The latest Nintendo Direct was quite something, one of Nintendo's longer broadcasts and positively packed with reveals and updates. The structure was clever in terms of getting maximum attention, too, showcasing long awaited titles, entirely new games and getting broad multimedia coverage by unveiling the main cast of the upcoming Mario movie. The broadcast and related coverage was trending on whatever social media platforms you prefer.
Very much job done, from Nintendo's perspective, and early results in our own poll show a majority giving it 'A' or 'B' as a grade, albeit with a fair bit more weight on the 'very good' B grade.
A few moments certainly stood out as notable announcements. A key update came for Nintendo Switch Online, which is having a decently-sized 'expansion pack' and overhaul in October. Adding Nintendo 64 and SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis games is a welcome boost, as are the very collectable wireless controllers for each, but Nintendo is yet to outline the pricing for this expansion. Will it be an extra reasonably-priced option that can be bought in 12 month chunks, or will it be restricted to a monthly cost? It'll be intriguing to see the balance that Nintendo strikes, but by opting to pass some or all of the related licensing and emulation costs to consumers it'll need to tread relatively carefully to avoid a negative reaction.
The reveal that most delighted this scribe was an unexpected one — Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Its Japanese name and logo were accidentally leaked beforehand by Nintendo on its own website, but even so its trailer was still eye-opening. A shift to a large fully 3D world, in what looks like a post-apocalyptic human setting, it had the Kirby staples of abilities but a tone that feels completely different. We've jokingly compared its setting to Nier: Automata in a tagline, which isn't really accurate, but it's fascinating nonetheless. It also looks visually impressive, albeit the developers will no doubt be working hard to iron out performance kinks ahead of its launch next year.
Then there was the Mario movie cast, which is jammed full of A-listers. Nintendo is an extremely wealthy company, but it's still surprising to see it put its name and money into a project with that many big-name and well-paid actors. There have been a lot of hot takes about the movie since the announcement, most of which will be extremely ill-informed as Nintendo hasn't so much as released a teaser trailer yet. It'll be a headline grabber over the next year, though, much to Nintendo's delight.
And of course, the big finale claimed plenty of votes in our polls — Bayonetta 3. In typical PlatinumGames style it tried to trick us into thinking it was a sequel to Astral Chain, but such is the distinctive style of the series that many of us were probably exclaiming "it's Bayonetta 3!!!!" before the famous witch appeared. It was enjoyable and stylish, and officially gave it a 2022 window after years of silence.
Opinion in our team on the trailer is interesting. Much of it seemed to be set in a very grey, overcast iteration of Tokyo, and this writer's personal opinion is that it did look a little flat, lacking in exuberant colour. At this point it also looks like a 'late 2022' game, with some notable slowdown and blemishes that are to be expected during the development process but don't necessarily make it to the final cut. Ultimately however it's very exciting to see it, and if it hits the standards of its predecessors it'll be an outstanding Switch exclusive.
Beyond those big headlines are a lot of other announcements, and we'd suggest it was a particularly strong Direct because it had enough variety to offer something to just about everybody. Whether a big expansion for Monster Hunter Rise, right through to Triangle Strategy, the long-awaited confirmation of Brewster, retro delights like Castlevania Advance Collection, indie darlings like Disco Elysium: The Final Cut right through to cute experiences like Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition. The breadth and variety on offer demonstrates part of the reason why the Switch has established such a sizeable userbase and ongoing momentum. Whatever your gaming tastes there are consistently tempting games on offer.
Was it the best Direct, or in the top 5? [It had Banjo, Tom, so instant Best Direct Ever, surely? - Ed] Maybe that's debatable — it's certainly top half, but perhaps some other broadcasts have had more iconic reveals or moments. It was a strong effort, though, because it outlined a lot of quality games on the way that demonstrate a continuation of the system's momentum. The varied headlines it generated also keeps the Switch and Nintendo right at the forefront of gaming and entertainment discourse.
Nintendo's management, we suspect, will be reflecting on a job well done.

