The original Pokémon Mystery Dungeon spin-off games - Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team - are being remade for Nintendo Switch, today's Pokémon Direct has confirmed.
The new version of the game will be called Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and will be launching on the system on 6th March 2020. That's incredibly soon! Check out the initial trailer below.
That's not all, as The Pokémon Company also confirmed that a demo for the game would be available later today. If you're wanting to try it out before buying, this would be the perfect opportunity to do just that. Before you go, take a look at these adorable screenshots:

It's certainly not the worst announcement we could have gotten but ehhhhh I'll pass.
OK, fine.
This game was my childhood
I was thinking about the Mystery Dungeon games awhile back, and never had the chance to play them. So this makes me happy, will have to give the demo a try.
That's not horrible, was hoping for something new but red and blue were a lot of fun.
@Sunsy The Chocobo one on the eShop is excellent.
Do people not understand this is litteraly the best Pokemon mystery dungeon game? This was the best news of the day.
Yessssss I’m so happy I love this series and it’s so great to know that it’s not dead !
Miracles do come true. Thank you Nintendo
Everything is unfinished. Including the Direct.
Boring.... Pokémon doesn’t make me feel anything. Never played any games and never will.
Nice, I've been itching for more mystery dungeon.
I'm sure it'll be limited to the Pokémon originally featured in that game, but I'm fine with that. Asset development takes time, that's why the 3DS started with Gates to Infinity before we got Super Mystery Dungeon.
@Kalmaro what do Red & Blue have to do with the Mystery Dungeon games? 🤔
The only good news in that 20 minutes as far as I am concerned. Feeling a little smug about predicting this to be fair.
@patbacknitro18 you mispelled "Explorers of Sky"!
@Cyrax77 if you've never played any of the games, how can they have ever had a chance to make an impression on you? You kinda don't have a right to an opinion on the games at all if you've never played one and never will.
A lot of remakes lately from Nintendo. Kinda hope we will get some new games announced this year. I'm not gonna lie, I'm really sick of all the Nostalgia pandering lately in the gaming industry: Resident Evil, Final Fantasy VII, Pokémon Let's Go, Link's Awakening, Super Star Saga, Bowser's Inside Story, Crash Trilogy, Spyro Trilogy, Sonic Mania, MediEvil, Shadow of the Colossus...
Sure, those are all great games,s but can we get also new stuff? This is the reason I bought a new console, to play new games.
@NImH Well it's a remake of mystery dungeon red and blue team. They are adding more stuff though so I'm still hyped.
Wow, some actual good stuff here, shame it only took up 2 minutes and not the whole thing, but eh
I would've preferred a new Pokemon Ranger game, but I'm cool with Mystery Dungeon. Really digging the art style.
@Luigivaldo Unpopular opinion, I liked the story in gates more by sky had better gameplay.
Will be buying this...and both expansion packs for sword and shield
@Kalmaro ah. I misunderstood you as meaning the original 2 GB titles.
Looks great, sure the youngins will love it, any wait for them to try out the demo today!
@SwitchedOn_Games I was thinking about the Pokemon ones, but I'll make note of this one too.
@RupeeClock there were mega pokemon in it and lucario so no it is not limited.
Art style is great for the overall tone of the game! A nice surprise announcement to start off the Direct.
I've heard good things from the first game despite it's archic designs from fellow Mystery Dungeon fans.. seeing this being remade is a nice surprise. I suggest y'all give this a try.
I let out an audible “eww” when I saw the art style. Are folks really into that?
My kids were never fans of these games but I liked the announcement for:
New(ish) game
RELEASES in just 2 months
Demo TODAY
1 game, not 2
The rest of the Direct was pretty much the opposite of all of the above.
announce direct
I like the style but don't really need a remake of this game. I beat it back in the day. But I'll at least check out the the demo.
I wonder how many new Pokémon they're going to add? At the same time, there's nothing stopping them from removing some of the original Pokémon. Back in the day, they had every Pokémon but I doubt they're going to add the current full Pokédex to this deluxe version.
EDIT: Checked the eShop. This is full priced game. Also voucher compatible.
@Late I believe they said 200 or 200+
This looks absolutely gorgeous, and I've personally never played the Mystery Dungeon games so it's one to consider for me!
I can't wait to check out the demo! I have always been a huge Mystery Dungeon fan but never thought we'd get a remake. While personally I prefer the Pokemon Ranger spinoffs, I doubt we'll see those again since they were 3DS dependent I'm looking forward to this though, and I hope people who never got a chance to play the originals will try it!
@Cyrax77
Never played them and you know they don't make you feel anything? Right....
