Re: Random: Amazon's Luna Controller Sure Does Look Familiar

Prizm

I don't find these angled/wing controllers comfortable or 'ergonomic' to hold for longer periods 🤔

Not much I can do about it since the design has been stuck for years, but I'd rather have straight edges. Let ME determine what angle my wrists are at, thanks, not forced into the angle of the controller mold.

Re: Here's Your First Look At The Console Wars TV Series From Seth Rogan And Evan Goldberg

Prizm

The book by Blake Harris was absolutely fascinating and gave a behind-the-scenes picture of what we all talked about at school at the time. I couldn't put it down.

We never called it a 'console war' at the time (well my friends didn't, and I don't remember any of the game magazines referring to it as such). If anything it was the 16-bit wars. I don't think the term "console" was generally used until a little later.

One of the High Score episodes (Sega) stole the book's thunder though, because they waited so damn long to turn this book into a series (though apart from a couple gems, that High Score series was a real disappointment).

Oh, and Seth Rogan's foreword in the Console Wars book was an embarrassing waste of ink 🙄

Re: Random: Shigeru Miyamoto Used To Smoke In The Star Fox Office

Prizm

@Trajan - Both of my grandfathers died relatively early from lung cancer. They both smoked all the time. One gave it up in the later years but it was too late.
As people have commented, it was the culture of the time and society condoned it (smoking in restaurants, airplanes, etc).

Re: Classic Nintendo Source Code And Prototypes Leaked Online

Prizm

This is very fascinating. Not only the tilesets showing gradual development and rejected ideas, but the freakin C++ and assembly source code 😵

People forget how much of a jerk Nintendo was in the 90s. They wouldn't share any technical details/manuals with 3rd party developers - especially those outside Japan. Those developers had to figure out almost everything from scratch, with rarely any assistance from Nintendo.

If karma existed, this is what it looks like Nintendo 🙄

On the other hand, I don't agree with people going through game patches and leaking future updates/DLC.

Re: Mega Man's Live-Action Movie Still Happening, Expect Big News Soon

Prizm

@riki_sidekicks said "Mega Man’s “plot” and mechanics are great for a platformer but would make no sense in a movie."

I think you can make any game work on-screen if you really take the time to think up a story and plausible reasons for everything.

The question is whether they can come up with something clever that won't get ruined by hollywood formulaic BS.

Re: Nintendo Is The Next Disney+, Says Activist Investor Which Now Has A $1.1 Billion Stake

Prizm

The next Disney+? Give me a break 🙄 As much as I want Nintendo to succeed, this sounds like car salesman talk from a fraudster.

Either this 'investor' is BS'ing its stakeholders big time, or Nintendo are playing their cards really close and have some game-changing plans. But it doesn't seem to ring true. You'd expect Nintendo to be making such announcements to the public, not some investor.

Re: Feature: 6 Things My Three-Year-Old Taught Me About Video Games, Via Animal Crossing

When my daughter was around that age, I realized there is a big hole in the market for console-like games that suit 3-5 year olds. The two biggest problems I encountered:

1. The total lack of games that simply allow a kid to explore without having to fight enemies, or they get stuck early in a level because they need platforming skills to advance.

2. Too many games targeted at kids rely on text in order to play (GUI elements, narrative, etc). The child can't just play the game by themselves without a parent needing to read for them. Nintendo scored very poorly on this in my opinion. They're known as kid-friendly, but their insistence on using gobbledegook for all voice-overs in this day is frustrating. Plus your kid can only get so far before another text box pops up. I found my daughter just got frustrated with this type of game because she needed someone to read it for her every single time. An older person or parent isn't always going to be available.

Because of the reasons above, one my daughter's favourite games at that age turned out to be Goat Simulator 👍

Re: DuckTales: Remastered Returns To Digital Storefronts, Includes The Wii U eShop

Prizm

If I remember right, there was an update that allowed you to turn off the cutscenes. The voice acting was great, but I think the problem was the way the cutscenes were integrated into the gameplay. The editing and empty space between dialogue needed to be tightened up.
I enjoyed the game though. Wish they had the chance to remake DuckTales 2, which was just as good.

Re: Nintendo Has Worked To Escape Its 'Childish' Reputation, Says Miyamoto

Prizm

If Mario was ever 'cool', it was SMB3. From Super Mario World onwards, we've gotten dumbed-down cute SFX with no oompf, we've gotten Yoshi's stupid voice, that cringy WAH WAH instrument that accents all the music tracks, and so on.

Odyssey improved things a bit though and made Mario more family rather than "This game sounds like I'm in a goddamn childcare center".

Re: Check Out What's Inside The Wizard's 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Release

That kid annoyed me so much... "CALIFORNIA.....CALIFORNIA derrrppp". Just shut the hell up. The kid has awesome video game skills and all he does is mope around whining. I wanted to take that stupid yellow lunchbox and shove it up his... 😅

I loved seeing all the video game stuff in this movie though, especially the SMB3 part 😲 What a treat back in those days.
