Dragon Quest X's offline release — elaborately titled Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline — is rising in Japan later this year.
Initially scheduled for a February 2022 launch, this new version of the MMORPG that you'll be able to play offline will be released in Japan on 15th September.
While we're excited for a new version of this game to finally get a confirmed date, we're still a little bit sad we don't have a Western release date yet — especially given the series' rise in popularity over the past few years
The offline version of the 10th mainline Dragon Quest game will be getting some exclusive content that's set in the past and you'll get to meet new characters there too.
Maybe one day we'll see this on the other side of the world or in English, but for now, we'll just have to watch jealously as our friends over in Japan get to dig in. Let us know if you want this to come to the West in the comments!

Still holding out hope. I've been holding since the original Wii release for the online version... I just want to be able to experience the story of this game in some form.
I guess I'll be waiting for the inevitable fan translation of this game then playing it.
So far, June 2022 seems to have brought us more notable new releases that are avoiding the Switch than arriving on the platform. In the current context, this insular approach to Dragon Quest is more than tone-deaf... it's exasperating. DQ X could come along to take your heart, or sing to us in lulling silky tones, but no...
Screw that, where on earth is dragon quest heroes!?
I was so excited for that when the switch first launched.
@Kiwi_Unlimited
Well, you can get Dragon Quest Heroes 1 and 2 on PS4 in English version.
I can see why the English version online hasn't come this way, but the offline version should hopefully be in the works. ♡♡♡
Fingers crossed for a US release someday!
Hopefully we get a US release and this paves the way for FF11 and FF14 to see similar treatment in the future.
@moodycat
The other problem is this game and its expansions combined has more text to translate than three DQ11s. And it's a decade old game that doesn't have the big, luxurious AAA aesthetic of 11. I honestly don't think it truly has much appeal to anyone who isn't already a huge Dragon Quest fan. And this is coming from someone who is a big diaper-wearing DQ fanboy who has played a considerable amount of DQX in Japanese. It would be a huuuuuge investment to localize this one into multiple languages for western markets when the chances of substantial profit for the most niche entry in the series is smaller than people seem to want to believe.

To be fair, it was over a year between the JP and US release of Dragon Quest XI.
Despite not really like the chibi style I'd still play this to smithereens being a fan of the series. Why am I thinking we won't see this in the West?
Would love to see them do something like this for ffxi. The story in that game was pretty interesting just locked behind the mmo aspect of the game. I would love to play through that story on my own at my own pace.
I gave up hope on the MMO years ago and honestly don't blame SE; that would've been a LOT of text to translate to other languages, especially with how MMOs gradually expand in content during their lifetime. That said, since Dragon Quest X Offline is a condensed version of the game, I wouldn't think the script would be as much of a challenge?
I'd love to see this one leave Japan. I'd gladly settle for the offline version, chibi or not.
Square Enix is trying their best to pretend this game doesn't exist to us other non-Japanese gamers. Really makes me lost all respect for them. This is a Wii game with 2002 techs, why is it so hard to localize this for the whole world in 2022 now?
The fact that we're even talking about waiting for localization in 2022 about a game developed by a company that has internationally released games is astounding.
Looking forward to getting this! The delay gives me some breathing room.
@ModdedInkling
Not only that, but a mainline game in the second-most-beloved JRPG series in the world.
I'm also not wild about the chibi style but I would buy this day 1 regardless. The rest of the DQ mainline games have all ranged from good to some of the best RPGs ever.
@Anti-Matter
A fair enough point, I suppose, but I've never owned an Xbox or Playstation.
I think I can get it on PC, but why reward SquareEnix (they're behind Dragon Quest, these days, right?) for not bringing a game out on a platform I want it on.
Example:
EA assumed for years that people weren't buying their games on Nintendo products because it was the wrong audience. Then when people bought the game elsewhere, EA argued that that's where the audience was, without discussing the fact that they brought over incomplete ports (or no port at all) as potentially the reason.
If I tell companies it's okay to skip my favorite system, they'll keep skipping my favorite system.
Pretty sure this is all tied to how well XI did in the west. It did well in reviews, but it's the sales that count.
Fingers crossed. I loved XI. Would love to play this.
I really wish this would come west, but I'm afraid it will skip us just like the 3DS version of 11 that I REALLY wanted to play.
@BeefSanta I don’t even wanna know how big the vault is to keep the script for this game. I keep getting flashbacks of the bookshelf of binders for VII. The game guides are thick enough as is.
@moodycat I don't doubt that SE could afford the localization. But I truly think you overestimate the hypothetical potential sales figures for a game this old and dated.
@Tyranexx but we don't know what "condensed" means. I've been reading all the Japanese news posts I can find and it's still unclear. Depending on how many expansions they include, I think you underestimate the volumes of text there is. And localizing to English isn't enough these days. How many languages was DQ11 translated into? We're talking big time sales needed. DQ11 did great in the west, which is fantastic, but that doesn't mean the very dated predecessor with a far-from-big budget look and feel will do anywhere near as well.
@BeefSanta All they do is release remakes and remasters and you're really complaining about the quality of this particular game In terms of age?
@BeefSanta I don't disagree, though I think we do need to learn what is included in this version...and we possibly won't get the full story until its Japanese release. I would certainly think there'd be less text vs. the online/regular version, which I was trying to point out. I'm not saying translation would be a breeze - especially with multiple languages - but it's certainly possible if the want and profit is there.
If all else fails, I'll settle for a fan translation if one ever materializes.
Welp, i've played the online version since 2020 and i hope the western release for offline comes soon, i'm still thinking about importing it but after playing online with some translation tools i can't go back, especially since people from the US can play it without relying on a VPN since 2019
Wait... what the flip, this game has already been out in Japan the whole time... I thought the point of the offline version was to do a western release??!! Omg this is stupid as hell.
@LittleGhost bro, I'd play this (sort of again) in a heartbeat if it got a Western release. lmao I'm not complaining about its dated-ness (as I've said before, I've played a bunch of the online version in Japanese), I'm saying it being dated is part of why it won't come to the west: I don't think SE believes it will appeal to enough Westerners to turn a profit off the huge amount of work in localizing that people here keep brushing off. That's all I'm saying. Don't forget that SE never brough the 3DS DQ11 to the West, and if anything, at this point DQ10 looks kinda like a 3DS game on a console. And while they do a lot of remasters/ports, **most** of them already had English translations or were much less text-heavy than something like DQ10. In fact, I'd say almost all their remasters/ports combined might approach the amount of text in DQ10 and its expansions lol
@BeefSanta Oh all right. Yeah that's a lot different than my initial take away I get you. Apologies.
