With Metroid Dread already looking like a mighty success, both in terms of its critical reception and early sales data, it perhaps comes as no surprise that the game's popularity appears to have kickstarted a flurry of purchases across the entire series.
Metroid fever has been running high ever since Dread's initial reveal, with plenty of fans revisiting their old favourite games in the run-up to Dread's launch, and series newcomers wanting to check it out for the very first time. Indeed, when we published an article discussing the best Metroid games to play before Dread, a high level of engagement suggested that fans were feeling ready to devour the entire series.
With Dread now out in the wild, it seems fans are doing just that – where they can, at least. Not all Metroid games are available on modern systems, but those that are have been climbing the eShop charts. As spotted by Shinesparkers, four Metroid games are currently in the Wii U's top ten, with Fusion being number one, and Metroid: Samus Returns has hit the 3DS' top three.
Interest in the franchise is certainly at the highest point we've seen in a number of years, which hopefully bodes well for the upcoming release of Metroid Prime 4. Incidentally, the last time we heard anything about that game was during Dread's reveal, where Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi said "we're working hard" on its development.

@nkarafo A Nintendo news website reporting news related to a Nintendo franchise shortly after a new game in the Nintendo franchise has been released.
This goes to show the importance of getting these games onto modern systems.
NES Metroid and Super Metroid being on Nintendo Switch Online isn't good enough, the Switch needs to be able to play the GBA titles and the Prime trilogy too!
Also interesting to see that Metroid II, the Game Boy version didn't chart, but I guess that's only natural with Samus Returns on the 3DS.
Wii U's not dead! I wonder if the NES and SNES games in the NSO are more played right now too.
@nkarafo I mean it's this week's big release + first new metroid game in ages, so yeah?
Here's hoping the game is successful enough to show Nintendo they don't need to wait another 10+ years for another 2D title.
@Trikeboy True, but there is a thing like too much
now imagine if Nintendo (and this is a wild idea, hear me out) re-released the Metroid Prime games on the Switch.
wouldn't that be wild?
it's almost as if people WANT to play more Metroid.
This is awesome!
I hope Konami sees this and gives MercurySteam another go at Castlevania! The LoS saga was good but they could make it great!
That way the sales of the older Castlevania games could be boosted as well!
@Trikeboy Yes, I know but still. SO MANY POSTS about it! I like the game very very much but I don't like that Nintendo Life has so many posts about it. In other Nintendo games, it was quiet. In this particularly, the promotion has been reached over the top! Yes, I know, I will not click if I am not interested and end of story. Easy solution.
Topping the Wii U eShop charts in 2021 means 5 copies sold lol
How many units do you need to sell to climb to those spots on the WiiU and 3DS? Sadly I don’t believe that more than few thousand if not few hundreds
But glad that Metroid find success, will probably pick it up sometime
Hopefully this success will mean Nintendo takes Metroid more seriously as a main franchise again. And maybe even starts to put more stock in some of it's other long forgotten franchises.
I mean...I can hope.
Good to hear, the series definately deserves more attention.
I would absolutely eat up a HD rerelease of Other M.
I'm glad to hear that Metroid Dread is doing well. I'm really hoping that Kirby and the Forgotten Land does well too next year because some of these other franchises need tons of love too.
I was one of them. Never interested in Metroid before but Dread is amazing (and so, so hard!!!!) so bought the old games on 3DS & Wii u VC
@nkarafo Funny on a Nintendo website eh.
This is great for Metroid but all I can think of is that Nintendo really needs to make these available on the Switch.
@CharlieGirl They probably cant, insiders already said they didn't plan to for various reasons, but the most alarming is how on earth do you convert metroid prime corruption to the old prime controls? MP1 and 2 would be easy since they were on NGC, but corruption would have to be completely reworked on certain boss fights, rebalanced, some puzzles changed, abilities like grapple beam being reworked and the puzzles involved with it, etc.
It sounds easy on paper but it wouldn't even be a port at that point, it'd be a remake/re-release.
I'm kind of surprised they didn't release some of these on Switch as part of the Dread hype. Seems like easy money. But Nintendo's gonna do Nintendo.
Happy times. The future of the series seems secure for the first time in a long while.
I'm willing to sacrifice some blood for the Prime trilogy on switch.
Not my own blood though, but still.
Be nice to have zero mission and fusion on switch
So I don't need to go back to wii u and 3ds
@nkarafo These articles are a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the sheer volume of Animal Crossing and Pokemon SW/SH articles that were posted when those games released. Dread pales in comparison to those haha
"Virtual Console doesn't sell."
@PickledKong You mean Aria of Sorrow? Because Dawn is the DS title
Or it is on Wii U? I ask because I do not own a Wii U and I do not know what is available there from the Castlevania games.
Now imagine if there was a Metroid Advance Collection (a'la Castlevania) where we could go buy the GBA games (and maybe even Samus Returns?) to catch up on the series. Imagine!
