The day has finally dawned when Miiverse—Nintendo’s ill-fated attempt at a social network—is seeing its end. Miiverse was an integral part of the Wii U experience, and though the sluggish console OS discouraged heavy usage of it, the network still played a significant role in many games, like Splatoon and Super Mario Maker. These games will still continue to be playable, but now that the service is getting the axe, users will be interacting with them in a different way.
A new update just went out for Super Mario Maker (and its 3DS equivalent), which closes down the comments function for good, while also adding in a series of bug fixes. Here’s the list of changes made:
Super Mario Maker:
– Accompanying the ending of the Miiverse service, new comments can no longer be added and existing comments can no longer be viewed on uploaded courses. Courses can still be uploaded, played, and evaluated. – A number of issues have been fixed to make for a pleasant playing experience.
Super Mario Maker 3DS:
-A number of issues have been fixed to make for a pleasant playing experience.

Would love Mario Maker 2 on Switch.
RIP Miiverse.
And still no slopes...
IT BEGINS.
I made some good friends through SMM Miiverse. I’m glad it at least existed for a short time.
RIP Miiverse and those annoying comments on the Mario Maker levels that would keep getting in the way.
Now give me a Mario Maker 2.0 with more enemies, items, themes, slopes, placeable lava and water pools and so on. SMM is the most fun I ever had in 2D Mario.
today i mourn for tomorrow we unleash heck upon the world for losing miiverse
Mario Maker just isn't quite the same without the comments. Hopefully they have one for the Switch in the works.
I’m glad they at least cleaned it up with a patch instead of leaving it hollow and incomplete.
How about adding 4 player co-op for the Switch version, like adding new super Mario Bros Wii u to the tilesets you can choose from
@justin233 I thought about this before, but honestly, how could this work on the switch without two screens? It seems to take the joy of out it to use a controller.
Goodbye, Miiverse.
Please Mario Maker 2 with Cappy and Capture as the features.
Saw the thumbnail.....got excited.
Is that what they call clickbait ?
The greatest loss is those comments. Some Mario Marker levels were built around naritives that used them heavily for flavor, or even puzzle solving.
This service has been discontinued. Thank you for using this service.
Good night, Miiverse. Rest well.
@thesilverbrick Strange how they did this for Mario Maker but not the systems themselves.
@Masurao @KingdomHeartsFan You can't compare a phenomenon like the Wii to the failed Wii U. And I say this as someone who still likes and uses the system.
I started reading this site and keeping up on Nintendo news at the release of the Wii U. It was such an exciting time and Miiverse was a super exciting part of that. Despite not actually using it that much it's pretty sad to see it go and it's the final nail in the coffin to a somewhat disappointing, but still fun era
@KingdomHeartsFan Well the Wii online gaming capabilities shut down about a year and a half into the Wii U's lifetime, so if they shut down game servers next year it wouldn't be too surprising. Also the Wii shop is still up so your eshop purchases will probably be safe for quite a while
@Klunk23 In all fairness the online features of the Wii being shut down was down to the purchase of Gamespy by Glu mobile rather than anything to do with Nintendo specifically. Anybody who soft modded their Wii was able to continue to play games online like Mario Kart and Smashed Brothers by using an alternative service.
Hopefully they patch other past games that used it too.
On a side note, at 5:59 I managed to squeeze on the Lyrics to Sinatras "My Way" on miiverse and just get a yeah before the 401 error came up and they had flipped the switch.
Nice to see that the Plaza has all the mii's final comments with them so it doesn't seem so empty. I really was expecting the default messages on the screen. Some will seem weird in the next few weeks when they are still saying "Happy Halloween", etc. But at least we still have the most popular games still up with there final comments. Splat on, Mario Maker, etc.
With Miiverse gone, how am I going to get an extra 30 platinum coins every week?
Also confirming that Xenoblade Chronicles X's Free Report system will no longer work as it relies on Miiverse being up. Well, there goes the Free Report-related achievements and the 100% achievements achievement, "Achievement King", for anyone who wants it (there's no reward except for the achievement, BTW)
Here's what happens now:
Last actual post upped 15min. before shutdown

My last Free Report posted (cut off text: 1AM EST 11-8-2017)

Tried for one more after shutdown...

