Rumour: The Next DLC Fighter For Smash Bros. Ultimate Might Be Representing SNK

I was expecting someone like Capcom or Koei when I heard about there being a suspicious copyright-reveal. Turns out I was completely wrong. And I'm very much okay with that.

If this is true then I hope Athena asamiya from king of fighters ,or the hero character from crystalis . since It was rereleased in the SNK collection even though Nintendo’s gameboy color version was vastly inferior that game is a hidden Gem and deserves a spot XD

@Tulio517 The file size on its own isn't proof of anything; it's just a tiny unlock key, since the character would be included in a game patch to allow you to face them online, but you'd have to pay to use them yourself. But yeah, the potential for an error exists overall.

If it turns out to be true I think Terry is a strong contender. Mai or a Metal Slug character would also be up there, but Mai even puts Bayonetta and ZSS to shame in the fan service department, and Metal Slug's characters aren't as widely known.

I'm thinking Terry Bogard would be a great choice, he is pretty much the mascot of SNK. Marco Rossi from Metal Slug would be another obvious choice.

The date on the right is a giveaway that this is fake. Nothing related to smash was released on November 1st, 2018.

If this is true, there goes my prediction for Geno and Master Chief being the last two characters haha.

Either Terry, Mai, Haoharu, Kyo, or the metal slug equivalent of Dragon Quests hero.

@kenyowa The Fighters Pass was released on that date. The Smash Direct happened and then the Fighters Pass was purchasable and the game was preorderable.

Never played an SNK game so I don't know what to think about these developments. Could be a fun way to get me to try some out though. Nintendo just needs to do a direct soon and get through with what's going on with Smash and everything else.

If not Terry then Rock Howard would be cool. That or someone from Samurai Showdown, that's got a new entry so likely.

I have significant doubt, the other three are either much more relevant, or had huge amount of fan request and was perceivably impossible to some. SNK seems more left field than persona. Ryu Hayabusa seems like a more credible leak. I have reservations for both tho.

Terry and Mai feel like the obvious, identifiable KoF representatives. Haohmaru would be the best pick from Samurai Shodown I'd say. Personally, I'd root for Marco from Metal Slug.

SNK is one of those companies that I've never been interested in. If they did do Terry then it'd be cool if they gave him a female alt based on SNK's female fighting game.

There are several popular SNK female characters. Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury, Kula Diamond from King of Fighters, Rimururu from Samurai Shodown, Fio Germi from Metal Slug, etc. It could be any one of them.

@Mr_Muscle : Baseless unsubstantiated gossip from some schmuck on Twitter (that's their source here, after all) should not quality as "news". Usually when a "rumour" is posted, there is some evidence to justify speculation, either it being through a retail, classification and/or copyright listing.

Reading the damn text on the page of the alleged "rumour" (with its references to Wii U and 3DS) should have dispelled any suspicion whatsoever, but nope, the site still went ahead and published this crap for clicks.

@Silly_G I think that might be the nature of games journalism, where rumors like this one sometimes turn out to be leaks or duds, depending on where it lands in the end. As for you, I’m not sure who forced you to click the article but it is listed as a rumor before you even click the article. Just saying!

Yeah, based on that Reddit thread their web design intern just accidentally pasted the textbox and copyright to the wrong game. Seems a bit too obscure/niche anyway, though most of the fan suggestions are kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point.

I think the protagonist from Astral Chain would make a great addition to Smash. You could use the other members of neuron and the twin sibling as the different skins. You could call on any of the 5 legion for a short time before they have to cool down and then you have the x baton, gun and Gladius for fighting as the protagonist even the final smash is easy to think of, Lapps darts around screen attaching balloons to other fighters and if they get enough on them they float of screen for the KO.

@8bitSquid Too new. The roster, DLC included, was decided back in 2015, which means Incineroar will be the newest character we see due to Pokemon Company giving advanced info to Sora Ltd. If they actually do a second Fighter's Pass, then you might see Astral Chain content.

