The humble Game Boy is no stranger to the modding scene. We've seen plenty of incredible creations over the years, including a bizarre GBA / Tiger Electronics hybrid, along with a whole bunch of incredible custom designs by just one person.
This new one might be one of the coolest creations we've seen yet, perhaps due to its deceptive simplicity. Built by artist Obirux, it's essentially a horizontal Game Boy created using original DMG shells and a modern IPS screen. So, you've got the innards of an original Game Boy, but the form factor of, say, the Game Boy Advance.

What's great about this design is that there's very little that's actually "new" here; despite the drastically different form factor, this is still essentially an original Game Boy. It just looks a bit different, is all. If you want to check out some more of Obirux's designs, you can check out their website or Instagram page.
What do you make of this custom Game Boy design? Would you want one in your collection? Let us know!

I always liked the GBA feel, so this looks great to me. Too bad the screen is too small between your hands, but I wouldn't have it changed either since the goal was to keep it mostly the same
If only there was a GB/GBC mini ……….
I have the original Gameboy and kept it all original except the screen and replaced it with IPS V5 and it is beautiful.
This looks very comfortable.
Love it.
I love it, except the placement of the Start / Select buttons. I think they're in a bit of an awkward spot. Not that you need them very often during most gameplay, but still.
I get having the speaker still on the right for uniformity, but it seems like it'd be more playable with start and select over there instead.
This looks wonderful. I was only playing on my Gameboy last night after I decided to fish it out. I don't think I'd be brave enough to take it apart though to do something like this.
I like it, though I'd change the placement of the start/select buttons to be on the right side of the unit instead.
It really is stunning! Agree with others that the placement for Start / Select could move. Perhaps above the A/B buttons. And maybe could add stereo speakers?
For a moment when I saw that picture I thought it was a Game Fighter. https://blog.gg8.se/wordpress/2012/11/11/gameboy-clone-game-fighter-teardown/
Put the start, select on the bottom of the gameboy and a speaker on each side then we can talk money!💲🤑💲
@YoshiF2 : That’s what the Game & Watch knickknacks should have been. They have gorgeous screens, and looooong battery life, but they’re used solely for playing a couple of NES ROMs (and in Zelda’s case, the GB version of Link’s Awakening also).
Such a waste of all that tech.
This is really nice looking! I much prefer the horizontal stretch compared to the vertical. Makes me want to relive my childhood but with this instead.
@Pillowpants
Agreed, shouldhave placed them above a and b.
Still, great work.
Wow that looks so cool! A slightly bigger screen would have been awesome, but I guess they wanted that classic feel.
Oh man if only this was the system we got 30 years ago.