It sucks that services that relied on volatile back end systems means that the full support of a game is only as fleeting as the developer's interest to keep those systems running. I'd really like to know how much pared back support would really cost to maintain. Blizzard probably knows best with all their legacy games still running online multiplayer servers 20 years after those games came out. Oh, well.
R.I.P. Miiverse
@Raptor78 That's true. On top of that, Nintendo began to dip into game genres that absolutely required online (Splatoon and Mario Maker), so I suspect that they'll work to keep online up for quite a while. Splatoon is still fairly active so as long as these games stay populated, I can see them keeping servers up for quite a while
@Klunk23 Yeah and hopefully by the time the fade out the servers it will be straight forward to mod the games to use alternatives. In all fairness, until Switch gets it own Smash Bros, I think the wiiu online servers will be pretty safe.
@Raptor78 Hopefully. Jailbreaking and modding often get a bad rep, but in this digital age they may be the only way some of these gameplay experiences can be preserved for the future
It's Nintendo's service so they're free to do as they like, obvs, but I think it really sucks that they just pull Miiverse without offering any detailed explanation or idea as to whether we'll ever see it or something similar again.
I loved you, Miiverse, even if my sucky drawings didn't show it. Near, far, wherever you are, you are here in my heart, and my heart will go on... 💔
I recently played Mario Maker recently and wondered why I stopped. Chose a 100 Mario challenge and got hit with a long level with no power ups, filled with instant death traps, time limit and lots of pixel perfect jump requirements.
I REMEMBER NOW!!
It was a good tool but the obsession with novelty levels and super challenging ones just alienated players like me who just wanted some casual fun on this game.
@thesilverbrick TBH if it weren't for the patch, I'm pretty sure that this game would litterally be dead now, because all of the levels posted were passing through Miiverse. Which means without the patch there would have been no levels no more, just like in Mario VS Donkey Kong Tipping Stars or Pushmo for instance
I'm more upset I never tried any glitched levels.
Very embarrassing that one of the biggest video game companies isn't able to bring a new comment function for a game that is only 2 years old. Shame!
@WiiUSwitcher Switch does have a touchscreen so you could still design levels.
@thesilverbrick: We really lowered our expectations here, didn't we? Super Mario Maker is just 2 years old! And the game is time-less in its structure. Regardless, Nintendo doesn't offer us any comment function what so ever. It is really a poor move, here.
I am bummed to see Miiverse go away. But I haven't used it or my Wii U, since March 2nd.
I would love to see a Mario Maker 2 or Mario Maker Deluxe on Switch. There are still plenty of things they could add to a new entry in this series. They could even release a new version and then release entire 2D Mario games as DLC or additional content on a Switch version.
Wow, what a update!
Damn, got all excited thinking it was news about a Switch version. :s
RIP Miiverse, it was interesting but I couldn't be bothered to load into it with the sluggish Wii U, but I enjoyed its game integration more in SM3DW for instance.
@Honelith: Miiverse could have been improved and used on Switch. Okay, maybe it was too expensive for Nintendo and I understand it. But the implementation in WiiU games was just great. The Plaza when starting the WiiU was nice, the messages in games was a social interaction one normally doesn't have in single player game and, finally, the live comments in Super Mario Maker levels were perfect. A lot of levels were also built on this feature by using quiz questions, giving hints or jokes. I really liked it!
Therefore, pulling the plug on Miiverse is too early but ripping Super Mario Maker apart is a slap in the face of every Mario Maker fan.
Why in the world does everyone think it is practical to port Super Mario Maker to the Nintendo Switch? Think about it! Both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are dual-screened consoles, but the Nintendo Switch is not, and the game heavily relies on there having two screens for efficient level design. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch's capacitive touch screen makes it even more frustrating to design levels, as you will be obliged to used your fingers, or be obliged to purchase a third-party stylus for capacitive touch screens. Many people already did so to make better drawings on Splatoon 2.