Best Direct for a long time mainly due to the Bayonetta 3 and Kirby reveals.
@HamatoYoshi lol it was more then just those 2 games.if it was only those 2 games the direct wouldn't have been awesome, not by a long shot
@Darkyoshi98 for me it was those 2 games. But on top of that we got the N64 announcement, the Castlevania Collection, Actraiser, Splatoon 3…….it was immense
It wasn’t a direct for me (except Bayonetta 3) but I recognise that this is a strong lineup the will make many people happy.
I still thought Wholesome Indie Direct June 2021 was the Best Direct ever for me.
Nintendo Direct 23 September 2021 was mediocre for me.
I found it good. My girlfriend did not. The Animal Crossing tease and no info on the BotW sequel did not please here. Though she did like the Kirby reveal.
I walked away impressed and excited. Especially at Actraiser Renaissance, like seriously wth?! I didn’t even know this was a possibility let alone, in the works, and done. And I’m so thankful for the CV Advance Collection as I haven’t been able to play em since trading my Wii U in. Now here’s to hoping Konami is working on CV DS!
I ended up grabbing CV and Actraiser now, and wishlisting Disco and Kotor.
For those that don’t know, Aspyr handled KOTOR on iphone, it’s a port of the pc original so higher textures/res than original Xbox version, and it’s smooth as butter on the phone, so the Switch version will be great too.
Also wanted to touch on CV and Act incase anyone was debating on em, they’re both great. CV is just like the previous collection / mega man collections - there’s different screen modes, audio selections, music player, artwork, etc…. Very nice package for $20, hell CV: Circle of the Moon is worth that alone in my mind.
And Actraiser is amazingly done. Fully revamped audio and visuals, it’s a “remakester” like Diablo 2. Both D2 and Act bring the games into the modern times, while leaving as many systems and such original as possible. AR’s got combat additions, as well as being smoother than the original in that department, and there is also small touches and minor additions to the overall gameplay. Very nicely done! Also has a music player, and you can select between original and remastered audio at any time. I’m not sure if original game / sprites exists inside or not. Only just finishing Fillmore now.
Any kerfuffle about "spoilers" was unfounded. This direct was full of surprises big and small, and it was one of the most tightly wound, well paced directs they've done without Iwata.
I wouldn't say that Nintendo kept the content a secret.
Bayonetta 3, Kirby and the N64 Online were all leaked before the presentation.
Literally anything new Nintendo was going to show was leaked.
The kirby announcement and n64 were pretty cool not mich else for me to see here, would love a starfox announcement of some kind
kirby, castlevania, paper mario being on switch online at somepoint and splatoon 3 were all what i wanted, only probblem was the time as i was out of it for like 90% of the actual direct itself
Don’t understand the complaints about spoilers. Pretty easy to avoid, I manage it every time now.
It was great but I was hoping with Shiggsy making an appearance that we would of seen what the Mario Odyssey team have been up to these past four years, considering they had nothing to do with Bowser’s Fury, they have been very quiet.
A lot of things showed there are things I'm probably not going to get, But I was just happy at the end bc It was, actually good.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed
All 3D Mario games are developed by Nintendo EPD Tokyo, including Bowser's Fury.
It was a good Direct but it would have been brilliant without the leak about Kirby and Bayonetta. Going to have to start not looking at the news before a Direct.
The last two directs have really been something for everyone. Unfortunately for me since I like a lot of genres this is going to be a massacre on my bank account. I'm hoping BF price drops will at least keep me under a grand. It would be cheaper for me to buy a ps5 and a series x at this point. lol.
I really hope Nintendo and partners keep up this momentum. Too many games not enough time is a great problem to have.
It was a good direct but I was sad to see mo mention of Advance Wars. It feels like this will be the final nail in its coffin.
Can't say I'm a fan of old games so a chubk of that direct was uninteresting to me, the Kirby and bayonetta 3 reveal were the highlights and splatoon 3 was the icing on the cake. The rest of the reveals/trailers did nothing. And it looks like 3ds ports are the next fad on nintendos list starting with Disney magical world 2
The N64 games should be have been sold as a collection with an accompanying retail release (and a bundle with the controller) rather than whatever the hell they were going for with their NSO “expansion pack”, which, if it costs any more than $10, will make heads roll.