Nintendo has no ownership over any characters from the Professor Layton series, they just publish the games in the West with Level 5 having full ownership of the series. (Quite similar to how Nintendo often publishes Dragon Quest games in the West).

Pheonix Wright has never had a game published by Nintendo (not counting the Layton crossover). The franchise is owned solely by Capcom.

I was wondering if someone would be pedantic enough to point this out. It should be obvious by context that I was referring to characters most would see as identifiably belonging to Nintendo platforms or properties.

@Sabrewing DLC wasn’t decided in 2015. Sakurai picked the base roster at the beginning of the project, but the DLC is chosen by Nintendo and approved by Sakurai. All of it is developed post-release. Astral Chain is unlikely IMO, but we could certainly see someone from 2016-2018.

Because of SamSho coming in december, it's more than likely gonna be Naokoruru. Who's no stranger to being on the console.

I'm happy for the SNK representation. Very unexpected, but such a long reigning fighting game rep. SNK already got Mai/Kula on DOA, Geese on Tekken, and more representing other consoles/franchises.

SNK has been regularly publishing games on Nintendo consoles since the NES days.

And SNK games will forever be linked to the Switch (at least in memory), just due to how Hamster released a new Neo Geo game every week when the Switch was in a drought of third party support. I believe there were one or two weeks where an old Neo Geo game was the only release!

What if it's Kyo...but he has Iori as an Echo or Alt??? 😍 Or Terry with an Andy echo/alt, but... Andy's kind of boring as a character in general.

I'd be more than fine with a SNK rep. Out of their characters I think Nakoruru would be a fun choice. She could use Mamahaha both to attack and recover.

If we get a snk rep I think terry bogard is the best choice. He’s very iconic, I love metal slug to tho. There’s a lot of really awesome music we’d get from king of fighters to. Samurai showdown having a rep is definitely possible with its resurgence but if they go that route please don’t give us another sword fighter. I think we’re good there. I’d love to see more classic Nintendo characters but that’s just not going to happen and maybe this is best for business for them. Toad and excitebike would be two of my most wanted.

@Euler They made Xenoblade 2's Rex a Mii costume because he "missed the boat" of having design documents drawn up and approved. They can't just start drawing up new ones later after the game goes gold.

@Rexx You read my mind. Growing up on Layton, I fell in love with the characters and world. I almost lost my mind in Diabolical Box when he started fencing. I know we have plenty of sword fighters in smash, but if they could do revolving characters (think of Pokemon Trainer) with Layton, Luke, and Flora. each having their own unique attack, that would be awesome!

SNK characters have been making guest characters in other games as of late. Won’t be surprised if one shows up in Smash. I’d welcome it.

@Sabrewing yeah, I know, I just wanted to bring another side, as a lot of people, including myself, were taking this as fact. Nintendo itself "leaked" it after all. The page being taken down could also mean both things. The plot thickens, I guess we'll know soon enough.

@thesilverbrick I am, which another commenter also pointed out. I didn't say he was a Nintendo property, more that he was representative of Nintendo.

To my knowledge, the character has only ever appeared on Nintendo platforms (excluding mobile). The same can be said for Phoenix Wright.

I shouldn't have assumed others would be able to read between the lines of what I was saying there. I'll be terrifically clear in the future!

Im so down for a SNK rep! My theory is that its most likely Terry Bogard but i really want Kyo Kusanagi. Kyo could be the character, his stage could be Esaka, and the music choices would be from most King of Fighters games. The music tracks is what makes me believe Samurai Shodown isn’t going to be the rep. Sam Sho has a lot of atmospheric music.

@Sabrewing That was for the main roster, not DLC. The costume was announced on the ground that Rex was too new to be on the main roster, but Sakurai still wanted to make sure he was represented in the game. He's not too new to be a DLC character, though I think he would be unlikely for other reasons (fairly niche series).

Also, Joker and Persona 5 came out in 2016 - after the base roster was decided. It's highly unlikely Sakurai knew back in December 2015 that Joker would be DLC for Smash.

