Re: EarthBound YouTube Videos Keep Getting Flagged For Copyright By Sony

@Dr_Lugae said "It's because the album was made for Earthbound Beginnings/Mother 1. they may not have thought it'd have been an issue at the time."

Are you speculating, or is there some additional proof that Sony actually now owns the copyright and not Nintendo?

These companies are always strong-arming copyright claims on YouTube where they don't always have the rights or when its hard for the uploader to prove otherwise.

I've had to fight Sony before on a copyright claim that they had no right to. They tried to tell me that they owned the copyright for the christmas carol Silent Night written in the 1800s. And no, it wasn't a version released on a Sony record, it was just a homemade version. My appeal was successful.

I find it extremely hard to believe that Nintendo would actually hand over the music copyright of a game to Sony for good 🤔

I think they made a deal with Sony to distribute the CD soundtrack for a limited run only. Now Sony is going through their old library and uploading content IDs to YouTube and this soundtrack happened to be in the list.
I reckon it was done inadvertently, but at the same time they're not gonna review the actual copyright details unless Nintendo brings it up. They can just muscle YouTubers into submission until Nintendo bothers to investigate.

@harrystein said "Mario 3 is one of the most overrated piles of garbage."

This is an odd comment and would make more sense if you didn't experience it at the time?

So many features of SMB3 were cutting edge.. a world map to navigate and mini-games, tons of unique power ups, a huge amount of varied levels, including the 'giant' world 4. It set a huge benchmark for NES games.

AND they pulled it off the same year that SMB2 came out - SMB 3 was out in Japan 2 years before it was released internationally. Even if you don't like the gameplay, it is one of the most polished NES games by far.

@BFahey3 said "Mega Man 2 for me is superior to 3 for a few reasons"

MM2 is also my favourite for most of those reasons, but I think 3 was a more polished game. I mean, "Get equipped with item-1"? 😅
Rush was the perfect addition. But if I feel like playing, I still go back to 2.

Although I grew up in the era, I have to agree that there's only a handful of NES games that hold up well for replayability.

Here in Australia the NES didn't seem to have the impact as it did in the US and I think the popularity of the Commodore 64/Amiga had something to do with it. I suspect a similar situation in the UK?

Additionally, the PAL NES had that 50Hz slowdown. The slowdown also made SNES games in particular a sluggish mess. Thankfully I only really played those consoles in the US at the time.

@Azuris said _"And i also disliked many of the first 3D Games, clunky Controls, ugly Polygon Models without Details, morphing Graphics , bad Framerates...
I rather stayed with fine 16 Bit and PC Games."_

Totally agree. I went from 16-bit to PC games. Playstation looked and played like total garbage.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Metroidvania Games

Prizm

Ok, so basically any sidescroller that has a little more depth than a Mario game can be called Metroidvania 🙄

Since Metroid Dread is coming out, how about a list of games that are actually much more closer to the Metroid style? 🤔

There will be a couple double-ups from this list, but it would narrow it down much more for people who may not have played 2D Metroid before and would like a taste.

Re: Nintendo Says It's "Working Hard" On Metroid Prime 4

Prizm

I'm more excited for Dread than Prime, although Dread's graphic style looks a bit nasty and dated 😬

I tried Prime 1 back in the day. I had dropped out of consoles years earlier so I had a PC and was used to decent graphics. I thought Prime looked and played like crap, so that was that. Back to 2D Metroid for me. But we'll see how 4 turns out.

Re: Yes, The Samus Returns Team Helped Nintendo Develop Metroid Dread

Prizm

Never got to play Samus Returns because they released it on the friggin dying 3DS instead of Switch 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
Now it'll never come to Switch because of the dual screen gimmick.

  • I had the original Metroid II on Gameboy and loved it.
  • Super Metroid and Zero Mission were my favourite.
  • I remember thinking Fusion was alright, but way too linear.

Re: Rumour Buster: Has GameStop Just Revealed The 'New Nintendo Switch'? Probably Not

Prizm

@Kiz3000 said "Looking at that advert, "New" is capitalised twice and seems to hint at the name of the updated console."

At first I thought it was a typo, but I agree, that small print down the bottom definitely looks intentional:
"...traded towards purchase of New Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch Lite"
How could you make the same stupid mistake twice? Highly unlikely. And they're not calling the Lite a 'new' Nintendo Switch Lite either, or a "new" XBox Series X/S, so that reasoning doesn't hold water.

Lucky for GameStop, they were able to back out of this one due the ambiguity of the "New" name.

@Reaast said "Why should they give you 225 Bucks for a Nintendo Switch to buy a new "old" Nintendo Switch?"
You wouldn't, but you could be theoretically trading for an XBox (or Switch Lite).

@BloodNinja said "I competed a little bit here and there, and played for 15 years"

haha nice. Paranoia Respect was actually about the only Paranoia I liked playing (maybe a little Rebirth). I did a fair number of doubles songs on Expert/Heavy, but for Respect I did it on Difficult. Expert was just ridiculous 😅 Did you actually do it Expert without the bar?

I know most people used the bar, but I always thought it looked lame, so I only played songs that I could do without it. Some I enjoyed on doubles were AA (great for gliding around the pads), Can't Stop Fallin Speed Mix (those repeat notes are a killer when you're tired though), No 13, original Healing Vision, Jana Jana was a nice warm up and looked good. Always liked Still in My Heart Momo and Sakura on Challenge.

Re: Video: EarthBound's "Lost Secrets" Have Been Revealed Thanks To The Recovery Of Localisation Source Files

Prizm

@Azuris - Yep, it's highly likely they used a dedicated recovery program, which would've been a little more reliable and had a proper GUI, but it's basically doing the same thing underneath.

A few of those programs were around even back then (often running in Windows), but they weren't considered specialist software or anything, they were sold to the general public (and of course, pirated).

I just find it funny when police/companies etc make it sound like they had to use special machines or something, when usually it's just a recovery program. Though there's likely some more hardcore methods out there as well.

"In the case of Lindblom’s disk ... we were able to forensically recover all of the deleted EarthBound data"

Yeah, using such technical forensic tools like MS-DOS commands UNDELETE and UNFORMAT 😂

That would've been the first thing I'd try with someone else's formatted floppy disk back in the day. And it usually worked as long as you had barely written to the disk afterwards (or preferably hadn't written any files). I found a game or two and other old files. It saved my butt a couple times as well.

Re: What Are Your Favourite Switch Online SNES And NES Games? Nintendo Wants To Know

Prizm

"Nintendo is curious to know what your favourites releases are so far"

Umm.. no they're not. Did everyone's brains just switch off for a moment? 😅

It's just a PR rep on Twitter trying to maintain engagement with the Australian/NZ community. There's no official survey or interest in feedback.

It's no different to NintendoLife authors writing about a new game rumor and the last sentence says "What do you think about this rumor? Tell us in the comments below!" The author doesn't care, it's just to drum up engagement and repeat views (which is fair enough).
