Cast your mind back to the original concept trailer for Nintendo Switch (or watch it above, up to you). Nintendo had shown photogenic people playing Switch in the park, on a plane, at rooftop parties, and also in esports. Though Nintendo has generally gone for a relatively low-effort approach to pushing its role in esports, avoiding a great deal of the pesky work and monetary investments, it has been slowly trying to do more. In the grand vision of late 2016 it was Splatoon 2 that would play out in a packed arena of excited fans, as Nintendo evidently envisioned big things for the franchise.
That didn't happen, for a broad combination of reasons, but the game was a success. It was certainly meatier than its experimental Wii U original, offering more content and options for solo or co-op play. The competitive multiplayer, of course, became the long-term focus for many, and you can still find players battling it out online with terrifying rankings.
Commercially it's been a success too, and an instance of a new IP from Nintendo making a mark - the original sold nearly 5 million copies on Wii U, impressive considering the system itself only shifted 13.56 million units. The Switch sequel has hit 12.68 million units to date, good enough to establish itself as the 9th best-selling Switch title at the time of writing.
How do we assess the success of Splatoon 2, though? It's sold a lot of copies and has an ongoing loyal player base online, especially considering the relative youth of the franchise. That said, it's well off more established franchises that have comfortably passed 20 million (30 million in some cases) sales on Switch; Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Pokémon. In the big picture of first-party franchises Splatoon arguably sits in a second tier; it's sold less than Super Mario Party, for additional context.
A success, then, but perhaps a slightly qualified one. Yet we can expect Nintendo to give Splatoon 3 a big push this year, not only in an effort to grow the brand further but because it's a huge domestic hit. Many of us like the Splatoon games, but in Japan it's got a more significant place in pop culture. Concerts of the game's brilliant music, merchandise, limited edition snacks and more - all were prevalent in Japan with Splatoon 2 in particular, following up on the huge impact of the original (against the odds). In Nintendo's home market it is a banker.
The question is whether Splatoon 3 can be a tipping point to take it truly into the top tier of Nintendo IPs globally. The development team has had a good period of time to work on the game, no doubt utilising the engine and tools from the first two games to enable the focus to be on content. The Story Mode could be the biggest yet, for example, and we've already seen some fun weapons and arenas showcased. After all of the foundational work in the original, and the expansion in the sequel, this third entry could certainly be a new level for the series.

The IP also has all of the tools to go to the next level and start contending with Nintendo's most established and iconic franchises. It's colourful, both family friendly and open to high-level skilled play, there's a lot of personality in the characters, fantastic music, and variety of content. It's also a game that gets close to a 'live service' approach in multiplayer, if Nintendo opts to continue running regular events and content updates. The tools are there, and assuming the quality of the game holds up it has the potential to be a smash hit.
Arriving this year with a huge install base of Switch owners, it's undoubtedly a big opportunity for Splatoon 3. What'll be most interesting is release timing, courtesy of an already packed first-party line-up. If, and it's a big if, development is far enough along, a Summer or early Fall release would arguably be best suited to the game's style and to give it breathing room from the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. This would also allow Nintendo to go big with the game at events like E3 or Summer Game Fest.
In any case, it should be an exciting year for Splatoon fans. Forgetting conversations about sales figures and so on, getting a second full entry on Switch is likely to be a lot of fun.

The sequel that no one asked for.
Even though I love the asthetic, the concept and execution, unfortunately I am not excited.
Triangle Strategy on the other hand...!
I’m less stoked since it’s Chaos themed but I will get it eventually.
I hope it stays fresh
@NOALink lol what do you mean? it's ridiculously popular
I mean… no. But then I’m probably not the target audience. So it’s a bit of a pointless poll. I’m sure people that are hyped for it are hyped for it.
I've got 1000+ hours in Splatoon 2 but hardly any of that is from the last couple of years so I'm pretty keen to jump back into the series with some fresh content.
I just hope they allow damn cloud saves
I'm a bit skeptical but hopefully Splatoon 3 fixes some of the issues I had with 2.