Instead, I'm over here sending roms to people because they only have a 3DS or Switch and used GBA carts are overpriced as hell.
How can Konami make better decisions than Nintendo? Why does Nintendo despise making their back-library easily available? I'd love to throw money at them to get these games on a 3DS or Switch
Castlevania had a mostly gba collection released on Switch recently, Metroid now has a Prime Trilogy AND a gba-3ds-snes collection that would sell very well IF they release it on Switch. All they have to do, is get it done.
A rising tide lifts all boats.
Nice that there are still interest in the franchise. Just hope nobody took that awful Kotaku article about pirating Metroid Dread too seriously or else it'll be another 8 more years until we see another new 2D Metroid again.
I would be tempted by the Prime trilogy if it came to switch
Too bad they aren’t available for Switch. Nintendo needs a universal e-store.
@Mando44646 Not everyone in life is the same. You could also ask why Nintendo could only make new titles for its popular franchise but not Konami. Just cause one company did something doesn't mean Nintendo had to do the same. It's also likely they had no interest to do it at the moment. Nothing wrong with that. No company is better than another, it's just the way they are offering. Konami doesn't had the resource and money to make a new entry unlike Nintendo so to help them get interest that's why they release the collection, Nintendo doesn't need to do that as interest are already there so no need to release the old games until the new one got its fair share of support. All they need to do now is keep the games coming.
@moodycat playing the game since Friday, I find the positive reception to be very explicable
Let's not kid ourselves into thinking the Wii U chart means anything...
The time has come for a Zero Mission, Super Metroid and Fusion triple pack on the Switch eshop.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I mean...sure?
My problem is that Nintendo will sue the pants off of fans for making roms available before they'll use that time and money to instead just sell those same games on a modern platform. They despise gamers who want to play their old games
I'm doing a new playthrought of Zero Mission on my good old WiiU, just to show it to my kids. I've got those games till day one, but still a pleasure to play them.
The GBA emulation was really good, on WiiU : the ability to play it on the gamepad, or on the TV, to activate a nice filter to smooth the picture (not usually fan of those things, but in that case, I find that the effect just works : Golden Sun, for example, is a delight to play on TV, like this) and all the instructions manuals properly scanned, included in the game to consult them offline... It was really great.
Cant' wait to play Dread at Christmas xD
A GBA collection (similar to what Konami did for Castlevania) would seem like a no-brainer for the Switch along with a Prime Trilogy collection.
I was one of those who picked up Fusion. I've never played it before. Still haven't finished it but enjoyed the first couple of hours. This makes me want to finish the set and pick up Zero Mission too! And, you know, actually play Super Metroid and the Prime Trilogy for the first time....
We need Fusion and Zero Mission on the Switch ASAP.
@chardir I’ll guess they are remaking zero mission with the dread engine to be released at full price. As a result they don’t want to make the gba or snes games more accessible since people would then be tired of Metroid or have played it already and can’t justify the price. They got away with a full priced links awakening remake simply because so many people hadn’t played it because it came out forever ago. I’m sure when the zero mission remake comes out Nintendo hopes that they can do even better than links awakening with all the Metroid hype.
@nkarafo @Trikeboy Nintendo fan comes to a Nintendo fan’s website’s comments section to leave a comment about a Nintendo related game shortly after Nintendo fan website posts about it. 🤷♂️
Look I’m just calling it how it is.
Really cool to see Metroid series taking flight again. Or perhaps it’s really cool to see it finally take flight? Anyway- I thoroughly enjoyed Dread and I’m just saying, Metroid Prime 4 has some MASSIVE shoes to fill. Mercury Steam set the bar HIGH AF.
Just imagine the numbers if F-zero got a modern sequel?
Wii U is awesome!
I play fusion and zero mission on my GBAsp, it is actually in much better condition than my switch, due to the switch's terrible build quality. I would love a HD Samus returns on Switch or 2.5d remake of one of the classics, something that utilizes the switch hardware, but I don't want to play GBA games without a D-Pad, on some lame rental scheme using a flimsy switch. There are so many better ways to play these older games than on Switch.
@sixrings - "I’ll guess they are remaking zero mission with the dread engine to be released at full price"
Just out of curiosity, why Zero Mission specifically?
I mean, to be fair, reaching number one on the Wii U chart probably doesn't mean that much (for all we know, it was just 50 people) and I'm pretty sure the Metroid games have always done well there, but even so, the idea of Dread inspiring people to dig up their Wii U and buy the older games seems a bit odd to me (especially Super, since that's already on Switch atm).
On another note, I agree with others that Fusion and Samus Returns at least probably should've been re-released on Switch, as this game is a direct follow up to those two, and Fusion at least shouldn't be too hard to bring over.
@sixrings Yeah, I guess that's likely. But zero mission is already a remake, and original Metroid is on NSO. Nintendo are certainly inconsistent with how they handle their back catalogue.
