Re: Best Of 2022: "My Uncle Works At Nintendo" - The Man, The Myth, And The Mendacity

I did have a friend who's Mom did all of the merchandising in New Mexico for Nintendo. We played and finished Mario 64 two months before the N64 released because she had extra demo units. He also had a demo of Star Fox 2 for the SNES we got to try out. Nintendo actually sent it out to employees with kids for market research to see how enjoyed it. I guess we were the only ones who did...

@Shredderlovespizza Outside of your art-style complaint I'm confused. Your only other critique is a mechanic that outside of boss fights is 99.9% unused. There's only maybe three times it's preferable to use the parry mechanic. You can blast your way through everything else in the game as you would any previous Metroid. They literally did what you said they should do.

The EMMI encounters were irritating if only because there were too many. That specific mechanic is best left for rare instances. The first two encounters were pretty intense. But once it became apparent it was going to occur in every single section it was just irritating. Plus the "difficulty" was only increased by arbitrarily applying more damage to destroy the things rather than any real skill involved in evasion.

Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

I always knew it would blow up. For two reasons, one, I was still a gamer but because my Mother had just suffered a stroke and was in a home I was never at my house anymore. I couldn't play a PS4 on a giant TV and gaming laptops are a pain in the ass. The Switch was absolutely perfect. Second, my cousin was a truck driver and he had a fancy cab where he could plug in consoles and TV's but it was still an inconvenience. The Switch made all of that go away. I knew if it solved our inconvenience problems there was an entire world out there with similar ones Nintendo just solved. On top of that, want to play on a TV at home, you can do that too. It was perfect.

The only thing I really wanted different was that they went with the more advanced chip sets. I would not have had a problem with a $400+ version but there is a reason why Nintendo is consistently the wealthiest company in Japan and it isn't because they take business advice from me.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Switch OLED Announcement Leave The Rumoured Switch Pro?

I think the rumors were actually true but due to various component shortages Nintendo did their usual smart business decision. They put together a relative upgrade with what was still on hand to entice new people, and the few of us who will buy any damn thing they put out, so they still have product on the shelves. Sony and Microsoft have been absolutely struggling to get their systems out, meanwhile with a minor refresh Nintendo can have stores still fully stocked during the shortage. It's a smart business move and the type of pivot Nintendo would do. They are consistently the richest company in Japan for a reason.
