To preface this, I like PLA (8/10 imo). I used to believe that an overhaul in this style was the only way to modernise the series. Then I played Dragon Quest 11. Like Pokémon, it has a rigid turn based combat system and extreme linear world design, and yet it never once felt dated due to how polished everything was, the amount of personality in the designs of enemies, the creativity behind some of the environments, and a basic story and characters being elevated by sheer charm. Whilst changing a formula from the ground up can be a great approach (see BoTW), it isn’t always necessary. Sometimes all a series needs is a renovation rather than a reconstruction.

I want to like it, but I really cannot put up with the first few hours. Only 1 party member with basic attacks, and you need to grind repeatedly (at least in my experience).

Next console releases holiday 2024, Mario Kart 9 and Metroid Prime 4 as the big launch titles.

Everyone complaining about this like it’s replacing a mainline entry. This should be 90% developed by Koei Tecmo, whilst IS is doing their own thing.

@Dr_Lugae It’s a lot more complicated than that. Pokémon Go has increased brand recognition to greater than it was in the GBA and DS eras, and the Switch has a much larger install base than the 3DS, as well as having a healthier ecosystem than pretty much any previous Nintendo handheld. These will have all contributed to higher sales. Almost all 1st party Switch games are among the best performing in their series, regardless of quality. The increased sales have less to do with the quality of the games and more to do with the system they’re on, as more users + more hype = more people willing to try new series they know little about.

Interesting that Lets Go maintained viewership much better than the games with larger peaks.

@Varkster S/M are my favourites and were widely praised upon initial release, but many fans have started panning them since. They definitely have a lot of flaws, such as long unskippable cutscenes and even more linear design than normal, but I like them because they are probably the most unique entries, and also have the strongest sense of theming.
The reason the have higher sales is probably 1) They launched on Wednesday rather than Friday, and perhaps more importantly, 2) They released less than half a year after Pokémon Go, whilst the craze was still ongoing.

Probably just Pokémon. It’s good so far. Far from the best game I’ve ever played, with plenty of flaws, but I’m still enjoying myself.

Actually, yes, I think that all Pokémon games GBA onwards have been severely underpowered for the hardware they’re on (compare RSE to Minish Cap for example).

Just because the game is good, and I’m glad it is, doesn’t mean the complaints about the graphics are unfounded. Even if it doesn’t majorly impact enjoyment, the visuals are still inexcusably bad for a modern AAA release. The overall quality of the game doesn’t excuse it from criticism of its flaws.

The Zora swimming and reworked boss fight are a shame, but they added:
Gyro aiming
Save anytime
Reworked Bomber’s Notebook
Fishing Minigame
Improved song of double time
Reshuffled item placements to make more sense
More minor QoL
If you played the original, maybe you were a little disappointed, but for a player like me who first experienced it on 3DS, I would take all of these QoL over being able to swim fast without holding down a button.

The divine beast are separate maps. They won’t load in until the story cutscene is triggered, or you quick travel to them.

@Grumblevolcano The first proper Bowser’s Fury trailer released on the exact same date last year, I believe, and we still got a February direct.

If they really were being cancelled, then why only pull the digital version. If they were being forced to stop selling the game, surely they would have to stop producing the physical board game as well?

It’s not “cancelling” or “censorship” if they made the decision on their own, and there’s no evidence to say there was any third party involved. It may be a stupid decision, but you all need to get a grip and stop treating everything like a conspiracy.

I guess this balances out the amiibo, but I, perhaps unpopularity, think M!Byleth looks much better. The Byleth armour design has a lot of weird elements, and these are just exaggerated in the female version of the costume. Also, her eyes are twice as large as every other character in the game, and I think that just looks bad.

As a new player, I am confused by everyone here and in other parts of the internet saying that a 200 hour game is offensively short.

It would need to maintain its current pace, but Nintendo’s used up most of their arsenal by now. Unless there’s a price drop or major revision, I think sales are going to start slowing down.

@AlexSora89 I never ended up getting the DLC, but Byleth actually made me come closer than any other character.

Spelunky 2 is fantastic (but I played the PC version).
My best run is only about 2/3 through, but according to steam achievements, that’s still above average!

Seeing Xenoblade 2 above 1 saddens me, but is an opinion I respect.
Not seeing X at all is what gets me. Best in the series, but it’s existence seems to be largely ignored.

@sketchturner @Jmjfrank Its hard to tell when zoomed out, but there are uniquely modelled eyes and eyebrows, this was 100% intentional. To see for yourself, screenshot and increase brightness and contrast (I don’t know how to post the image I have).

Why is redoing the Kanto designs a higher priority than getting out the Gen 4 shirts whilst the remakes are relevant?

Desinwise, most of these are monstrosities, and yet the art style is perfectly replicated even down to the shading.

I haven’t tried lava, but I have pushed them into a river, and that also instantly kills them.

Isn’t it already implied that all time lords are bisexual because they don’t have the same perception of gender due to how they can change sex upon regeneration?

I’m fairly certain that BOTW’s lava is actually water with a “death layer” on the top that only affects Link. I believe this is also how the poison river in Mario Sunshine works.

@MegaVel91 If they want it to sell, why wouldn’t they make it look as good as possible in the prerelease rather than relying on “pleasant surprise”?

I really want this to be good, but GameFreaks track record is hard to ignore. The graphics are still poor, but more worrying is the fact this carefully scripted clip is the closest we’ve had to live gameplay. The game comes out in a month and it feels like we barely know anything. I’m not optimistic but hope to be proven wrong.

C'mon guys, regardless of your overall opinions of these games, you have to agree that there is no good reason not to have online matchmaking.

I think you're missing Bayonetta 3 in 2017, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance in 2018.