One would think that 30-ish million paying subscribers would be more than enough to cover any licensing/emulation costs while incentivising new subscribers and maintaining goodwill among existing customers.
They won’t be getting my money either way, BUT, Game Boy games via the default subscription may have been just the thing to get me to sign up (though I would overwhelmingly prefer physical compilations).
It's a shame that the new Kirby, Bayo 3 in 2022, and N64 on NSO were leaked ahead of time as that stifled the surprise factor from the official reveals.
This Direct holds quite a lot of importance that some don't realize. We never got to see another BotW 2 trailer (obviously) and honestly, Smash deserves to have its own livestream for the amount of hype that was gained from that final fighter.
Why is this Direct important? Because it gave so much more value to 2022. This is what we all previously asked for. We asked for more NEW games (not the conglomeration of re-releases this year) and we finally got it.
If anything, Nintendo's trying to repeat their success from 2017. I think this Direct does deserve quite a lot more.
A new Kirby game and an update on a sequel announced 5 years ago is the height of it. Hardly anything mind blowing but not a disaster either.
@Silly_G The N64 games as a collection on a cart would have been nice, but at least when stuff is on NSO/NSO+ it not only adds more value to the service, but in theory future proofs the titles. It’s MUCH easier to bring the service over to the next system they make, than make the next system play the Switch carts. Given that I bought games on the VC across 3 different systems - 3DS, Wii, and Wii U like Link to the Past, I much prefer a unified structure or something like NSO going forward so that I can ensure my one purchase or sub carries over to the next system and the next system and the next system….
For me this was actually pretty mediocre. The only new game reveal was Kirby, and that looked excellent, but not much else was super great. The N64/Genesis NSO reveal is cool, I must admit, though it didn't personally grab me. They also did a minor bit of Mario Party Superstars news, which made me happy personally, though I was disappointed by the brevity of it. There was Triangle Strategy and Splatoon 3 news bits, but honestly I don't care about Triangle Strategy and the Sploon trailer actually turned me off a bit on Splatoon 3, I went from wanting to preorder to waiting for reviews. And then there was the Mario movie...and that was at least entertaining. And then I guess there was Monster Hunter Rise DLC, but I don't care about that. Bayonetta 3 was a great rereveal, but I don't think it was a good "one more thing" announcement.
Personally I loved it, it was the first direct where I yelled with delight and nerded out when stuff was revealed, definitely one of the best directs I can remember, at least for my taste.
I wouldn’t even consider it in the top half of Directs but I was still satisfied. As long as the NSO Expansion is $30 or under I won’t have an issue.
The N64 announcement was the highlight for me.
I just hope we get Snowboard Kids and Diddy Kong Racing. They would be brilliant online.
@westman98 Bowsers Fury was developed between Nintendo NST, it’s American devision and 1-Up Studio
@Meteoroid I was surprised that they didn't even mention it as an upcoming game. It's clear that this series has pretty much been abandoned by Nintendo as the last game in the series came out on the DS as a U.S. exclusive. I was hoping that they'd push the game a little bit so that maybe we'd get a new entry. Metroid has gotten non-stop coverage since its announcement 3 months ago while AW is ignored. It's Nintendo's choice in how they want to market a game but they don't seem too concerned about the series' future.
Not for everyone. There is a small group of Nintendo fans waiting for a new entry in the F-Zero franchise...
Good Direct, but unfortunately the best reveals were leaked ahead of time, so I would disagree about there being a few surprises. Nothing really surprising when you take leaks into account.
I am kind of surprised that shin V only got 5 seconds of air time and advance wars was not mentioned at all
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed
Bowser's Fury was developed at EPD Tokyo with assistance from 1-Up (who provides development support for many Nintendo games) and NST.