-Chunk grinding was really tedious and tickets were also a chore to get
-Salmon run was only in set dates, personally this isn't that big of a deal for me but I was probably in the minority for it
-Matchmaking with friends was god awful, you had to wait for a match to be over to finally play with your friends and even then they could be waiting for multiple games
This also was bad with league in the sense that you could only play with 2 or 4 people - never 3. Which doesn't make sense sense salmon run already has the option to fill in slots for you.
-The campaign for the first game was just a repeat of 1's but easier and less inspired, granted this is a multiplayer focused game but the lore of it is also a neat staple of the franchise at this point that people find interest in so it leaves much to be desired. At least octo expansion was really good.
These are just at the top of my head.
Overall I'm not really 'hyped' up for this sequel since I was mostly content with Splatoon 2, especially since they brought back splatfests and I didn't ask for a sequel nor thought we needed one. And from what I seen so far I don't think Splatoon 3 is doing that much to differentiate itself from 2.
Not to mention there are a lot more interesting games still out or coming out this year imo.
The first two games were primarily online competitive shooters. Even though the third game is suppose to have more of an offline single player story, I find it hard to be excited about it.
They better revamp matchmaking so that players can join each other better
Is there split screen? That's the only thing stopping me from jumping in.
I'm absolutely hyped for this one. I loved the second one but it did have some hiccups that @iLikeUrAttitude mentioned. I'm hoping for the QoL updates on that side of things, but overall, if it's Splatoon 2 but with new gear and maps, that's all I really need. I do hope that they try to improve the matchmaking with this one, though, considering that they recently invested a crap-ton of money into their online structure.
@HollowSpectre No split-screen which is a shame, unfortunately. Oddly enough, the first game sort of had split-screen, one person on the TV and another on the GamePad. Since the Switch is a more powerful system, I'm kind of surprised that there isn't at least a two-player split-screen.
Played Splatoon 1, it was pretty good for a month and then I got bored of it. Never picked up 2 and probably won't bother with 3
The last two games were a blast, and I'm going day one with this as well. Hard to say I'm "excited," but I don't get "excited" about too many series in general.
Hope this one has a meaty single-player campaign. Really enjoyed Splatoon 2's challenging Octo Expansion.
what many forget is that splatoon is bigger than stuff like ghost of tsushima
It's just an updated version of the same game, same as fifa and call of duty. pass
@StarPoint also split screen on Wii U sucked, idk why they did some balloon side mode that nobody wanted to play
I am really excited to actually be around for updates, new maps and weapons, etc. but I'm not sure if I'll be there at the start purely from a financial state. I'm planning on grabbing Pokemon, Animal Crossing and potentially Monkey Ball beforehand so I'll be in a bit of a pickle in regards to money by then but we'll see what happens.
I’m personally really hyped for this game, I really liked the 2nd and this seems to be bringing in more new ideas than just salmon run
@OnlyItsMeReid Yeah the mode itself was pretty poor, but at least it had split screen. I played it with my friends a few times.
I really want more done with Salmon Run. Unquestionably my favorite part of the series! Story mode and competitive in distant second and 3rd place.
I always wrote off Splatoon because just from looking at it I didn't think I would like it. Once I actually played it I was hooked! I'm kinda sad I didn't jump into the game when the Splatfests were going on. Definitely going to be looking forward to this game!
@StarPoint thanks for that. Now back to ignoring any and all posts relating to this franchise again.😁
Meh, I couldn't get into the last game
I am a huge Splatoon fan and have logged hundreds of hours into both the original and it’s sequel.
You make an interesting point when comparing Splatoon’s success to other Nintendo franchises. When viewed from that lens, I’d say it’s either at the top of the B-tier or at the very bottom of the A-tier.
With that said, I’d argue it’s more appropriate to compare the success of Splatoon to other online multiplayer shooters. It also comes up short from that perspective, selling way below the likes of CoD, though that’s partially due to Splatoon being limited to a single console.
In any case, I am very hyped for Splatoon 3, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up selling less than Splatoon 2. Splatoon 2 launched in summer 2017 when there really weren’t a lot of Switch games. Splatoon 3 is launching against a lot more competition.
