Re: New SteamWorld Game Sales Fell "Slightly Short" Of Thunderful's Expectations

Quarbit

I appreciate their willingness to experiment with different genres, but I'm not a Steamworld fan because I love the world-building and lore. I'm a fan because I love 2D Metroidvania games and Steamworld Dig 1 & 2 were awesome. At the end of the day, they're a business and they need to make games that their audience wants to buy; city-builders are not it.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Talks 8-Inch 'Switch 2' Screen, Joy-Con Compatibility

The Joycons are horrible. I've never held a worse first-party controller in my life and I've played on dozens of different systems. I quickly bought a Pro Controller for docked play and bought the Hori Split Pad Pro for handheld play so that I would never be subjected to the torture that is playing on the joycons. I'm really surprised how many people are saying they like them.

Re: Kickstarter Is Cracking Down On AI And Promoting Human Creativity

@stungun Governments already take care of people in need. During the 20th century, massive investment in social programs was made by governments all over the world to address social inequalities and many countries became welfare states. Pensions, universal healthcare, social security, welfare, etc. all became commonplace (at least among wealthy countries) in the last 100 years due to economic prosperity and technological advancement.

I have a utopian and optimistic view of the future because that's what history indicates will happen. As automation takes over and unemployment goes up, governments will be under pressure by the public to address the issue because that's how democracies work and we've already seen this happen many times before in history. Rich CEOs can only pressure governments so much; at the end of the day, that rich CEO is still only one vote.

Re: Kickstarter Is Cracking Down On AI And Promoting Human Creativity

@LilyGoMEOW 30% of low and middle-income jobs will be lost because of A.I. by 2030? That's awesome!

We should be automating low-skilled and tedious work so that we humans don't have to waste our time on that crap. 1,000 years ago most humans worked as sustenance farmers to survive. Do you want to go back to those days of back-breaking labour or are you happy with automated farms freeing us to do better and more productive work?

The transition might be painful, but fighting progress is bad for everyone. We need to embrace AI and focus on transitioning people to new and better jobs.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Today's Nintendo Direct?

Quarbit

It was okay, but too many remakes and ports. Super Mario RPG is awesome, but I have no interest in a fresh coat of paint for a game I've already played. I want new games.

Pikmin 4, Peach's game, and Penny's Big Breakaway were the highlights for me. I hope we see more on Peach soon.

Re: Poll: Will There Be A June 2023 Nintendo Direct?

Quarbit

I don't see any reason for Nintendo to put out a Direct in June. Right now Nintendo is riding a high from Zelda, so they would be best served by lying low for the summer and doing their big Direct in August or September.

E3 is dead, guys. There's no need to keep June as the month for the big showcases. It can be any time of year now.

Re: Talking Point: What Is A 'Traditional' Zelda Game, Anyway?

Quarbit

What a weird article. Everyone and their grandmothers can tell that BOTW was a huge departure for the Zelda. That isn't debatable. Some people liked those changes and some people didn't. Obviously, those who dislike BOTW value different elements in Zelda. This article feels like it's just trying to gaslight oldschool Zelda fans.

NL: "Oh, BOTW doesn't feel like a Zelda game to you? Well, you're clearly wrong and here's why".

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2023 Nintendo Direct?

Quarbit

There honestly wasn't a lot for me personally, but that was a great direct. Nintendo had both quantity and quality of games in a wide variety of genres. The only downside is a lack of big AAA games with the exception of Zelda of course. Not surprising for February though — you save the big guns for the end of the year.

I'll go with 9/10.

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Year In Review - Our Team Chats Big Switch Games, Butt Discourse, And Sakurai's Cat

Quarbit

I was definitely disappointed in the Switch this year. There wasn't anything — from AAA to indie — that interested me. I did buy Kirby due to the excitement of finally having a Kirby 3D Platformer, but I didn't care for the game. Pretty weak year overall.

Fortunately there's no shortage of older games to play, so I had a great year of gaming. Just nothing from 2022.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Dragon Quest Treasures

Quarbit

I was curious about this game, but those reviews put me off. Yes, they're positive, but those positive reviews also mention shallow gameplay and tedium. This seems like one of those games that's just a giant checklist to complete with numbers that go up. Basically it's an idle game like Cookie Clicker.

Re: Japanese Charts: Tactics Ogre Debuts Strong, Outselling God Of War: Ragnarok

Quarbit

@RushDawg Whether Sonic is in the top 10 or not doesn't matter. The strength for the rest of the top 10 is going to vary greatly based on what games have released recently, so relative position is best ignored. Sega's investors aren't interested in Sonic's placement relative to other games, but instead total units sold.

45k opening week for a AAA game from a Japanese company in Japan isn't good numbers.

Re: The Plot Synopsis For Sonic Frontiers Has Been Revealed

Quarbit

I just don't see Sega ripping off Breath of the Wild for Sonic somehow working out to a good game. Not only is it a poor fit for Sonic, but Sega doesn't have the chops to make something with the scope and ambition of BOTW. The main problem here is Sonic doesn't have an identity in terms of gameplay mechanics and Sega is desperately throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. That never works out well.
