My gut says the majority will be faves from Splatoon 2. But then I think this is a demo, it might not directly translate over to the full game. So they might also go all out and showcase a crazy assortment that won't be there in the main game. The drop off might annoy people, but they could head off any surprise saying these are prototypes or something.
Definitely one way to get ahead of datamining and have your updates too.
I feel multiplayer games can thrive on a shorter, more iterative refresh cycle than other games that need to be full on evolutionary. Both Splatoons leaned in hard on content drips to keep things fresh so a mild overhaul isn't out of the question.
It's especially notable that hacking was a problem in Splatoon 2, so a hard restart comes with the hope of better security for at least a while.
a-go-go screams Viewtiful, but they said it's a new IP
"Trilogy" confuses me because I'd personally consider Bayonetta & Astral Chain superheroic in fashion. Still if they mean classic transform into a costumed hero I guess I see it.
Obviously working an Ultraman angle which is nice.
I'm still picking NA/EUR.
While it is a bit static, but it's clean and iconic, you'd make a statue of Samus like that.
The JP version is more active, trying to fold in the visor effects makes it busy. The reversed 0.4 is a nice touch to communicate the overlay is on her perspective, but it's a clue I had to pick up on.
That looks lovely. Makes me think of the Link's Awakening remake's toy like vibe. It works very well with the look Mario RPG was going for. It's not an industry thing to simply hire fans that prove they know what a remake needs but then again, Sonic Mania happened.
hmm, I might pick up monster hunter stories. Maybe they'll use it's engine to remake the first game, but why leave it to chance.
Switch conversions of all of these would be fantastic, both for exposure and preservation of the period Nintendo got into something and insisted multiple screens were the future.
No idea this was a thing. Given it's basically a PC with a Switch form factor, I wouldn't call it a rival outright. The audience it's for is right on the tin, PC gamers who like the switch and wish they had something more dedicated than a tablet. That's the real rivalry.
Unless you count emulation, and given what butts Ninty has been with their virtual console libraries I can see that.
Shortness isn't necessarily pure time. Not only do certain genres have expectations of how long a typical play will last, but there's a degree of perception, especially when you fold in your enjoyment of the task.
I, for one, don't like grind. I don't mean for completion's sake or by choice, I mean it's a barrier to progress. Whether you're too poor or not strong enough to survive the next area, it could have been negated entirely with better balancing. SOME games can make the core action fun enough you never notice the grind. But in an RPG, I'm going to notice my response to them kidnapping the princess is spending the next month of game time killing every damn shrew in the immediate area.
Contrast this with wandering around in a metroidvania. I usually love this. Whether it's finding where I have to go, or backtracking to stuff I couldn't reach before, that's my jam. Especially if getting around never feels like too much of a chore. Assuming I'm not genuinely lost, I never notice I'm doing it for hours and feel that is time well spent.
In a way, Nintendo stepping away from the power game and AAA titles it caters to isn't a bad break. Yes they're less involved in those fights, but it makes Nintendo a distinct ecosystem that doesn't have to keep up with the next era of gaming (least of all when tech is feeling the pinch from pandemic disruptions). Plus, a disturbing lot of the AAA scene has kinda devolved into putting post purchase economies ahead of actual enjoyment. The biggest AAA things I was into last gen were sony and nintendo exclusives to begin with.
I feel keeping waggle capability is THE most underutilized aspect of the machine. Not a complete waste of money, but not really earning its keep.
Thanks to my father one Christmas, my house is Nintendo's ideal design. We both got Lites and share the original on the TV. The Lite model resolves most of the portability issues (the memory is still a deep sin we did nothing to deserve), but it's created it's own issues with how they deal with group access to content. I can add my eshop stuff to my lite, but my sister would have to buy her own. That never felt very household friendly. I get it; Netflix had to crackdown on account sharing, but it's kind of a pain.
I don't know how it is in other homes, but the "no Netflix" thing feels a bit trite. We live in an age with smart TVs and dozens of dongles and other machines that can will make your non-smart TV smart enough. So is it really a problem Switch isn't one of them? REALLY? I suppose if it's the only device in the house you'd be annoyed you'd have to track something else down, but that's a stretch.
I love it but I'm pretty sure I don't $170 love it. Yes you get the tactile joy of construction alongside the piece itself, but I'm not sure if that really balances out the cost of 3(ish) big games.
I was never actually a big fan on Gamecube's final BWAMP. It felt like an off-note. GBA that was some good stuff. Does the switch click actually count? It's not the start-up sound.
@Moshugan When I saw the reveal I suspected the reports were over-extrapolating off the gear up to the OLED version. But both of your theories might have hit this nail on the head.
I can believe a side by side development for an enhanced model to tide us over until a proper 2 comes out. AND I can also see OLED was going to be a distinct Pro but then backtracked into a SKU glow up because it wasn't necessary.
Of course if this is buying them time for next gen, Switch 2 had better be markedly beefier. Doesn't have to roll with the other two, but it does have to do what Switch can't.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Yeah, $150 is a fine enough difference between a notable reduction of features. The Lite's small screen can be a pain for games designed to impress, but a decent slice of the eshop has simpler looks that work fine on portable scale.
As for the base model, I'm not seeing anything to warrant saving a mere $50. I expect it will either quietly phase out like the launch version, or get a price cut and continue as a mid tier option, but not for a while. Right now, Nintendo wants the OLED model to make a big splash. The small difference will only help steer people to the OLED.
At least the pricing isn't another dock situation. Or Joy-cons, or Pro controller.
I guess we should praise Iwata Nintendo isn't making us shell out as much as a game on a frigging carrying case.
Do we know the price between these models?
Switch Lite still has a role with it's smaller form factor, price, and handheld only design.
But if you're in the market for a new/another full Switch, price will be the only saving grace to warrant the LCD Switch's existence on shelves. If there isn't a significant difference, I'll be stunned it and its dock aren't phased out.
Fairly clever eliminating the black border from the old model created enough room for a bigger screen without altering the body shape. Almost like they had spec'ed for this model from the beginning but were waiting until the cost was more profitable.
Kinda figured they weren't going to shake up the ecosystem.
They made a sexier model to be sure, but the only gains assume you play off-TV, or have a LAN set up. More storage is... nice? But 64 is still far cry from what we're able to add, and they could add for way less at a production scale than we'd ever pay.
Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission are easy 10s. All built from the same bones. Liked the first Prime the most, all were strong, but the trilogy is an easy 10.
I can cut NES and GB some "for the time" slack, but not for Other M.
The gameplay was almost a cool Super evolved thing, however, the FPS missiles were stupid, the story demeaned Samus, and the only add to the lore was at this point the Federation were jerks (ironic most of the games are jobs for them).
I don't know what people don't like about Samus Returns. It made the smartest use of the upgrades with a new powerup system that didn't feel game breaking.
I'm sure they have been tooling around the idea. There might even be working concept models in their offices. Interviews about past consoles usually say something to the effect of "they were working on it shortly after the last model launched, etc."
Thought 1; there's a line between the current console doing fine and time to think new model. And Switch is doing better than fine right now.
Thought 2; at this point they probably have the tech for a full successor vs a pro model. Both Sony and MS tried pushing pro models and still moved on. In Xbox's case it just confused the landscape. That's not to say the next thing couldn't be backwards compatible (preferably natively and not "I can boot up a virtual environment").
Classic Nintendo. They'll do something (eventually) but never breath a word of it. It's probably a "never speak ill of the company thing". If they never talk about it, the reports are just a noisy minority. I bet the only reason this was turned around so fast was it came on top of a big sale period.
I don't think they ever announced they modified the repair program to replace bad joy cons. And certainly never addressed if switch lites or future joy cons were more enduring.
This has made downloading games suck. I can at least buy since sales are happening, but queueing more downloads kills it, putting the system to sleep kills it, letting the system fall asleep kills it, opening games kills it.
Squatting on the main screen, doing nothing until the download is done works, if you go through the 4+ attempts for it to take. It's like I've been slapped back to the Wii era.

