During the recent Xbox Bethesda showcase, Blizzard shared a few announcements. One of them was the news that Overwatch 2 would be launching in early access on PC and consoles on October 4th. According to the PR, this includes Nintendo Switch.
It was also confirmed the player-versus-player multiplayer component will be free-to-play for everyone - with regular content updates including heroes, maps, modes, and more. Of course, there'll be "premium" cosmetics as well.
Overwatch 2's multiplayer will be made up of five-versus-five matches, and will also support cross-platform play and cross-platform progression.
At the launch of the game, players will have the chance to try out the newest tank hero, known as the Junker Queen. More details about this new hero and Overwatch 2 will be revealed later this week on June 16th during a special broadcast.

First! I love me some OVERWATCH and the gameplay during the showcase looked fantastic. If they can get it running as good as the first game on Switch I'm all in.
I know it's popular to hate F2P, but I'm all for it with games that focus heavily on online multiplayer. Ensures a larger online community. If they can make money off dopes buying cosmetics, more power to them. I'll just enjoy the free game.
The only thing I'd be concerned about is...just how different is this going to be from the original Overwatch? Because from what I saw...it really didn't look THAT much different. Other than being free to play, how is it going to set itself apart from the original Overwatch?
Huh interesting. Might see what all the hubbub is about.
I loved the first one, got it a few years back during its fourth competitive season (I think it’s on its 30th or something by now) and loved every second of it. A bunch of modes, seasonal content additions, user made content, good casual and competitive play, some fun lore that even showed up in the stages, all being capped off by having characters that actually play different from each other, which at the time for me, was HUGE when it comes to FPS games. Sadly, the fun didn’t last long, as my current housing is out in the middle of nowhere with pretty sad internet. That said, I’ve gotten to play it a few times since at friends’ houses, and it’s always a good time. With OW2 being free to play, I implore whoever hasn’t played the first to give it a chance. There’s not much to lose, and you could have a lot of fun. I really hope this business model gets more people into it, cuz I know I’m super excited just to get back into the excitement of new content whenever I get the chance!
F2P and Activision Blizzard. What could possibly go wrong?
Sounds awesome! I can deal with the downgraded graphics and inevitable lag spikes (managed 700+ hours of Fortnite on switch despite its shortcomings and still enjoy it) so I'm totally down to add this to my roster of daily play games if it runs even remotely well.
I love f2p due to well..it being free and not requiring the horrible NSO ($8 for Fortnite battle pass a year ago that I still get free every season now is a good deal), and if it's a shooter that's all about cosmetics as micro transactions all the better, but I'm fine grinding out upgrades and whatnot as well as that's half the fun of playing games, unlocking.
Much like the rest of the XBox showcase, this just felt typical. Everything was so typical. Don't get me wrong, there were some nice looking games but just lacking a spark somewhere. But I would imagine that's exactly what XBox fans want. More power! Day one on Gamepass is starting to have the same vibe as 'straight to video.'
A stylistically garbled version of an already somewhat compromised setting. Probably the first time I see something this bereft of personality pose as a Blizzard flagship title.
That said, it's likely still a lot of fun to play. ^^
I feel like f2p is the press in case of emergency button, if simultaneously they inexplicably fail to provide an exciting sequel to one of the most notable games of the past decade and the company behind them ends up being the dirt worst in all of gaming.
Though because I did take advantage of that NSO free trial period for Overwatch 1 when that happened, I can have played both Overwatch games without having given Activision Blizzard my money! This is very funny to me.
@Highlar I think there's also a "story" PVE mode.
Since everything that has been going at Blizzard, I have little to no faith in the quality of their games.
@Highlar Same here. One new hero and for the rest it looked pretty much the exact same game modes, just some new environments to shoot in.
My main concern is the F2P part and how they going to handle this. Seeing the outrage and insanity of the Microtransactions and lootboxes in their recently released Diablo Immortal game, that is banned from several EU countries.
I sincerly hope Blizzard is taking note of this.
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but am I the only one that gets tired of seeing masculine women with a half-shaved head? Personally, I prefer tomboyish girls that still have a bit of feminine traits in her design, like Tracer, Shantae, Kazooie, Dixie Kong, Aika from Skies of Arcadia, etc. But, maybe that is just me.
@RareFan Thats the nice thing about Overwatch. It has a wide variety of female characters. Lots of different types.
F2P from ActiBlizz.
Now that's a recipe for high quality, fairness, transparency and pro-consumer design!
I was kinda not happy about the ftp model at first, but the. Thought about it, this is actually really good idea, Two is basically an upgrade of one and they already had all the stuff for ftp game to work.
Also happy about the new character, been wanting her in the game since I saw the posters around the map, and was just talking about it the other day!
@RareFan It’s always the same hair style too, I think muscular woman are awesome, but a lot of them look the same, I agree with you.
Well, it is not that I'm against these types of women, but most companies used them, or women in general, to promote themselves. Which is also unfair.
Hyped about this announcement. I have OW on the Switch but nobody to play with. Now I can play it with my family without spending any more money! Super stoked about the F2P stuff on the Switch recently. Already enjoying Knockout City and will be doing Fall Guys soon then this one shortly after
@Snatcher Looking forward to play with new players mostly since I really suck at the game. Hoping for a more balanced matchmaking with the F2P transition. More of a casual player in OW so I think this will help players like me.
Lost interest in the first game due to how boring it got amongst other things I won't mention here but seeing as PvP is free to play I suppose I'll check it out.
PvP being free to play is great, awesome, love it
But what about the PvE? Ya know? The mode I am ACTUALLY looking forward to! lol
@RareFan It could be you're not the target audience. And that's okay!
I, for one, welcome our Amazonian overlords.
ive always prefered finding/picking up weapons and or vehichles. its really sad most fps these days aside from halo, rely on loadouts. UGH. seems a bit too predetermined and predictable these days.
I wonder if that fox is a hint to a new characters ability, maybe gengi and hanzo's sister?
Overwatch is one of my most played games on my Switch. I will definitely be checking it out in October.
Is the free to play only the online versus modes or does it include the story/co-op mode that was talked about in the past year?
Best part of that awful Xbox Showcase. I'm definitely going to play this one.
@CharlieGirl - He does have a point though. The design decision for many muscled women have a default of a half shaved head is notably common. The trope of "strong woman" starting to associate to the hairstyle usually suggests how common its gotten.
It's like how most Battle Royale games start you off by jumping off of something from the sky. It's not wrong, just quite common to a point it feels like it's necessary.
More on topic myself; I think the abrupt abandonment of the first Overwatch from the development team has given me pause to jump into the second, I honestly found myself back into Paladins because of that, and honestly (in spite of bugs) I have been comfortable there.
Hah, after the dumpster fire that was Overwatch on Switch, hard pass.
F2P? Couldn't they just release a complete game for 40 bucks?
I’m actually very excited to hear about this! Will definitely be getting it.
@NotSoCryptic how’s it a dumpster fire when I win 70 percent of my games with cross play on? I can handle 30 FPS and downgraded visuals, seems like you can’t kid.