I have been a diehard Splatoon fan since the first pre-launch demo. I don't think we needed a Splatoon 3 so soon, but I am all in for another run.
Gonna wait until I know more and see some reviews I skipped splatoon 2 cos whilst I enjoyed the multiplayer of the original I thought it was a bit light on content
It's not a game that appeals to me but it's really cool to see such a new IP blow up as big as it did. Really wonder what other new ideas Nintendo is just sitting on (and the well of forgotten IPs).
I absolutely loved the first Splatoon but I burned out on it and have barely touched the sequel as a result. No interest in #3.
I'm very excited for it!
There's something about the colorful aesthetics and hybrid pop/rock soundtrack that makes Splatoon feel way more refreshing and fun than other cooperative shooters on the market.
And the progression in the online play has kept me going back for more regularly in both Splatoon 1 and Spatoon 2.
Im looking forward, but I'm skeptical. There better be splitscreen this time.
@NOALink It's a top ten seller for Nintendo. Even lesser sold Nintendo titles get sequels.

I need to revisit Splatoon 2. Haven't played it in a while, I bet I will be rusty as hell...need to finish that story mode off.
I hope that Splatoon 3 will have very good and interesting story mode. And length will be about 15 hours minimum! And it's not counting length of possible story mode DLC for the game!
Splatoon 3 is my most anticipated game of this year. I didn’t get too far into Splatoon 2 though, as I probably didn’t even spend a quarter of the same time I did with the first game (I still put in at least 60 hours). But I’m in such a mood to now get back into the saddle and enjoy toying around with all the weapons and abilities.
Never played one because no single player mode.
Can't believe I'm technically already a veteran! Will be picking up any game with an Inkling in it
@AstraeaV There is a single player campaign in all three games, including the upcoming one. To access it, "Walk to the sewer grate or access it via the Menu by pressing (X) and selecting Octo Canyon." (Credit: IGN)
I am happy that Splatoon is blowing up as it is. However, I don't necessarily feel that a 3 was reasonable at this time. Splatoon 2 is still doing well enough for a relatively new franchise. But more Splatoon in another form would been interesting.
I've a feeling it's going to be off the hook.
I'm looking forward to hearing more and will most likely pick it up as long as they don't do anything to ruin it. That said, it's not my most anticipated game of the year, though. Hopefully the single-player ends up being very substantial and online is improved (no stage rotations and easier duo-queuing).
I'm pretty hyped. The game will release five years after Splatoon2 so I except some cool changes/improvements.
@Browny It's been five years now. That's much longer than the gap between the first and second games and long time for any game series.
I always meant to pick up Splatoon 2 but just a couple months after I got my Switch, the 3rd entry was announced. I'm looking forward to giving the franchise a shot.
From what we’ve seen so far, the game looks fantastic. What’s most concerning is whether having 2 games in the same console will split the player base or not.
While I enjoyed Splatoon 2, I got bored with it quicker than most games. I got the DLC to try and get more out of it but that was really difficult.
Splatoon 3 will need to have an original and much longer single player mode for me to buy at full price again.
I'm not like the biggest Splatoon fan--mostly because I suck at online shooters--but I still enjoy it. I still put somewhere between 70-80 hours in Splatoon 2. Hoping for a robust single player, and it would be super cool if they could make it co-op. That's the one thing I've always wanted.
I wonder if improving their online infrastructure is why they wanted to make another Splatoon game for Switch. Mario Party Superstars works great, and I've heard 3D World and Monster Hunter are also super good. Hopefully it will be much less common for players to get dropped now, which completely ruins the balance of the game.
I think Splatoon 2 could have had a longer life had Nintendo not axed the Splatfests so soon. It's hard to sell a multiplayer game when you cut big in-game events like Splatfests that were a large driving factor for long-time players and new players alike to turn on the game. It was nice to see some return for the early stages of the pandemic but that only proves my point. They were not events that took a lot of effort by Nintendo to pull off. A small dedicated team or even just a couple of programmers could have easily run regular bi-monthly or even just quarterly Splatfests to keep the fanbase engaged. Instead they did away with them and frankly the game cartridge just sits in most of our cases without getting touched except for the odd desire to vent some COVID-19 frustrations by blasting Inklings. I hope Nintendo keeps a Salmon Run type mode for Splatoon 3 & keeps online tournaments like Splatfests going for much longer than they did for Splatoon 2.
