Sega has registered a new 'Sega NFT' trademark in Japan despite the company being seemingly undecided on its future plans.
The trademark, spotted by VGC, was applied for in December 2021 and published today by the Japan Patent Office. It includes an image that appears to be a new logo for Sega's NFT business.
The company initially revealed its intention to launch NFT content in April last year, but comments put forward in a recent management meeting suggested that Sega was open to backing down on its plans. In the meeting, it was stated that Sega "would like to try out various experiments and we have already started many different studies and consideration," but acknowledged negative feedback from fans, saying that it could scrap the plans if they're "perceived as simple money-making".
It's worth noting that the newly spotted trademark was applied for before these comments were made, and that the main takeaway from Sega's meeting was that "nothing is decided". As VGC notes, the trademark could therefore suggest that Sega is planning to continue with its plans for now while keeping one eye on further fan reaction.
In related news, well-known video game voice actor Troy Baker caused controversy earlier today by partnering with an NFT firm and sharing a possibly misjudged comment on social media. They're not going away any time soon, are they?

Can’t say I’m surprised tbh
NFT is a new enemy in gaming industry.
Tell to them we hate NFT.
I like how we have an NFT article tag.
Sega NFT?
Sega, No Freaking Thanks
So maybe i don't fully understand NFTs.
As far as I know, there are literally no benefits to NFTs for the actual end user.
...unless being able to claim "I am the TRUE owner of this .jpg file" is somehow valuable. or even meaningful.
What I don't understand is...why are all the gaming companies jumping immediately at the opportunity to involve themselves with something that literally does not and cannot have any value or meaning? It's not just one crazy company, it's all of them. Which means that this is something that is actually beneficial in some way. But I don't even see what kind of product it can even manifest as...?
@EarthboundBenjy It’s ‘beneficial’ to corporations because it makes them money. Because people are idiots. Of course they’d jump on it, the whole thing’s a big scam.
What? they don't give a Ring? What a surprise! 😃
Can't wait for them to sell sonic's shoes, totally worth every penny!
Look out, Vic Chaos (pronounced CHOW-SE) apparently works at SEGA now.
"...but hear me out. What if you were actually the PRIMARY OWNER of your very own Sonic fursona fanart"
I’d they actually go through with this I’m never buying any of their crap again
@Desrever
Primary owner of a digital receipt claiming ownership of something somewhere on the net within an indistinct Blockchain someone somewhere started. no actual (digital) copy included
@EarthboundBenjy
You can't prove anything with an NFT as it's not officially accepted as such, as anyone enywhere could start their own Blockchain with the same claim of ownership, which again, isn't officially accepet as such (no copyright...)
The patent was placed in December, which is before they said they were hesitant, they are probably just covering themselves.
Well hopefully fingers crossed
Don't worry. This whole thing is a bubble. Anytime in the future, it will burst, and NFTs will go back to being just another fad that people and corporations will eventually avoid.
Companies get a lot of heat for NFT announcements so they back off, but only publicly. They still want the scam money from NFTs but they also don't want the negative publicity. It's a gold rush mentality and everyone wants to get on board before they're left behind (or, before the pyramid scheme collapses, you want to be on the top) So they'll keep working on them silently, hoping public perception will change or they'll find a way to make it work.
NFTs are basically just scams. Even more than microtransactions were / are.
@Dethmunk That's what I think as well. It's like how various tech brands get patents issued for all sorts of tech implementations, but we don't see tangible products arising from them.
Well, the trademark was probably pending, so this doesn't mean anything yet. But i'm pretty sure that the suits want that stuff out ASAP.
Oh, look. It's an upside down Triforce logo.
No, not that one. I mean the arcade board made by SEGA, Nintendo and Namco in 2003.
Seeing stuff like NFTs being pushed so hard by every game company makes me lose all faith in the industry. Gamings just become a massive scam hobby, with companies trying to squeeze every last drop of cash out of its consumers all while they pump out mediocre, half finished games.
There's very few companies left that I haven't lost faith in, but I'm sure they will eventually show their true colors too. Nintendo makes some terrible decisions, but at least they typically stay true to their original values and make consistently good games. The day Nintendo stops making quality products is the day I quit buying new games. They're really the only company I still buy products from.
I'll just end up playing old games on emulators, which I pretty much do now anyways lol
@EarthboundBenjy from what I understand it is considered an “investment” because the price of the NFT can go up or down
They're not doing it. It was a long time ago.
Sega likes easy money, dopes and suckers. None of this is beneath them
Denny’s Applebee’s Max is the premier place in town for people to eat. But you are not seeing your true potential.
With NFTs you can give your customers unique digital goods on the blockchain, so much more than just food. How about the Applebee, huh? He’s got a little hat and a mustache. And this is Chicken Fried Steak. He ain’t no normal chicken, he’s wearin’ a bra!
Lots of people eat Denny’s and Applebee’s. And lots of people know about NFTs! Right here in the middle, you know what this is?
People who eat Denny’s Applebee’s and know about NFTs… that’s your target audience, baby!
Modern gaming is dead.
Yeah yeah, screw NFTs etc... Does anyone else find that SEGA eye image off-putting? If that's a reflection of what the eye is seeing, then they're looking at a mirrored SEGA logo. That's all I can think about when I see it, lol.
Please people dont trust them. Sega stopped the nft thing when they got backlash. This is pure misinformation.
