Sabotage Studio's retro-style RPG Sea of Stars was recently delayed to 2023, but it hasn't been all bad news for fans of the upcoming, frankly stunning-looking pixel art game. Yesterday, the developer announced that the title would also be making its way to Sony consoles, and, alongside that, we got a really good look at the game's combat.
Thierry Boulanger, creative director at Sabotage Studio, shared a breakdown on PlayStation.Blog of the combat, which is heavily inspired by Super Nintendo classics like Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. Boulanger said that the team had some very clear ideas of what they wanted to start with: "there would be seamless transitions from navigation to combat, no random encounters, and no grinding". Sounds utterly perfect.
All combat in Sea of Stars is entirely turn-based — so no ATB — and you'll eventually have a party of six playable characters. Each character has four spells or skills with different damage types, and these can be combined with other characters' own skills.
One unique element of Sea of Stars' combat is 'locks'. Some enemy skills will 'lock' when being used. You can break those locks by using the appropriate weakness, which is displayed on the lock. Breaking one lock will cause the move to be weakened, but breaking all of them will stagger the enemy.
The biggest SNES inspirations come from timed hits and dual attacks. You can make your attacks stronger by pressing the action button just in time with your character's attack. You can also do the same for defending too! Interestingly, Boulanger also suggests that timing button presses also help with healing items. If only that worked in real life.
Dual attacks are where the real Chrono Trigger vibes come in — dual techs, anyone? — but this time you need to build up combo points to use these skills rather than consume MP. Spend away, as combo points don't carry over between fights!
Characters can also boost their attacks by absorbing 'live mana', which allows them to do more damage or cast a spell when they don't have enough MP. Basically, this is a really intrinsic turn-based system that takes classic influences and puts a new spin on them. We're in love, and we can't wait to check it all out.
Boulanger ended the blog post with a little tease on more features coming to Sea of Stars, which include:
- Unshackled Traversal: Swim, climb, vault, jump off or hoist up ledges as you traverse seamlessly through the world with a navigation system based on platformer expertise that breaks free from the classic bound-to-the-grid tileset movement.
- Full-on dynamic lighting: Our custom-made render pipeline allows the creation of a breathtaking world coming to life by pushing the limits of 2D pixel-art games.
- Story-rich adventure: Dozens of original characters and story arcs will take you on a captivating journey. Sometimes epic, sometimes silly, and other times emotional, Sea of Stars does its RPG duty of exploring classic themes of adventure and friendship, while also being chock-full of the unexpected twists and events you’d expect from a Sabotage production.
- A world you can touch: There are many ways to hang out in the world of Sea of Stars if you feel the need for a change of pace in your adventures. Sailing, cooking, fishing, stopping by a tavern to listen to a song or play the infamous tabletop game known as “Wheels”…
It's all shaping up very nicely, then.

Combat mechanics look fluid and fun. Can't wait for next year on this.
Yeah, this looks like it could be something special.
I have been keeping an eye on this game, and the more I see the better and better it looks.
This might be the best looking game in the works.
Really love that sprite art.
looking at this game is it 1994 all over again
I've been out of the turn-based RPG scene for a while now despite them being a staple of my childhood. Too much time commitment and too slow-paced for my current adulthood lifestyle. The last one I played was Paper Mario: The Origami King, but I was only lukewarm about it.
This is a must-have for me, though. Loving everything about it so far.
Alright, now I'm hyped for this game.
"there would be seamless transitions from navigation to combat, no random encounters, and no grinding". Sounds utterly perfect.
Yep, sold
This is a guaranteed smash hit. The Messenger is such a fantastic game, and this is looking like the same super-high level of quality and respect for the genre. This is absolutely going to be an iconic RPG!!
I'm somewhat confused by the promise of "unshackled traversal" when there seem to be very well-defined linear paths which the characters are indeed using, throughout the field environments.
Two apparent trends to note in passing. This is another title that was first announced by Nintendo (with implied, but not properly stated, exclusivity, timed or otherwise) which has gone multi-platform before release. And this is yet another ambitious indie title delayed to a fairly vague future. I mention this not to complain but to underline the difficulty of development in this day and age. That being said, I too look forward to learning more of this (it looks impressive for a second-ever title from a small studio), and I hope this one will actually see a proper physical release.
Vive le Québec.
@CANOEberry
This was announced a long time ago on Kickstarter. It was announced at reveal that it would be on PC and consoles. There was never any exclusivity when it came to this game.
Looks real hot, jerry
@CANOEberry I always found that point to be odd about "implied" exclusivity. If it isn't stated, I assume third-party games are not exclusive anywhere. People generally believe otherwise when a game is announced for one system and not immediately others. I don't understand the mindset but it is what it is.
Back to the topic of the article, this game looks excellent. I loved The Messenger, so I'm sold on it.
This is just my own personal wishlist but I really hope some of these party members are non-human. I love having a couple not-basic-humans along for the ride (moogles, robots, frog knights, yetis, etc). Don't be afraid to mix it up!
This is a 2023 Game of the Year contender
As I grew up and lived through Atari, 8-bit, 16-bit, etc... generations I'd always imagined what "Next gen" 2D games would be like. Instead we got strange animations and odd styles. This actually looks like something that is a real evolution of the older style that I've wanted to see.
Why not atb and wait style? If Chrono trigger had it a game coming out today should.
oh my.... just listen to that music and the sound effects are sooo good!! This game is going to kick butt!!!
a shame it was delayed until 2023 but i have so many games backlogged got to catch up first!!
Looks pretty awesome. Glad it's got its own sort of art style instead of yet another pixel art one.
@RGB87 they're are going to be 6 party members, we have only seen 3 of them so far... so you just might get your wish
It looks and sounds the part and certainly seems my kinda thang. I am impressed even moreso now. I had this on my "monitoring list" already
@Axecon new zelda or god of war will stand in the way..
Is this coming to switch? Mentioning that in the story would be nice. If it's coming to PlayStation & switch, i will wait for the inevitable gane pass release, like the messenger. I hate retro graphics, but the messenger was fun, despite looking horrible to me. Hopefully this will be the same. They definitely get points for all turn based battles & no ATB guage (the beginning of the downfall of final fantasy) from me, so if it gets decent reviews, & doesn't come to Xbox, I'll buy it on PlayStation 4 or switch.
@twztid13 I mean, it was announced for Switch months ago.
@Zorox88 I think they're just going for something else. Nothing to do with it having been done 20+ years ago.
@johnedwin Yes, it is likely to fall to BOTW 2 (GOWR is early Nov, 2022 so it just makes the cutoff date for this year) or possibly StarField. It may not even win Indie game of the year because it could go up against Silksong. But that's not going to stop from potential nominatiosn and/or strong favoring for other prestigious award categories!
@Indielink having all relevant information in an article os always wise. Many may be seeing it for the 1st time.
@twztid13 It's being written about on a Nintendo news site.
Also, at the bottom of the article it says,
"related games: Sea of Stars (Nintendo Switch)"
Looks stunning. Been anticipating this after playing the messenger.
I hope it not only looks good, but also offers enough content. So far, Chained Echoes appeals to me more.
Can't wait for this game.
Absolutely gorgeous game. 2023 is kind of a long wait. But dam does it look great. Can't wait!
