Re: Feature: Every 3D Super Mario Game Ranked

Funny how people always comment how hard it was to handle the controls in SM64DS. Maybe I just mastered them quickly back in 2005. I really liked the extra content and wish every rerelease had such features (new stages, characters etc.)

I just enjoy the track design and gameplay mechanics in CTR with higher skill ceiling. Me and my cousin are one of the few people who found MK8 track design too easy and the gameplay mechanics boring. CTR NF is in my top 10 games overall but it's the absolute lowest there due the loading times. 30 fps doesn't really bother me in this case. It would hurt my performance in say, F-Zero GX and even though CTR has the blue flame boost mechanic, I've been able to do it fine.

Re: Top Smash Melee Player Unsure About Future Involvement In Competitive Scene

I'm glad Nintendolife still keeps reporting about competitive Smash Bros. It's also very nice to see actual thought put behind some comments. Not all though, usually they're very surface level like:

  • This person should get a "real job"
  • "Games shouldn't be played competetively because I don't like that"
  • "Why are they still playing a 20 year old game???"

Yes, it's good to have valid criticism but I see that so rarely in Nintendolife when it comes to competetive Smash Bros. And to anyone commenting how they can't understand why they're talking about this one person (=important person to a large competetive scene, and it's getting even bigger because of the latest developments in Melee netplay)... yeah, keep on giving add revenue to NL by clicking these articles, more Melee related content for me to read.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine Is Now 18 Years Old

Sunshine had the best Mario to control in a 3D game. I just love the moveset. A lot of people complain about the lack of long jump while I always complained about the lack of slide move in Galaxy games. It got replaced with... the ability to shoot stars? Bleh!

There are differences between the series though:

  • In Paper Mario the HP and attack numbers are really low so you can calculate exactly how much damage you need to do in order to take down your opponents.
  • Mario & Luigi on the other hand is about performing even wackier attacks with damage and HP in HUNDREDS.

For me, that was one of the bigger reasons that made both series combat more unique from each other.

On that note, I'm kinda jealous of those players who like Sticker Star and Color Splash. I gave those games a chance but I just can't understand why someone would like the new combat, recycled level themes with little variotions or really anything else about the new games. Well, there's at least something I like: Sticker Star has a really good snow level theme and Color Splash is excellent visually. But that's about it.

I understand the point about Super Paper Mario being the turning point.

But...

Even though Super Paper Mario has different gameplay that isn't as good as in those that came before, I still found it enjoyable. The story though... for me, it's easily the best story in a Mario game s.o. far.

I found both Sticker Star and Color Splash lacking in both the gameplay and story department so for me (and for many others I suppose) these two were the turning point for worse.

Can't say anything about Origami King yet. Maybe I end up borrowing it one day if any of my friends end up buying it.

@Maulbert
I give that game credit especially for the fact that bothered to actually write a great Mario story.

My Paper Mario tier list:

S: Paper Mario Thousand Year Door (The first one I played so you can call my opinion biased or whatever... but for me, this had the best new original themes for levels, great original characters and really solid battle mechanics.)
A: Paper Mario (I played TTYD first so technically every PM has been a disappointment in some way since. Still a great game.)
B+: Mario & Luigi Paper Jam (not technically a Paper Mario game but it has the best battle mechanics in a Mario rpg to date)
B: Super Paper Mario (special mention for having easily the greatest story in a Mario game).
C: -
D: -
E: Paper Mario Sticker Star & Color Splash (Special mention... After these, I swore to not complete any more games in X series just for the sake of having completed every other game so far in X series. Yeah, I don't like these. The Wii U hae nice visuals though).

Innovation alone doesn't make the final product great by default. People have the right to critisize this game. Sure, it's early for that since most of us haven't played this yet. What I'm seeing is that people want to go back to traditional mechanics (that could be made even better) now that Mario & Luigi series is essentially dead. In a few weeks, there will be a lot more comments of this game by users that have actually completed this game.

If this game is good or even then... that's great. I just lost faith for Paper Mario after Sticker Star and Color Splash.
