The Pokémon Company International has teased upcoming celebrations surrounding the series' 25th anniversary next year.
The tease began with a special Pokémon brand performance during the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade today, where a troupe of Pikachu danced to the original Pokémon theme song in New York’s Herald Square.
Following the performance, the company posted a teasing tweet and shared the following statement in a press release:
The Pokémon Company International invites fans around the world to stay tuned for more information about the very special upcoming celebration of Pokémon’s 25th anniversary in 2021.

2021 is not only the 25th anniversary of the series, but also the 15th of the Japanese release of Diamond/Pearl... I hope that "Sinnoh confirmed" is not just a wishful thinking.
The new games next year are probably gen 4 remakes, possibly Let’s go 2.
The rest is going to be Snap, Unite, and probably another unannounced mobile game.
Please don't be the previous potentially leaked "master collection"
@Menchi I’m fairly certain that leak was completely baseless.
While sure is exciting imagining new pokemon stuff, remember everyone to keep expectations in check. We've all been there before
25th anniversary? I'm rooting for Switch releases of the entire mainline series, capped off by Gen 4 remake next holiday season.
If the rumors are true and there will be Gen 4 remakes next year I just hope they don't screw them up, DP Remakes deserve to be as good as they can possibly be
But sadly we are talking about GF here, so that won't be the case
@Munchlax I hope so, but this is Nintendo.
@Munchlax The Master Collection leak was based on an older, more credible leak in the summer. That leak seems to be likely, especially since Game Freak has moved its place of operation. Nintendo seems to really want to do these limited time collections, and I’m sure they’re using their part-ownership of TPC to leverage their vision on the backs of Game Freak, especially after the SWSH controversy. It also makes sense to have a collection of some of the 3DS games, as they’re easier to upscale and appealing to consumers.
What is THAT logo? That is dreadful. Absolutely awful. Ive seen better from a 2 year old.
Gameboy Classic with pokemon confirmed
Anything that's not Sword and Shield related at this point is fine by me. 💁
Looks at shiny piplup in pokemon home
One Day....
I'll be fine with almost anything they announce as long as there isn't a mobile game announced. I have been really enjoying Pokemon Shield lately. I have it turned on right now actually!
I almost don't want them to do Sinnoh remakes. Remakes always use the engine and unique mechanics of their contemporaries within the same gen, neither of which I enjoyed in Sword and Shield.
Limited release Pokémon collection confirmed.
Any chance of GBA version of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald getting released on the Switch?
Did anyone else see the tweeted image and think "Well that's just a line graph showing declining numbers!"
Ash is really excited.
What it's gonna be? A distribution of shiny mythicals?
Ooh I hope so 🙏🏿
Pokemon Go will release a Pikachu wearing a birthday hat with 25 on it... because there aren't enough Pikachus on there.
Not expecting anything good from GF, since they keep on disappointing. Really hope for Gen 4 Remakes, doe.
This is the first I am hearing of a "Master Collection", but a physical collection containing the classic GB/GBC/GBA and perhaps even DS games (though I would rule out the latter out as Gens IV and II are due for remakes) would be absolutely amazing (how many copies would I buy?!), and I assume that Pokémon Home will be supported as well a la Pokémon Bank for the 3DS VC releases.
@Munchlax : I think we will get both Let's Go Gen II and the long-fabled Gen IV remakes back-to-back, but in what order? I obviously cannot say. It would be a waste not to do Let's Go Gen II as the Kanto portion of the map is (mostly) complete. I would prefer that Gen II get the "full" remake treatment, but I'll take what I can get.
I think the new series of the anime may perhaps run a little longer than the typical 3 year run as they will be revisiting the last seven regions as well as the new region, which was perhaps a deliberate strategy to revisit old material to familiarise the new generation with the 900+ Pokémon that currently exist, and to allow the higher-ups more time to consider the direction that the franchise will go next.
Gloria dakiNAH, I'm just kidding, it'll be:
Pokémon: Let's Go, Squirtle/Bulbasaur/Charmander
Next year should be big in terms of Pokemon game releases:
> New Pokemon Snap
> Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Remake
> Pokemon Unite
> Pokemon Sleep
> Detective Pikachu 2 (maybe?)
