Capcom's blue bomber series Mega Man continues to grow in sales - with the company's latest financial results for the 1st quarter of fiscal year 2022 revealing the franchise has now shifted 38 million units worldwide since its original debut in 1987.
As highlighted by the Mega Man news site Rockman-Corner, the franchise grew an additional one million units from the previously reported 37 million sold in July last year. In comparison, Resident Evil has sold 127 million units, the Monster Hunter series has sold 84 million units and Street Fighter has sold 48 million units.
The latest mainline Mega Man entry was Mega Man 11, released on all platforms including the Switch in 2018. Capcom also has plenty more lined up for Mega Man fans in the future - with the company announcing Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection for 2023. This collection will feature 10 games, with the digital versions split into "Volume 1" and "Volume 2".

It would be nice to get something new but they’ll probably drag things out with a collection just for those 3 Star Force games before that happens.
That's a lot of Mega Mans!
NINJA APPROVED
It’s time for Megaman X9!!!
I'm surprised the number isn't higher after so many megamans (megamen?). Definitely time for some new games. Need to sell about 20 times more to catch up to Mario.
They're classics so not a surprise really.
I am sure the are others out there like me who have bought multiple copies of Mega Man games on different consoles.
And this article just reminded me that I still need to play Mega Man 11
Just imagine how much Mega Man would had sold if Capcom did not cancelled these versions of Mega Man games:
@Serpenterror Sad. Just so, so sad…
I most Legends 3 but in the absence of that I'll take X9
Can we finally have a Mega Man 1 version where you play as Bad Box Art Mega Man?
If capcom keeps the art direction from #11, i hope they fix megaman animations, i like the game alot but o dont know why, his movement seems a little off to me, its the one thing about the game that i didn't really liked
Lord knows I've bought the NES 6 about 10 different times for every system I've had dating back to the PS2, to say nothing of owning them on the original hardware.
@HammerGalladeBro REVIVE MEGAMAN UNIVERSE!!!
@Serpenterror LOL, 3DO and 32x versions of X3 and X4 would've moved maybe 100 copies combined.
This shows how niche Mega Man is when SMB1 alone outsold the entire franchise.
Good for the Blue Bomber. I actually need to pick up that Zero collection game.
@NeonPizza you know what could work? Maybe Metroid Other M gameplay in a Megaman game.
@Ade117 SMB1 has outsold many franchises. That doesn’t necessarily make them niche, it just means Super Mario Bros. was huge.
I'm pretty sure I'm responsible for about 40 or 50 of those 38 million sales. My favorite series, and I second that we need new games. X9, Legends 3, MM12, Bring 'Em All On Man! (Unconfirmed future Mega Man robot master.)
Mega Man remains one of my favourite franchises of all time from Capcom. I'm really looking forward to the battle network compilation
@Serpenterror
Megaman 8 X4 X5 X6 cancelled on Super Famicom ? Never heard of this.
Congrats to the series. I watched longplays of Megaman Legends 1 and 2, plus the Legends Spin-off with the villains. It was very entertaining and I am sure I would love to play those games. Sadly the ebay prices are too high. Legends 3 would be awesome too.
I have not played the Battle Network series yet, so I might try those. 10 games seems like a lot. Pretty cool.
There was once a time when the amount of Megaman games released equalled this figure.
Jokes aside though, good for the old Blue robot mascot of Capcom. We all love a tryer. I personally didn't enjoy alot of the Megaman games, the music however had some belters in, so perhaps a rhythm action game is where Megaman should have headed for the modern era?
That ought to shut up people who thinks it hardly sells.
@FishyS Why does it need to catch up to Mario? It's not a Nintendo exclusive
@Ade117 I don't think that word means what you think it means. Maybe try looking up the definition first. It means to occupy a specific space in nature. To find one's place. Or to cater to a very small percentage of the market. Mega Man has always been fairly popular. A game series does not have to be Mario or Pokemon levels of popular to be successful. Otherwise it would have died out long ago because it wasn't making the company money.
