Sega has kickstarted a new 'Sonic 2020' project which will see news relating to the speedy hog arrive on our digital doorstep on the 20th of every month this year.
Today's big news is the reveal of the project itself, but a nice selection of wallpapers, social media avatar icons and even a Twitter header have been shared on Sega's website, too. It would appear that this brand new page will also be updated each month, slowly transforming into a year-long Advent calendar of sorts with Sonic goodness plastered everywhere you look.
2020 looks set to be a relatively big year for Sonic, with events planned to be held throughout the year ahead of the series' 30th anniversary in 2021. And we can't forget the upcoming movie, of course.
Looking forward to seeing what's in store for Sonic and the gang? Let us know in the usual place.

Continuing the trend of announcements for announcements. Good job SEGA. Sonic Mania 2 would be nice.
@Anti-Matter yes if that answers your question. You can find more information when you read the article.
First month in and it's already a letdown. GG Sega!
Neato mosquito
Hopefully we'll get to see him rave dancing again.
Every month will be a new update for Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric Remastered. Glitches and programming intact for accuracy's sake.
I know there’s no chance at all of this, but I’d love to see a release of Knuckles Chaotix, either by itself or as part of a collection.
That 32X thing sure fizzled fast. Talk about going off half cocked!
I barely remember seeing them on shelves.
How about some new bloody games instead Sega ?
I would like to see a new 2D sonic this year. Hopefully sonic mania 2.
February 20th is a Thursday.
Nintendo Directs are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
New Sonic news is guaranteed for Feb 20th...
...guys, I think we may have found our general Direct date.
Sega never ceases to milk hedgehogs while so many of their beloved IPs continue to go untouched despite fan pleas. It's really soured me on Sonic over the past decade especially; Sega is nowhere near the videogame publisher they were when they were making consoles, mostly due to such a myopic focus on a single IP.
... what on EARTH (/Mobius) is going on with the stars/aliasing around the ring of the avatars?
Gah!!!
@Alpha-2002 Nintendo Directs normally happen during the first half of the month plus Nintendo could make us wait till March or April for a Direct
Hmmm, Sega gives away digital content for free while Nintendo charges you your imaginary gold coins for purchasing more expensive software. It seems that Sega still does while Nintendon't
Yacker is in one game, while The Chaotix are in at least six main games, gg SEGA.
Edit: Oops, forgot Sonic Forces was a main game.
Sonic Heroes 2 but less teams and polish the mechanics.
@MysteryCupofJoe
Always thought if there was a Heroes sequel you could trim it down to 3 Teams. Make each team however have their own unique objective in the main game and give them their own set of zones to go through, way too tedious to go through every level unchanged as every team until you hit the Chaotix.
Nice! This has me stoked!
@AtlanteanMan
And they don't even do it well.
Sonic lurches form one game and play style to another.
It's risible to consider that Sega was one of the pioneers of 3D gaming.
Yet they can't even deliver a consistent strong of their "mascot"
Maybe they should just retire sanic all together.
Like that will happen.
Or maybe just dismanteling Sonic Team, cause it's clear they are clueless.
If they can do something as good as Sonic Generations (360) then I'm happy. Also, Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Forget Sonic! Gimme some US Phantasy Star Online 2 news every month until it releases!
Yup, saved that Amy avatar, being that guy who always has an Amy avatar here. She is my favorite character and I love playing as her in the spin-off games. Looking forward to seeing what they have in store.
@Axlthered Yeah. I enjoyed it but it definitely needs a change. It was the best 3D Sonic game to represent the Genesis 2D games. I love the Adventure series but the Heroes game felt like a good transition from 2D to 3D. Just needs more polish.
Okay, SEGA, cool! So what d'you got for us this month? ...O-oh, that... That was it...? Okay, see you next month, when you talk about the movie and nothing else, I'm sure.
Where's Eggman?
I hope it's like this:
February 20: More DLCs for Team Sonic Racing.
