Just recently, we showcased the work of a talented pixel artist who reimagined the classic Game Boy title Super Mario Land on the handheld's successor, the Game Boy Advance. It was a lovely depiction of the game with stunning sprites and vivid colours, and now the artist has turned their attention to the Sonic franchise.
Posting a new set of images on Twitter, @huttaburger has reimagined Sonic the Hedgehog in the style of the recently released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, showcasing the characters Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy as they take to the streets for some serious close quarters combat.
It's another beautiful "what if" scenario and we'd have to agree with the artist here; a Sonic beat-em-up would most definitely be cool!
Make sure to check out @huttaburger's Twitter page for more pixelated artwork.
What do you make of this pixelated reimaging of Sonic the Hedgehog? Would you play a game like this from the franchise? Let us know!

Huh. Didn’t know how bad I needed a sonic beat ‘em up till now. And now, I can’t live without it.
If there was a company that let's their mascot do the more ridiculous things in the industry, it'll be SEGA.
Made him play tennis and drive cars and raise alien children. If that's not a problem, a beat 'em up is entirely in the realm of possibility.
There once was a Sonic beat em up.
As long as Sonic is riding on the coattails of Breath of the Wild (and potentially the beat 'em up genre), next you'll be suggesting a Dr. Mario rip-off where Sonic deals speed... speedily.
Make it happen sega.
I would play this at a hearbeat.
Did people even like Sonic Battle?
The characters would be Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Blaze, and as an unlockable, Shadow.
Are you listening Sega?……this is what the Sonic fans want, not open world garbage!
Technically there already was a Sonic game like this........sort of and it was called Sonic Battle.
HOLY! This is amazing! SEGA do it now!
I just looked at this artist's other work and it's all amazing! Nintendo, please hire them to make 16-bit games for all major franchises and print money off of them.
YES YES YES SO MUCH YES!!!
I’m not typically a fan of these types of posts, but dang, this would be an awesome game…
Why stop at Sonic, why not a Sega All-Stars beat em up where you can play as Sonic (from Sonic the Hedgehog), Tails (from Tails Adventures), Knuckles (from Knuckles Chaotix), Shadow (from Shadow the Hedgehog), Blaze (from Sonic Rush and Streets of Rage), Ristar (from Ristar), Vectorman (from Vectoman), Gillius Thunder (from Golden Axe), Alex Kidd (from Alex Kidd), Joe Musashi (from Shinobi), Bayonetta (from Bayonetta), Jack Cayman (from Madworld), Kazuma Kiryu (Yakuza), Akira Yuki (from Virtua Fighter), Ryo Hazuki (from Shenmue), Billy Hatcher, Samba de Amigo, Bug!, NiGHTS, Astal, Vyse (from Skies of Arcadia), Landon (from Lord of the Sword), Alis (from Phantasy Star), Max (from Shining Force), Prince Ali (from Beyond Oasis), Alisia (from Alisia Dragoon), Orta (from Panzer Dragoon), Graffiti Kid (from Jet Set Radio), Sketch Turner (from Comix Zone), Fang the Sniper (from Triple Troubles), Sakura (from Sakura Taisen), Arle Nadja (from Puyo Puyo), Amy Rose (from Sonic CD), Honey (from Fighting Vipers), Kurosawa (from Last Bronx), Slash (from Eternal Champions), etc., that would be much better.
Damn, this is playing with a huge amount of fire.
@Scapetti I did and I have no regrets whatso ever.
Sooo cooool! I'd play it.
It's sad there's been a huge lack of new Sonic spinoff games in recent years.
I'm loving Shredders Revenge but it's making me wish the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie game for the Sega Genesis would go on the Sega NSO. That was my first beat em up experience and I LOVED that as a kid.
There was a brief but wonderful period of time where THE way to make a licensed game was to turn it into a beat-'em-up, and I wouldn't mind at ALL if Shredders Revenge brought us back to that place.
@Jmjfrank Unfortunately, I'm sure the licensing deals with now Hasbro who owns the PR series will stop the older games from appearing on anything.
@Nua oh I'm sure. Its doubtful but would be a welcome surprise for me (I think I'd be the only person excited for it anyway haha)
@Jhena
is that the beginning of a sea shanty?
We've had Sonic beat em ups before and they kinda sucked. Sonic Battle anyone?
Has this legit even been pitched to Sega? As far as companies that are open to collaborative projects this seems like something Sega should seriously consider with the artist. Surely there is a studio out there that would collab on this.
Sonic could be cool. But honestly, seeing Super Shredder do that Sigma-style dash attack made me realize how badly I want to see a Mega Man X beat-em-up game.
(also wouldn't mind a modern Marvel beat-em-up game with sprite based graphics)
Imagine if more games ventured off the beaten path, for a mini 0.5 game or something. For example here, a platformer turning into a beat'em-up. Or a halo infinite 1.5, where it takes cues from super contra: alien wars. GoW ala SoR4.
I hope someone eventually turns this into a fan game, the concept and the art is way too cool.
I'm actually surprised this type of Sonic game wasn't created 15 or 20 years ago already!
This... is a beautiful idea. If SEGA doesn't do it, I hope that talented fan game developers do one day.
The art looks awesome (except for the size of those cars are all wrong).
But, I dunno, would enough people really want a Sonic brawler? I'd be interested but most people just like to ridicule Sonic games that don't fit a very specific mold.
The sprite work is beautiful, but what really got me was not only the inclusion of Sonic Adventure's Station Square, but that statue guy in the first image! XD
@Jmjfrank There are plenty of nostalgic 90s gamers out there, and when Power Rangers is wrote well and marketed well to kids, they are interested in it too. Recent season have not been anywhere near as popular, compared to other shows in the same genre.
As good as chicken in a destroyed trash can.
Yes, I realize this can be negative or positive depending on your affinity with the genre.
