"developers who exploit vulnerabilities in video game consoles and design circumvention devices" And that'sssssss.......bad 🙄 Right up there with serial killer, for sure.
I don't find these angled/wing controllers comfortable or 'ergonomic' to hold for longer periods 🤔
Not much I can do about it since the design has been stuck for years, but I'd rather have straight edges. Let ME determine what angle my wrists are at, thanks, not forced into the angle of the controller mold.
It was a smart move of NoA not to release the original SMB2 (Lost Levels) outside of Japan. I think that would've been a real misstep for Mario's career.
Another half-assed Mario Kart spin-off tells me that Mario Kart 9 is even further away 🙁 It's been SIX YEARS. And over five years since the DLC. Sheesh 🙄
The book by Blake Harris was absolutely fascinating and gave a behind-the-scenes picture of what we all talked about at school at the time. I couldn't put it down.
We never called it a 'console war' at the time (well my friends didn't, and I don't remember any of the game magazines referring to it as such). If anything it was the 16-bit wars. I don't think the term "console" was generally used until a little later.
One of the High Score episodes (Sega) stole the book's thunder though, because they waited so damn long to turn this book into a series (though apart from a couple gems, that High Score series was a real disappointment).
Oh, and Seth Rogan's foreword in the Console Wars book was an embarrassing waste of ink 🙄
@Trajan - Both of my grandfathers died relatively early from lung cancer. They both smoked all the time. One gave it up in the later years but it was too late. As people have commented, it was the culture of the time and society condoned it (smoking in restaurants, airplanes, etc).
Japan's smoking laws are 20 years behind. It's gross going into a McDonald's in Japan and one whole floor is a dedicated smoking section (the restaurants are often small but multi-level). I don't know if the new laws have had an effect yet, but I hope so.
This is very fascinating. Not only the tilesets showing gradual development and rejected ideas, but the freakin C++ and assembly source code 😵
People forget how much of a jerk Nintendo was in the 90s. They wouldn't share any technical details/manuals with 3rd party developers - especially those outside Japan. Those developers had to figure out almost everything from scratch, with rarely any assistance from Nintendo.
If karma existed, this is what it looks like Nintendo 🙄
On the other hand, I don't agree with people going through game patches and leaking future updates/DLC.
It feels like the Switch has only just gotten started 😲 Nintendo's blundering lack of UI updates aside, it's a great platform that would benefit from many more years... but it definitely needs a hardware refresh.
Nintendo would be shooting itself in the foot if it started from scratch with a new console now.
Good article, thanks 👍 Nice to see something different than the usual writeups. My dad was never into video games or even board games. But I now play games with my daughter, who is a big fan of Roblox.
Things I learned from this lawyer: There is now a modchip called SX, and this lawyer is a bit dumb... "baldly" 😅 With this news, I might buy a Switch again and get it modded. Thanks Nintendo lawyer.
It's embarrassing to see 5-year-old MK8 advertised on YouTube/TV. C'mon Nintendo 🤦♂️ Unless you're dropping a major DLC or Mario Kart 9, then find something fresh to advertise.
The next Disney+? Give me a break 🙄 As much as I want Nintendo to succeed, this sounds like car salesman talk from a fraudster.
Either this 'investor' is BS'ing its stakeholders big time, or Nintendo are playing their cards really close and have some game-changing plans. But it doesn't seem to ring true. You'd expect Nintendo to be making such announcements to the public, not some investor.
All your base..... one of the first internet memes ever 🥺 I remember everyone spamming it on the Zophar.net emulator forums back in like 1997. It's been a long time.

Those clothing items look a bit dorky 😝 Surely they could've come up with something a bit trendier. Unless the items are meant to be for kids under 10 😅
When my daughter was around that age, I realized there is a big hole in the market for console-like games that suit 3-5 year olds. The two biggest problems I encountered:
1. The total lack of games that simply allow a kid to explore without having to fight enemies, or they get stuck early in a level because they need platforming skills to advance.
2. Too many games targeted at kids rely on text in order to play (GUI elements, narrative, etc). The child can't just play the game by themselves without a parent needing to read for them. Nintendo scored very poorly on this in my opinion. They're known as kid-friendly, but their insistence on using gobbledegook for all voice-overs in this day is frustrating. Plus your kid can only get so far before another text box pops up. I found my daughter just got frustrated with this type of game because she needed someone to read it for her every single time. An older person or parent isn't always going to be available.
Because of the reasons above, one my daughter's favourite games at that age turned out to be Goat Simulator 👍
If I remember right, there was an update that allowed you to turn off the cutscenes. The voice acting was great, but I think the problem was the way the cutscenes were integrated into the gameplay. The editing and empty space between dialogue needed to be tightened up. I enjoyed the game though. Wish they had the chance to remake DuckTales 2, which was just as good.
If Mario was ever 'cool', it was SMB3. From Super Mario World onwards, we've gotten dumbed-down cute SFX with no oompf, we've gotten Yoshi's stupid voice, that cringy WAH WAH instrument that accents all the music tracks, and so on.
Odyssey improved things a bit though and made Mario more family rather than "This game sounds like I'm in a goddamn childcare center".
"In more recent times, the service has rebranded itself under the name 'Street Kart' [...] Despite this, a new ruling has found the company guilty of property infringement once more."
Why? What was the second infringement for? This article doesn't actually explain.
When Reggie talks, I listen. To be fair, most logos need at least a little refreshing from time to time. But most of the time you can make your existing logo appear 'cool' with thoughtful marketing and modern video editing techniques.
That kid annoyed me so much... "CALIFORNIA.....CALIFORNIA derrrppp". Just shut the hell up. The kid has awesome video game skills and all he does is mope around whining. I wanted to take that stupid yellow lunchbox and shove it up his... 😅
I loved seeing all the video game stuff in this movie though, especially the SMB3 part 😲 What a treat back in those days.
I think it's a great idea for a commercial/something different. But if they're actually going for ASMR, it's a bit of a fail 🤔 30 minutes of tinny speaker sounds is not relaxing. They should've really dropped down the volume of the game and boosted the fireplace crackle. Maybe have some soft orchestral Nintendo tunes playing in the background.
Oh that's right, the japanese version of "curry": a plate full of gravy and rice with one bite-sized piece of meat. Two pieces if you're lucky 🙄 I love visiting Japan, but finding a meal with some actual beef in it is sure a mission 🤔
I always have time for Reggie. Current technology is not yet ready for most of us to genuinely enjoy cloud gaming. But I believe one day it will happen and will become the norm. Either that or engineers will finally figure out how to shrink high-end GPUs enough to fit into a phone.

Re: Review: Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix - A Massive Improvement On The Terrible Original
Mario Kart is 60fps, yet every other third party kart racer (to my knowledge) barely cracks 30fps. Nintendo must be hiding some programming tricks 🤔
Also, where TF is Sonic Racing Transformed? Surely that would run at 60fps on Switch.

@Not_Soos - I also really like the joycon colours. I thought you could buy them separately in Japan, like the Pikachu/Evee ones?
If so, I'm sure there's a site or mail forwarding service to get it to you... for a price. Cheaper than buying the whole console though.

The question is whether they can come up with something clever that won't get ruined by hollywood formulaic BS.