@Medic_Alert The octo expansion is great and offers a lot of variety. It is arguably a bigger difference than that between Splatoon 1 and 2.
One warning. Unless you enjoy Dark Souls or Super Meat Boy difficulty with long load times, it can be very frustrating.
I’m hyped it looks rad. Had a dream that there was a lightsaber type weapon…now I’m thinking that might actual be possible. Do it!
Personally, I really hope they take a chance on q more expensive story mode. Both games had great levels and were fun but feels like it could be a lot more. Totally realizing this is a multi player game but I think the solo could be epic
Oh of course.
Splatoon is the funnest competitive multi-player game I've ever tried. It's SOOOO addictive and so incredibly fun.
Splatoon 3 will bring fresh maps, new modes, new single player, revamped horde mode, new abilities, skills, gear and weapons, everything I need to jump back into the ink.
This game is mega hype!
@NOALink yeah how is that one of Switch's most succesful game is getting a sequel?! THE NERVE!
rolls eyes
Would have rather the team produced a new 3d platform DK adventure of Mario adventure.
It’s nearly 5 years since Nintendo in house studios produced Mario odyssey an amazing 3d platform game, what the hell have they been doing all this time. Let alone BOTW another 5 years gone by.
These games are amazing but don’t take the resource of a top end say PS4/5 game like Horizon Zero dawn.
Nintendo should be able to produce say a Mario odyssey sequel in about 3 years max, they have the engine they have most assets from the first game etc.
We deserve more and better from Nintendo in house studios.
Perhaps they went on holiday to the Nintendo theme park 😂
Splatoon 1 messed up my relationship with my girlfriend... Splatoon 2 messed me up on getting my Master's Degree... What are your evil plans now, #3?
@AstraeaV both have single player modes. 2 also has the Octo Expansion DLC that is single player. 3 will have single player too.
@Clark2k losing your house?
rip
I never played the first Splatoon, the second one was alright I guess.
I'll probably pass on the third installment.
They fixed almost none of the issues I had with Splatoon 1 in Splatoon 2, so I'll be passing. It's still gonna have the stupid limiting map rotation, it's still gonna have next to no game modes despite the many they could rip from the Third-Person Shooter genre, and it will always be Baby's First Shooter, which is disappointing.
I have never been interested in this series. I at least gave it a shot a few times, but...not for me.
I played 2 even though I'm not big on competitive multiplayer and it was fun while it lasted, but it's not something I really want to invest a lot of time in. The bigger issue though, is that from what we've seen it's just more Splatoon, I don't see anything that really sets it apart from Splatoon 2 (and people that played Splatoon 1 seemed to have felt the same), and that's what I need to see to want to buy it. A surprising new gameplay mode would help, as would larger and more open maps, but it doesn't seem like they're doing that so I may end up skipping. Splatoon is starting to feel like one of those series where if you've played one, you've played them all, much like NSMB. I want to see Splatoon actually evolve as a franchise before I buy in for another game.
The most skill-based shooter on the market. Really unparalleled in its gyro controls and movement options. I'll be picking up anything they put down.
I mean I could be persuaded.
@Clark2k Your will up to date? After Love, Success/money, then it’s you.
@valharian No. It's not. There's a full new single player story.
As long as 80% of he game doesn't require you to pay $20 after you've paid $60, then I'll be fine with this game. If this isn't just a simple platformer, and more styled as a story with a more open and grounded terrain, then I will enjoy this game.
@NOALink I asked for it.
Without Splatoon I'd have no social life whatsoever. it's the franchise that's gotten me through my darkest times in life. I can't wait for Splatoon 3 to drop!
@AstraeaV Where did you get that there is no single player mode?
