Re: Talking Point: Great Game, Poor Performance - When Does A Bad Frame Rate Not Really Matter?

Late

It's funny how back in the day frame rate issues could add to the experience. There was something cool about the way games slowed down when there was bunch of stuff on screen. It made some shooters easier since you had more time to react.

Kirby's Adventure is one of my favorite games ever but if it released today, people would spend their time talking about how badly it runs instead of how good the game is. I still find it funny that the game seems to do a collision check for every frame when going through a Shotzo while invincible.

I'm not saying games shouldn't run great. I'm just saying that the perception has changed over time and people know now that frame drops don't happen on purpose.

Re: Mini Review: Dr. Mario 64 - Diagnosis: A Bit Rubbish

Late

Unusually harsh review. I agree that the game is harder than it needs to be and the selection of game modes isn't the greatest but it doesn't do anything else wrong per say. Well, other than the irritating music and sound effects. I played through story mode with both characters on every difficulty (+ couple of attempts at character unlocks) and the music was the only thing I disliked.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 30th)

Late

A Hat in Time - Third world. I have fourth unlocked as well.

Dr. Mario 64 - Beat easy and normal with both characters. Trying to get through hard mode.

Corpse Party (3DS) - Just started. Replayed through the first hour or so that I'd already played years ago. Now it's time for new stuff.

Karaoke Joysound for Nintendo Switch - Singing some Japanese songs.

Re: Best Ace Attorney Games Of All Time

Late

Seeing games like Investigations, Apollo Justice and Spirit of Justice so low on the list didn't seem right, then I realized there aren't that many Ace Attorney games to begin with so they can't be much higher. That just speaks to the quality of these games. Dual Destinies is the only one I dislike.

Re: Uh-Oh, Nintendo Switch Online's N64 Games Might Be 50Hz In Europe

Late

@carlos82 Each game is built differently. There's no universal solution since the data is structured differently in every game. Switching textures around is easier since it's just an image file. It takes the same amount of space on the surface. Text on the other hand may fit on one row in one language but needs multiple text boxes in other. So the game should also replicate parts of the code. The additional data also needs to reside somewhere. US versions don't have all the characters like ü and ò ready in the rom data. There'll also be 3rd party games and it would probably be their job to provide the same functionality since they own the source code. In other words, it's just too much work for something like this. It all comes back to money. It's not worth it.

Re: N64 Gems Custom Robo And Its Sequel Are Coming To Nintendo Switch Online In Japan

Late

@Stocksy What extra cash? It's a subscription system. I seriously doubt they'd make the time and money back they'd use on translating lesser known titles like Custom Robo. It's not going to sell more subscriptions.

I always looked at these Japanese exclusives as a nice extra, added value. I've been playing bunch of Japanese only NES & SNES Online games since you can just go and download the apps from Japanese eShop. They don't all require you to be an expert of the language and some games have regional differences like better soundtrack.

Re: Pokémon Unite Producer Thanks Fans For Feedback And Details Latest Patch

Late

@secret333 I think the important term here is unfair advantage. You can pay for item enhancers to level up your items but you can also earn them just by playing. You could easily get every single item and level up the 3 or 4 you use within couple of weeks. The only place where these items matter are in ranked play and they're only needed once you've reached high enough rank, by which point you've upgraded your items for free.

This update also made all this even more trivial. Item enhancers are now easier to get, you can earn super item enhancers (which they give you 3 to start with) that level up one item all the way to max level while returning all the previous enhancers that you may have used on that specific item and they also added an item which temporarily sets an item's level to its max for a week (you also get 3 of these).

I personally don't see any reason to spend money if you just want to upgrade your items but I can still see people paying for costumes.

Re: Random: Check Out These Mock-Ups Of Game Boy For Nintendo Switch Online

Late

@skywake I mean, I Googled the same list myself before posting but... thanks? Bunch of the games are ports, in which case they're better off releasing the console versions. I was also asking which ones are great and the Wikipedia article doesn't provide an answer to that question.

I'm just curious since I didn't own a Game Boy as a kid (although I wanted one) and I've never heard of anyone saying how good GB was for multiplayer games.