Wow, this looks good! I've been feeling pretty alienated from Pokemon lately with GameFreak and TPC's business practices, but this really hits me for that Pokemon need I've been having. Too bad March is such a crowded release month this year, though. I'll probably wait and buy it used.
@Conductor The Sword/Shield expansions were apparently adding 200+ Pokemon. @Late was talking about the Red/Blue Rescue Team remakes.
It's okay. Mystery Dungeon is easily the best Pokémon spinoff series in my opinion, but a new game would've been better. Or if they wanted to do a remake, then do a remake of the absolute best game in the series accoring to pretty much everyone who played it (including me), Explorers.
Best announcement of the Direct hands-down. I love the art-style, I'll definitely be trying out the demo and see if they can at least still make SOME quality Pokémon games! I'm actually excited!
@Krisi Maybe this is their way of gaging people's interest. If it sells beyond their expectations, maybe that'll pave the way for new entries.
Hopefully.
@KoekiieWoekiie
I haven't had time to look at the news proper, but hearing that it's a remake of a third generation game immediately brings to mind that the content will be limited, even if they add on top of it.
@Yosher Eagerly waiting for that demo
@Raccoonius The demo is up right now though!
@Raccoonius Oh my mistake! Thanks for the clarification
Nice that these are getting the remake treatment though I would had been fine with just a Diamond and Pearl remake.
@Yosher I actually just checked the eShop and got it downloading. When they said later today, I figured I'd jump into Let's GO Eevee and check later.
I haven't played the original but im intrigued. I'll definitely try out the demo to see what the game is like. Is it anything like sw/sh gameplay wise? Bare in mind, sword was my first Pokemon game ever so take it easy on me😊
@NintendoByNature Oh it's quite different from Sword/Shield. In the Mystery Dungeons games, you are the Pokemon. You assemble teams and explore dungeons. They're quite fun turn-based games actually.
I've never played mystery dungeon. Definitely grabbing one of these.
That's interesting that Mega Charizard is featured in the trailer since the mainline games have pushed mega evolution to the side.
I like the oil painting aesthetic a lot, it reminds me a lot of Okami (which I love)
I might have to play this
I had just about given up hope that we'd ever see another Pokemon Spinoff game that wasn't a mobile-gatcha. Sure, it's just a remake, but it's a start. I love the art style!
Not picking up Day 1, due to New Horizons coming out in the same month as this one is. definitely will get it this year though. I'll check out the demo.
I'll possibly pick this up at some point as I've been meaning to give the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series another try, but it's not a high priority for me right now.
I played and mostly enjoyed Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team back in the day, but some of its mechanics in the post-game prevented me from picking up later games. I do remember liking the plot.
Will buy day one, I love the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. Here's hoping they remake Gates to Infinity and the Explorers games too.
This was by far the best part of the Direct.
@Raccoonius i Watched some gameplay of the original and it almost reminded me a top down 2d zelda but with Pokemon. Does that sound about right?
Explorers of Sky is ridiculously expensive, so maybe there's a chance that will get a remake too? Either way I loved the original PMD games and now that I'm much better at them I'll likely get this.
Played the demo for a little bit. The quiz is back (yay) but you can also answer no at the end of it if you don't like the result and choose your Pokémon yourself.
They got rid of the standard move that you used by pressing A, instead it now auto selects one of your moves. Seems to take weaknesses into account too. It's weird.
You can also press L to auto explore. The Pokémon will move on their own until they encounter an enemy.
Well, this wasn't the (2006!) remake I was expecting, but it is looking promising and the art style so unique. Even though I prefer the story of Explorers, I hope we get a new story, for example
@Cyrax77 Then save your time and stop commenting on the topic...
@NintendoByNature Yeah that would be good way to describe them.
@SmaMan You Ain't Lyin'!! I never thought we'd see the day they would get back to a Poké spinoff that isn't mobile. It's a shame that it really has only been a port(Pokkén) and this remake but at least, so far, it seems thought has been put into it. I'm about to download the demo pronto.
This brings me a sliver of hope that we get a new Colosseum/XD game.
The graphics look like a 3DS game, but I bet it will still have the pricing of a Switch game.
I love remaster as long as it works then all the better going from 3DS to Switch that just helps bring more gamers to Switch. As to price I think I saw 59.99usd going rate. If lower I be surprised. Them releasing this soon isn't a surprised considering it was already on 3DS the move wouldn't be that hard to update to the Switch.
