Every month in Animal Crossing: New Horizons a selection of the game's 80 fish, 80 bugs and 40 sea creatures cycle in or out. The catchable creatures that make up your Critterpedia migrate based on the real-time seasons tied to your Switch's internal clock, so unless you mess with your console's clock and engage in some time-travelling shenanigans, Tuesday 31st May is the last day for some time that you'll be able to catch the fish and bugs listed below — unless you get lucky and visit a different season on one of Kapp'n's Island Boat Tours, that is.
The seasons in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are based on your choice of Northern or Southern hemisphere at the beginning of the game. Different fish and bugs coming and going every month, but wherever you are in the world you'll have the opportunity to catch everything at some point during a calendar year.
We have listed all the bugs, fish and sea creatures that will be leaving Animal Crossing: New Horizons in both hemispheres below. They are listed in Critterpedia order but click the column headers to reorder them to your liking.
In addition to the outgoing critters, we have also listed the incoming fish, bugs and sea creatures returning after a hiatus to each hemisphere this month.
If you're after more information on bugs, fish or sea creatures, check out our complete New Horizons fish guide, bug guide and sea creature guide. Each contains information regarding the exact location of all critters on your island along with when they're available. Don't forget to also check out our exhaustive Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide hub while you're at it.

Gotta get this game right away for the yellow perch and sturgeon fishing!
I've almost got all the Southern Hemisphere ones covered. Just missing a Nibble Fish and a Gar (which isn't listed here).
Need the stringfish and sea butterfly still
godamnit I'm missing most of them and our southern hemisphere list is HUGE
I keep getting the common ones. How do I get the rare ones?
You know, in other countries, they call football fish soccer fish. 🎣
I love this game. ❤️
I have to leave myself one bug and a few fish it would seem. Got a Switch lite coming next week so I can have my own island.
I had no idea the... world simulation??? Was this deep. Wow. Explains so much about why I cant find certain stuff. This guide is well timed. Also, that's really cool they cycle em. Dang. Yep, I'm a first timer.
Going to have to find a stringfish. Made a lot of money on those in New Leaf.
Good to know, thanks for the info
Stringfish is all I need from the North.
If you visit someone from another region do you get to catch their region fish/bugs?
I just need that Stringfish. Must search for them this evening
Already got them. That Stringfish took forever to find!
Need that string and sturgeon.
IDK if this tip is well known, but if you dig up the Manila Clams (from those holes with water spouting out on the beach), you can use them to "craft" bait.
It's especially useful as you can manually spawn (haha) fish in specific areas they only show up in, rather than running back and forth waiting.
It's how I managed to catch a Stringfish, despite any fish rarely ever showing up in my top-most waters.
Just caught my Stringfish last night and I've got it all now. Just gotta wait for the new crop
All i need is that goddamn stringfish
I'm good for March. Think you could post these checklists in the middle of each month, or maybe even at the beginning?
Thank you kindly for this. I'm largely trying to stay spoiler free for New Horizons, but this is perfect as the month comes to an end just to get those last few missing Critters.
Won't be getting my Switch until after April 1st. . .oh well, there's always next year. 🤷♀️
Oh cool so I already have everything on the list. Fish bait for the win.
I didn't realize that different parts of the world, had different bugs and fish available to them... why not just have the same for both hemispheres...?
Also, why does the So. Hemisphere seemingly have so many more creatures than us in North America?
Huh. Thanks for letting us know. Missing the stringfish, I think.
After using about 200 bait I'm convinced the stringfish doesn't live on my island. The sturgeon refuses to show up too.
Update: Caught the sturgeon
Update 2: Caught the stringfish too now
@Mrac use a nook ticket to fly to an island with a cliftop lake. Keep casting your line to scare other fish until the large shadow appears.you can do this method on your island but its far too big and you would need to run all over the place scaring fish.
The Southern Hemisphere has much cooler fishes and insects!
@ClaytThaGreat Because in the Southern Hemisphere they're heading into winter. We're heading into summer. Early to mid spring more bugs show up, mid to late fall bugs are disappearing. All bugs and fish are available everywhere, just different times of year, we'll have the bugs the southern hemisphere is losing in a few months.
Now, to ask the real questions: how much does Tom Nook charge for those masks seen in the screenshots?
My kingdom for an Arowana!
@Kidfunkadelic83 That's a good tip. Thanks!
Still can't find a sturgeon...
Darn. Emperor Butterflies are a major source of income for me. lol
I have caught all but two, I better find the sturgeon and stringfiish.
Man, catching sharks will never not be satisfying.
@MasterJay You shouldn't have any trouble at all getting the sea butterfly. Those things are everywhere. I'm actually shocked you haven't caught one yet. Just fish for the smallest shadows in the sea. You should be able to catch like...20 of them in 30 minutes.
@MARl0 Actually, I realized I had after posting. For some reason I was thinking there was some butterfly that was only found on beaches, before remembering the one in the water I had gotten countless amounts of...
@MasterJay Ha ha, it happens. I thought it didn't sound realistic that you hadn't caught one. XD
I have all of these except the Stringfish. Gonna try to get it tonight.
@RPGamer Well, slight urgency as some of them you won't find for months and months again....
....for those not cheating of course.
@Quarth Wait till summer.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Ah, are we getting the more tropical animals then?