@westman98 Yes I’m aware EPD would be involved with assets from 3D World being used for Bowsers Fury, but the majority of the leg work was made by NST, hence all the western names at the end credits of Bowser’s Fury
I hope we can use the rumble pac or have it been built in that all if not it’s ok yay🤩
@Silly_G A collection of 9 N64 games would either have to be underpriced to try and reach a $60 value or each borderline remade for people to accept a price significantly higher than that.
I can understand some people not liking this expansion but I don’t think a purchasable 9 game collection would be a viable alternative.
@westman98 Actually looking the details up again, you are correct. It seems like there is a bit of discrepancy on the build of Bowsers Fury, not the tweaking of Mario 3D World port. Some say it was NST and some are saying EAD. The hack leak of the game revealed it was NST and1Up Studio earlier in the year. So sorry for the confusion there. I just assumed EAD gave them the assets from 3D World and NST and 1Up studio built Bowsers Fury.
If it was all of EAD then that could be exciting as this maybe a taste of the next Mario to come.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed
From my understanding, NST was primarily responsible for porting 3D World to Switch, while EPD Tokyo and 1-Up developed Bowser's Fury (with some development assistance from NST as well).
Regardless, a new 3D Mario for Switch has been in development for quite some time - the only question is whether it is a Switch or Switch 2 game, and whether it is released before or after the rumored Donkey Kong game that EPD is supposedly working on.
@Meteoroid
Yeah I don’t get it. You’ve now got people on here making out that the big new announcements weren’t surprises because of the leaks. That’s not how it works.
@nilcam
The last Advance Wars game wasn’t US exclusive. It was released in Europe under a different name and then in Japan as a limited download.
There was basically something for everyone in the direct
Definitely a solid 7 for me. Nothing that totally pushed it to the next level but some great surprises!
The amount of variety was what made this a great direct to me. Some really solid first party titles (Kirby 3-D, Splatoon 3), some long awaited and anticipated titles (Bayonetta 3), some great updates to Switch Online, some great third party news (Disco Elysium, KOTOR), and some just wacky random stuff (The whole Mario movie announcement).
Bayonetta was cool. 3D Kirby game could be interesting. Looking forward to the Smash announcement. The N64 games on Nintendo online is also cool
@Jprhino84 : I think 15-20 games for that price would be fairer, and perhaps another couple of volumes to round out the best of its library.
Personally I'm a bit worried Darksiders 3 will be delayed.
It's supposed to release the 30th of this month and it's still not up for preorder. And it didn't show up in the Direct either (though one of THQ Nordic's other offerings, Wreck Fest - or something - did show up).
Always funny to see how different the perceptions are. This direct was really lackluster for me. Kirby 3D Platformer and Wreckfest, hell yeah, but the rest...eh. The Indie World that happened recently though was one of the best ones ever. If there wouldn't have been that other one where Ori got shadowdropped, i would say it was the best presentation i ever watched...but you know...Ori <3.
Still though, even if it left me disappointed, it's great to see that so many are happy with this Direct!
@Dm9982 I LOVE that they remade Actraiser. The soundtrack alone is worth the price of the game! My controversial take is that I wish they would also redo part 2 as I think it's a beautiful and underappreciated sidescrolling hack n' slash action game.
@Grail_Quest Same here! My only complaint with 2 was no town building. Lol! Otherwise the action and everything was great. Would love to see a remade sequel just like Renaissance
"...With Something For Everyone.."
Exactly, games for everybody, There are games and surprises I don't like and others that I lovin', XD
And obviously, this Direct did exactly the same, it showed games and well, for me, some in my radar and other no..., as always, with my phrase: "I expected something, but, the same time, I don't expect nothing"
@Silly_G I’m confused, 15-20 games would be fairer for the price of what? Are we still talking about your purchasable collection idea? If so, no company is going to put 15-20 well known games in a retail package for a reasonable price.
This Direct had more announcements of announcements than usual but it's nice knowing Nintendo are going to be communicating more often. As an infomercial for Nintendo's next few months, yeah, spot on. As for game announcments. Again, plenty to be stoked about. More like this please. How good did Bayo3 look?