I'm excited, but I can understand if the series has become stale to others. There are more derivative IPs out there though.
I bought 2 when it released just to give it a go. It didn't grab me, I got bored, then resold it shortly after. I'm gonna have to pass on 3, sadly
I think it’s a cool and fun franchise… I am just not much into shooters…this is definitely a hard pass for me. I will just play Splatoon 2 if I want to check it out.
Day one for me. I put most of my time in S2 into Salmon Run, so I really hope we get a new and improved version of that. I haven't played Ranked in years because I'm scared, so I'm looking forward to the chaos of everybody starting with a fresh rank.
Unsure, honestly. If anything, I'm not really much of a Splatoon guy myself and as much as I liked the first Splatoon on Wii U, Splatoon 2 felt more like an "Expansion Pack" of the Wii U game, in my opinion. Splatoon 3 is going to have to truly surprise me in order to get me to buy it.
Not sure yet, right now i feel like i have had my fill of splatoon, but it will probably lure me in eventually
I’ve got a stupid total play time on Splatoon 2, between 1500-2000 hours. All turf war. Never played the story or any other modes. I’m hooked on that core gameplay since Splatoon 1. All I need is new turf war maps, that’s it lol
Excited?
Rather disappointed.
I could live with a Splatoon 3 on a new Nintendo system, releasing this on Switch where we already have Splatoon 2 on, feels the same like the mess with Overwatch 2, it's mostly the same game in the end.
But that's the sad nature of such games, just in case some people forget about that.
I'm not a big multi-player person, so the news of this doesn't do much for me. I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum, though.
I enjoyed Splatoon 1 and loved the solo campaign. If there was a decent solo campaign id be tempted but its heavily geared towards online and multiplayer which i get bored with
Voted “probably” because I may not buy it day one, but I absolutely still want to pick it up eventually. Hopefully Splatfests last longer than they did in Splatoon 2 so the game can stay “alive” longer and people feel obligated to play it longer.
I hope it contains a great single player campaign this time.
Littérale I don’t remember seeing or hearing anyone asking for a third game in this series , it
came out of nowhere while people keep asking for a new Fzero, a new 3D mario , a new Kirby, the sequel to BOTW, a new star fox but Splatoon nope! Crazy Nintendo continue not listening to your consumer.
Bring it on. Love Splatoon games. This will be ace and can’t wait to play it on the lovely OLED screen!
I really enjoyed Splatoon 2 but would be moreso excited for 3 if Nintendo could do online play properly. I'd love to be able to chat with friends right from the dash, team up right from the start, etc.
idk, Splatoon just tries a bit too hard to be cool for my tastes. It doesn't really speak 'Nintendo' to me, it's more Ubisoft or something. Still it did bring in a new generation and that was the main point I think, so I hope the target audience enjoy this new one.
Yay, first time commenting!! Been lurking since late 2019, but I finally decided to join this particular community.
Anyway, I'm excited for Splatoon 3! It seems a bit unnecessary for there to be two Splatoon games on the same console, and I think that Splatoon 2 could have remained a top seller by Nintendo simply adding more free updates or DLC like Octo Expansion, but the new theming, weaponry, and world-building make this enough of a deviation to make it worth buying for me. Really, I just want a new and improved story mode. If they can achieve anything similar to Octo Expansion, just longer, I'll be satisfied. Anything else is just icing on the cake.
@munstahunta
Splatoon 2 sold over $13 Million copies….so they’ve made a sequel. How is this Nintendo continuing to “not listen to the consumer”?
Looking forward to splatoon 3 especially since splatoon 2 seems to be nearly dead, takes 2-3 minutes to find a game and that's not even on ranked.
My only concern and it was the same with splatoon 2 is that the re using of the maps, if splatoon 3 comes out and half of the maps are from splatoon 2 then they seriously need a lengthy proper story campaign or a LOT of new maps otherwise I might re consider buying this on release.
Its just so lazy to fill it with old maps and call it a brand new game, might as well just kept updating splatoon 2.
