If you have ever wanted to see Nintendo's Metroid series get adapted to the big screen, you're not alone.
During a recent interview with CNET, Metroid Dread producer Yoshio Sakamoto - who originally worked on the series as a designer - voiced his own interests in seeing Samus in cinema. He finds the idea of it "very interesting" and hopes it could one day become a "reality".
CNET: Speaking of the recent Super Mario movie announcement, a Metroid movie would be interesting. I have no idea who'd be cast as Samus.
Sakamoto: So that is something very interesting. Personally, I hope that it does become a reality someday.
As mentioned, Nintendo and Illumination are currently working on the Super Mario animated movie - due out next year. It will star Chris Pratt as Mario, in case you missed it. Beyond this, Nintendo says it has more media projects in the works and is also looking into other animations.
Would you like to see the Metroid series turned into an official Nintendo animation or movie? How about something like a live-action series? Leave your own thoughts down in the comments.

I think an animated series a-la Castlevania would be awesome. A live action movie detailing her origin, with Ridley the central villain focus would work well I believe as well.
It would make a perfect horror/action movie, But if they were to do it I would want them to go all out with the theme of metroid, And no live action TBH. (Not saying Live action couldn't work)
Brie Larson is likely polishing her helmet right now.
Edit: This is a light hearted comment based on the actress’s prior interest in the role. I’ve only seen her in Captain Marvel, but what I don’t need is an inbox full of hyperbolic attacks on the woman. Don’t like her? Fine. Please comment but don’t tag me. I’m not interested in tearing a stranger down for existing. I will block you if you tag me directly to rant about why you hate her. Don’t need to indulge in that kind of negativity. There are worse people than some actress that plays video games.
Tbh I hope a Metroid movie never happens as online discourse about how Samus' character is portrayed can already be extremely controversial and I don't want that to get even more toxic. I don't mind Brie Larson but just imagine the vitriol if she were cast. There's no way a movie could please every kind of Metroid fan. But if they can prove me wrong I'll eat my words.
I got spoiled with Advent Children so I would personally love a CGI Metroid movie. Doesn't really need to be live action. Even a Zelda CGI movie would be fantastic.
Can't wait to see Chris Pratt voice Samus
That's just silly, Metroid was based on the movie Aliens (the James Cameron one).
the entire story would make a killer high production tv series, there is too much content to squeeze into a film.
@Ryu_Niiyama brie larson... Yeah right... Only thing she's been good on was Scott pilgrim. I would like Jessica beil as Samus if a live action was realized.
Angelina Jolie as Samus?
@Kilamanjaro oh.... well....
Metroid as a move and television series would be fantastic.
Weird thought: Peter Chung directing it, as in the same one who created Aeon Flux.
@AnnoyingFrenzy 100% agree, it would be awesome to see the Metroid universe grow thru Samus's perspective. Plus getting to connect with the Chozo (civilization, culture, and hierarchy). To the Space Pirates, how they came to be, and so many more characters / worlds to explore.
Metroid could very well lead a precedent, like Farscape did on SciFi many years ago
I would love an anime movie aka Guyver style action.
If they made a Metroid movie, it needs to have a part where Samus infinitely bomb jumps up to a high ledge.
"What is Alien ?"
@BloodNinja
And don't forget the part where Samus stands in front of a pipe and kills the same bird monster over and over. That's an extremely important part of her story and her journey after all.
It definitely could work in the horror or suspense genres. There have been plenty of successful films with minimal casts.
Gravity, Hush and The Red Turtle are the first three that came into my head.
However I don't think it's been done with a pre existing property and not sure Nintendo are brave enough to go down that route with their movies.
Yes and no, Other M got slated from the diehards from taking metroid lore in a different direction. And personally I love it. So making a movie not so sure.
If she was a couple decades younger, I could see Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine in Star Trek) as Samus Aran. She was actually pretty bad*** in the Picard series.
But they could digitally de-age her, if need be, possibly by using deepfake technology. We've come a long way since Rogue One, of course, so it is entirely possible to de-age an actor and make it look realistic.
I'm all for it, with a couple of caveats.
1: Not live-action, please God, not live-action. If anyone were to try and make a "live-action" Metroid film, it'd be 99.9% CGI anyway. CGI sets, CGI creatures, the suit(s) would almost certainly be mostly digital (same way they do Iron Man in the MCU films now), one of the few things that would be live-action would be the inserts of Samus' face. At that point, you're just making a CGI movie, so just do it animated form the beginning. I'll take CGI, but I'd really, really, REALLY prefer hand-drawn
2: It needs to be almost entirely silent. I certainly wouldn't mind dialogue now and then, but Samus isn't (and shouldn't be) much of a talker. She's a person of show, don't tell. One of the absolute best things about Metroid Dread is how the game uses animation to let Samus' body language speak for her and one of the key aspects of the series as a whole is how it allows music and environmental design to set the tone. If you have a Metroid movie where Samus is constantly talking, whether it's giving exposition or making quips, it's just going to feel like a betrayal of character.
