Re: Square Enix Is Potentially Looking To Sell Stakes In Its Studios

NotSoCryptic

@SwitchForce
"more cryptic talk but believe what one wants but they didn't allow S-E to publish any FF series to Switch "

Not a single lick of truth to that, out side of the original FF7. Which had its publication rights re-negotiated as part of the deal for FF7 Remake exclusivity. Which btw sony paid for.

If a Square Enix game doesn't release on Switch it's because one three reasons:

1) Nintendo didn't pony up the cash to pay for development. They didn't think it was worth while to negotiate the project.

2) Square didn't think there was a market on the Switch for that game. This isn't something that is a Switch problem, plenty of Square games do not make it to PS4/5 or Xbox. They don't see the value in doing the port as a result. how many years has Octopath Traveler been out and I still can't get that on PlayStation? Where is the Pixel Remasters? Why is Square's Second Biggest franchise still having a hell of a time getting Dragon Quest X on PlayStation and Xbox? Man I'd love to play Live A Live on my PlayStation instead of my Switch, when will that happen?

3) Most certainly not the least of the three, the damn game just wouldn't run on the platform. Why do you think switch go the pocket edition of FF15 and not the full game. It just wouldn't run on the system. hell it barely runs on the Steam Deck. I'm willing to bet FF7 R would have the same issue. Don't even get me started on Nier Automata, absolute lunacy trying to get that game going on Switch.

Nothing you say will change that. What you suggest is against the law in several regions. So good luck with all your tap dancing. Sony isnt a monster here, its just business, you need to realize that.

Re: Square Enix Is Potentially Looking To Sell Stakes In Its Studios

NotSoCryptic

@SwitchForce That's a hot take. There was nothing forced about their partnership with sony over the last 25+ years. Nintendo didn't back Square when they said they needed CD technology on the N64, so they took their toys to the one company with the right hardware who was looking to help with publishing. Sony said FF7 and I believe 3 or 4 titles under their publishing deal. Wasn't long after that they were partnered with EA, Square EA and EA Square was fruitfull for a time. It was sony that helped them publish their films, they didn't need to go to sony and they werent bullied by Sony to do so. When Square needed funding for their projects, they entered publishing deals with sony. Square could have just as easily done it on their own, but they aren't without blame for their current position. Constantly making one bad decision after another, over burdening the Final Fantasy franchise to keep them afloat, instead of exploring their many IP and bringing Dragon Quest up to par. That isn't even getting into their many other poorly advised decisions, like Driving Emotion Type S, The Bouncer, Their exclusive releases on the Xbox 360 (no bullying there from sony), and the plathora of cheap cashins. If you want to talk about bullies, you need not look further than the Nintendo prior to 2002.

the only soured Square / Sony relationship was the one between Ken Kutaragi and Hironubo Sakaguchi. Two men who aren't even a part of the conversation anymore.

Re: Square Enix Is Potentially Looking To Sell Stakes In Its Studios

@retroman64 Censorship problem seems to float from company to company. User base just needs to keep making a stink so they stop censoring and start utilizing the rating system as it was intended. Remember Nintendo use to have the same problem and not just during the NES/SNES eras.

Sony I'd rather buy them out in full, but if I had to choose who would have stakes in the company, Sony and Nintendo would be it. Strangely EA, to help publishing of titles. I would not be surprised if external groups will invest as well.

Re: Capcom's Mega Man Series Has Now Sold 38 Million Units Worldwide

NotSoCryptic

Only 38 Million? kind of sad when you think about it. How many Mega Man games are there? 11 Main line? 8 X series? The GB/GBC variants? The Battle network games is like what 3 or 4 titles? the GBA MMX Zero games.... 3 of those maybe? The 3D megaman titles was like 3 of those? I'm sure I'm leaving something out, but it means most of these games sold less than a million units.

Keep in mind that titles like Horizon Zero Dawn managed 20 million, with 17 million of that just on PS4 alone. Safe to say Horizon Forbiden West will do similar numbers and easily dwarf the entire life time sales of mega man in just 2 games. That isn't even getting into a single title like Mario Kart 8 or Breath of the Wild (spits).

Re: Rumour: Roller Champions Could Be Canned After Just One Month On Switch

NotSoCryptic

@jowe_gw Contrary to popular belief they've been doing pretty badly for a while. they've been riding on the good will of players for about a 5 or 6 years and in 2019 it started to catch up with them. People are rejecting their IP like The Division 2, watch dogs 3, Outbreak/Quarantine, and others. Much of their IP is regurgitated trash like XDefiant. This whole movement to make "UBISOFT" an on box brand is really more delusional that beneficial. I don't think they even realize it. This has been a long time coming, they've been warned, hounded about it from staff and consumers. Every time they talk about how their data collection suggestion otherwise.

