@KidSparta Having “Return” twice in a title is overly redundant, though. The second game wasn’t called “Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze,” why would the third game bring back the “Returns” subtitle?
Semantics aside though, I’d love for K. Rool to come back.
@IronMan30 going forward? Over the past eight years, S-E has already released over thirty games physically alone on Switch, several of which Nintendo themselves published, and that’s just in the west.
@Zeebor15 I got no beef with having your own head canon for games as I do it myself sometimes, but I would recommend referring to games by their actual title when explaining something to a stranger online to avoid confusion.
On that note, I think it’s important to keep up with a standardized referendum that if you include the Paon games as numbered DKC games, it is almost detrimental to include the Donkey Kong Land games in the same space as they are not ports of the DKC trilogy, but entirely different games.
@Zeebor15 I think there’s been a misunderstanding. I wasn’t arguing with you over double standards involving dev resources or port/remake price differences.
I was specifically confused about your referencing, “Donkey Kong 5,” which is confusing to me because I had no idea what game you were talking about.
I was originally thinking you meant either Mario Vs. Donkey Kong or DKC Returns, both of which are technically the fifth games in their respective series, but nobody ever has referred to either of those games as “Donkey Kong 5.”
I mean no disrespect, I was just trying to figure out what game you were talking about by your use of a title that simply officially doesn’t exist.
I know everyone and their respective mothers want a Xenoblade X port, and that’s fine. I would take it (though I already have the Wii U version, so unless it’s optimized really well and/or plays so well without the gamepad hub/map, I’m fine without yet another Switch port).
However, much more importantly, after the hotness that was Future Redeemed, it is unthinkable for every Xeno fan to not constantly be demanding a Xenosaga Remastered Trilogy for Switch at this point.
@Darkakuahebi There’s no way S-E would announce this for XBOX and NOT bring it to the west. Also, Live-a-Live was never released in the west UNTIL its HD-2D remake a few years ago. I’m fairly confident it won’t be stuck in Japan.
@Kiyata honestly, we’re all better off without the Secret of Mana Remake on Switch. It’s an absolute unmitigated disaster that should never have happened.
Collection of Mana on Switch is the best way to play that game in all its original, gorgeous glory anyway, along with the original Seiken Densetsu 3, which is to say nothing of how incredibly good the Trials of Mana remake is, regardless of if you play it on Switch or PS4.
I’m still convinced DQXII is going to be PS5 exclusive. I know the general rule is that the newest DQ is always released for the most prominent system with the biggest install base, but also knowing SE, I’ve a feeling that they would prefer to release it on more powerful hardware (see: Visions of Mana).
This doesn’t rule out the Switch successor getting a port (or launch til title like certain other users have indicated) but I’m skeptical.
As a Switch guy, Trials of Mana, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, and Dragon Quest Monsters Dark Prince have been absolute juggernauts insofar as my overall playtime and level of enjoyment from S-E the past four years.
A few others have been really great, albeit ports of PS4 games, with Nier Automata and Dragon Quest XI.
A few others still have been of high quality, but not really the games for me (Octopath Traveller I&II, Triangle Strategy, Bravely Default, Dragon Quest Builders 1&2).
Even more still, we’ve had a tonne of HD ports of great older games with FFI-XII, Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, and Crisis Core.
I haven’t yet gotten to play the remasters of Live-A-Live or Star Ocean 2 yet.
@Serpenterror Quick nitpick: Rodea was not a swan song. Not only was it critically panned, but it released SAME day on Wii, Wii U and 3DS in 2015, almost three years into the Wii U’s lifecycle.
Nintendo going from their worst selling home console to their best selling home console back-to-back is integral history to understand the current gaming landscape and future trends.
To anybody who hasn’t played a Monlithsoft game before and is also OCD about 100% runs, keep a guide handy because there are a ton of permanent missables.
Nintendo will milk the Switch for all it’s worth now that it’s a single system developer; no more handheld exclusive system to fall back on in the event of the Switch successor pulling a Wii U.
And honestly, at this point? Nothing to lose on their end. The way they keep chipping away at the numbers every quarter, they’re likely to hit that coveted 155 million+ mark and become the best selling console of all time.
I’m about twenty hours in, and other than my extreme hatred for the plethora of forced side scrolling perspective shifts scattered all over the goddamn place on Chaos Island and the rather lackluster Portal stages, everything else is very above average.
Solid 7.5 from me, and this is coming from someone who almost exclusively plays only the 2D Sonic games (SA1&2 get preferential treatment over the rest of the 3D Sonic games because of legacy and me being an idiot kid when I played them and loved them originally).
I’ve given up on MP4. Dread was a beautiful consolation prize without us knowing that that’s what it was, which didn’t detract from how good it ended up being, but in the end, I think MP4 is dead in the water.
Would be ironic if it gets the Dread treatment sixteen years later.
Somehow, the Paper Mario games and the Mario and Luigi games hit the bottom of the hill around the same time, and while I love the system, I blame the 3DS.
I’m excited for a new personalized digital Nintendo experience for, you know, a little more money than anyone wants to pay in the near future, because that way I know I’m special.
I’ve heard rumors that separately from the DeNA deal, Nintendo and Yuga Labs will have a joint company and they’re calling it, “Nintendo for Thee” or “NFT” and the possibilities are trendless.
I’m still befuddled by the lack of DQHI&II. They were both like, ALREADY LOCALIZED for the PS4. If it’s a memory issue, release them both separately at $30 apiece. Bam. Friggin… easy gotdamn peasy.
At least Nintendo can point back to the Switch in fifteen years and say, “Look! We DID do cloud gaming forever ago butyoudidntsupportit!!!1” when they have the actual infrastructure to do so with Switch 4 but won’t or whatever.
@LemyAtom Oh, neat, I didn’t know the Switch even supported stylus control. Perhaps if that option is available, I might actually play in handheld mode.
It is kind of funny that it took S-E this long to make a console version of Theatrhym; namely, like six years after the perfect console for that style of gameplay had already been put out to the pasture…
@LemyAtom I am uncertain if it will retain touchscreen support, but if it does, I honestly don’t really play in handheld mode on Switch, and the stylus on the 3DS really felt like the most intuitive way to play the game; I doubt my index finger is dexterous enough on its own to emulate the movements required for the expert level songs, plus I already hate touching the Switch screen because I have terribly oily hands and it’s just the worst.
@alexybubble I’m going to be honest, after seventy hours in the game (though over the course of about eight years), I literally just picked up the game a few moments ago for the first time in a few years to try out button controls for the first time.
It was… doable, especially on the easy and normal levels. But I had a very difficult time adjusting to the expert levels, and I consistently score at least SS rank on most expert songs with the stylus. I suppose since the Switch controller isn’t as delicate as the circle pad on the 3DS, I might fare better without fear of breaking the damn thing. Time will tell, at least, as I am still pretty interested in this game…
So Europe had it as bad as America, huh? I guess Nintendo’s online presence is simply garbage regardless of the geography…
As someone who just recently received the special edition in the mail a few days ago, let me say it was one of the the most unpleasant and aggravatingly annoying transactions I’ve ever had the displeasure of willingly submitting myself to and that I hope all of you hopefuls in here that haven’t yet secured a copy remain patient and vigilant and hope they do a mulligan like they did over here.
I played the ***** outta the original two games on 3DS, but how well will the gameplay really transition to consoles without touchscreen, the one element of the 3DS that made the game actually fun to play?
Why Nintendo doesn’t just publish Dragon Quest X for Switch in the west is beyond me. It’s not like they haven’t taken up the mantle many times before…
If S-E’s PR going forward to combat negative feedback on their ridiculous incentive to milk the already dying NFT market they decided was worth effing with, is, “Well, f<ck you, here’s like twenty actual games or so,” then I see it as a momentary win.