When the highlight is that they showed of a N64 controller for the Switch, you know it was a weak one. One of the weaker ones I'd say, feels like Nintendo is in a bit of a vacuum. Pandemic has hit them hard I guess.
And why is there a cross-over between Kirby and the Last of Us.
There wasn't as much I personally was excited about as some directs have, but still a lot of good and interesting looking games and some nice surprises.
Kirby and actraiser were the top for me besides games we already knew about like Dread and Mario Party. Castlevania Advance looks nice too.
I have slightly mixed feelings about NSO since I already bought Super Mario 64 and a lot of the sega games on switch, but overall happy they are expanding the service.
So they're going with triangle strategy. At it does kinda sound like a military maneuver.
Kirby, Bayo 3 were the standouts.
Wreckfest, if you've never played it then you're in for a real treat, it's an awesome game.
Best of all
F ZERO X ONLINE BABY!!!!
Shame I have to pay to play it but it will be worth it.
The Castlevania Collection suddenly being out right before my birthday was fantastic. Learning Knights of the Old Republic is coming to Switch is also great news.
The direct got me excited for many first-party announcements and NSO, but even some were absent. Alongside a new Kirby game, I also expected them to reveal Monolith Soft's new game, maybe an exclusive Resident Evil for Switch, the possibilities...
I noticed Nintendo really keeps the cards close to its chest. Compared to the recent Playstation showcase, Nintendo at least showed games that weren't too far off. If they did just like Sony, they could've announced Xenoblade 3, the next main Mario game and a new gameplay for BoTW2. Not to mention Nintendo still needs more games like Wave Race, think about it.
Thinking about it, that strategy isn't that bad when you think about the content. Some of these games could've been announced months, maybe a year ago. Why wasn't Bayonetta 3 at E3, for instance? When will we get the next info batch about Advance Wars and Pokémon Legends?
Maybe Nintendo needs a little change on its announcement strategy, it wouldn't harm to announce more titles far off from release, but not THAT off, with at least an scheduled year. More deep dives would be awesome too.
With a lot of games to analyze and theorise, it was overall a really good Direct, but even for the current landscape of Switch, third-party support could be a little better. At least we have Dying Light...
Nintendo did not need to have this Direct, they were pretty much set for the rest of 2021, but I needed it. Sometime it's just nice to have a large news blitz of games in a very enjoyable video format. Every Direct this year 2021 has been a banger with tons of diverse announcements and big moments (I guess I'm partially biased to Pyra/Mythra in Smash, seeing BOTW2 again, and Kirby). I hope Nintendo sticks to the 3-Direct Spring, E3/Summer, and Fall format for the future too.
@westman98 Interesting, so they have been busy working on both the next Mario and this new Donkey Kong? Sounds promising.
I’m wondering if Bowsers Fury might be the future of Mario with a kind of Open-World that changes after missions rather than visiting different worlds or kingdoms.
“Shocking: Nintendo Fans think Nintendo Direct is Perfect”
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed
All the Donkey Kong stuff is just rumor for now, but the idea is that the younger staff at EPD Tokyo were all huge fans of the SNES Donkey Kong Country games and were given permission to work on a new Donkey Kong game, while the rest of EPD Tokyo continues to work on the new 3D Mario.
@westman98 Fingers crossed for this as those teams are amazing, especially the Mario team and Yoshiaki Koizumi leading them now. I think he is still part of that team
@Lemmy_the_Koopa The F-zero fans did get something, not a new game but F-zero GX with online is pretty cool
Good direct glad to finaly see Bayonetta 3 , it was what I called for before the direct, kirby looks good, SMT is a day one buy for me , astral chain mascot appearance in the Bayonetta 3 trailer might hint at a crossover between the two universe.
Nothing announced peaked my interest. Though, I'd like to see some form of a Super Mario Bros remix, where they combine all of the 2D Mario's (in terms of power ups), with me levels, updated high res graphics and a level editor to boot. I'm not referring to Super Mario Maker, where everything is available, but limited to a particular version of the game.
