Launching next week on Nintendo Switch is Goblin Sword, a pixel-art action-platformer that's set to bring another dose of classic retro vibes to our favourite hybrid console.
Complete with light RPG elements, the game sees an army of monsters led by an evil wizard invading your hometown. It's up to you to slay as many monsters as you can, collecting loot, avoiding dangerous traps, and defeating menacing bosses along the way. You can expect a fateful encounter with the evil wizard himself, too.
The game was originally released for iOS, but this new port includes "redrawn background graphics and some small gameplay changes". We're also told that it was inspired by classics like Castlevania and Mega Man X. Here's a quick feature list:
Features:
- 89 levels
- 13 bosses
- 30 weapons with unique special attacks
- 30 relics that grant you abilities
- 14 costumes
- 8 guardians that follow you around and assist you
- 5 secret very hard levels
- Decorate your home with souvenirs
Goblin Sword is set to launch on Thursday 13th February for $4.99 / £4.49 / €4.99. A 40% off launch sale will be available, however, bringing that price down to $2.99 / £2.69 / €2.99 for a limited time.

The pixel art looks beautiful!
The only good goblin, is a dead goblin.
£2.69?! Weirdly that's made me a little less excited as the trailer looked great so why so cheap?
Definitely giving this a go.
Edit: "originally released for iOS" - Oh ok, now I understand.
I'd like some actual castlevania please! Oh and it has to be called castlevania too but i suppose konami would have to sell the rights for that. One can only hope. Clearly they aren't interested unless it's a stupid mobile game.
This is one of VERY few games I enjoyed on mobile so I’m really stoked about it coming to Switch. It’s a fantastic game so don’t count it out just cause it started life on iOS, it’s really good!
I enjoyed it on my iPhone. Though I generally wait for a sale price on dressed up mobile games on Switch
Looks great, but really want a physical
@GhostGeneration I agree! One of the best iOS games and one of the best platform games I have played!
It's not a very long game in hours but it's very enjoyable with the right price.
@nkarafo Yeah, I didn't finish it cause I REALLY don't like playing games on my phone but I always kinda hoped it would come to Switch so I could fully enjoy it. Everything just feels RIGHT and it's just the right balance of fun vs. challenging too. People are gonna hate on it automatically cause of its mobile roots but that's a real bummer cause it's super sun and cheap as hell too!
looks good. Anyone know if there is a leveling up system? Like you gain xp?
Might give it a bash given how cheap it is but I don't feel it really looks like a true retro game in the way Shovel Knight and Blazing Chrome managed to
Hey, it looks fun! It reminds me a lot to Wonder/Monster Boy, which is good.
@GhostGeneration Yeah, that's right. I am considering buying it again, even I have already completed it !!
Honestly, at first I thought meh, but then I saw all the awesome animation and game play mechanics.
@komodo182 I legit don't remember, like I said above- I hate playing games on my phone so I put this down after a pretty short time. I'm just excited to find out now that it's coming to Switch!
Hey look it's another super generic game with pixel art to try to get fans of classic games to buy it. So many of these on the switch and whilst they may be cheap they are also usually fun for about ten minutes.
At $2.99 that is pretty much impulse if you are interested in the game.
I am in the middle of DQ 11, another Fire Emblem run and Bloodstained ROTN right now, but this game looks good, at $2.99 easy decision.
@komodo182 No, it doesn't have a level up. Only you buy new weapons / some skills.
one of my all time favorites IOS games
pro-tip: if there could be a secret passage, there IS a secret passage
@nkarafo
That's less exciting. It's listed as $6.29 in my location, so we will see what the sale brings it down to. At $2.99 I was going to buy it, but it will probably be like $4.49 which might be a no since most phone games I find pretty boring. We will see.
I don't expect transformation, but for whatever reason it is reminiscent of Monster Boy: Cursed Kingdom. With that 40% it is strongly beckoning me. Hopefully, there are some reviews up by launch. Looks interesting...
@GhostGeneration Thanks for the tip. I will definitely give this a go.
Just checked US eShop, no sale for launch, at least right now, so $4.99. Wonder if/when that sale starts.
Guess launch day
@Ooccoo_Jr No worries!
@jamesthemagi I'm hoping to have one up on my site in time for launch, I haven't heard back about snagging us a code but I did reach out so we'll see.