Re: Introducing Koco, A Cute New Character Appearing In Sonic Frontiers
Better hope this trailer slaps. The BOTW allusions when it was announced brought mockery, the demo made it look dull.
Re: Talking Point: How Were You Introduced To Metroid?
My first encounter was technically the first one, but found it convoluted and hard. The first I completed and found cool was Metroid II.
Re: Everything Announced In The Latest Splatoon 3 Direct - New Stuff, 3-Player Turf Wars, And Rewards For Splatoon 2 Players
Can't wait until table turf is going to be made physical in some fashion. All you need is a grid, some chits, and the cards.
Re: Move Over Paper Mario, A New '2D' RPG Could Be Heading To Switch
Not bad. Even brings back the Hero +1 set up.
Re: New Splatoon 3 amiibo Revealed, Including Inkling, Octoling, And Smallfry
Oo, another chance to get Pearl and Marina, nice. I'm sure Deep Cut will appear as well.

Re: Nintendo Reveals A New And Colourful Splatoon 3 Switch OLED
Well it looks nice, but I don't collect consoles or need a new Switch for my TV.

Yikes. Kirby with hair is wrong. In renders it looks like an extra limb, and prince Dedede; Was that their idea of cute?
Re: Random: Nintendo Wasn't The First To Introduce Region Locking, After All
Fascinating. Granted this is more a licensee pulling a fast one than a company directive.

Really need to finish the first one. It's like a SNES game punching above it's weight class.

I wonder if they've ever did anything about the hacking problem Splatoon 2 had.

Good move for drawing attention back on Splatoon and reinforcing the expansion pass is a season pass for Nintendo stuff.

So they're going with triangle strategy. At it does kinda sound like a military maneuver.
