this is awesome. i am hyped to see what brilliant stuff these creative japanese minds come up with. my favorite mario maker levels were mostly from japanese uploaders
I am so happy for the Switch. Game Builder Garage is doing great. 💚💚
Fans: "Nintendo should get more people to make Switch games!"
Nintendo: "Say no more"
So the regular Switch sold almost double the amount of all other systems combined, including the Switch Lite that is still barely behind the second place... And the entire top ten of software sales is for the Switch... (one is a Microsoft published game though!). I still haven't seen a real PS5 of whatever the deal is with the X Box's name (the "series X or S" I guess, after X Box 3 was called One and 2 was called 360, it's a real mess in my opinion, but I guess they couldn't be calling their system "2" when the direct competition was called "3" and had a better known name already). Then again, I've barely gone out of my forest, let alone to a city. Literally.
PS5 outsold Switch Lite. It's time for Nintendo to go third-party and then make a Switch Pro to reverse falling Switch sales.
Does that cover the analysis surrounding the Switch or did I miss something?
Does Nintendo Life publish USA sales? Nintendo owns Japan so there really isn't much point in these charts.
@IronMan30 this is the beginning. It’s officially over for Nintendo in Japan now. All we wanted was a traditional console with a standard controller etc etc....
@WiltonRoots yep, that's it. Nintendo just tries way too many gimmicks. Sony is king of video games in Japan and always has been because of their traditional consoles.
I mean, it can seem cruel to some people, but this is exactly why Nintendo is not incentivized to come out with a more robust Game Pass like system. Why do they need to when they command the top ten?
OMG...
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was 404 Not Found from the chart.
@Anti-Matter It’s tearing up the UK charts though. Not sure about how it’s selling elsewhere. Debuted at #1 there, and had a better second week than first. Not too shabby.
@IronMan30 @WiltonRoots
I don't even think it was a beginning of Nintendo Switch fall down.
I like some gimmicks from Nintendo games (not every gimmicks from Ninttendo was fun to play).
But to see Sony abandon Japan market, i think PS5 will have hard time to please Japanese gamers as some Japanese peoples still do not like with Western things.
@imgrowinglegs
I think Japanese gamers still have different perception with Ratchet & Clank franchises. Like it was not Japanese enough.
@IronMan30,
I am getting that feeling as well, Nintendo are indeed doomed, if not this year, then without doubt the next.
@WiltonRoots,
And it had to be very powerful too.
@Anti-Matter I was joking about how things are perceived in the gamer world...I find it all hilarious.
Time for people who've never even been to Japan to say that Japanese people don't like home consoles because they don't have TVs. (just ignore that the main Switch consistently sells way better because those numbers don't support the nonsense stereotyping)
It's the hybrid nature of the Switch that makes it so overwhelmingly successful in Japan. You can play on TV at home, on the train to and from work/school, etc etc I've said this all before. But people still don't seem to get just how big a deal the hybrid design is.
Sony didn't pay attention. The PS Vita remained popular in Japan for years after it fizzled out in the west. If anything Sony forced it to fall off the charts in Japan by refusing to continue supporting the platform. I know I know I joke about Sony copying Nintendo with stuff like motion controls, but if Sony had released a hybrid machine, instead of a wannabe gaming PC, I bet they'd be doing much better in Japan.
@IronMan30 You forgot to say "Nintendoomed" if they don't do what you say.
@Anti-Matter I agree, I'm just making fun of the general narrative surrounding Nintendo.
@johnvboy it's only a matter of time before people start saying that earnestly. After seeing it for 2 decades, it's kind of funny.
Well it's interesting to see Xbox actually sell decently in Japan.
So happy for this game! Hopefully Nintendo learns the right lessons. Keep doing experimental games and not every game needs to be priced at $60.
@HotGoomba
I think because Japan have strong internet infrastucture + Sony abandon Japanese market so some Japanese peoples choose XBOX series instead to express their disappointment toward Sony.
Well another dead week for Sony and the PlayStation. Resident Evil Village is gone from the top ten and even Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart couldn't even save it.
I’m surprised by how much monster hunter rise has slowed down in Japan. Most of the 3ds entries hit about 4mil sales and with the fast start of rise I was thinking we would hit 4mil by December. There is still time but this slowdown is very surprising to me.
Stock price is looking decent as well! Good week for Nintendo.
Big jump for Xbox this week.
i am so happy for game builder garage. people just keep making such cool games. cannot wait to see where mario golf debuts next week.
@ChakraStomps sales for the US are only revealed monthly and yes, Nintendo Life usually cover it
Good week. Switch is chugging along. Cementing a third version is probably not happening.
Series X is the biggest surprise here. One can tell how effective the E3 presentation was
@Heavyarms55 I think Sony's strategy as of PS3/PSP was always rooted in a big contradiction.
They pushed the hardware/best graphics line on console, especially with PS4 they placed absurd emphasis on it being the most powerful system on the market. But at the same time were trying to sell the same audience on a handheld that couldn't possibly deliver what they conditioned their console audience to expect as a the bare minimum.
But they ended up with the west preferring the console and Japan preferring the handheld. So even if they came out with a hybrid they'd have lost the western audience to the xbox based on their own marketing strategy.
I think by not participating in the graphical Arms race Nintendo were best placed to release a hybrid that balanced power, price and portability.
@Dr_Lugae PS2 and PSP did good, it's the PS3 and PS Vita that Sony failed. PS3 had a rough start but eventually caught on while the PS Vita was destine to failed cause Sony wouldn't let go of the expensive proprietary memory cards and then pull away all and any first party support for the thing.
i have 5 of those games, im still on the fence with GBG though.
@PuppyToucher Not as bad as it looks, especially when you factor digital in. It's important to note that even super popular switch games dip below 10k after a month or two, but they continue to sell in the 5-10k range week after week. Too early to tell whether it's running out of gas.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi True but I think the PSP's first couple years basically got its foot in before Sony started to just focus on the power of their system to sell their games.
I think what sank the PSVITA was again the PS4 was all about being the most powerful system on the market. But the PSVITA wasn't even close, despite being "console gaming on the go" it struggled even with PS2 ports. Some of their 1st party studios like Naughty Dog explicitly refused to make PSVITA games because the system wasn't powerful enough.
I just think their console marketing was the antithesis to their handheld. Because presumably if someone didn't get an Xbox1 or WiiU because they weren't powerful enough. Then they wouldn't get the even less powerful PSVITA either.
GBG has been absolutely brilliant fun and deserves every success. What it lacks in pure scale, it makes up for in scope. There’s so much you can do with it, so long as your inventions aren’t too sprawling. The reception in the West seems to be more lukewarm, but I’m glad it seems to be finding some success in Japan. I’d recommend it to anyone.
@PuppyToucher
Switch having a big digital presence means the days of Monster Hunter games selling 4 million copies at retail in Japan are over.