It's pretty obvious... It's the year where the mainline games will blend together with Pokemon Smiles
I expect to have a lot of Pokemon fun next year. I also expect the Pokemon haters (Oh I'm sorry, the totally real fans) who are perpetually unhappy with the franchise to continue to be unhappy no matter what Pokemon does.
Pokemon could release several outstanding games, smash sales records, put out games, movies, cards, music, anime, that all does extremely well and is enjoyed by literally tens or hundreds of millions of people world wide, but the vocal minority will drone on about how disappointing it all is and how it should have been better and blah blah blah.
What should happen:
-DP remakes
-New Pokemon Snap
-Pokemon Unite
-Pokemon Sleep
-Detective Pikachu 2
-Gen 3 collection on the eShop with HOME compatibility
What will happen:
-Gen 1 on the eShop with each game being £10 and delisted on March 31st
-DP remakes but the battle zone and Sinnoh underground is gone entirely
-Pokemon Unite
-Some sort of new mobile game
Yet another reminder I actually need to get around and play one of the two Let's Go games and either Sw/Sh lol. I'm slightly behind as usual. 😅
@Bobb lest we forget the Pokemon Unite reveal
Its my sincere hope that Ash Ketchum is retired, hopefully Pikachu's tears run out & he turns back to stone.
Detective Pikachu 2 (probably the game and the movie), Pokemon Snap 2, and Pokemon Unite launching in the same year would fit. In terms of notable spin-offs, there's a chance that an all new Mystery Dungeon game could happen using the assets of the remake. They also have Sw/Sh's engine, so... I guess we can see the Daimond and Pearl remake? I liked Gen 4, but it always felt kind of bland to me, and I'm not sure how Gam Freak would handle a remake with new elements (Mega Evolutions, Z-Moves, and/or Dynamaxing)
For more off of the wall guesses, I'm hoping for a new Pokemon Ranger game, but since those relied on the DS' touch screen, I understand why they wouldn't want to touch that right now. Maybe a new Trading Card video game, as opposed to the online version. That one is fine, but I like to play on my own when I can, and the GB version was cool. A Pokemon Masters port for Switch would be nice. Also, maybe a new anime like Twilight Wings, or based on the manga?
Honestly, I'm just hoping for some really crazy stuff.
Just keep your expectations low and you’ll never be disappointed.
Another crap game?
I'm not a huuuge fan (I'm finishing Let's Go, eventually play Go and already bought Shield, never play anything before) and as a newbie I'm satisfied with:
Let's Go Gen 2
Snap
Gen 1-7 collection simple ports, but with Home/Go support and without version exclusives (1 Gen 1 game, 1 Gen 2 game...) needing trade only for trade evolutions
Announcement of Gen 9 for the next year.
@AZD1222 or a game and watch with pokemon
What happened to Sleep though?
Something good please. A 2021 release for New Pokemon Snap, a Pokken Tournament sequel, Gen 4 remakes... anything good.
No more stuff like Pokemon Home, please. I really had no problem playing 5€ a year for Poke Bank. Pokemon Home though... Not supporting that one.
@BabyYoshi12
Todays society is awake 24/7 so no more need for Sleep.
I think the Diamond & Pearl remake meme might finally become a reality next year. A decent number of little things like the Sinnoh Fossils being the only ones exempt in SwSh and the fact that half of Sinnoh's small Dex isn't in the games either make me a little suspicious. My expectations are low regardless. More interested/hopeful for the new Snap releasing in 2021 and being good, and a remake of Explorers of Sky since they have basically everything they need for that laid out for them. Unless they're all badly done, Sinnoh Remakes, a new Pokémon Snap, a remake of arguable the best spin-off, a couple of crappy mobile games like Unite & Sleep, and some other surprises would make a hell of a 25th Anniversary.
Edit: Oh right, and the Detective Pikachu game... which I still don't think we know if it will be a 'definitive edition' of the original that tells you the ending we got in the movie, or a sequel, which would be weird because of, well, the movie 'spoiling' the twist.
I would like to think that we would get news on the Pokemon Snap remake, and possibly a remake of Ruby and Sapphire. Personally, if they do remake one of the classic titles like Gold and Silver for example I would like for them not to use the Let's Go formula. While nice I think most players would prefer the classic method of catching Pokemon.
