Vblank Entertainment is bringing physical versions of Shakedown: Hawaii to the Wii and Wii U this summer. Yes, you read that correctly.
Originally released on the 3DS and Switch, the game will include all of the latest updates, including The Mogul Update, the Full Tank Update and "many other little tweaks, improvements and optimizations that went into the game post-launch."
The Wii version will come with both 50hz and 60hz, as well as both NTSC and PAL output. Control-wise, it supports the Wii Remote, Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro, and GameCube Controller. Thanks to clever optimisation, the entire game fits into the Wii's system memory, so you won't experience any load times once the game boots up. The catch? The game will only work on European Wii consoles (we'll come to the reason why in a second).
For those interested in the Wii U version, it offers both SD and HD modes with 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Interface-wise, you're looking at the Wii U GamePad, Wii U Pro Controller, Wii Remote, Wii Classic Controller, or Wii Classic Controller Pro. It can be played entirely on the GamePad, with touch control.
Actually releasing a game on the Wii in 2020 is harder than you might imagine, as Vblank's Brian Provinciano explains:
Although we've still seen some Wii releases over the past few years, seeing one more wasn't a given. Indeed, despite my best efforts, it just wasn't in cards anymore, at least, not for North America. However, rather than giving up, I decided to reach out to Nintendo of Europe as well, and to my surprise, they said yes, and allowed it to squeeze through before that door closed too. Words truly can't express how appreciative I am, and I can't thank them enough for all the heavy lifting they did on their end to make it a reality. It's meant the world to me, and these Wii discs specifically hold an immense place in my heart.
As incredibly as it all worked out, unfortunately, Wii discs aren't region-free, and I didn't want North American players to be left out. Although I continued talks with NOA, floating around a Plan B, Plan C... Plan Z, sadly, every idea hit a wall. The clock was ticking, and after exhausting all other options, I decided to pivot to the next best thing: the Wii U. After all, the Wii U still supported Wii Remotes, Wii Classic Controllers, and even 4:3! So, I rushed against time to port Shakedown: Hawaii to Wii U as well, and get it through certification before that door could close too. To give it the best chance of getting greenlit under such a tight timeframe, I had to work fast. I needed to present it to Nintendo as close to tied-in-a-bow and ready-to-release as possible... and as soon as possible. Needless to say, it all worked out too. Even with the tight schedule, I couldn't be happier with the final result, and was still able to give it some nice Wii U finishing touches.
I want to thank everyone at Nintendo for all the support, and everyone there who helped make these possible. To the lotcheck teams, thank you, thank you!
The Wii version will be available for purchase online on Thursday, July 9th at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm UK for $29.99 USD, and is limited to just 3,000 copies; Vblank suggests that interested parties subscribe to email notifications to avoid missing out. The Wii U version will follow in August.

Far stranger things have happened this year so eh
I think I have to buy these just because.
@RandomNerds I think that's what they're hoping for 😄
Wait, the Wii version is EU / PAL only, and yet you list it as “available for purchase online on Thursday, July 9th at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm UK for $29.99 USD“?
Why such a US-centric comment for a EU-exclusive disc?
At this point anyone knows collectors will buy up any new title for either console to keep their collections “complete.” And it can also be profitable for some creators to keep a few copies stashed around to personally eBay a few years from now.
Not that I think that’s a bad thing, more power to them! I actually love seeing old consoles get new physical games regardless.
This is awesome!!
That's pretty cool. Does it make sense? Probably not, but I'm kind of glad to see this anyway.
Good for them, making what appears to be an average-at-best game into a collector's item. I'd rather use the same money to buy a game I want to play though, as this is the kind of game I'd only play if it was free with PS+ or NSO.
Honestly interested in getting either version. I have it on 3DS and enjoyed it alot. I still use my Wii U (more than Switch recently) so will be nice to have that option. Every credit to making this happen.
I'd like to have a Wii copy. Let's see if I'm fast enough to claim one. I don't have it in any other form yet but it's been on my wishlist.
Cool story. Regarding the reason it's only going to be out in Europe on Wii, that is some classic Nintendo tomfoolery right there.