OR
Make one splatoon game and just keep supporting it for many years like other games such as fortnite, League, Apex legends, overwatch etc it was absolutely poor of them to stop supporting the game after only 12 months? Stopped the splatfests as well and recycled the same items in the salmon run.
Instead of keep updating the game with new maps and items they thought they could get more money out of us by keeping it and using it to make a brand new game. Very crafty
We will probably buy it, but it should offer something new, which splatoon didn’t really. We need splitscreen, or at at keast one copy matchup, 3ds atyle..so much more fun against friends, while sp.atoon favoured randoms..
Did but the expansion last year, but didn’t really play it.. should try..
@Clark2k
Splatoon 3 is going to summon a time machine and take you back in time to the release dates of 1 and 2, only to take both your relationship and degree away from you simultaneously.
Then it corrupts your Switch and maxes out your credit card on terrible $1 eshop games.
Depends: local, non transferable save game = no buy
Also please don't force paid battle passes in our faces 🙏
I'm not interested. I have never been interested in this franchise. The ugly character designs threw me off from the instant the first game came out.
The only thing that the splatoon franchise has completely let me down on is the lack of LOCAL multiplayer. Almost every killer Nintendo title and franchise allows for multiplayer with friends/family in the same room, barring just a few that I can think of and Splatoon 2 is in that short list. I want to be able to play with my kids and my friends locally on a big-screen tv without the whole local wireless setup, which isn't very intuitive or inviting. Splatoon 1 had a two player setup for local, but it was dismal and felt like no effort was put into it... especially with the nonsensical, "use rubber bands like this with a pro controller and a wiimote for the second player's controller". I love the games, love the franchise and can't wait to play it, but I would be absolutely elated to see a local mp option, using one game card.
As Reggie would say, my body is ready.
Local MP would be nice, even if splitscreen would be kind of weird in most modes.
@Rainz Good point!
Hoping to the dark gods that they did something about hacking.
Actually yes, I'm excited, specially to see how much it will change from Splatoon 2 to make it worthwhile.
Im ready to crush that crab robot thing to pieces
Am I excited? No. It’s a online multiplayer game with nothing else to offer for consumers who don’t play online.
Nope. The only Nintendo IP I have less interest in is Animal Crossing.
In my opinion they should release it as an expansion pack for a lower price, and save Splatoon 3 for Switch 2.
Apparently I missed splatoon 1 and 2, so I’m definitely gonna buy this day one so I can see what I missed
Really excited to play this game
I enjoyed the first two, but I'm in no rush for more of it. If the third game has a hefty single player campaign or tries something new, then I could be tempted to get it.
Maybe if the single player campaign is very substantial (online co-op through it too?)…
I don’t know, Splatoon 2 didn’t keep me going with it for too long. My interest in this one is really riding on how much they put into the single player mode
@BTB20 My mistake I guess. For some reason I was under the impression it was a vs game only.
@dimi Splatoon 2 WAS an expansion pack. The bulk of it's content is reused from 1.
@AstraeaV It pretty much is. The single-player stuff makes up maybe 5% of the total playtime for someone who gets into Splatoon. It's a competitive shooter first and foremost.
All the changes I want for this sequel are under the hood. Splatoon 2 had worse netcode and a worse ranking system than Splatoon 1 did. They can add all the colorful characters and gear and settings they want, if the game isn't mechanically sound then I'm not touching it.
I really hope they add the option to use traditional gyro aiming. That would be superfresh.
The announcement of Splatoon 3 is what stopped me from buying Splatoon 2 after almost buying Splatoon 1 before Splatoon 2 was announced.
I love me some Splatoon, but I'm honestly not confident that Nintendo will innovate it enough from 2. If they can really open up the world, expand the fashion, and more than anything, FIX the online play with friends, I'd be all in...but I'm sure it'll just be Splatoon 2 with some new things tacked on.
@munstahunta
When it comes to power; online functionality, better deals on 1st party titles, better storage options; F-Zero sequel, online voice chatting, Earthbound, better virtual console value/access; Joy Con drift that’s when Nintendo opts to not listen to the consumer lol
I'm sad because I recently got 2 and now there won't be anyone online to play with.