3. If it does end up animated and a western production and they don't get Genndy Tartakovsky, then why even bother? Go back and watch Samurai Jack or check out his latest brilliant/brutal show, Primal, and tell me he wouldn't absolutely f'ing KILL it. If it's a Japanese production, I don't know, Trigger or Production I.G immediately spring to mind, but I'm sure there are plenty of other houses that would jump at the opportunity and do amazing work.
Chris Pratt will voice Samus in the Metroid movie
@Axelay71 We didn't hate Other M for taking things in a different direction, we hated it for taking things in a stupid direction, but primarily for turning Samus from the most badass bounty hunter in the galaxy that takes sh*t from no one into this docile, subservient child that needs to please daddy at all costs. The gameplay in Other M is solid enough, it's the narrative and characterization of Samus people have a problem with, and for good reason.
@GeneJacket again your opinion, I play for the gameplay and don't get over excited about the narrative and get upset about it. Yes Dread is true to form in my opinion, buts that's a different story. Regards to a movie I rest my case from my first post.
@EarthboundBenjy @BloodNinja If she doesn't shoot every do she goes into I'm not watching.
The pilot show would be landing / crashing on a planet and losing her suit and all her gear. Every episode could be about her aquiring a power up with the Christmas special about her being totally lost and unsure where to go. The actress will be required to keep her helmet on and have zero lines of dialogue.
I would love a Metroid movie just as long as its not like Other M
Now that could be good, if it’s dark and 15-18 rated
Not live-action, please! In the Name of God, don't do this! Only CGI! Don't torture gamers like Uwe Boll did it with his horrible, awful movies.
Metroid is my favorite Nintendo series after the Super Mario platformers but I really don't think it needs a movie just like Mario didn't need another movie.
@NoTinderLife
Except for Ridley and the lonely feelings of isolation?
@Ryu_Niiyama Haha, was thinking the same thing.
I don't get the aversion to a live action Metroid film... Metroid was heavily influenced by two fantastic live action sci-fi movies, I'd honestly prefer a live action Metroid in the same spirit as Alien/Aliens over an animated movie personally. Of course, you'd also need someone who respects the source material for it to be good, but it's not like it being animated automatically means you get a higher chance of having a Metroid fan in charge.
@Ryu_Niiyama Brie Larson? No thanks.
If it’s a Western production, be it “live action” (i.e. 99% CGI) or animated, make no mistake, it will be garbage for reasons already discussed at length (and mentioned by some of the commenters above).
Irrespective of quality and ideological neutrality, I don’t think Metroid would in any way benefit from a film adaptation. Metroid is at its best as a video game series by its very design. DOOM is one of my favourite franchises of all time, but I see nothing of value in the movies, and if anything, are a stain on the franchise’s otherwise almost flawless legacy.
Metroid in the cinemas? Automatically, that would draw comparisons. Just imagine if Ridley Scott or James Cameron were chosen to work on this.
@Moistnado ok, good for you.
@Axelay71 I loved Other M too. Problem isn't with the game, it's with people reading way too much into of the characterization of a videogame avatar. Also people imagining things that were not even in the game like her being a "docile, subservient child that needs to please daddy at all costs". It is nothing like what happened in the actual game. Samus was badass in Other M, and besides that, it doesn't matter, I don't play games for realistic dramatic representations of avatars.
@Daniel36 I know right?! As soon as I read it I imagined her in some sort of training montage and opening up a little tony stark vault full of varia suit prototypes.
@Moistnado I'm with you mate all the way, personally I don't see that much story in the metroid series anyway. And yes she was badass in other M. I don't play Mario titles for there indepth story, it's the amazing level design and gameplay.
I would love to see a Metroid movie. Who would be a good casting for the role of Samus? 🤔
We all know full well that Scarlett Johansson would get cast.
Something more akin to the Mandalorian would probably be more ideal. Episodic in nature and seeing her take on a different mission in each but with an overarching storyline running through it. It wouldn't make great viewing to have her isolated on a planet by herself like we see in each game either. But Zelda will probably get a movie/series first anyway.
Chris Pratt would be perfect as Samus.