@Quarth Typically the summer is the best period for bugs and fish in the other AC games, so I assume it'll be like that for us Northern Island folk.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Let's hope so!
menage to get the final one (Stringfish) today!
btw will there also be a list of new critters that enter in April?
@Retron I think it's a mistake. I've been looking for it forever. And a wiki page says the Great Purple Emperor is only available 'til February. The Emperor butterfly, on the other hand, will leave Southern Hemisphere, too, and is missing from this list. I think they mistook it.
hive mind - from an A/C newbie....
Will all the fish / bugs cycle through the Northern hemisphere?? I've never seen a piranha in European waters!! or do we have to share friend codes with people 'down under'?
Thanks lovely NL peeps
Just got the stringfish and the sturgeon at last with less than two hours to go!.
Shame Nooks is closed to sell all the extra fish though
in southern there is a fish called gar, you can encounter him in ponds he appears from 4 pm to 8 am
Well luck be on my side so far. For Wasp I found the best way if your not holding the bug net is to stand infront of the tree or cedar and shake it and sometimes when the wasp comes out your avatar shows surprise and then turns towards the wasp and hit A fast and you'll catch them every time. But this is assuming your facing the tree when doing this. This has worked 4 times for me now and is the most efficient means to catch the Wasp to sell they are a whopping 2500 each. So catch them to sell is a better then getting stung and loosing the Wasp.
https://www.ign.com/wikis/animal-crossing-new-horizons/How_to_Catch_Wasps_(The_Fastest_Way)
1. Make sure you have your bug net in hand before shaking the tree
2. Approach the tree from the front, then shake it
3. When the wasp nest falls out of the tree, your character will automatically turn and face the wasps
4. As soon as your character recovers from shock, DO NOT MOVE, and hit "A."
5. You'll perfectly catch the wasp.

@wariosmith Yep all the bugs cycle, so throughout one calendar year you'll have the chance to catch everything at some point.
I've updated this with all the critters leaving at the end of April. Plenty of time left, so it should be a bit more relaxed than the mad rush to bag a stringfish in March
@dartmonkey thanks!!
Now.... a friend let his youngest try A/C first, not knowing the ‘one island’ rule.... now that child’s character is the resident representative and as he’s got quickly bored (too young) he’s not playing, therefore holding others back - before I get really grumpy about the fact that only ‘player 1’ gets the full joy of the game (naming island / opening challenges) surely they haven’t been daft enough to lock this down aswell?????
I caught a black bass and a blue marlin and it made me think of the NES game "Black Bass with Blue Marlin" for some reason.
Yeah I realize that had nothing to do with anything.
@wariosmith Yep, unfortunately you can't change who the resident representative is. The only way is to completely delete the island and start again totally fresh. Not ideal
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/03/faq_animal_crossing_new_horizons_island_name_advice_-_why_cant_you_rename_your_animal_crossing_island#how-to-delete-your-animal-crossing-new-horizons-island-and-start-over
@dartmonkey surely an error on Nintendo part??? Can you all feedback that this is causing massive family fall out across the world!!!
@wariosmith Ha, I'm currently putting together something with ideas for potential improvements. That's on there
You really need to work on getting those pictures... I play the game in Spanish and it so happens the rarest critters are the ones without pics so with the name alone I can't identify them...
Thanks for this guide, it's nice, clean and useful. Luckily I've managed to catch this month's critters already, looking forward to the extra bugs next month.
very useful guide
Thanks for making this guide! I want to get a Switch so bad now
Add the missing images please! Identifying these in another language is hard sometimes...
Wait what?! I have never even seen at least a third of these! You're telling me I have played every single day for 1-5 hours each day this month and missed THAT MUCH?!
WAIT! I'm an idiot, a bunch of those are southern hemisphere. Derp.
Any tips on catching a Blue Marlin gratefully received!
Could you post this a little bit earlier next time Nlife? When I read this, it’s 3 hours until may
@farmer_humpf use fish bait, makes it much easier
I'll have to give one more shot at least for the tuna, looks like I'll be clam hunting too.
@cooldude99 It was updated for April at the start of the month - we just put out a reminder a couple of times in the last week or so. It's updated for May now
Wow, seems like the Northern Hemisphere is definitely more lucky than the other half of the world. Looks like a truck load of stuff is disappearing over there...
Took a long time to get that golden trout
Wow, I already got almost every bug on the first day. Just need the Rainbow Stag. Still need a lot of fish though.
Hey, Piranhas are a river fish, not pond! I realized after an hour that it wasn't checking out, lol
@nintendoknife this doesn't have to do anything with the game but I just wanted to say that I like the username
There are an awful lot of bugs (many rare) locked to these 2 months...
I am genuinely missing a few of those that leave this month and have zero idea how to get them 😑
This'll be the first month I don't have all the critters, I'm missing six! The beetles are way too rare, and I'm not going to spend hours running in circles around the island in the middle of the night just so I might get a sliver of a chance at finding them. This is ridiculous.
time for a new fishing rod and bug catcher then
Is that a Star Trek: The Next Generation command uniform you're wearing in the second screen shot?!
Are the salmon gone? All ive been catching is salmon for the past week on rivers
@dux
hooda
I like tasty bugs
Felt like a photo finish but I got the Great Trevally at the peir.
at least after the update you won't need to rush to get these fish, bugs, and sea creatures thanks to good old Kapp'n