@RareFan
I understand your reasoning but I like remakes because it give those who missed out on older games a chance to play it on the new systems. Had it not been for remakes I would not have played many classic games like Kingdom Hearts, Mario Luigi series and Final Fantasy.
How will they remake a game that’s of two versions? Combine exclusive features?
@Lalivero
I've been saying the whole time that a new Stadium/Colosseum would be the solution to the apparent reasons behind Dexit. A game where they don't worry about a world map, story and other singleplayer trappings, and just focus on those great animations and models for battle.
Also, while it's apparently now on the table, new Pokemon Pinball, please.
@Raccoonius awesome! I'll download the demo tonight
@Don
The problem is not even that we get remakes, the problem is we get too many requests lately. From each company. For me, it is just way too much.
@SmaMan Haha, you're definitely referring to Stadium/Revolution. Colosseum/XD had their own story(ie Shadow Pokémon). You wouldn't be lying about a new Stadium-like game though, since that is revolved around battling.
Heck, since we're talking spinoffs full blown now, can we ever hope to get Pokémon Channel back? 😹😹😹
Never played this before so I may give it a try.
@SmaMan I like the way you think. Would absolutely love a new Colosseum or Pinball game for Switch. Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness are two of my favourite GameCube games, a definite Day One buy if they came back as either remakes or a brand new one.
Pinball would be greatly appreciated. My arthritis prevents me from playing my old Gameboy Color, so I've been missing out for quite awhile now.
@NINtendo242
Yes, I commenting so much.......
I enjoyed these games so I'm kind of intrigued here.
@HeroponRiki Well, having played the demo I can say for sure it looks much better than any 3DS game I've played. Plus, it's had a lot of TLC to deal with many of the poor design choices in the original, so gameplay feels better than Supers. Combo that with the fact that there's clearly new material in the game, and the original being expansive even by GBA / DS standards, I don't really see the issue.
This is right on time for me. Been waiting for shiren and have’t played the pokemon mystery dungeon games.
I've never been a fan of the mystery dungeon games so this announcement was meh for me
Yeah! They could've packed in explorers of the sky too...
Now this is something my kid is happy about. Pokemon is her most favorite franchise, so I'll pick this up for her.
I'll pass though. Its a good game, I'm just not overly fond of the dungeon crawler genre is all.
It looks very nice though! I'm digging the soft, Winnie the Pooh style.
@NImH
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team
This looks great to me! I had to skip over these as a kid because I just didn't have the money. It was between "another" Pokemon game or something from a different series like Fire Emblem or Advance Wars - so I picked the latter.
But I really look forward to playing this remake now!
I never really got round to playing a mystery dungeon game myself, so getting a remake of the first games sounds like a nice way to get into them (especially on that seems to focus on the first three gens).
I liked the first 2 Mystery Dungeon games (after that the story went downhill), but if this is purely a graphics update I'll pass.
I want more out of a "remake" than just updated graphics to justify playing it again.
Similarly, as much as I loved the original Link's Awakening, I was not interested in Switch "remake", because it was basically the exact same game with a newer graphics (arguably a worse art style).
I haven’t played much of the Mystery Dungeon games. I’ve only played Super Mystery Dungeon, and a demo to Gates To Infinity. But it’s nice that they’re remaking the first games on the Switch.
I’ll pick this one up. I love the art style, so i’m looking forward to it.
@DarkKirby I'll defend Super Mystery Dungeon. I know some people go on about how the original and Sky were much better but honestly I loved Super.
Sure the story can get a little bit weird but still.
I love that the series is not dead and they are FINALLY doing another non mobile Pokemon spin off game.
I finished the demo and I played the original red rescue team when I was a child and when I was a little older.
There are some QoL changes like the ability to switch the leader inside the dungeon. You now see the location of every enemy/ally/object/pokemon to help/objective in the minimap and not just what is in your filed of view + the ally.
The game stops just before the skarmory/diglett mission and for the moment I can't go where there used to be Friend Area (on of my favourite things of red rescue team).
Morever, you have more moves fron the start I think. And I couldn't figure out how to do a base attack that does not consume PPs. I remember it was quite important to save PPs for strong enemies.
Do you think they are going to remove the friend areas? Do you think they will add an option to disable some of the helps that have been added to this game?
got the demo and it was as boring as I can remember
Eh, not a fan of the visuals really, ima just play the original.
Anyone that has tries the demo knows how to use the base attack (the one that does not use pps)?
Never played or heard of this game before but it looks adorable and since me and the kiddo are bonding over Pokemon Sword I think I will be getting this for sure
Does anyone know the specific developer is working on this? is it Game Freak?
Can anyone tell me how did they get food for pikachu?