So personally I hope they burn themselves to the ground. They are a trash company with trash leadership. Nepotism is finally catching up and none of the fantastic tech they've thrown together will save themselves.

Re: Soapbox: Games Go Down Better When Paired With Books, Movies, And TV, Just Like Wine

NotSoCryptic

"But here's something I do know about: Video games."

Your thesis underminds this statement. If you can't do it with just that medium, then you're doing it wrong. Part of the reason many have trouble digesting Halo, is because its dispersed across media that no one has the time or the interest in investing time in. If you want to make books, then just make books. This doesn't just apply to games, every bit of media has this problem. It creates a disjointed experience. Which is why the cross media intiatives tend to fall apart almost as soon as they start. Look at the wasteland of such products.

I get what you're saying to some small degree. Often is the case like with gears of war which was far better after reading its collection of books, shows something very broken about gears of war as a game. It means the game is incomplete. The game is not finished. That the game did a very poor job of conveying its story and world to the player. What the hell is the point of having a medium that lets you show, speak to, and allow the player to interact with a world, if it requires a 400+ page light novel to explain all the things the game could do in 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 or even 1000 hours.

I don't want to invest in a book series I'll never read. I don'tt want to watch square enix's stupid movie that is meant to substitue the first 20 hours of the damned game. I'm looking at you Final Fantasy XV, literally ruined the start of that game with the BS they pulled.

So no. Look at the waste land of crap product. This isn't an enhancer, its a means of exploiting for more cash there George Lucas.

Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime Remaster Apparently Lined Up For November, Prime 2 And 3 To Follow

NotSoCryptic

@Andy77mk
1) We don't know if these are remasters, remakes, or reimaginings. Says Remaster in the rumor, but not the first time even in the last month that this detail was mixed up before it was straightented out. See Crisis Core, it's a remake, not a remaster, people are freaking out that its a reimagining, because of not a remake, reimagining, or remaster Final Fantasy VII Remake.

2) We don't know the price or how these games will be released. Quite possible they'll sell all 3 in individual packages of 30 dollars a piece. Still more than in a package for all three.

3) At least one of the games needs to be retooled. Probably why they opted for individual releases.

Re: SEGA Announces The Mega Drive Mini 2, Boasting 50 Genesis And Mega CD Games

NotSoCryptic

@KingMike I'd assume burn every copy on the planet and destroy the source code before letting ubisoft touch anything else ever again.

XSeed did a fair job on PSP, but I'd have preferred the Saturn/PSX version myself for a few reasons.

It's hard to say where verything lands these days. In the case of Sega CD, that falls flatly on Working Designs for legal discussion. I personally got tired of waiting for it to come to PSN and just ultimately hacked my Vita and now my Steam Deck to play the PS1 version of both games.

I do agree that having both Lunar games would have been a great addition, I'm sure there are plenty with memories of EGM, Game Pro, and many other magazines who were curious as to what they were missing from that heavily advertised Sega CD game. almost bought a Sega CD myself because of those ads, the lack of a genesis being the only thing that stopped me. thankfully PSX got it a few years later in a remade form. If that game made it to SNES with the Super CD, day one buy for sure. Irony to all of this is I now own a Genesis that I've modded with a triple bypass and I'm looking to get a Sega CD at some point lol.

Re: Chris Pratt On Voicing Mario: Says It's "Unlike Anything You've Heard In The Mario World"

NotSoCryptic

@NintendoByNature Don't be rediculous. You don't have feelings, you're a bot on the internet. lol

If you seriously do not know, there is considerable research on how your weight impacts your voice and how you speak. You can actually sound obese. As the weight gain can impact hormone levels of estrigeon and testosterine in men and women respectively. So basically if you're male and your voice will get higher and female your voice will get lower. The extra weight that generates around the throat and mouth also impacts speach and can cause sluring or tonel differences in how words are pronounced.

There is science. Though if you ever listened to someone speak who is obese you can hear the difference. Even myself who has had serious weight gain issues in the last 10 years have noticed that my voice pitch has gone up and as I've lost weight my voice has gotten deeper. Listen to vocalists sing as they age. Part of that is cause by weight gain.

there can be other factors, but then we're just getting into edge cases. Even Chris Pratts voice was a little higher back when he was on Parks and Req compared to his time on Guardians of the Galaxy after he lost some weight it got a tiny bit deeper. he wasn't obese, but I could tell the difference when I wasn't even looking for it.