Splatoon 2 is my most played game on the Switch. 1500+ hours.
Not bad for a game that I thought I'd "just try."
Never looked back since. Of course I'm stoked for Splatoon 3!
Meh, I stand by what I said when it was first announced; this is too soon.
My personal circumstances have also changed as I have not been subscribed to NSO for a few months now, so I would not be able to play the main bulk of the game (unless Online becomes free again... which it won't).
Only thing that would save it for me is if the single player content was expanded bigger than ever.
i can’t wait for this! put a tonne of hours in to 2 with my son, and excited to do the same with this one
I played in nearly all the splatfests of the original on the Wii U, but Spla2oon didn’t hook me as much. It just lost some of its charm without the handheld 2nd screen, and there were just too many other games to pull me away on Switch, although I did like Salmon Runs.
So it’s wait and see for me - I may invest in Splatoon 3 to find out what the new mammalian intrigue is all about.
@OnlyItsMeReid
Hey, I loved the balloon sidemode. It was fun while you waited for matches.
Nah not excited. I have no explanation of why.
@JakedaArbok same with me, lurked around a few years before start posting, glad you decided to join.
Kinda pointless with a splatoon game already on switch. Where is a 2d Mario.
@AstraeaV
What are you talking about? There is a single player mode you silly pants!
Day one! I love this series and it always puts me in a good mood. Salmon Run is my absolute favorite as I tend to prefer co-op over PVP, but I still have a blast with Tower Control and Rainmaker.
@EriXz
Thanks! I’d been of some mind to join for a while now, I really just wanted to make sure I understood how it all worked first before I joined. I guess it’s not rocket science lol.
Online is so addicting and fun! I have never loved and hated a game so much. I have 2,460+ hours played in Sploon2. Splatoon 2 was one of the last games for the Switch that I purchased and if it would have been the first I don't know that I would have ever played the others. It's that good. Only other game that comes close in overall replay-ability is BOTW. Bought Splatoon 3 the day I saw that it was available for pre-order. Git gud or get inked! Squidbag you later. GG
Very hyped for some more Splatoon. I can’t wait.
How about a new F-Zero now, Ninty?
If i'm perfectly honest, i completely forgot it even existed.
So no, not at all interested.
Generally not interested in purely online games. And a single player mode tacked on to the 3rd iteration of a franchise really doesn't change much ^^
Hope everyone else likes it, but not my cup of tea.
It needs a 4-player split screen mode otherwise zero interest. I played enough of previous versions that friends owned already, which is more than enough.
It's huge in Japan and I enjoyed the first two, but I feel like the whole aesthetic had become a bit boring and ironically dull. Strangely, not something I've ever felt for another Nintendo game series.
Maybe it has come around too soon. I'd much rather get a new 2D/3D Mario game.
Unless they fix the map rotation and make it more of a voting deal like Mario Kart, then I'm passing. I get so bored playing the same maps for multiple hours.
Whataboutism
@Indielink
It is a bit of a wake up call to be reminded that it's been almost five years since Splatoon 2. Where does the time go?
I would be excited but it just looks like Splatoon 1 part 3. After all this development time, it's shocking that the third series entry is just more of the same.
Actually, it's the year of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, but yeah sure we can squeeze in some squidkids
I doubt it'll happen, but a Splatoon game would easily be among the Switch's best if it added in local multiplayer and bots. I'm not very interested in playing Nintendo games online.
I hope they bring in voice chat , and ability to team up with friends in ranked. It’s a common thing today to play with friends and have some voice chat, they have to add it as this point in 2022.
@ArmenianJedi13 I don’t understand, what did you expect? Considering Mario and Zelda are pretty much the same formula every game.
I might not get it day one, but definitely early on. Splatoon 2 was fantastic fun, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's new.
"The Splatoon series is so cool and exciting! I hope they stop at two games and immediately chuck the IP in the same dumpster as F-Zero."
-Splatoon fans, apparently
Day One purchase for sure, was hoping they'd make a sequel after they announced the Splatocalypse. To get my adrenaline surging, we need a dedicated direct to show off everything new.
