Blizzard's Diablo III Eternal Collection arrives on the Switch at the start of next month. Obviously, if you want to play online with other people, you'll need to sign up to Nintendo's online membership.
If not, though, you're won't entirely miss out on the fun. Earlier this month, a Blizzard community manager over on the game's official forums confirmed the popular seasons mode would not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription:
There’s some confusion about the necessity of the Nintendo Switch Online service in relation to the upcoming Diablo III: Eternal Collection. To clarify, access to playing Seasons does not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. However, access to online multiplayer does.
It was also mentioned how the seasons mode on Switch is freely accessible - just like it currently is in the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game.
In seasons mode you can unlock special in-game achievements and obtain exclusive cosmetic items such as pets, portraits, wings and pennants.
Are you glad to hear this? Will you be picking up Diablo III Eternal Collection on release? Tell us in the comments.

I am so looking forward to Diablo 3. This will be my first proper go at it and I can’t bloody wait.
Diablo needs some moisturiser on his skin.
So excited . Been playing this alot lately on my PS4 but having it on the go will be freakin awesome!!!!
It’s great that you can play this game offline in the Switch version.
Too many great games, too many great games! And so little time!
This is another day 1 for me, but I will probably let it be on the shelf for a while.
How come most of the games I want/play on Switch are extreme time sinks? Zelda: BotW, Dark Souls, Ys VIII, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, XC2: Torna, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Diablo III, Victor Vran, Starlink, Skyrim, Octopath Traveler, etc. Even platformers, FPS and puzzle games feel gigantic these days...
I know little about this game, I don't even understand the gameplay, but I do like the look of it. This is where a demo could swing things.
I'm not really a Smash fan, unless the single player mode is worth the high price alone , which I doubt. So I will have to pick a difference Christmas game. Maybe Diablo or Disgaea 1 or Dark Souls.
Decisions.
Great news as I have not subscribed to online service and have this pre ordered
But didnt they say that cross platform will not happen on the Switch version?
@Quarth same here. Got a lot of the games you mentioned there. Some I haven’t started yet. Finishing Hollow Knight at the moment. Of course the games being that huge and grand is a part of what makes them great. Is part the reason for their critical acclaim, but there are so many gems like that that are worth playing. Good for the Switch, glad to see it, but difficult to find the time to experience them all, or just some of them.
@Quarth Heh, tell me about it. Over 100 hours into HW and I'm 66% into the first adventure map out of nine.
As I haven't followed the news on D3 that much, anyone feel like @ing me with how couch co-op is going to look like?
I'm getting D3 on switch for sure. I have to say that it warms my heart that you don't need the online membership to play seasons. I stand strong on not supporting the switch's online program before it becomes worth the cash. ❤️ Ty BlizzY ... Btw. I don't mean to start the whole switch online debate again, so please! Just.. please!
@Rubbercookie @gb_nes_gamer Glad I’m not alone in this.
At least I’ve completed BotW and XC2, and I’m almost finished with Ys VIII.
@Schizor88 until you think it’s worth the cash. If playing D3 online required NOnline subscription would it then be worth it for you? Just curious. That is all.
I’m not fussed about playing Diablo III again.
Diablo II Remastered however...😈
Ok, now I’m sold!
I hate the Nintendo online. Glad I don’t have to invest in it for this game.
I can respect that
This is day one! I will go to the store 1 minute after they open and I will demand my copy with 20% discount!
Looking forward to this, this is the kind of third party support we need.......
I just know that I am buying this day 1 only because I bought and sold it both for ps3 and 4, and there is no excuse why I don’t play through it again, on my favorite console ever too. Even though it’s not Diablo 2, it’s still the next best game in this genre.
9 parchments was fun and titan quest is decent too, but they are not Diablo.
Hey, if it'll get more people coming back to play, right?
can't wait for more D3. One of the best games to Zen out to, imho.
Good, i only play seasons anyway.
@Schizor88 yeah nor convinced by online here yet either..
@Gowtu_Games what does the seasons mode involve please?
@beazlen1 interesting question. I think i would have to buy the subscription if i needed it to play dia3 seasons. 😊😎
Can I still get that stuff even if I have subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online?
@DigiF4N But I have it downloaded to my Switch already, I'm saving that spot for My Hero Academia in my Splatoon 2 Switch case
@DigiF4N as well as ark survival evolved and team sonic racing, i'm going stay subbed, I enjoy Nintendo Switch Online
Excited about Diablo 3!
For those do not know what season is, its an feature that you start over to level one for the season and try get to max level, beat trials and etc. Once the season is over, your character will be added to your normal mode with added paragon experiences. The reasons why you should try start in seasons because you get bonus and an chance to get cosmetics that you cannot get in normal mode.
After the season is over, the "exclusive gears" that you can obtain by picking up in season will be added to normal mode so you not miss any gears if you did miss an season. Cosmetics may be missable.
This is good for people who have times to play the season.
I know the series but never played Diablo.
I know the hype is much bigger but I'm curious if it can beat Victor Vran which is great imho. (And the Overkill Edition has the best soundtrack a video game ever had!)
Just read this on Polygon:
“You’re going to need to pony up for a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online if you’re looking to play online multiplayer or create a Seasonal character, however.”
I haven’t played Seasons but logic suggests you need to create a Seasonal character to play that mode, right? So does this mean you won’t be able to play it without a subscription because you can’t create your character? I’m so confused!
Hey Guys read the headline to this article again: "Blizzard Clarifies Switch Online Membership Won't Be Required To Play Diablo III's Seasons Mode." I just picked up a copy today. I will check back in and let y'all know how it goes without a Nintendo Online Subscription. Peace and Happy Gaming!!!!
I was able to create a seasonal hero if I signed in with my daugheters account that does not pay for a Nintendo subscription; however, I could not do this if I was first signed in with my account which has a Nintendo subscription.
