Remember NES Remix and NES Remix 2? These two minigame-focused mash-ups took famous scenes or sections from popular NES titles and gave them a WarioWare-style spin, and both went down rather well in terms of critical response.
Sadly, it seems they didn't go down well enough for Nintendo to give us more in the 'Remix' line, with the company stating in 2014 that the success of the series depended on fan support. As much as we'd love to have seen a SNES Remix by now, it seems that Nintendo's focus has shifted and, at the time of writing, another instalment isn't on the cards.
However, Twitch streamer Kaitlyn Molinas wasn't about to take this lying down. Despite lacking any formal programming qualifications, she's created a version of 'GBA Remix' using an emulator which basically loads save states for certain games which then act as short-and-sweet 'Remix'-style gameplay sections.
The project began life back in April when Molinas stated that she was 'inspired' by NES Remix and had started tinkering with scripts. Since then, she's been honing and improving things, and recent updates are looking very impressive indeed:
There's even a WarioWare-like 'burst' mode where the gameplay speeds up to make things harder:
Molinas intends to release a demo for the project soon, so watch this space. In the meantime, would you like to see Nintendo tackle something like this officially? If so, which GBA games would you like to see represented? Let us know with a comment.

Ok this is extremely impressive for someone with limited coding experience. Just goes to show what you can do with a vision and lots of motivation.
Nintendo takedown coming in...
3...2...
Was only thinking about nes remix the other day. Would love a SNES or GBA remix. Brilliant little games!
If they released a double pack of the NES Remix games on the Switch they'd make enough money off mugs buying it again plus the rest of the large user base so we can get a SNES Remix. I can but dream.
Fun to practice your programming skills and whatnot, but we all now how this ends if you use Nintendo's assets.
To the few people trying to troll or just not giving it any thought, while I'm not seeing a lot of details here as to how it's being done, it sounds like this is probably just a program or mod built off of or added to an emulator, not too unlike RetroAchievements. Assuming it is distributed without including the games, there's no reason Nintendo should or even could do anything to stop it.
Regular people giving fans what Nintendon't. We love to see it! Hobbyist devs like Kaitlyn prove that the ideas fans want can be done, despite what Nintendo (and their instance on releasing mostly sequels, remakes, and ports on Switch) say.
@flighty Exactly, if this is using a combination of save state tricks and scripting then I’d assume that you’ll need to provide the ROMs yourself. There’ll probably be some sort of hash linked to make sure you’re using the right version of said ROM though.
The NES remix games were absolutely brilliant! Please, Nintendo, do the same with GB, GBC, GBA and N64!
This is amazing. Will this be available as GBA rom?
How long until they get sued?
I LOVED LOVED LOVED NES Remix and I typically wind up playing 9-Volt and 18-Volt stages in Warioware almost exclusively. Nintendo hates money because if an amateur coder is producing content this good, I would think they could bang out a dozen titles like these in an afternoon.
@ItsJustAnotherGamer YES TO BOTH! I would KILL for a NES Remix, SNES Remix, or a Game and Watch Gallery Collection! (I could also settle for a Game and Watch Gallery 5/6)
@Enigk you'd think this would be something they'd want to do. I mean they've been bringing the AAA WiiU over to Switch. I know I'd buy it again, plus many others who missed out on the WiiU.
Sorta reminds me of NES Remix, which was one of my favorite things on WiiU
Very cool.
I was just thinking about something like this myself.
Not making a SNES Remix is one of the saddest things Nintendo has not done. 😭
I can't speak for Wii U but the 3DS NES Remix is literally just the VC emulator with a savestate collection. The emulator is tuned for r/w the rom and ram and has advanced conditional options to add post-processing for the flashing/pattern reduction or removal.
Stuff like adding animated backgrounds is a bit more involved but if you're experienced with making cheat codes, this is the same practice, you find where in memory the timer, the money, the hp, etc. is stored and that data is obviously present in the savestate. Then you modify an existing emulator to add your hooks. I'm saying even though this takes great effort and dedication it's not insanely difficult as it may seem.
Oh my, how lovely. I cant wait to play thi.. CEASE AND DESIST
This just makes me want Nintendo to skip straight to a GBA catalogue for Nintendo Switch Online.
The sad thing is, the more sites like this give him publicity, the quicker it'll be taken down...
This website constantly positions articles about really specific or obscure or niche topics as things Nintendo "should have" done for us. No offense, but It comes off as big entitlement vibes and it's not a good look in my opinion. Nintendo doesn't "owe us" every pet project, fan game, or off-beat idea that strikes the author's fancy.
I'm sure it's good for clicks and comments to stoke feelings of entitlement, but it's a turn off for me. I'm not saying don't cover these topics, just stop framing them as something we're entitled to. Please? Maybe? No? Welp, I tried.
I am playing Ultimate NES Remix on 3DS right now and it's incredible how much potential there is in that approach. I really wish they made a huge Remix ongoing game for the online service, with new titles and microgames added periodically.