These people are just insane, but god damn I love them.
I'm getting both. Glad my Wii has a new game to play
Brian's an absolute madman! The one-man programming army gets my support again with the WiiU version.
Wow for him to go that far to support those two systems was an incredible feat indeed but yeah it was also Nintendo's own fault for making the Wii region lock in the first place. You can't play games from any region other than the origin region which really sucks but still didn't affect the Wii sale at the time due to the casual audience never giving a crap about that issue.
It's great. There isn't any physical version on Switch, right? I may be giving my Wii U one last game after all. Just for making a point.
But... I'm not sure if I understood. There seems to be the Wii version, only for European Wiis, and the Wii U one, for American consoles. Did I get it right? If I did, then I'll have to get the Wii version, as I'm Europe based.
Another thing to consider: if it comes from the United States we'll have to pay custom fees for importing a copy
@retro_player_77
Honestly, region-locking isn't really an issue for any Nintendo console.
NES, you just need a Famicom adapter (the most difficult of this bunch to find).
SNES/N64: If it fits, it plays, just make it fit.
Gamecube: Swiss
Wii: Homebrew Channel (Which let me play Another Code: R), great sequel to Another code/Trace Memory btw.
Wii U: Haxchi/OurLoader
@Moroboshi876 There was a physical for Switch already.
I booted up my old Wii U recently. I say "booted up", actually more like "TRIED" to boot up. Man what a terrible console. Pro controller was out of charge, and it uses a different USB type to the massive, clunky tablet controller. HUGE delays when switching between menus. Hooking up the bloody sensor bar to go with the Wii Mote, the Nunchuck add on...all so clunky after using the Switch. I mean, I loved the console when it came out but in hindsight...what a misfire.
Xbone owners are pissed about this, they've not even got a digital port of this and a Wii/Wii U port is gonna pour some vinegar in their wounds.
I understand where they are coming from but this guy just thought "I wonder what a Wii version will be like?" and then saw it worked and got on with it!
I missed out on the physical Switch version so will grab a Wii copy if I can as its nice and quirky and it'll be nice for the Wii to read a new game disc.
@nukatha It's an issue when not many people had knowledge of any of those.
Sucks that the Wii version is EU only, but thankfully my Wii has no problem playing imports
@leerafuse I didn't know that. Was it a normal release or a limited one by LRG and the likes?
Just Dance 2020 for Wii intensifies
And they just had to desecrate the artwork with the USK rating logo.
Incorrect, Wii U only supports 16:9 wide-screen output. The Wii version will support 4:3 natively and offer anamorphic widescreen.
So...is the Wii U version PAL compatible?
@Tharsman To be fair, the Vita version of this game was one of the last releases for that console (it barely just made the cut off point for Vita cartridge manufacturing before Sony shut that down) and it took days to sell out. For some reason collectors seem to race to Limited Run Games to buy their games, but not other publishers of 'limited' games... Hopefully if people want this Wii release, they manage to get it without having to add it to basket and check out within 15 seconds of it going on sale.
@Sonicvic That's what I want to know too.
So So awesome, I'd of liked both, but I'm glad the PAL version is the wii.
@Sonicvic No
@4by3 Runs perfectly on my 4:3 CRT
Wii i can understand, because parents still buy the wii for their kids, lots of second hands etc.
@YANDMAN
Letterboxed 4:3. Not fullscreen 4:3.
@Reprise I guess it’s just marketing. Limited run games are extremely well done, other similar publishers are not as known. Only other one I actually know off the top of my head is special reserve games.
So only 3,000 copies for the Wii version means it will be snapped up by scalpers day one and be on Ebay at four for five times the price the day they get it. Amazing dedication that they are releasing these two versions but you know it is being done to make them incredibly expensive in the future.
@nukatha that's not true of pal consoles though. After generation 7 with HDMI it doesn't matter. But some things can run janky when you boost 50hz up or 60hz down.
