This is interesting, Nintendo has been slow to iterate its home consoles, and quick with (some of) it’s portables. Since the switch is both i am curious as to which way they go. Both Sony and Microsoft have launched “pro” and “slim” models either simultaneously or within a year of each other.
Merry Christmas nintendolife! My switch was the most used of my consoles this Christmas. I finally unlocked all the Smash characters so my nieces and nephews could play as their favorite characters. I also took it to my sisters house for her annual Christmas Eve party so we could play the newest jack box game with the adults. What a flexible little system it is.
I dig this, as I am a huge DQ fan back to the first game when I was like 9, but for the first two dlc characters to be from JRPGs seems a bit short sited. While Persona and especially DQ are Rockstars in Japan, most western gamers don’t share my love for the series. I think some mega man characters or More LOZ or even Skyrim or Doom or Diablo characters if you want to go 3rd party switch would be a little more universally accepted.
I was able to create a seasonal hero if I signed in with my daugheters account that does not pay for a Nintendo subscription; however, I could not do this if I was first signed in with my account which has a Nintendo subscription.
@dimi I think they might be able to get Red Dead 1 up and running on switch without compromising the Xbox 360 era game; however, no way the switch could run something as big or graphically intense as RDR2.
@Bunkerneath Also, it does not take that long to “optimize for the switch environment”. At 3 games a month it would take over a decade to release the whole NES library.
I got the online service for the NES games, the online play is still mostly bad. No open voice chat (except for Fortnite?) and most games don’t allow matchmaking. But, I would have paid more than $20 into the virtual console over 12 months, so I’m good.
@SmaggTheSmug my thoughts exactly. Unlocking new items and finding secrets is my favorite part of the original Legend of Zelda. I’ve played it through about 10 times since I was a kid to find the most efficient way of doing this.
@jhewitt3476 I don’t personally care, however, Nintendo really really cares. They make a small amount on the hardware, but the bulk of their revenue comes from software sales. Also, they are pretty much against piracy. People play pirated games on the hacked Switch that they don’t pay for.
The more I think about this the more it makes sense. The current model switch has a hardware vulnerability that allows it to be hacked. Nintendo is likely revising the system to close that security breach.
@jhewitt3476 The point wasn’t to show appreciation. The article asked what I wanted. That is what I want. My iPhone Xs Max is a fraction of the size with more computing power and has no noisy fan. You are entitled to your opinion as am I.
I had a similar experience. I joined the marines in the summer of ‘99 and although I had just received a N64 and Ocarina for Christmas, I never got around to completing it. Fingers crossed that 3D port makes it to Switch (I had it on 3ds but shortly after purchasing we had my daughter, there goes that). I think I finally have time for it...maybe I need an ocarina.
I would have paid for the year membership for the nes games alone. The only games I play online with any regularity are Splatoon 2 and Mario Tennis. As it stands I was playing Hockey and Double Dragon all last night.
I like the fact that they are launching with all the old sports games I loved as a kid, now with online functionality. I can’t wait to play hockey against my friends that live out of state.
I like the way Kotaku does it. They have a full-fledged well written review with no score; however, halfway through the review there is a short synopsis with a break down of likes and dislikes. This is the equivalent of a score as far as time needed to review it, but has context.
I have Skyrim on my Xbox one x, but the switch is my favorite place to play it. I hope the put fallout 3 on as well. I bought doom and wolfenstein ii as well, but the look seriously fuzzy compared to their 4K counterparts.
I would 100% buy a season pass worth of mixed old/new content like they had on the Wii U version. That would be awesome if they eventually got every past track on here.
This is the beauty of the Switch. I play mine half the time away from the TV and half the time on the TV. It doesn’t have to be one or the other, it’s better because it’s both. You keep interest in the game while away from home and can really dig in when you have your big TV and pro Controller.
That looks great, way better than the Doom port (which visually I found disappointing). I was planning on grabbing this on the Xbox One X, but would rather have a portable version.
The announcement was that PS4 can play with mobile and pc and Xbox can play with mobile and pc but PS4 and Xbox cannot play together. And most iOS devices on iOS 11 (the iPhone 5s and above) have more horsepower than the switch. But I still think it could handle it.
I agree that these Switch rewards are very blah; however, I did put them to good use and bought resident evil revelations 2 today. What an amazing game. It is more impressive to me than Doom was as far as having a console game on the go.
I love this game on switch, but playing online with random teammates never works well when going against coordinated players. I with the chat on switch worked better. Here’s hoping for switch 2.0.
I would love to see a “Mario Baseball” full game for the Switch. That would be awesome. Football would be cool too, I can’t remem the last time Madden popped up on switch.
@Discipledoctor if they would allow for mfi controllers it would be great. I am not interested in using my iPhone as a motion controller steering wheel.
I don’t have any Nintendo tattoos but I do have a Yoda tattoo a Marines tattoo and two others. To those who say “what will that look like when your 60” I say everything on you is going to look less appealing at 60, most 60 year olds I know don’t really worry about body image. Most of my elderly family have tattoos from the military, my great grandfather had a hula girl on his forearm from when he was in the Navy in WW2.
A GBA classic would be awesome. I bought my first GBA in Singapore when I was deployed with the marines about 6 mos before it came out in the states. I played the heck out of FZero and Super mario Bros 2 in Japanese for like 5 months. Possibly one of my favorite systems ever.
This game is more resource intense than you would think. The difference between how it plays on my Xbox one vs my Xbox one x is noticeable. I would assume the difference between the Xbox and the switch would be noticeable as well.

This is the only LOZ I’ve never played. Too bad.
Re: It Looks Like An (Unofficial) Game Boy Advance Mini Is On The Way, But It Plays NES Games