In Splatoon 1 I have 700 hours, in Splatoon 2 I have 3400 hours. I'm a hard fan so I'm really looking forward to S3. I'm not interested in the story mode, I never enjoyed it and Salmon Run is very boring. I only enjoy ranked (I'm X rank in all mods) and sometimes league is fun too, when quality players get together. My only request for S3 is to improve matchmaking, because the western lobbies are ridiculously bad, I would appreciate a more challenging X rank for players. And option to turn off the music would be very nice.
Looking forward to a challenging and meaty story mode, something like when you combine Splatoon 2 main story and the Octo DLC. Aside from that just stable multiplayer servers and I'm good. Ready to sink it hundreds of hours on this game.
@Unit_DTH
Agreed. Mariokart 8 sells like crazy because four people can play at the same time for hours on end. Splatoon 3 needs to have a robust local multiplayer suite to EVER break sales. I would have preferred DLC for Splatoon 2 and a new game for the next machine. Splatoon 2 should be THE Splatoon game for Switch encouraging sales for years to come, instead it will stop selling almost immediately when 3 releases. Daft.
@NOALink No one asked for the original Splatoon either, and it ended up being one of the best things to come out of the Wii U.
This is one of the best IPs from the 21st century Nintendo. Mario, Pokemon and friends, frankly, are so last century. 😉
@NOALink I didn’t ask for another Pokemon’s attempt at a decent 3D game either. But they are releasing one this month with reskinned Zelda and Monster Hunter Rise/Story assets and gameplay. And don’t get me started on Metroid Prime 4…, I doubt many born in this century asked for it to begin with. 😉
I look forward to a new story mode.
I look forward to Splatfests and I hope they can use modern cloud infrastructure for this game and just keep iterating on the game. I don’t think it should have Battle Passes, but I would like to see Nintendo experiment with long term development for something. Honestly if in mid 2020 they had rolled out $5/month for regular significant Animal Crossing updates they would have a lot more money and players right now. Splatoon 2 got axed way too soon. It should be selling for <$30 including DLC given that it is 4 years old and Splatfests are over.
Also, I think it’s unlikely but I will hope for a first class coop mode(s). Salmon Run is my favorite. I like playing with, not against people unless I know them or the balancing is really tight. Grizzco weapons all the way.
Will we finally be able to play locally in split-screen? Probably not.
With so many great Nintendo IPs abandoned I wonder what makes Nintendo release a second Splatoon game on the same console.
I think that, despite the game being fun or not or having a large fan base or Niche, it's very strange they gave so much support to this game while other beloved franchises keeps collecting dust, I guess they now better than some of us, either way, I will voice my opinion with my wallet
If it's the same standard as Splatoon 2 but with fresh content (which is what is sounds like it is) then I am game totally. It's a great gaming series so far.
Day One and Story Mode, by the way.
There's only ONE thing I want from Splatoon 3: the option to turn off motion aiming on the X axis. In Splatoon 1, motion controls would aim on the Y axis alone (up and down). You'd pan the recticule left and right with the analog stick. In Splatoon 2, motion controls aim both axes. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The controls in Splatoon 1 were perfect and is one of the many reasons the game is so brilliant. Motion aiming in Splatoon 2 is comparatively unplayable. This is all I want. This one option.
The Splatoon 2 game has a serious flaw in my opinion. The game has no OFFLINE mode against bots. If Splatoon 3 suffers from the same problem, I won't buy or care about this franchise.
In mario Kart 8, you have offline battle mode. And also online. I want to have my games forever. 10 years from now no one will be playing Splatoon 3 online, and 80% of the game will be in the trash.
I unfortunately have the impression that nintendo, in order to save money, tries, by all means, to create designs that don't require a lot of effort in artificial intelligence.
@Joriss we need offline gameplay agains bots and difficult settings.
@Gryffin I remember the motion control aiming on the Wii U being on both X and Y axis and I'd use the analog sticks to help my aim. I could be totally wrong.
@Ralizah Alright, I changed my mind. I will be getting this even though I never played Splatoon in my life