@Silly_G The only problem with the idea of Let's Go 2 is that Gen 2 doesn't have big posterchild faces like Pikachu & Eevee. Though TBH for $60 Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee should've had Johto as the post-game. Would've been interesting to see Johto before the 3 year skip, and Let's Go was really short for 60 bucks.
@Torakaka We already got regular remakes of Ruby & Sapphire and Gold & Silver, and the GSC remakes are some of the best Pokémon games...
@shoeses True, but mind you those were on the GBA/DS era. I'm willing to bet that they would remake them for Switch to appeal to the fans of that particular series.
@shoeses : Ideally, yes. I have to disagree about the "poster child" remark though. Pikachu is the "poster child" of the franchise, and I would be hard pressed to think of any other Pokémon from subsequent generations that come anywhere close to being as universally recognisable. Let's Go Mew would have been awesome, but that would require the suspension of disbelief that a 10 year old trainer is given an incredibly rare Pokémon as their first, and that just doesn't make sense from an in-universe perspective.
I wouldn't have even thought that Eevee was that popular. Meowth, Jigglypuff, and Clefairy would have made for more interesting choices, IMO. Psyduck is also really popular, thanks to the classic anime, and apparently it was considered as a Let's Go mascot, but of course they couldn't have two yellow mascots.
Togepi, Marill, and Snubbull are perhaps the most recognisable non-legendary/starter Pokémon in Gen II, and I think Togepi and Marill would be the most logical choices from a marketing point of view. Ledyba would be a ridiculously adorable choice as well. There are also other baby Pokémon such as Elekid, Magby, and Smoochum that could be considered as the mascots. Come to think of it, Gen II has no shortage of potential mascots. It's Gens III+ that would struggle if the Let's Go sub-series were to continue, but Game Freak would find a way. Let's Go Plusle and Minun for Gen III?
The announcement solely coming from TPCi is a bit iffy, you’d think that a milestone anniversary would at least have at least one official Japanese Twitter account also celebrate the event as well.
That said we already know what one of the components of this anniversary is: another premium TCG set (the assumption is that it’ll be our equivalent of Japan’s Shiny Star V set) being released in January/February.
As a big fan of the Pokemon franchise, 2021 should definitely be an interesting year, having said that, I'm going in with low expectations as to not be disappointed. As it is, the only thing I'm really expecting is the previously announced New Pokemon Snap game, anything else that's Pokemon related, that we may or may not get is an added bonus.
@Silly_G If you didn't know Eevee was popular I'd assume you haven't played a Pokémon game or interacted with a part of the Pokémon fanbase ever. Meowth, Jigglypuff, & Psyduck have never been very popular outside of the original anime run specifically, and IDK where the hell you pulled Clefairy from other than it was originally supposed to be Ash's starter, which is irrelevant . 'Out of touch' wouldn't even be accurate with these takes.
I've never heard of a person who's favorite Pokémon is Marill or Snubbull, let alone the crappy Baby Pokémon from Gen 2, let alone MANY people. While Pikachu is THE posterchild, I'm referring to Pokémon that are ultra popular and super recognizable to people who don't even play but know of Pokémon. Despite what you say, Gen 2 doesn't exactly have stars quite as bright. I don't think things like Pichu, Togepi, & Marill are going to be getting results like 2 of the most popular Pokémon ever, not to mention they don't have many classic Events or 8 Evolutions to draw unique Moves from.
And Let's Go Plusle & Minun would be the worst idea yet considering they learn the same Moves. Only way I could see that working is if it was one game that featured Double Battles exclusively like Colosseum, they brought Abilities into Let's Go, and they gave you both Plusle and Minun to you as Starters and gave them unique Doubles Moves to learn.
@Torakaka DS & 3DS, the latter of which JUST ended. Ruby & Sapphire remakes are 110% out of the question, and the only chance Gold & Silver would get one is if they DID do the Let's Go formula.
Unless there's something Gen 2 or 3 related, I'm not interested. Looking back for me, the only great things about Gen 4 were HG and SS, and Diamond and Pearl started a kind of decline in the series for me, so I couldn't care less about remakes of those.
@jarvismp Yo that logo is Pikachu's tail. Nailed it!
I'm hyped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wooooo Pokemon 2021
I'm really really hoping for some good DPPT remakes... with the way the series has gone recently I don't have much hope.
I just want some really amazing, well thought-out games with a whole bunch of love put into them.