@GhostGeneration
Alright, thanks!
@Zeldafan79
Get the Castlevania compilation. It is well worth it even if it is only digital.
It has 89 levels for $4.99 US? I would like to see some reviews first although the artwork looks really good.
I hate mobile games. I hate platform games on mobile. I LOVED Goblin Sword on iOS. Great to see it appearing on Switch at a nice price. Hopefully sales will be good and a sequel will be planned.
Wow, if that trailer is to believed, that's a lot of content and varied gameplay for only $5. I'm dying to know what the catch is. This game looks great.
Wasn’t sure but this comment section sold me on it. Plus that’s a fine discounted price to just give it a shot either way.
Looks quite good, and especially for that price!
This looks like Day One.
And I didn't see the phrases "Metroidvania" or "rogue-like" anywhere! Looks right up my alley.
For $3, I’ll give it a go
It was really fun on iOS! I'm a bit worried though, that replacing virtual buttons with real ones will make the game a bit too easy.
Like others here, I loved this on iOS - and despite touchscreen virtual controls being a generally terrible fit for action platformers, I played Goblin Sword to completion. The levels are short, but you’ll be revisiting them multiple times to find the secrets. Not sure what it’ll be like on Switch, but it’s a short, sharp treat on mobile.
I laugh when you guys said it is Mega Man and Castlevania inspired when it had more in common with Wonder Boy. Seems like a good Sega Master System style game, may look forward to playing it soon.
@Kalmaro That saying reminded me of Caddyshack, Bill Murray talking about varmints..... 😂🤣
@Dm9982 Haha, I was thinking about Goblin Slayer when I saw the title.
All this for only $3-$6? Sounds too good to be true. The controls are probably awkward or something.
One of my favorite iOS games, glad to see it coming to switch for cheap
Looks like it has some really nice vibes. Price is a steal.
For the price this looks dope! And the title logo is 90% the dragon quest logo so bonus points for that
At that launch price, I'mma jump right on this game.
For that price, the game looks very appealing.
@Zidentia
Got it but the series is dead until somebody makes a new one. That really bites!
That reminds me of that old DOS game... what was it... Hocus Pocus.
@AnotherGoblin
Excited to get this. Would never have known about this game if it weren't for this article.
ATTENTION: I'm going to have a full review up on my site after launch, but since I played this on iOS AND have now played it on Switch (and confirmed there is no embargo of course) I can CONFIDENTLY tell you guys that you NEED this game on your Switch. It is one of the best pixel art/retro styled action platformers I've ever played.Tons of content, really responsive controls (they did a great job working them over for Switch, it feels amazing), secrets, upgrades, and it'll be launching (US) at a discount for $2.99.
If ANY part of you loves this kind of game you owe it to yourself to buy Goblin Sword. Plus, the levels are JUST the right length so you can get a little time in at lunch, on the toilet, whatever lol. I don't do scored reviews on TGG but I promise you that if I did I'd probably give this one the highest marks I could.
@DrDaisy Nope.
@Dualmask No catch my friend, it's f'ing brilliant.
@GhostGeneration You seem like the kind of person who will buy this as soon as it comes out. Will you share what you know when you do?
@DrDaisy Take a look 4 comments up.
I already have it cause I'm reviewing it and.....well, it's all up there lol!
@Zeldafan79
Ahh, ok.
@GhostGeneration What do the buttons do? Are B jump and Y attack?
@DrDaisy Y and A are attack, B is your jump, and X is your special. It’s honestly one of the smoothest simple control schemes I’ve come across in a long time.
The presentation looks pretty good, just like the description. Price is too good. I'm in. Let's hope it's not broken or something like that for such a little price
@GhostGeneration Thanks. That's all I needed to know. I'm not all that crazy about the protagonist, but that's just a tiny issue for me and I'll probably buy this as soon as it comes out.
@DrDaisy It's SO good, it honestly is. I was shocked at how good it was when I got it on my iPhone but they did a fantastic job bringing it to Switch and the 100% truth is that it might be one of the most fun platformers on the console. If you buy it on launch day it'll be $2.99 (US) which is a straight up steal.
@John_Deacon I give you a "not broken guarantee".
@GhostGeneration Then I'll get it on launch day when the discount is active!
@John_Deacon Awesome, you're gonna love it!