@FullMetalWesker I actually played through Fusion on my Wii U specifically because Dread was coming out. (I got it ages ago so I'm not part of the chart figures)
I bought and played ZM and Fusion for the first time on WiiU this year. I also replayed Samus Returns but I already had that.
It's unreal how out of touch Nintendo are from their playerbase. And how they failed to port all Metroid games, either as a collection or single games before Dread was released to the Switch. This has to be one of the worst decisions for easy money that they didn't seem to have the intellect to anticipate. It was so obvious Metroid Dread would be a blockbuster, yet they let down their players and shareholders (which they seem to care the most of). I for one bought what was available at the Wii U shop that I didn't own already, but unfortunately Samus returns is not available there and I'm not buying an overpriced GBA and cartridge just for one game.
You need to count Wii U Prime Trilogy sales when comparing sales numbers with Dread.
This is awesome! I hope the momentum stays strong for a good while so that Nintendo sees how much people love Metroid. This is a franchise that needs to remain a mainstay since there aren't too many Nintendo games that are being made today that are catered to a more advanced player market. And with this franchise's success at the moment, hopefully Nintendo will consider reviving other dormant franchises that have long needed a new release. One can only hope.
@chardir - I mean, if I'm being honest, I did too, but to be fair, that was only Fusion; these figures are listing Zero Mission, the Prime Trilogy, and even Super (for some reason), so it's clear people aren't just doing what I did and getting caught up on the relevant entries in the series; they're actually using it as a reason to try out other games as well (not that that's a bad thing, just...using the Wii U seems an odd way to do it).
Still seems nonsensical to me that at least all the other 2D games aren't already on the system in some form.
Prime Trilogy should be on Switch. It’s easier to find PS3/360 ports than Wii ports on Switch.
@FullMetalWesker I guess they will release zero mission in the dread engine because that’s the first in the series. I get it’s a remake. But if it sells well then they port Metroid 2. Then super Metroid. Then fusion. We could get a port every two years or so until they run out of games. All while simultaneously dropping the prime remaster, prime 4 and whatever comes after. Metroid wouldn’t be niche product anymore.
I really need access to the GBA titles on Switch. Not touching Dread until I can get my hands on Fusion.
@chardir maybe there is a reason gameboy and gameboy advance didn’t make NSO. Could the links awakening team be remaking the rest of the gameboy Zelda games? Or maybe they want to release a game boy classic before dropping the games.
@IGN_Commenter I’m begging for a Strikers, donkey Kong returns and punch out wii port.
If only those dummies at Nintendo would put all those games on Switch, they’d make even more money! I thought they liked money???
Next stop: starfox?
@Moistnado ive just swapped my joycon shells out for some retro snes style ones. It also swaps out the left cons buttons for a Dpad. Absolutely amazing for playing the snes games with.
As someone who never owned a Game Boy Advance, I'm still waiting to play Metroid Zero Mission & Fusion (Hunters & Samus Returns too but that's DS and beyond).
Was hoping Nintendo would allow an easy way to play them and get caught up story-wise prior to Metroid Dread on Switch... thus my hope for the much speculated Game Boy Line Nintendo Switch Online App addition I'm still hoping for.
As such I'm actually less interested and less inclined to play Dread before doing so. Guess I'll keep waiting and hoping Nintendo does the aforementioned.
... Wun can only hope.
Hopefully Metroid's success will be compared to Mario and Zelda one day.
@Araquanid well they made skyward sword work so I guess it’s possible. I don’t think it’d get the sales of Zelda tho.
@chiptoon I’m with you on that the one!
@Kidfunkadelic83 I got one too! But we are actually building a better console ourselves at this point.
@Moistnado 😂 this is true. Its funny when you think the switch doesn't even have analog triggers. Id love to get a racing game on the switch but i just dont know how it would play without them.
Nintendo is plain stupid for not covering the bases by releasing games that are crutial for people to get the full gist of Metroid Dread! The least they could have done was releasing Samus Returns from 3DS on Switch. How can a newcommer understand the full picture without playing Zero Mission and Fusion! They need to release some 2D Metroid pack ideally with ZM Samus Returns, Super Metroid and Fusion on one cartridge. Why lose so much money by letting people search for other means to buy those games????? Feels like the management of Nintendo are people who do not understand gaming and pretend like ROMs dont exist. These absolutely insane decisions cost them so much money! Nintendo WAKE UP!
How likely do you believe Ninty's thinking about doing a "Metroid 1-4 Collection" on the Switch now that this is happening?
Nintendo’s reaction to this won’t be to make another 2D Metroid it will be to let Sakamoto make another Other M and/ Other M HD, just like how BOTW’s success gave us Skyward Sword HD and a untitled Zelda game using BOTW’s aesthetics that seems to mostly be about puzzles on sky islands.
