Update [Thu 23rd Dec, 2021 02:30 GMT]: Following on from last week, trademarks have now been filed in Canada on 17th December and Europe on 20th December for 'Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series' (via Gematsu).
Update [Sat 18th Dec, 2021 17:00 GMT]: Just months after a 'Klonoa Encore' trademark popped up in Japan, a new trademark for 'Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series' has been registered in the UK this week. You can see the full listing over on the Intellectual Property Office.

Original story [Tue 21st Sep, 2021 06:55 BST]: Back in September 2019, word spread about the possibility of the classic Namco character Klonoa returning, after Bandai Namco filed some trademarks in Japan.
Fast forward to September 2021, and the Japanese company has now gone and filed some new trademarks for "Waffuu Encore" and "1&2 Encore" in the same location. The word "encore" is what Bamco has been subtitling remasters of games (e.g. Katamari Damacy 'Encore' instead of 'Reroll' ) in Japan, in recent times.
And the word "Waffuu" - as noted by Gematsu, is the catch phrase of the series' floppy-eared protagonist. When news about Klonoa's possible return surfaced in 2019, it was the same time as a trademark appeared for Mr. Driller: DrillLand (Mr. Driller 'Encore' in Japan).
Klonoa began life in 1997 on the PlayStation and eventually showed up on some of Nintendo's platforms during the GBA and Wii generation. Would you like to see this character make a return? Leave a comment below.

The trilogy must to be completed... Even though the GBA games were great
Oh my god, please! These are some of the finest platformers out there, and ridiculously hard to find at a reasonable price.
This could be a dream announcement in my opinion 🤩
Please, I never got to play the games but my god I always wanted to, please!
HAPPY DANCE!
Loved Klonoa 1 and 2. Even bought the Wii version of Klonoa 1. Please be true.
ooooooh. Always down for more Klonoa in my life.
Pac-Man World Encore better be next.
I'm not gonna stop spamming it everywhere till it happens.
@Not_Soos
Pac-Man World 2 on Gamecube was my childhood. The OST is amazing.
I'm curious if they will be rebuilt ala Super Monkey Ball, or enhanced emulation ala 3D Mario collection on Switch? I haven't played it yet, but I'm worried Monkey Ball won't be as good as I hoped because it's rebuilt and different. I want Monkey Target to be basically just like on GameCube! Hopefully the extra stuff added, and just the basic awesomeness of the source material will keep the quality high. I've got Klonoa on Wii. Wonder if there'll be anything new, anything improved (beyond resolution and keeping the 60fps smoothness)...
@JR150 Same! I don't really have a connection to the first and third games, though I'd love a chance to finally experience them. I hear they're not as good, though. I really just want Pac-Man World 2, lol. Haunted Boardwalk will always be my favorite level, along with all the bouncing woods ones.
@Not_Soos
The first was a PS1-only game and I forgot that a third game even existed until I had already gotten my Wii.
Here's hoping they bring it back somehow.
Oh I hope so! Love the series wish the movie came out.
ABOUT. DAMN. TIME!!!!
A remastered collection of Klonoa 1 & 2, Empire of Dreams, and Dream Champ Tournament for Switch and PC would be nice.
The first one is one of my favourite platformers ever, so I'd happily get a remaster of it.
A new one would be awesome too!
I really hope the remaster is coming and it's not just some werid "trademark in case, never actually do anything with it".
Given I would prefer a new game, but any project to get back in adventure Klonoa is very much needed and appreciated!!!
This is enough to make me want to cry.
I really REALLY hope so. Love the series.
I would totally buy this. Absolutely loved the Klonoa games, especially Klonoa 2.
I'd be all over this! Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil was the first game I ever completed as a kid, it was a good summer.
Why can’t we get ridge racer HD. Rave racer HD. Or soul caliber HD.
"Fast forward to September 2021, and the Japanese company has now gone and filed some new trademarks for "Waffuu Encore"
I didn't know Klonoa was a Waifu
Sweet peas! This would be great!
I really hope a remaster collection would also contain the original version of Klonoa 1 as well as the Wii version. Also, I would buy a physical version day one. And having access to Klonoa 2 without digging up my ps2 would be awesome.
For anyone who hasnt played these games, they are ABSOLUTE GEMS. If this comes to light, it will be Klonoa's last chance. Please don't pass them up or wait for a sale. There is not a minute where these games don't shine.
I hope this is true. Namco’s been sleeping on way too many of their IPs at this point
Like Mr. Driller: Drill Land, this is one of those absolutely classic titles that MUST be accessible to a modern audience. The puzzle platforming and beautiful, melancholic story puts so many current "AAA" releases to shame.
I remember seeing Klonoa on a Playstation magazine and liking him. Unfortunately, I never played any of the Klonoa games until some years later. I liked the Wii remake of the first game and I'd love to play all of the Klonoa games on the Switch
I would love to see Klonoa remastered, especially since the games are so pricey now.
@JR150 There was a GBA version of the first game, too.
I mean, I've only wished for Klonoa remasters and new games in the series every day of my life (and that thing is 2019 being left hanging for two years drove me up the wall!), and maybe also for Klonoa in Smash (please, I'll even take a Mii costume at this point)
Echoing others, the Wii remake of Klonoa 1 is awesome, honestly I'd take a straight port of that alone for Switch and be happy. Hope something actually does come of this and maybe if there's enough interest Namco could give us a brand new Klonoa game as well.
I’m in. Loved the original games.
@Wavey84 I agree with all that you said there bar the Galaxy comparison but that doesn't take anything away from Klonoa Wii which was an "underrated" game on the system in terms of surrounding hype. Great game.
