64 is one of my all-time favorite games. The closest thing to a Mario 64 sequel were the challenge levels in Sunshine. Odyssey is not a sequel to 64 at all.
This is the same story again and again. A group of people who will always complain about Nintendo because they want them out of the hardware market and be only a game developer like Sega.
I did have a friend who's Mom did all of the merchandising in New Mexico for Nintendo. We played and finished Mario 64 two months before the N64 released because she had extra demo units. He also had a demo of Star Fox 2 for the SNES we got to try out. Nintendo actually sent it out to employees with kids for market research to see how enjoyed it. I guess we were the only ones who did...
@Tasuki Not really, though. He left The Witcher because the writers hate the material and he's a massive fan of the books/games. He didn't like participating in something that actively went against the property.
@sketchturner Sheep mentality would have been everyone also praising it because reviewers were positive. Actual players didn't like it. That's the opposite of sheep.
I'd push 3 through 6 back and move Tournament Fighters up to the third spot. There's no way a poorly ported Arcade is better than Tournament Fighters was.
As I grew up and lived through Atari, 8-bit, 16-bit, etc... generations I'd always imagined what "Next gen" 2D games would be like. Instead we got strange animations and odd styles. This actually looks like something that is a real evolution of the older style that I've wanted to see.
"unspoken expectation" of crunch is true across all of software development. It's one of the primary reasons I have tried to extricate myself from development as much as possible these days.
@Shredderlovespizza Outside of your art-style complaint I'm confused. Your only other critique is a mechanic that outside of boss fights is 99.9% unused. There's only maybe three times it's preferable to use the parry mechanic. You can blast your way through everything else in the game as you would any previous Metroid. They literally did what you said they should do.
@smithyo You apparently don't understand how Nintendo does 3rd Party with their IP. They embed people within the teams, they're in regular contact. They reserve full right to include or remove anything they want. It's a Nintendo game.
The EMMI encounters were irritating if only because there were too many. That specific mechanic is best left for rare instances. The first two encounters were pretty intense. But once it became apparent it was going to occur in every single section it was just irritating. Plus the "difficulty" was only increased by arbitrarily applying more damage to destroy the things rather than any real skill involved in evasion.
This supports my hypothesis that a Switch Pro was actually on the docket but the lack of parts meant Nintendo would pivot to have product on shelves with the remaining parts they did have.
I always knew it would blow up. For two reasons, one, I was still a gamer but because my Mother had just suffered a stroke and was in a home I was never at my house anymore. I couldn't play a PS4 on a giant TV and gaming laptops are a pain in the ass. The Switch was absolutely perfect. Second, my cousin was a truck driver and he had a fancy cab where he could plug in consoles and TV's but it was still an inconvenience. The Switch made all of that go away. I knew if it solved our inconvenience problems there was an entire world out there with similar ones Nintendo just solved. On top of that, want to play on a TV at home, you can do that too. It was perfect.
The only thing I really wanted different was that they went with the more advanced chip sets. I would not have had a problem with a $400+ version but there is a reason why Nintendo is consistently the wealthiest company in Japan and it isn't because they take business advice from me.
I was interested in it and watched the trailer video and decided if the actual gameplay was going to be continuously narrated like that I just would not be able to get through it.
I think the rumors were actually true but due to various component shortages Nintendo did their usual smart business decision. They put together a relative upgrade with what was still on hand to entice new people, and the few of us who will buy any damn thing they put out, so they still have product on the shelves. Sony and Microsoft have been absolutely struggling to get their systems out, meanwhile with a minor refresh Nintendo can have stores still fully stocked during the shortage. It's a smart business move and the type of pivot Nintendo would do. They are consistently the richest company in Japan for a reason.
@thesilverbrick Note they said that certain areas would be affected, and not all places. EMS from Japan has been shut down to pretty much everywhere, which is the cheapest plus fastest shipping so that's out right now. Likely if you're in the US or the UK they'll do a bulk ship via FedEx/DHL to save money and have a small distributor ship from there (or they should.) Other places they won't be able to reach even with that method, such as Romania, who are totally shut down. Or they're hedging their bets EMS starts again in June and they'll try to fire them all out as quick as possible, but even still they can't be responsible if some countries are still locked down. Retail has likely been on a shipping container on the ocean for a month and a half, and that container left China and not Japan, and when it reaches the shore that's going to third party distributors for Target/Walmart/etc... to be shipped to stores. That's a slow but proven consistent method. Depending on a lot of factors it might work out retail gets them first and it really is all because of the 'rona. Otherwise they would have easily EMS'ed them out to the world all May and would have beat retail.
@Ulysses I really don't think it's that crazy. Clearly Nintendo doesn't want to go for that split in exclusive's between sku's like what happened with the two games made specially for the New 3DS, I think proper scaling for something more powerful makes sense. The Witcher 3 already does that well on every other device.

Can I just have blue and red potions again, please? I don't want to cook, that's already a chore in real life.

Re: N64 Classic Perfect Dark Has Been Decompiled, Paving The Way For PC Ports
@Coalescence The only problem is Body Harvest really didn't have very great gameplay. It was an interesting attempt at early 3D gaming though.
Re: Talking Point: It's About Time Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night Came To Switch
@IronMan30 That's what it looks like. They have always ducked re-releasing this one on Nintendo Hardware and Nintendo only.