Re: Random: Check Out These Mock-Ups Of Game Boy For Nintendo Switch Online

Late

The weirdest thing about GB/GBC games being added is that the NES and SNES apps have Online in their name and they marketed them as a way to play multiplayer games over the internet. About half of the games have some kind of multiplayer component.

How many great multiplayer games are there for Game Boy? Games that aren't ports of NES and SNES games. Pokémon is obviously the first thing that comes to mind when you think about GB in general but I somehow still have doubts they'd add any main series games. I'd love to be wrong.

I don't know how many actually use the online component of these apps but it's the direction Nintendo has taken with its old catalog so I think they're going to keep it that way. N64 would've made more sense in that regard.

Re: Talking Point: It's A Golden Era For Video Game Music Fans, So How Do You Listen?

Late

Mix of Spotify, YouTube, Bandcamp and CDs. I would rather have everything in one place. Still waiting for the day Nintendo adds their music on Spotify, other than the few Kirby soundtracks. And even those were added because of HAL, not Nintendo, as far as I know. Importing CDs is expensive so I haven't been doing it much lately. The latest physical soundtrack I got was for Bravely Default II.

Re: 'Pokémon Presents' Live Presentation Announced For Wednesday, 18th August

Late

I've been waiting for a presentation for couple of weeks. Knew it'd be soon. I want to see both games again. Remakes to see if they've added anything new to them to make them a worthy purchase and Legends Arceus because I just need to see more in general. Curious if it looks any different now. It needs to be pretty polished by now if they want to stick with the January date.

Re: Memory Pak: The Exquisite Weirdness Of The Sims: Bustin' Out

Late

@San_D @BANJO I had an N-Gage as well. Everyone who didn't own one always made fun of it but in recent years I've seen more people like me who had one and agree that it wasn't even all that bad. Or maybe it's just nostalgia.

I had Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Bomberman and Rayman 3. Beat all 3 multiple times. THPS was a solid port of the original game, only missing some music. Bomberman, as far as I know, wasn't a port of an existing Bomberman game. Story mode was fun. Never got to try out bluetooth multiplayer. Rayman 3 is the same game that's on GBA. At least for the most part. Fun game.

It's also fun hearing one of you had N95. I wanted one but ultimately ended up with N81. I didn't get any N-Gage games for that device but I think it had a demo of Metal Gear Solid Mobile. I was really bad at it (I'm still not good at stealth games to this day) but I found it fascinating that you could take pictures with the phone's camera and it would create a camouflage based on the picture.

Re: Memory Pak: The Exquisite Weirdness Of The Sims: Bustin' Out

Late

I used to play this as a kid and really liked it despite not understanding everything that was going on due to language barrier. I bought a legitimate copy ~10 years later and still enjoyed it. I never finished it though so that description of the ending caught me off guard. It's a silly game.

Re: Pokémon Unite Is Adding A New Monster Tomorrow

Late

Downloaded it yesterday but haven't actually played yet. This is my first look at the roster. What a weird and surprising lineup. Gen 1 gets a lot of love for obvious reason but there are also some Pokémon in the mix that normally don't get much if any attention. I'd like someone from Gen 2 too.

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

Late

Already ordered the limited edition.

Game prices are all over the place nowadays. I'm sure other developers would love to price their games higher / not go on sale constantly but it's much more difficult now. The market isn't what it used to be. Yet, Nintendo knows the value of their products and they'll keep charging premium price while people are willing to pay it.

Re: Poll: How Hyped Are You For Nintendo's E3 Direct?

Late

My niche title I'm waiting for is Daigasso/Jam with the Band. I kind of expected it near Switch's launch but it never happened. Don't think it'll happen today either, especially since I don't think it's really an E3 kind of reveal, but would love to be wrong. I don't really have any specific expectations, I just go in and see what they have in store.

Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind
In chapter 4 or 5. Haven't been playing as much after I got Joysound but I'm still slowly making progress.

New Pokémon Snap
5 or so Pokémon left to find. All but one in the snow/cave region. I believe I also have 3 branching paths I haven't found yet.

Civilization VI
Thought I'd play a quick game of Civ since I haven't done so for a while.

Karaoke JOYSOUND for Nintendo Switch
For Japanese practice and for fun. It's funny how it shows Nintendo trailers in the background while singing. The only official game from Nintendo I know of where Kirby and the F word can be on screen at the same time.