Re: Review: Shadowrun Trilogy - A Fantastic Trio Utterly Let Down By Shoddy Ports

NotSoCryptic

@OorWullie They may love the games, doesn't mean they love the platforms they are asked to support. It would be a lie to say the Switch is universally loved especially when asked to backport to a machine they may not have been planning a release for with the original product. Not that this was the case here. Additionally the Switch audience has been far more receptable with the shipping of broken products thanks to their demands through out the life of the system to have lower quality ports of higher end games brought to the system. If its too broken devs will fix it, but leave it just broken enough that they don't have to expend to many resources and just take the extra cash off the table.

Long story short, don't expect consistency for support even for beloved titles. Either an executive who doesn't care or an engineer or producer who just can't be bothered to be kept from their family any longer than they already have will usually shurk the platform unless they themselves plan on using it. Given the rise of steamdeck those same devs will likely put more time into the PC version as a result if they absolutely must have portability.

Re: Reggie Talks About Nintendo's Slow Adoption Of Online Play

NotSoCryptic

Basically confirming what we all know to be true about nintendo. They stuck their heads in the sand and ignored the problem to focus on what they were comfortable with.

Nintendo's couch play would translate well online. It had a nice stable of titles through DS/3DS, to Wii, to Wii U, even on GBA/GBC. GameCube and N64 as well. It didn't take any kind of original thinking to accomplish this. Splatoon I'd say was their first attempt at specifically for online play.

They really should have started working on network play before the Wii U was even a thing. Given their history of pioneering such things from Sattelleview, the GC Network Adapter, 3DS, the Wii. The writing was on the wall and they didn't think for a second on how to bring couch to online. So this was a cop out, they didn't want to deal with it. I totally believe they don't look at what others are doing and honestly its one of their greatest faults. Yes Nintendo develops things in the Nintendo way, but their UI has always been a mess, eventually what other companies do eventually seeps into what they produce. Look at the Switch. It's os is just a dumbed down XMB or PlayStation 4 OS. It doesn't do anything particularly Nintendo. Looks nothing like the unfriendly tile interface of the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. Not saying they need to start making Halo or God of War, but they should take a moment and just poke their head up and get some inspiration. How can Nintendo bring Nintendo to what the competition is doing and make it.... well better the Nintendo way. Clearly they are talented, but they really should try to learn what has been tried and instead of wasting time retreading ground, use it to retry an idea in a new way.

Re: Legend Of Zelda Fans Accuse Indie Game Of "Ripping-Off" Link's Awakening

NotSoCryptic

@Moistnado No legal precident here. The Art style that even Nintendo honestly doesn't own. The game play has been ripped off more times then I'm willing to count if I tried. None of the basic concepts for worlds is inherently unique to zelda let alone Nintendo titles that are also constantly re-using ideas.

This might be a new and interesting take on the classic Zelda formula, especially when it seems Nintendo isn't interested in continuing to make games like that after BotW. So this will give fans of Classic Zelda something to move on to. I hope they get it out the door.

Re: Random: Banjo-Kazooie's Gruntilda Returns In Fan-Altered She-Hulk Poster

NotSoCryptic

"She-Hulk show itself has already drawn some heavy criticism for its reliance on CG, which some have declared to be "pretty bad"."

I don't think reliance is the right word here. That isn't the problem. It's the quality of the CG. The character is actually in line with one of the stories for she-hulk where she is more comfortable in green than in her normal skin. I've heard no one complaining about that. It's all been directed at how Shrek like it feels.

This isn't 2002 where people are complaining about "it has too much CG", we're well past that point and have 20 years worth of movie goers who have not known an industry without CG in their movies and expect it. The quality has come a long way.

Re: Ys And Trails Developer "Plans" To Release More Retro Titles On Switch

NotSoCryptic

@Lyricana i think you misread my comment and you came off needlessly antagonistic yourself unintentionally. I said I didn't care enough, not 'at all'. I come here to see what is coming to switch like xenoblade or Zelda. Sometimes square releases an exclusive. As time has marched on my need to buy for switch has greatly diminished, ergo I don't care much to buy for it. Legend of Heroes and Ys are both series I've been playing for some time now. Trails in the Sky a personal favorite. Up until recently the vita was my home for many of those games for my commute to work. So I take interest in what happens with it. During covid I moved and got a job that let's me work remote, so the ps4/5 has been home to trails of cold steel for me. As it stands my new steamdeck has also kind of become my home for portable gaming. Including these franchises. Many titles that were once only portable on switch that I have on steam too, have kind of made my switch less relevant. So I was expressing my desire to see more else where from both franchises. Pc and ps5 in particular. Especially since the former gives me the steamdeck and the later let's me play in the echo system I enjoy most.