Niche would be something like point n clicks or dating sims in terms of genre.
Or gimmicks such as wii controls, the power pad, or the handicap friendly controllers.
@Tempestryke dont know what word you are referring to, i could have made a mistake since english is not my mother tongue and sometimes i do type fast (spell check have messed before too)
I want a mega man 12 and x reboot. I feel like now In 2020s they could make x 3D and it would be amazing. Unlike the last time they tried when a lot of companies and development teams were still trying to perfect the technique.
@EriXz I assume he has mistaken your comment with the one by Ade117.
Only 38 Million? kind of sad when you think about it. How many Mega Man games are there? 11 Main line? 8 X series? The GB/GBC variants? The Battle network games is like what 3 or 4 titles? the GBA MMX Zero games.... 3 of those maybe? The 3D megaman titles was like 3 of those? I'm sure I'm leaving something out, but it means most of these games sold less than a million units.
Keep in mind that titles like Horizon Zero Dawn managed 20 million, with 17 million of that just on PS4 alone. Safe to say Horizon Forbiden West will do similar numbers and easily dwarf the entire life time sales of mega man in just 2 games. That isn't even getting into a single title like Mario Kart 8 or Breath of the Wild (spits).
@Ade117
SMB1 was packed in with almost every NES until they swapped it out for SMB3 late in the system’s life.
@Jhena
The only affordable way to play the Legends games legitimately is to buy a PS3 and get the PSN versions before Sony shuts the store down.
Legends isn’t horribly priced most of the time, but Legends 2 is stupidly expensive. It’s only 8 bucks on the PS3 PSN.
@NotSoCryptic
That’s not really that sad. It’s still a successful franchise.
Megaman went through a slump. I would consider Megaman X4 and Megaman 8 the Waterloo moment for the franchise. After that sales dropped dramatically.
The BN games on portable sold fairly well. But overall the franchise went through a slump as Capcom figured out what to do with it after X4 and 8.
It’s still a successful series but we haven’t gotten out of that slump yet. And Capcom is focusing mainly on Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter as their tent pole AAA titles for now.
I would like to see Capcom bring another X game out with AAA production values. I think it could move units today. It just needs to be marketed correctly.
It's nice to see megaman is still ever so popular.
it's a classic by now. <3
@Synecdoche That is a valid point. Plus, pack in games will always sell more. What's important is that Mega Man is on an upward trajectory so I'm happy for the fans.
@OrtadragoonX
Thanks for letting me know. I have a PS 3 so it should be no problem.
@Serpenterror Totally agree with this. Wish Mega Man & Bass also hit the SNES back then, but Mega Man 8 and X4 on the SNES itself would have probably been a downgrade.
Definitely needed The Wily Wars on the SNES. In the vein of Super Mario All Stars, it would have done well.
Also, still pretty upset Street Fighter X Mega Man isn’t on consoles. Was hoping for it to pop up on 3DS.
@HammerGalladeBro you can play as him in Street Fighter X Tekken!
@NKR nope, it was just existential thinking on his part.
Been a Mega Man fan since I read that one issue of Nintendo Power where they showcased Mega Man 2 in the 80s. I have bought every iteration minus the Battle Network series, which I’ll happily dive into with the upcoming Collection. Love that Capcom is reinvesting.
I'd take a Megaman X9 with SNES graphics please.
@Migoshuro could be 🙂
I love me some megaman
Ngl with the sheer quantity of titles that have come out for the blue bomber I expected it to be way higher. Like this takes into account all the series and rereleases and it was overtaken by Animal Crossing: New Horizons alone?
Soooo hey Capcom, it's time for a new:
... Wun can only hope.
@EriXz The mistake was mine, I thought I was responding to Ade117. My apologies.
@Tempestryke 👍🏻
I was honestly expecting it to be bigger, but I'm not complaining since every new game of Megaman's is always a treat