Japans getting the Genesis 6-button controller and we’re stuck with the 3?!? I can’t do it. The six button would be a dope controller for sooooo many games
“Something for everyone”
.. I guess I’m not everyone… I thought it was all very weak .. I was kinda interested in n64 games, until they said you’d have to pay more for it (I already can’t justify the price of the yearly fee for Nintendo online.. I just don’t play Nintendo games online!)
Nintendo's confirmed 2022 lineup so far:
> Pokemon Legends Arceus
> Kirby and the Forgotten Lands
> Splatoon 3
> Bayonetta 3
> Breath of the Wild 2
Nintendo's is presenting a strong 2022 release lineup thus far. Pokemon, Splatoon, and Zelda are each guaranteed 10+ million sellers, while Kirby is looking to set a sales record for the franchise.
@ArmenianJedi13 Have you ever met Nintendo fans? We're a very hard to please bunch
Although Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are coming to Switch via NSO, I am still hoping that we get the 3DS versions enhanced for the Switch eventually
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed Not to mention the Mario Kart team. They've been quiet since Arms. The 2D Mario team has been quiet since Mario Maker 2 (which I imagine only required a small team since it was an expansion on 1).
The 3D Mario team did work on Captain Toad and Bowser's Fury, but those were relatively small projects.
The only good Directs are those with mega game announcements or major release dates. This one failed in that sense (not that I was expecting anything juicy) and it seems Nintendo has two tiers of Directs. One is mostly news and the other is big reveals. Directs used to be exciting when initially they were full of juice and have now lost their sheen. Nintendo would be wise to label them accordingly so fans aren't left constantly disappointed.
It was a fantastic direct, imo. It's nice to see continued strong support for Switch. I'm really looking forward to N64, Kirby and Bayonetta 3. I picked up the Castlevania Advance collection and I'm waiting to see if Actraiser will get a physical edition. I just hope I can get my hands on the N64 controller before it sells out.
I think it was an effective Direct: got us all talking in a mostly positive way, kept us interested and got us anticipating more news in October and some fun-looking Switch titles coming next year.
Something for everyone—except me! Nothing on BOTW2, Pikmin 4, Metroid Prime 4, Xenoblade, or that rumored non-Xenoblade MonolithSoft RPG.
Bayonetta 3 looks like it would run on GameCube. It might just be bayonetta's outdated hair, glasses, or the fact that she spouts unfunny one liners. So 90s.
@OnlyItsMeReid We did not get F-Zero GX, we just got F-Zero X, which is tied to a service I seldom use. So ugh... no...
@roboshort
Mario Maker 2 is a lot more than just an expansion of the first game.
But you are right - the 2D Mario developers should be working on a new 2D Mario game.
-kirby and the forgotten land
-monster hunter sunbreak
-triangle strategy (terrible name, but still)
-animal crossing update
-bayonetta 3
-splatoon 3
-n64 coming to nso with online game
imo it was one of the best direct ever
@roboshort Very true, long overdue for the next Mario Kart, will it happen on this Switch or the next one? With sales as massive as they are for Mario Kart 8, I can’t see Nintendo releasing another right now. It’s making too much dough for them
@Lemmy_the_Koopa My mistake, i get the names confused, also I'm sorry to break it to you but nintendo doesn't care about F-zero anymore, and neither does the majority of switch owners
@OnlyItsMeReid Why would Switch owners care, if they haven't been introduced to a new F-Zero since the GameCube anyway. At this point Nintendo basically can introduce it as a new(ish) franchise.
Also while I have no high hopes to begin with, this was I reply that the Direct satisfied everyone, which it did not do for me.
I wouldn't count out a revival, heck Advance Wars had a good run in the DS, withthe latest release before being on the Famicon, if I have my facts straight, so I wouldn't exactly count it out.
They just need to get off the inconsistent horse of requiring something new for some franchise, but not doing it with other franchises.
