying the DLC unless we get some sweet characters.
pls no. Minecraft is a dead meme. Give us Banjo & Kazooie instead.
There are as many five year old children clamouring for steve in smash as there are blood cells in my body popping at the mere thought of it. None of these leaks are true. granted my view of leaks as a whole has been skewed by the grinch leak incident. Erdrick and ryu would be cool but i dont think they are going to add ANOTHER swordfighter from an rpg since they have cloud and the fire emblem characters which are way more popular and memorable than erdrick, and ryu(the one from ninja gaiden) is just too forgettable. Doomguy i cant see getting into smash solely based on the character himself, or lack there of in this instance. Theres nothing to doomguy, he's just some guy with guns that shoots demons alot, a character needs to BE A CHARACTER in order to get into smash. And now for the one that is the main topic steve. While yes, minecraft WAS a very popular game, it has fallen extremly from its fame and is now just screechy five year olds, "family-friendly" youtubers who are the equivalent of droids, and people with sentient though just trying to get a cheap laugh. And again with doomguy, theres nothing to steve. He technically doesnt count as a character as he is just a skin. So who do i think will be the dlc roster? Probably sephiroth, for the square rep and to go with cloud, banjo-kazooie, since microsoft and rare are both down with putting in the iconic bear and bird, another fire emblem character, which one is open for debate but possibly hector because of the heroes event going on, and possibly Alucard/Trevor for more castlevania rep.
I mean the rumor is whatever, but whats with all the people comparing steve to banjo? Like is that supposed to be a deciding factor to who gets in, which character you personally want more? Lol
I think Minecraft characters would have a similar move set to mr game and watch
I don’t mind either way but I’d really love The Dragonborn and The Doomslayer if we’re talking 3rd party characters. I don’t care about banjo kazooie either
Knuckles voice Oh no.
Given that Nintendo has dibs on the characters and seemingly every character seems to tie in with an upcoming game on a Nintendo console, I don't have high hopes for that.
As tons of people already mentioned, Banjo and Kazooie would be a much better addition
I'd love to have Banjo-Kazooie, Fulgore / Orchid / Jago (a popular Killer Instinct character), Conker, and Joanna Dark as well. Those (besides Donkey Kong and Goldeneye) marked Rareware's peak during the N64 era. The characters were a part of the Golden era of mid and late 90ies gaming. Rareware's outstanding support and quality helped the N64 to survive against the rise of the Playstation. I think Banjo could have been a fighter in Melee, and he would have been a veteran fighter from there on out - if it wasn't for Microsoft.
Anyway, times have changed, Microsoft acquired Rare and other studios: Bungee with Halo, and Mojang with Minecraft. Minecraft is, as many said, a global phenomenon, extremely popular in Japan especially. Nintendo even collaborated to make a Mario skin pack for Wii U- and Switch-Minecraft. Nintendo's obviously way more focused on Minecraft then Banjo or Halo.
I try to forget Banjo and other fan-favourites like Chibi-Robo, Isaac, Geno, Waluigi, Saki, and Kararte Joe/Chorus Kids. They're just not significant enough when there's something like Minecraft knocking at the door. Hope's up for the next game though.
I can see steve. He woukd be quite the terrific character.
Its either that or the fabled duo.
@Doger Excellent argument. As I said before, I am not against a Minecraft character. Also, popularly and sells numbers doesn't equal always that a character has earned a place to be in Smash. If that was the case then characters like Ice Climbers wouldn't be in Smash because they haven't had a game since the NES era.
One of the reasons why Banjo should come first is because he has PERSONALITY and because his games helped the 3D Platforming genre.
Man, I'd rather have Banjo-Kazooie like seemingly everyone else on this site... but holy crap. With how everyone is overreacting with unneeded hate of Minecraft, I hope Steve makes it in so he can start mining salt as a recourse!
Let's be honest though. The nostalgia for Banjo-Kazooie will bring less fans to smash than the "masses" that like Minecraft.
Ask yourself, which character would bring in more money for both Nintendo and Microsoft? If one of the two were actually going to make it in the game then the answer should be pretty obvious.
A Steve moveset would be really fun as well. There is so much to pull from. He would make a very interesting character to play as. (Though, Banjo-Kazooie would too)
@NIN10DOXD Thats the point, thats why he SHOULD be added.
The whole post said was They liked smash Bros nothing else. I don't know how that would make Nintendo put a dumb character like steve in Smash brother. (DLC 1 Joker from persona 5) I think was a great idea. no steve. and the post doesn't say banjo kazooie is in it either that is as dumb as the character steve. Put Some classic video game characters.
@CharlieSmile I agree steve an stay in his own game
@Coolguy5000 I mean if they make him work while still staying true to his origins than Sakurai should win a Nobel Prize.
Even if this tweet is not a good base for speculation, Minecraft guy makes sense.
I'm amazed however, that nobody in this comment section mentioned the possibility of the Monster Hunter as a possible DLC-fighter. Rathalos is already in, the Hunter is just busy farming Great Macaos and co until he / she is ready.
No idea what else they got, but I'm ready for any new character - probably each one will be fun.
@SamusLv7 I agree with your statement. Do my boi Banjo first then we can consider (put on list of over 1,000+ choices) Steve.
@Gibb I could never get into Monster Hunter 4's hours of item hunting, but I would love Monster Hunter as a character. His down b has to be drinking a potion - heals him, but locks him into his stupid eternal potion drinking animation.
@Dodger That exactly. A character that should reward carefully planned out plays in a game that doesn't seem to require it at first glance. Compare Ganondorf's Warlock Punch, but with a self-heal.
Come to think of it, I do remember seeing Minecraft grass blocks in a Home Sheep Home 2 level. Also, why is everyone asking for Banjo? It's not gonna happen, get over it. Sorry in advance.
@MarinaKat Banjo's not happening, Rare's too busy with the new Battletoads and Sea of Thieves. Please understand.
@fafonio Steve should be in. Banjo kazooie is repetative and forgotten while minecraft is new, fun, and always fresh.
Wouldn't be my first choice, but I like it!
I await for the day when someone comes up with a valid and unrefutable reason, that isn't just "banjo-kazooie is dumb, boring, and repetitive(which it isn't)" and "minecraft is the second coming of christ(which it isn't),why steve should be in over banjo.
@darkswabber Can't believe someone thumb's downed your comment when you specifically said Rumor. Yep, that's exactly the ones I saw in the article. (SOrry, just getting on my laptop and seeing you commented. Thanks!)
hell yeah it happened
It was a mith today its real.