I'm all for it but they need to animate like with castlevania not live action these days everything CGI and takes away the excitement.
How about we stop adapting every franchise into different forms of media?
Can we let a video game just be a video game? Is that too much to ask?
@Zag_Man 100% agree. Metroid is vague. There's lore embedded if you want to look for it, but I prefer going into Metroid with uncomfortable ambiguity. Samus is on a mission. The world that once was is no more. What's replaced it is gross and ugly and wants to kill her. That's all I need.
In some way, narrative ruins that.
I bet we will see it as long as the Mario and Kong movies are successful followed by a Yoshi film maybe a Wario in a Mario sequel and more ultimately cumulating in a Avengers style team up Smash Bros movie
Yes to live action! Stick to the aesthetics of Prime and cast Charlize Theron!
Theres only ONE Samus and its QUEEN BRIE !!💪
Yeah, hopefully someday. If Mario and maybe DK are having films why not Metroid? A film Alien and it's lead Ellen Ripply practically created Metroid and Samus. A movie could be full circle. Maybe it could be a fusion of the manga and game. An origin combined with her mission. Bring in her parents to establish the world, Ridley to tear Samus down, her training with the Chozo to build her up, and than full on mission to and make Samus a woman of few words, not no words or all words. It might be cliche and a somewhat inconsistent but I bet it would be a more compelling watch than the full movie being hour and a half footage of a game where it's only the mission and nothing else.
The most EPIC METROID MOVIE poster of all time starring Academy Award Winning Badass BRIE LARSON, by
BOSSLOGIC
🤯
Omg this would be a dream come true. Ever since Boss Logic's METROID poster starring Brie Larson I'v been longing, yearning and praying for this to be a reality
Samus doing one-arm pull ups and one-arm push ups just like Brie IRL would be most epic meta!! Hell she could literally climb a mountain no cgi required . LETS GOOO NINTENDO🤩
@Snatcher Exactly. Everywhere she runs I need to see arm pumping for those extra frames!
@EarthboundBenjy LOL, thanks for the belly laugh!
a live-action TV series for the Metroid franchise would be perfect.
Live action Metroid, Jim Henson Muppet Starfox, and an animated F-Zero.
I say this as a big Metroid fan, but if you shine too much of a light on any one of Metroid's plot elements, it falls apart. Why would the Chozo make metroids a lifeform instead of a vaccine? Why is Samus as a lone person the only one qualified to go on these missions? She's a bounty hunter, but we never see her get paid or cut deals? A lot of the story elements work because we aren't meant to focus on the details and they motivate the gameplay, but the moment we flip that, it's all going to fall apart. That's why Other M is such a garbage fire; Other M isn't the problem, Metroid's story has always been vague and beside the point.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Oh God No!!!
I hate Hollywood in general but she stands out as a particular piece of garbage. If Nintendo were to make a Metroid film then it should be entirely CGI, have no Hollywood voice actors, (stay clear of California in general) and keep her helmet on for at least 95% of the time.
@Noxide ok, good for you.
A Metroid Visions series would be great I think, but I do not know about live action. Why hire the best talent to play Samus when, if she speaks, the characterization and the actor are likely going to be criticized? There is more freedom in animation, and have it arranged to hit a streaming service rather than have the spotlight of the big screen. Live action too I feel forces the movie to be centered around Samus. An animated series may be able to be flexibly diverse and have other perspectives for storytelling i.e. Mawkin Chozo tribe and Luminoth. The series is bigger than Samus.
Oh dear, im getting other m flashbacks
Usually, i'm rather kind hearted, but i do hope this wish isn't granted.
Other M showed how easily Samus as a character can be utterly ruined, while Dread showed that Samus is at her best if she doesn't even talk and let body language do the work.
So no, no more videogame movies. They never work.
@Einherjar Agreed. So much of what makes Metroid great is the feeling of being isolated and in the unknown. The more they explain, the more disappointed we become; the answers will never be satisfying. Literally no one has seen the Star Wars movies and been satisfied by what's underneath Darth Vader's or Boba Fett's helmets.
I maybe wouldn't go as far as to say video games shouldn't be adapted into movies, but the question of if a game is right for the big screen should definitely be asked. It's never going to happen, though, because the vast majority of games aren't right for the medium and damn near 100% of these projects are greenlit because somebody sees dollar signs, not "this story needs to be told".
@WeltraumDreamer Castlevania didn't flop.
Make it in the style of Netflix's Castlevania as some others stated above.