@Moroboshi876 It was released just like these Wii and Wii U games. Only on their own website. https://www.vblank.com/store.php
I honestly don't understand why Nintendo are cutting off the Wii and Wii U (particularly) prematurely, there are companies that I'm sure would eventually release the back catalogue of eShop titles on physical media, with disc manufacturing now coming to a close, it seems a real shame not to keep those gates open for anyone wanting to make an unusual product.
@4by3 Nope, fullscreen.
@YANDMAN
Which games?
Who knows what will be the last game for the Wii.
Digs Wii out of grave
"The Wii version will come with both 50hz and 60hz, as well as both NTSC and PAL output."
Isn't this straight up telling people that if they boot the disc with homebrew on an NTSC console it will work without any patching? PAL Wii games don't offer an NTSC switch.
I think he wasn't supposed to say that, apparently it's normal for Wii games to secretly contain multiple video modes and never use them, under normal circumstances. Only a few PAL games are fully limited to PAL video modes.
And here I thought Ubisoft was the last line of defence for the Wii...
Awesome! These games will indeed become collectible down the future!
This game was great. Mindless fun getting that 100% completion. Retro City was great too. Glad to see they are getting more physical releases.
@NathanTheAsian
Ubisoft: We released the last Wii game ever
Vblank: hold my beer
So it sounds like the Wii version is PAL-only, whilst the Wii U version is NA-only. If so, that's a shame; I'd love a PAL Wii U release.
@AlienX Actually some PAL Wii games only support 50hz; The Last Story being an example.
@Moroboshi876 I do own a physical copy for Switch yes indeed. I ordered from VBLANK directly. In the vault! 🤣
This is surprising news. I’ll try to grab both copies but I did strike out on Vblanks last Wii U entry! Tough to find a copy now!
Full circle! As this very website reported back in 2014, the original WiiWare version of Retro City Rampage did not meet the Nintendo sales threshold required for the developer to get paid:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/07/vblank_entertainment_provides_sales_threshold_update_for_retro_city_rampage_on_wiiware
That game was developed by the same guy as Shakedown: Hawaii. Funny how things worked out in the end!
@RainbowGazelle Well, I wasn't denying that. Interesting, I can't find quality art of the box, except for this https://art.gametdb.com/wii/coverfull/EN/SLSP01.png
It says 60Hz only, it's bizarre to me that it wouldn't have it since it's a Japanese game.
@AlienX Yeah, sorry, I meant some only support 60hz. So some PAL games are only NTSC was my point. Sorry, wasn't well made.
The fact that there is another game coming out for the Wii and yet I can't open it makes me sad 😂😂
I have to think these releases are made to grab headlines and get more sales from collectors, although I'm surprised they still produce Wii games. There must also be an element of developers trying to claim the coveted title of last physical release on the system.
So if he couldn't get it released on the Wii in North America, is that a soft confirmation that the last Just Dance IS the last Just Dance for Wii?
@nukatha as an EU citizen, I can safely say your list is icorrect.
some console gens had no region protection between usa and japan (or only physical protection)
where can i buy it
Sweet!
Glad it all worked out for him!
@4by3 if you don't use the HDMI, every single game on the Wii u defaults to 4:3 letterbox. However, games like Mario Kart 8 and smash natively support true 4:3. By that you are "incorrect"
@Ky9081
I've just tested Mario Kart 8 with the Official Wii Component cables, set my Wii U to 480i and 4:3. The Wii U menu displays letterboxed, but loading Mario Kart 8 and starting a race also displays letterboxed 4:3.
@4by3 All of them
@YANDMAN
All of what?
Awesome news. I may go for the Wii U release but to be honest I’m still hoping for a physical 3DS release before I pull the trigger on that digital version.
@Moroboshi876 the Wii U version of the game will be available WorldWide. It will relase in august
I want both, just because this guy is crazy.
I loved the Retro City Rampage NES beta version that's included in the WiiWare version.
@FargusPelagius not nice < niais < nescius := not-skilled, ocsýmòron
physical -> real; all versions are fýsic and digital, if not real and download (virtval); will -> shall; won't -> shan't; harder -> touher
Managed to score a physical version of each game for Wii, I'm most chuffed