Re: Nintendo Reveals The Top 15 Most-Downloaded Switch Games In May 2021 (Europe)

Late

@RainbowGazelle I'd say physical is the more expensive option in most countries. I took a quick look at Super Mario Odyssey's prices where I live, lowest price is 54€ shipped, go to a store and you're most likely spending 60€, go to eShop, get yourself a voucher and you can get the same game for 50€ immediately or wait for a sale and get it for 40€.

Of course sometimes you can get a good deal and then I go for physical instead. Like when I preordered Pikmin 3 for Wii U for 30€.

Re: What Are Your Favourite Switch Online SNES And NES Games? Nintendo Wants To Know

Late

@BanjoPickles True. But they're not free and don't have online multiplayer. I was thinking about listing Samurai Shodown too but it's already available with online multiplayer via Collection. It would still be a nice addition, just to raise awareness of the series. It's not like having Wild Guns Reloaded already on Switch stopped the original game from coming to the service.

Re: There's A New Pokétoon Short, And It's Bloody Gorgeous

Late

I loved it. I started self studying Japanese last year and I'm slowly realizing how much I know now. It was really easy to follow along. I've been so focused on reading Japanese that it's nice to see my brain is fast enough to process some spoken Japanese too.

Also, Fire Blast makes so much more sense now. I always wondered as a kid why it's shaped like that but once I heard the name of the move in Japanese, it just clicked. It's literally just called 大文字, "the character big", and the kanji for big is 大. It also seems to be based on a festival where they light up fires to form said character.

Re: Review: Super Bomberman R Online - A Battle Royale Blast Defused By Long Waits And F2P Frippery

Late

Haven't experienced any issues besides long loading times. Those aren't a deal breaker either. I tend to be in top 10 so I'll get to play for a good while before having to find another game.

Not a fan of the pricing model. I wish you'd be able to get everything eventually without paying. I wasn't a fan of character specific abilities in R so I don't really need the extra characters and the regular characters are some of the best ones anyway.

Not sure how long I'll keep playing. I like it but it's somewhat lacking. I would like some stage gimmicks but that would probably make the game too hectic.

Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir
Just about to finish the game. The first half was nice but the second half is really good. It eases you in and once you're comfy, stuff starts to happen. Will move onto the second game as soon as I've finished this one.

Burnout Paradise
I grew up playing Burnout 3 and Revenge on my brother's XBOX and I also played Paradise on PC back in the day but now I've returned after a really long break from the series. I like just driving around Paradise City breaking things and completing time trials but the races and other events just aren't as fun. The races just don't work as well in an open world. I miss Burnout 3. That's the game they really should remake.

New Pokémon Snap
I believe I'm still missing 11 Pokémon. I also want to find all the branching paths and I'm missing 3 or 4. I know which stages they're in thanks to the achievement system but I haven't figured out how to trigger them. Would like to go for 100% but not sure if it'll hold my interest for that long. I'm already 30 hours in. This is pretty much a perfect sequel.

Super Bomberman R Online
I downloaded it and had time for one match on Thursday. I already know from the little I played that I could sink many hours into it. I used to play Bomberman a lot. Mega Bomberman (Bomberman '94) with friends and family, Bomberman for the N-Gage on the go and Bomberman Blast online. The friend group I have now isn't as much into Bomberman so I've not played it much lately either.

Re: Nintendo Download: 27th May (Europe)

Late

Already downloaded and played one match of Super Bomberman R Online. Works way better online than the original game but that was a given. Much more up to my alley than Pac-Man 99.

I plan on getting World's End Club but I'm not done with Famicom Detective Club yet so it'll have to wait a week or two.

Re: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Gets Its Nintendo Switch Release Date

Late

I grew up playing THPS on N-Gage of all things and loved it. I had a suspicion from the start that they'd port the remake to Switch eventually so I held off buying the PC version. I want to play the game on a handheld again and this time with more than 2 songs. The N-Gage port was really good otherwise but the music selection was really small. Not sure if it was just 2 songs but it felt like it.

I'm glad it comes in June and not in May or July. I haven't been buying that many new games at release for a year or two but this spring/summer period for this year is stacked with games I want to play.