If it absolutely has to be live action then the actress needs to be somewhat tall. "Elizabeth Debicki" is over 6 feet tall and may be a good fit. If it has to be someone better known then maybe "Blake Lively" who's 5' 10" or "Karen Gillan" who's 5' 11" and dye her red hair blonde.
Please no Brie Larson or Scarlett Johanson for the love of all that is holy.
There’s no way Sakamoto isn’t pushing for Other M HD after Skyward Sword HD so he can make sure we never get another legitimate 2D Metroid like Dread and instead get more 3D cinematic Metroids about maternal instincts, hell there’s a chance he’d use it to further derail Prime 4.
@ AlexSwitch10
When I think Metroid I don’t think nonstop petty bickering and quips.
I’d prefer animated over live-action, but a show/movie origin story based on the Metroid manga would be good.
And just “no!” to Brie Larson staring as Samus, maybe she can be Mother Brain.
Use the Dread engine and remake Fusion. Pretty please.
@PtM She alienates a large portion of her target audience with divisive rhetoric. Not a likable, or bankable celebrity.
I’d prefer it didn’t happen, but if it did, very little dialogue. Let the visuals and suspense tell the story.
@AnnoyingFrenzy So basically the films take on the manga which puts some focus on Samus's parents and training with the chozo.
@GinMiguel Yeah pretty much, its one of the few things in Metroid that hasn't been shown in the games and could work narratively for a feature length film, characters arcs and all that.
If done correctly technically the way that (most) Metroid games are constructed price very adaptable to the "Hero's journey" arc that makes for good drama. Hero does cool stuff, hero comes across new enemy or environment, power shift there hero had to adapt and overcome, hero defeats enemies be it environmental, anti hero or both. Sign me up.
I would like to see some footage of Metroid prime 4 some day.
Given the fact that most video game films suck, I am most definitely not looking forward to that day.
@Kilamanjaro lol
@Ryu_Niiyama Gal Gadot might be fun. Maybe she could be like, og green-haired Samus. What do you think?
Melissa MCCarthy will play Samus, if scientists can figure out how to get her into the suit.
@Moistnado
"I don't play games for realistic dramatic representations of avatars"
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess you're the type that skips any and all cutscenes, in which case, your opinion on the validity of a narrative is entirely moot.
@GeneJacket no, I watched all of the brilliant cutscenes and enjoyed them very much. I think it was a genuine achievement on the Wii to merge the video with the gameplay so seamlessly, especially because Wii wasn't powerful enough to render these clips in-engine. I enjoyed Samus' monologues and narration for what they were, not a key component of the gameplay, but set a nice sci-fi tone. I even watched all the clips in the movie mode after I finished the game. Samus was portrayed as tough, intelligent, caring, but it is open to interpretation, obviously. That said "docile, subservient child that needs to please daddy at all costs" is a real stretch of the imagination in interpreting the cutscenes. Your interpretation probably says more about your personal views than the actuality of the way the character was depicted on screen.
It's funny to see what a bit of a rise in popularity does since Samus Returns. Sakamoto got a similar question sent his way a few years ago on the then-new Castlevania anime on Netflix and its surge in popularity, and his answer paraphrased as "I'm not the right guy in the right mindset to have that be a thing". But now I guess he's on board for Other M 2 in the format he really seems to have wanted it to be from the get-go. Another M if you will.
I don't have any strong feelings on a movie possibility until there's actual concrete details, but I personally find it a MUCH better fit for Metroid's style to be an episodic show in the vein of Samurai Jack. Animated, of course, but that show also largely keeps its star 90% silent and kept in isolated atmospheric locations, showing its story more often than telling it.
A movie's....fine, I guess? Would be forced to be a bit more arthouse if they want to retell a main game's story.
@Tempestryke I have only ever seen the first WW movie (not a lot of love for the character) but she has the competent but reticent vibe down. She doesn’t imo emote subtle intensity which I think is needed for a woman that you only see the green visored eyes of most of the time though. That controlled tsunami feeling isn’t there. But I’m all for female action stars of any stripe since it still isn’t a go to role for women yet. (And that sucks)
@Ryu_Niiyama Those are fair points.
@JoeSooper That cant be helped. They wont please everyone no matter how much effort was put in. But they cant let fear of a few detractors hold them back from their creative endeavours if they want a movie. If every artist thought that way, they wouldn't make anything.
@Noxide You said CGI correct?
Would you be opposed to 2D animation or stop motion?
@MovieBuff
2D animation would be nice but unlikely. Same goes for Stop Motion however I think stop motion would work better for a Zelda Majora's Mask movie series.
@Noxide So you would prefer 2D than CGI?