Klonoa 2 was one of my very fav PS2 games on the system, also
Klonoa on Switch would be terrific. Let’s confirm this!
This would blow my mind. If you like platformers and you haven't played these games at all.. THIS IS A MUST! These games are amazing.
Okay now it’s been registered in the U.K. as well as Japan, it’s definitely meaning something. So I’m just curious what it actually means, as in is it just a new game, a remaster or remake of the first game again, or is it a collection?
Please let this actually be released I want to try the Klonoa series out.
sadly Klonoa is not a priority for Bandai Namco, so will we never see a Klonoa game ever again released in any form.
Klonoa Collection on Switch please!!!
Klonoa is a forever hidden gem series (unfortunately)
Would like to see more Klonoa too. Played the Wii remake and Empire of Dreams this year on WiiU and they're both great.
Also "Waffuu?" I thought it was "Wahoo!" this whole time.
Never really got into Klonoa. He just seems like a poor man's Kirby, all of his abilities are just nerfed versions of Kirby's abilities without any of the quirks that make Kirby fun to play (he can absorb and spit out enemies... but he can't obtain copy abilities from them, he can double jump... but not float infinitely). And the level design just seems to be 2.5D... like Kirby 64. This is great for the people that like Klonoa but I'd rather see Kirby do whatever they were going to do with Klonoa, because Kirby can do everything Klonoa can plus more.
Now might be a good time to port these games to currently supported hardware. I can see them selling decently on Switch. I might even buy a few myself since I don't know where my copy of Klonoa 2 is.
@Bolt_Strike
Part of the reason Klonoa's gameplay works is BECAUSE of its simplicity, the level design is built around how little moves you have under your arsenal, this opens the door for more puzzle solving and tighter platforming.
I feel like this is a poor comparison to make because Klonoa is not just Kirby Lite, you could even make an argument for it being grander in scale and most definitely more narrative-driven + challenging.
These games are both 2D platformers with unique aesthetics, and that's where the similarities basically end, they have different plots, difficulties, mechanics etc.
@Broski I've looked at videos of the gameplay and I really don't see a whole lot of puzzle solving, certainly not any better than Kirby. Platforming might be better than Kirby, but also doesn't look better than any other platformer on the market. And a good narrative is great, but unrelated to the argument. My issue is with the gameplay, not the story. So none of that seems to make up for the lack of uniqueness (and definitely not in my eyes, because unique gameplay is one of the most important factors in whether or not I want to play a game).
@Giancarlothomaz watch and see
@Bolt_Strike if I remember one of the things Klonoa does that Kirby can’t is being able to do jump combos. If you beat Klonoa 1 you get a bonus level that’s much more harder then every other level that requires you to grab enemies while your in mid air and jump off them.
@Bolt_Strike yeah look up balue’s tower. Also in lunateas veil you can do levels that requires you to use a hoverboard. That’s something that Klonoa does that Kirby doesn’t.
@Bolt_Strike yeah, it’s a poor comparison to make. Klonoa is nothing like Kirby and, in my opinion, a much tighter and more fun experience. Saying having a double jump makes Klonoa inferior in comparison to Kirby’s infinite float could be used against literally any other platformer ever made. And the game is designed around clever use of the double jump that is only afforded to you when holding an enemy.
It makes for some super clever platforming puzzles, interesting hidden goodies and really satisfying bounce chain combos. When I first grabbed an enemy and bounced off of him to reach a high up gem in the first level I fell in love with how intuitive and pure fun it felt to control. The games only build themselves around that mechanic from there.
If you’re not a fan of Klonoa, that’s fine, but to say it’s a poor mans Kirby just seems very ill informed
Namco’s doing SOMETHING and I bet a lot of dedicated Klonoa fans would be ecstatic.
BTW is the Klonoa games good and will I like them?
I would absolutely love a new Klonoa game. I have very fond memories of playing Klonoa 2 on PS2 over and over again. Must of played through that game a dozen times.
Are we confirmed yet..
I prefer Kirby games for their action leaning over the strict platforming of Klonoa, tho I recommend Klonoa to ppl who liked Kirby 64. It’s more like that Kirby game but not really like any other Kirby game. Even then the games differ in details. Kirby games are not strictly about precision platforming and tbh can’t be compared to other standard platformers. It’s a bit more beat ‘em up + some platforming.
@Broski Kirby has challenging post game content and I played the first Klonoa and the narrative didn’t seem that grand. You save a girl from an evil wizard type guy who himself is like nightmare. Also Kirby has lore or background details so I wouldn’t say it’s lacking in story or world building. I’m not really arguing which has more of these elements but simply that Kirby is not lacking.
I hope it's true, Klonoa has been gone for a while now.
Wahoo intensifies
@Kirby_Girl try the story for lunateas veil.
WHOO that story is freaking ROUGH!!!
I loved the Wii game. So long as this isn't just another remake of that, I'm all for it!!!
Hope this is a remaster collection...
Bet it's a mobile title though...
Which would be darn disappointing
@Kirby_Girl Have you seen the first Klonoa to the end? It drops quite a few heavy bombs on you, that's all I'll say.
Regardless, you could make the argument that Klonoa 1 is a relatively light-hearted game for the most part, but its sequel on the other hand...
@Broski I remember his grandpa died. That was a bummer but overall it's a story about saving his world and saving the girl. I did beat the original game. Maybe I didn't catch more but overall it wasn't like crazy outside of video game stories. It was a good game.
I love and finished both Klonoa games, even the GBA ones were great. This would be great news.
