Digital download cards released in Japan have revealed the file size data for forthcoming Wii U titles Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard.
Star Fox Zero gobbles up 6.2GB of storage space, while the spin-off title - which began life as Project Guard - occupies a more slender 2.1GB.

I'm getting the first print edition so the storage size doesn't matter to me anyway. But if I was to download it then that wouldn't be a problem either as I have a 2TB hard drive
The Physical Zero edition comes wit ha physical version of Guard right? Os is it a download code?
I hope those who want to play this and have an 8 GB Wii U System are ready with an external hard drive.
@ninjapenguin1
Starfox Guard comes as a download code in a game case.
Sounds about right. It'd be hilarious if such games had the same size as normal 8th gen games.
Any excuse for more Starfox quotes huh Nintendolife?
Any excuse for more Starfox quotes huh Nintendolife?
@RupeeClock I think it's physical in NA
@RupeeClock @ninjapenguin1 Quote from Nintendo Store UK "The limited Star Fox Zero: First Print Edition includes Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard on separate Game Discs, as well as an exclusive SteelBook case."
Not really concerned about the space. Having an external HDD is almost a requirement for having a Wii U. Even a modest 250 or 500GB drive is more than enough space.
Physical media all the way!
The good news is that it won't consume any space on my Wii U, for two reasons:
First: I don't have that amount of space on my white Wii U.
Second: I won't be buying the game after reading the previews about the less than perfect control system.
@zool I dunno man. The game's lookin' pretty rad to me. It looks like a fitting spiritual sequel to 64, and one you wouldn't wanna miss out on just because of the controls
I really hope the NX doesn't have the storage issue the Wii U does. And yes I understand it is easy to add external devices.
Getting it physical. Hype intensifies!!!
@Mr_Zurkon or any of the other issues, for that matter. when people heard of it's then rumored 32gb internal memory, it was thought that it was forward-thinking, ground-breaking, low-power consumption flash memory. it couldn't possibly be something as ridiculous as total flash storage since that was basically a memory card or a mobile phone's storage. well...
I love that the Wii U let us pick our hard drive size.
Right after buying my Wii U I bought a 2TB hard drive so that I would NEVER have to worry about space.
Shortly after buying the hard drive I bought NBA 2K13 which is almost 25GB and I got nervous that 2TB might not be enough for a digital only guy like myself, turns out most games are more like Star Fox in Size so 2TB is PLENTY
Trying to make up my mind on an Amazon preorder (20 percent off) or eShop download (50 gold coins).
@Jamotello Ha, no kidding. 32GB goes a long way on my 3DS, on a home console not so much.
@leo13 I initially worried whether my 500GB HDD I bought for digital games would be enough to last me for the life of the system, but like you said, most games (especially Nintendo's) are pretty lite on size. I have dozens of games downloaded and I don't even think I've filled a third of it.
@ninjapenguin1 : The First Print Edition includes a disc version of Guard (from what I remember, the Steelbook has room for TWO discs). The standalone retail version of Guard, however, only includes the download code.
I find it funny that people are still bangin' on about an 8gb Wii U, not being able to download the game, like you were intending to not buy an External Hardrive, but still complain that you can't have a digital library
@HeCaster101 either the controls are good or poor.
I think a good demo so we can all test the controls before we buy would be the best idea.
@leo13 You'll never use 2TB up I'm sure.
Or anyone else for that matter. That requires all purchases to be digital only and requires purchasing over 400 games.
I probably won't get this game digitally but even if I did I still have like 700 gig free on my portable hard drive! I mean seriously, who DOESN'T have a portable hard drive at this point seeing as a good one is always on sale for fifty bucks or less every year at black Friday?
How many floppies is that?
@chiefeagle02. They could just buy the physical version.
@Mario-Man-Child
You can get a tiny SanDisk Cruzer Fit that will barely stick out of the console... $10 for 32GB, $18 for 64GB on Amazon.
@holygeez03
Except, flash storage is a very bad idea for games that are constantly written to with data, Nintendo doesn't recommend USB flash devices.
@mikegamer
I've never had any issues with quality flash storage... and if you are concerned, you can move the game(s) that you're actually playing at the moment to the WiiU drive. That's still faster than re-downloading.
I'd bet that Nintendo issues that statement to protect themselves from issues with garbage memory sticks.
I feel like Star Fox Zero is going to end up like Kid Icarus Uprising: Amazing game, but everyone ignores that and instead whines about the controls, leading to the game getting 83 on Metacritic when it should have been 93.
6GB! Jeez.
...cool, thanks for the info..when downloading, I'll be sure to “Aim for the open spot.”...
Nice video. Looks like a blast.
@holygeez03 i have 2! each barely 3 mm long, i cant even see it when looking at the wii u.
Well my copy of star fox zero and guard are both on disc so no worries here
Sheesh, so apparently the UK gets cool steelbook with two disk but US gets a download code
I though the main game would have been 10GB of barrel roll awesomeness!
@mikegamer That same "bad" flash memory is the same thing the 3DS uses for its primary storage via SD card.
At this point I stopped caring and moved on, my Wii U won't get more games digitally. I hope their new system at least has a decent storage space without forcing you to buy an external HDD at launch because it's impossible to fit more than 3 games.
@Mechageo comparing 3DS games to Wii U games in a matter of data size/reading/writing makes total sense
@ninjapenguin1 There's a physical copy of Star Guard included with the physical versions of Star Fox Zero.
First of all, I love how this is considered "news" on NLife. They take every little thing seriously, don't they? And I also find it interesting how I read the article and comments and am now posting a comment on the really pointless topic, especially considering I have no plans to purchase Star Fox Zero.
@HeCaster101
I remember star fox assualt. They put me in a tank with the worst controls ever and I stopped playing the game forever.
Controls are possibly the most important thing in a game. You mess those up, and you mess up the game
But can we kill slippy?
Man, Nintendo is pretty amazing at compressing these games to only take up a few gigs of data. When many games these days are coming out at over 50 gigabytes, Nintendo shows us games don't have to take up a ridiculous amount of space to be worth playing.
Nice to know it wouldn't put a dent in my 2TB external hard drive. Then again most retail Nintendo games don't take up a lot of space. Free space ready for the next gen console and beyond.
@Dpishere @Ootfan98 True. Got my 2tb for around $60 BF 4 or 5 years ago.
I always found it weird that certain people would complain that buying a external/portable HDD for a system separately is expensive, yet prefer to have the space already included which would cost even more.
@Mechageo Still refuse to download full games on Wii U given how they aren't tied in the same way Steam ties games.
Already pre-ordered the first print edition so I'm good to go only download indie games or add ons to my Wii Us 32 GB Storage anyway as most wii disc games are cheap enough. Wouldn't buy an external hard drive as I don't want something like that hanging out my console prefer to have it built in the system.
@zool I disagree, demo's aren't always bright spots on otherwise great games, Wonderful 101 is a shining example of a great game with a terrible demo. Sometimes a demo just isn't enough, and that could actually hurt a games reputation.
@RoomB31 that is up to the company to put out a good demo if it wants to sell its game.
Otherwise it is the gamers that takes the risk, parting with their cash.
@Man-in-Green I imagine that's what most people do.
So, we're going to get a My Nintendo code for the physical edition, right? Or is Nintendo seriously punishing us for not wanting the download large files onto the miniature hard-drive they provided?
Yes, I have an external. No, that's not the point. If you're going to have a digital only rewards program, have a platform that supports it.