March 20: Announce Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sega Ages release date.
April 20: Announce Sonic 3 and Knuckles as part of Sega Ages.
May 20: More Sonic contents for Smash Ultimate.
June 20: Sonic Adventure 3 announcement at E3 2020.
July 20: Announce the Sega Dreamcast Mini with Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 as part of two of many games that came with the plug and play.
August 20: Announce a remastered of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations for Switch.
September 20: Announce a Sonic Handheld Collection for Switch that includes Sonic GG, Sonic 2 GG, Sonic Chaos, Sonic's Triple Troubles, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2, Sonic Blast, Tails Sky Patrol, Tails Adventure, Sonic Spinball, Sonic Pocket Adventure, Sonic Advance 1, 2, 3, and Battle, Sonic Rivals 1 & 2, and Sonic Rush 1 & 2.
October 20: Announce the long awaited Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 3.
November 20: Announce a Sonic Mania sequel.
December 20: Announce Classic Sonic as a DLC echo fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
If Sonic Team is gonna make another 3D Sonic game, i’m hoping it’s either Sonic Adventure 3, or a 3D Sonic game that has the same level design as Unleashed or Generations. Oh and Team Sonic Racing DLC would be nice.
At this point, SEGA should probably just play it safe and keep making enhanced ports. I still want Golden Axe: The Duel and Revenge of Death Adder on platforms I actually own. I know those two games aren't directly related to Sonic, but this article isn't directly related to Nintendo.
this is terrible(self censored myself) news, we don't really say it much but we all know most sonic games are rushed and they split their dev teams before they finish projects.
Unless it's Sonic Mania 2 or a M2 port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I'd much rather see Sega focus a bit on other franchises such as Golden Axe, Shinobi, and god forbid we finally get a Shining Force that's actually a Shining Force game.
Who am I kidding though, we're just gonna get another uninspired cash-grab Sonic game where all you do is run down a tunnel and sometimes hit a button. I suppose I should be grateful that we're even getting a Streets of Rage sequel though, so there's always that. As a huge Sega fan though it always pains me to see them continue to push Sonic games when they have a huge library of amazing games that they could easily be using. No time for that though when you can churn out another yearly sonic game and make easy profit. Gotta go fast!
imma be honest here, as a long time sonic player, I do not want to see another 3d sonic game unless it has a chao garden involved. It's pretty bad when even sites like IGN make it a known public demand while sega pretends it never existed.. now then another Sonic Mania game please!! or better yet, FIX SONIC 06'!!
At this point, I'd be more excited for Dr.Robotnik in Smash than I would for a new Team Sonic developed Sonic game.
On 4/20, they'll announce a new character called Chronic The Hedgehog
Why not try a year of SEGA for once? You know, other games from this company that does not feature a blue, talking, chili-dog-eating, 90s-oneliners craking hedgehog with a big ego?
@retro_player_22 I'm pretty sure it's already known that Fighters Pass 2 is following the same format as Fighters Pass 1, so that means all 11 fighters will be completely unique and no echoes
@RareFan Buddy
Have you seen Sega these past two years
Sonic honestly feels like way less of a priority to them these days
They are perfectly content resurrecting Streets of Rage, Valkyria Chronicles, Shenmue and Panzeer Dragoon
And their Atlus branch makes bank for them with Persona and SMT
That's not even to mention Yakuza
I'm honestly surprised their pushing Sonic this hard again outside the movie they have no involvement in
@BlueBlur101
Sadly not enough. There has to be more output from them. A new Skies of Arcadia, a new Billy Hatcher maybe, a new Ristar or a remake of the old one. Sonic still out numbers all of the other SEGA games combined.
More Sonic games please! I don't play them, I only watch Arin Hanson play them and freak out about them
At the very least, we should get something on the Sonic 2 SEGA Ages release. Its been so long for just a MD game thats been rereleased a zillion times so whatever they have planned for it's goitta be special.
@Alpha-2002 Metal Sonic for Smash, then?