I haven't played Smash yet. But this new SNK character is very intriguing as we have quite a few possibilities here. My thoughts are:
1. Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury
2. Terry, Andy and Joe from Fatal Fury
3. Kyo Kusanagi from King Of Fighters
4. Haohmaru from Samurai Showdown
5. Ralf and Clark as they have lots of appearances in multiple series. Ikari Warriors (they are known as Paul and Vince); a few Metal Slug series; and also King Of Fighter series

I don't know if I believe this.

I'm not going to judge this right away, but I don't think I'll care for this one much.

In all seriousness, it's about time we got some proper SNK representation in a Smash title. Geese Howard has been incredibly well received in Tekken 7. Don't really care who gets added so long as they fall a little further from being a Ryu/Ken offshoot than some of the main series representatives (though I wouldn't be complaining if this were the case; the likes of Terry and Ryu are famed with good reason!). While it'd likely be from a series like KoF or mayyyyybe even Metal Slug, I'd personally love to see Rai or Arina from Waku Waku 7. It's about as likely as Evie from Paladins but I can dream.

Honestly, i am going to be very disappointed if this is true... what is the point on getting a character from another fighting game? There is nothing fresh about it since is a character that has already been used in other fighting games and is already adapted for such! The previous DLC pack 1, 2, & 3 are characters that have never been in a fighting game and no one expected, but porting fighters from other already popular fighting games is kinda lame in my opinion... it was perfectly ok with Ryu and Ken but bringing more as DLC at this point is just boring... we need fresh new characters! Characters that we never expected to see and play as in a fighting game, specially in Smash! To name a few as examples it can be characters like Shantae, Sora, Lloyd Irvine, Hatsune Miku, heck even Mickey Mouse would be an unexpected interesting addition to the roster! Here is an idea, how about another SEGA character? Arle Nadja seems like an interesting candidate! Or add another Nintendo character like Funky Kong or Paper Mario, or maybe even Ninten from Earthbound Beginnings! Porting a fighting character from a fighting game to another, like that's never been done before... Nintendo has got to keep adding something fresh, not recycled.

Mai seems too obvious of a choice if the rep is SNK. I don't know if they're willing to go in that direction; however, I would still like the rep to be female.

Smash Bros. doesn't play like Fatal Fury, KoF, Samurai Shodown or any other of SNK's many fighting games, so it wouldn't be simple as "porting him over". Ryu and Ken aren't a 1:1 version of any game in the SF series, because while Smash is still a 2D Fighter, it's in it's own subgenre that require changes be made to make up for the obvious differences between styles of fighting games.

Simon Belmont has been in a Smash Bros. styled game before and yet the Smash Bros. team had a fresh take on the character.

Ninten's never going to make it into a Smash (at least one with Ness also in) without a heavy redesign.

Also don't we already have two character from turn based JRPGS in the DLC for Ultimate? Before you say "Paper Mario and Ninten wouldn't play anything like Joker or Hero" you are 100% correct, but neither would Nakoruru play anything like Ken.

@Silly_G While I'm also under the impression that this is no more than a coincidence, the mention of Wii U and 3DS are from the Hero Challenger pack page as the article states. So it shouldn't be used to dismiss the rumor

@LUIGITORNADO I disagree. As someone who has been to Japan many times, Hero was a very important inclusion into the game. You could here people talking about it in the metro the day after Hero got announced in smash bros

My money’s on Haohmaru or Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown. The latter is apparently pretty popular in Japan a la Hero, and after I did some research I feel like she’d be a fun unique addition to the cast.

Though it seems that The King of Fighters is way more popular and iconic, so then I hope it's Mai Shiranui (just out of personal preference) but I'd be cool with Terry Bogard. He's the main character from two of SNK's most popular series after all. And in terms of female fighting game characters, Chun-Li deserves it more than Mai, even though that would mean 3 SF characters.

PS. The last female characters we got were Isabelle, Daisy, and Inkling Girl, and if you wanna count the alien Dark Samus because it's imitating a female body inside a suit, then that one as well. Bayonetta and Corrin were last gen DLC. What gender is Kazooie by the way?