Re: 50 Best GameCube Games Of All Time
TTYD is really good, easily a top ten for the Cube, but its place at the top of this list seems very “re-recency bias.” I said it.
Solid overall picks, though I don’t particularly think compilations should be included.

Hell, it took Metroid Dread sixteen years to get released.

@sword_9mm While, “25+ years” is technically correct, “nearly 38 years,” is more accurate.

Really hoping this doesn’t affect Visions of Mana even though I don’t yet have the hardware to play it.
DQIII HD seems to be in a precarious position specifically because of the wording used to describe their plans going forward.
I’m also curious if the FFIX remake was actually in development and if it’s also gotten the axe if so.
DQXII is safe, but it’ll be way delayed, and it’s not even confirmed to be on Switch…
Maybe since Nintendo would foot the bill for a potential SMRPG2, they’d at least get some near guaranteed decent money out of it.

F-Zero, Golden Sun, Eternal Darkness, DKC, Star Fox but not dumb and lame, Sin and Punishment, Kid Icarus, in that order.
I would add Mother, but we’ll never get 3 anyway, so eff the whole prospect.

Re: Talking Point: As Zelda: Wind Waker Turns 20, Doesn't Toon Link Deserve A Second Chance?
Mixed bag for me.
The Wind Waker is still a top three Zelda for me. It’s just so good. The Minish Cap is in my top five 2D Zeldas.
Four Swords Adventures is still a very charming game that I’ll play through solo once every half decade or so.
Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks still land themselves near the bottom of my tier list twelve years later. Triforce Heroes is the bottom.
It’s eerily similar to how the Paper Mario series went for me: the first three were great to good, the latter three were… certainly games.