@HopeNForever You don't need the dual screen for Mario Maker. Seriously, I never saw the second screen of the game since I play the game only on the WiiU GamePad. However, the other points you mentioned are totally valid. I agree. Mario Maker would only work as a handheld only game when it comes to creating levels. Then not having a resistive touchscreen and stylus is a big disadvantage for the game.
Nevertheless, there is no alternative. Nintendo trimmed Super Mario Maker now and doesn't give any functional updates anymore. There is no other way than bringing the game to Switch. Such a nice concept must not die.
One of the big problems with modern gaming as I see it: Things aren't really permanent anymore and can basically disappear at any time, even when you've paid your hard earned money and purchased a physical version of a game that you really should own in its entirety for ever. It worries me that this is where gaming is going.
It is one of the most revolutionary games. All level design handed out to the people.
It created multiple full fledged platformers almost daily. I cans ee this concept return in bigger forms over the years - crowdsourcing entire worlds.
There was an issue with findability of the full game sets that makes people unaware of this potential, but still... at some point, it's coming
@Joeynator3000 water tile alone would add endless possibilities to level creation.
Should it happen, how's not having a second screen such a problem with regards to Mario Maker on the Switch?
I find that I'm looking at the WiiU gamepad, not the tv when I'm building levels. I'd assume it would be the same if Mario Maker was put on the Switch.
@masterLEON man... those Xenoblade screens make me really want to play it ...
lets just hope a version of super mario maker gets released on the Nintendo switch.
@Anti-Matter I would rather see them add power-ups that were missing in Mario Maker such as the Hammer Bros Suit, Frog Suit, Ice Flower, etc.
How would Cappy even work in a 2D Mario game anyway?
What about all the other games? 3d world, and countless others?
Welp, time to roll out the sequel!
So no courses with a story?
That's a really terrible solution. Many creators (including me) used comments (which are displayed in the levels) to add a story to the levels.
@NintenNinja16 You could just disable the comments (but then you miss all the story elements if there were any).
Pretty sad really, it was useful to read comments or have them displayed while playing, but I guess we're all too busy playing Odyssey to notice this downgrade
@shani Sadly, this is true. Super Mario Maker without a comment function is less functional...
Hats off...
@FX102A Choose the Easy or Normal modes.
I literally threw money down the drain with both Splatoon and Mario Maker. I know they are great, but I got them both at a time that I was kind of bored of my Wii U.
I should have kept them sealed at least, for collection value.
Splatoon 2 on the other hand, I'm addicted.
@FX102A I'm sad it's gone, but, glad I had the chance to record the 13,000 some levels while it was still a thing, not to mention the 800 some videos I recorded and haven't named or uploaded yet that each had tons of miiverse comments in them. I recorded every story or commentary level or series I could find, and finished up Goomba Story (airing in December). Just this past week or so I recorded all the most starred 100 levels of all time (as they get a lot of comments) for All, Theme, Gimmick, Costume, Traditional, and made my way halfway through Automatic when the servers shut down for the update. I feel like I recorded a good amount while I could and got just about everything I wanted to get that I could think of. It's going to be great to have those videos to pad out the channel, but, I fear that the ones without them, it's going to seem a bit lifeless and dull in comparison.
I hope Nintendo does something similar through Nintendo account. I never want to upload gameplay or screenshots onto my social media, but I did regularly on Miiverse. It was a great way to find tips and get help without having to leave your console. For me it also made me feel like I was constantly part of a multiplayer game even in single player games. Like for wind waker I would regularly post things like tingle statue hints or funny photos with the pictograph, it was great! It could be even better on the switch with a much faster os and the video/snapshot function so easily accessible.
Hmm. I am nervous for the day all of my Mario Maker courses are lost, except on my console. I’d like to think that the servers would be maintained for a while, but as I type this I’m looking at a copy of Pokémon Black 2 that I got after online service stopped. So... Here’s hoping? Also, why isn’t Mario Maker on the Switch? I want to port my stuff over, and I want to be able to connect to the 3DS game so that it can serve as something better than a portable sketch pad.
DO NOT UPDATE Super Mario Maker! It fixes awesome cool glitches
Why haven't they made slopes, colured tubes and ice power yet!!!