So that just leaves first party titles really. We will see when switch 2 releases, but I'm not even sure I'll be back for that. Botw was a disappointment for me and it pains me to say that, xenoblade 3 and metroid prime are all im waiting for now. Some good games on switch, but my steamdeck has made it obsolete in many ways. Bloodstained runs as intended, it never has on switch and likely never will. Octopath and other titles just run better on steamdeck too. So it leaves me in the difficult position of retiring the system into legacy status early. Don't get me wrong my wii u is still setup, my gamecube modded, my snes has a rgb cable and is hooked up to a retrotink 5x along with my other retro consoles. I just don't know that the enthusiasm is there and I hope falcom/Nis start down a path of focusing on the switch to hard. Last time they did that we almost didn't see trails of cold steel or trails in the sky 3rd. Bad enough that we will never see the vita versions of trails in the sky. If they do bring them forward id like to see them on playstation for my trophies and to use my preferred controllers and to get my steam achievements, cards, etc on my steam deck.

Does that make sense? It's not that I don't care for Nintendo's games, I just do not care enough to go out of my way to support them or their hardware when I could have options.

Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Dev Says Converting Motion Controls Was "The Hardest Thing"

NotSoCryptic

Glad he got the controls working, but I do feel like we need a Switchmote that brings back the sensor bar and attempts to give us a bit more than what the joycons offer. I would seriously buy that kit day one to get that feel back from Skyward Sword on Wii. Wii-motion+ was pretty solid, but could do for improvements found in 2022 switch joycons, but it losing track constantly of orientation causes the sword to lose a lot of its precision right out of the game. Especially if you do full swings, which works better on Wii. Guess I'll just wait till the community manages to inject the switch versions visuals intot he wii's code.... maybe something I need to do myself.

Re: Ys And Trails Developer "Plans" To Release More Retro Titles On Switch

NotSoCryptic

I'll take some PS4/5 and Steam releases. Can't say I care about the Nintendo Switch enough to bother buying them for the system. Good for players in that space, but I'd prefer to have them on my Steamdeck or the PlayStation where all my Ys and Trails games are already. Especially if the PSP classics coming next month on PS4/5 start to include the PSP release Trails in the Sky and earlier ports of Legend of Heroes series.

Re: Newly-Translated Article Reveals Sega And Nintendo's Worries Of A '90s Atari-Style Crash

NotSoCryptic

@KingMike the M2 I really don't consider. Killed off before it had a chance to make it to market. I don't know about arcade machines but the hardware was sold off for various uses. I wouldn't consider the M2 the result of industry strength, but weakness of the 3do company to make its vision work. Honestly glad it didn't release it would have been a mid gen launch and really would have caused issues for the success of the industry during the ps2 era.

I also consider m2 part of the dreamcast era so not relevant to what was happening to the snes. M2 started becoming a topic around 97 I think.

Re: Newly-Translated Article Reveals Sega And Nintendo's Worries Of A '90s Atari-Style Crash

NotSoCryptic

lol ya we were no where close to an industry crash in the 90s. Problems we were facing were largely caused by Nintendo themselves and their 3rd parties. Those cartridge games were expensive and weren't made in large enough qauntity. people complain about 70 dollars today, imagine 90 dollars for Final Fantasy VI in the mid 90's. Granted there were sales and other factors at play.

We also had a lot of new platforms poping up. 32x, Sega CD, Saturn, PSX, Neo Geo, 3DO, Jaguar, N64. It was a bit much and not getting any cheaper.

I think by time Nintendo started to doing the multiple packins I was just waiting for N64 and Playstation to release.

It wasn't this poor software nonsense. That wasn't the problem. As anyone dipping into that library today and discovering games they didn't even know existed.

Re: April NPD: Switch Has Overtaken PS4 Sales In The US

NotSoCryptic

Sounds like Nintendo Life is expecting the same hardware end of life abandonment I am and have seen from Nintendo in the past 20 years. I think a lot of consumers are seeing this as well. Especially as we see some of those PC gamers who bought a Switch to play some of their favorites on the go, start migrating to steamdeck and other PC based handhelds. That audience is now gone. Which means possible after market surge.
