When Chicory: A Colorful Tale came out on June 10th this year, it quickly garnered a lot of attention and accolades for its story, its art, and its music. You play as Pizza (or, well, whatever your favourite food is — that's the main character's name) who gains control of a magical paintbrush in a world that's lost all its colour.
Sounds cute, right? Well, it's deceptively cute. The story deals with much darker themes of imposter syndrome, anxiety, and self doubt, while providing players with a simple-yet-engaging mechanic of painting the black-and-white world around you.
And now, finally, it's coming to the Nintendo Switch!
Developed by Wandersong creator Greg Lobanov, with art by Alexis Dean-Jones and Madeline Berger, sound design by Em Halberstadt (Night In The Woods, Ikenfell, Untitled Goose Game) and charmingly-Zelda-esque music by Celeste and Minecraft composer Lena Raine, Chicory: A Colorful Tale is basically a who's who of indie games.
The game is live on the Nintendo Switch eShop now, with a price tag of $19.99.

this should've been the one last announcement, surprisingly poignant story, really fun base mechanic, and probably the best version of the top-down zelda 1/lttp style gameplay i've played in years (obviously without the fighting, for the most part), it's right at home on the switch
being cute as sin helps too, I guess!
Trailer looks pretty cool. Haven’t heard of this one.
I don't have a proper gaming computer, so I've sadly missed out on this one. But it feels like a game destined to be on Switch, so I'm excited to try!
Out of the shadow drops today, this is the one that looks interesting too me.
@moodycat what about the price?
@moodycat i was put off by it as well but honestly there's more than enough content to justify it (not to mention the work put in), i cant check right now but i easily put 30-40 hours in on pc
of course, part of that is gonna be how much you enjoy drawing in it though, so keep that in mind
Looks interesting, but I'll wait until a sale personally. Maybe when it hits 50% off.
Anyone know if this was better than Wandersong? The writing there was decent but I felt like it could've used a bit more refinement.
This one was the highlight of the show. Finished Wandersong recently, and would love to try something new from Greg.
Looks cute. Any good? I'm not a creative type, at all, so I'm not sure how enjoyable this would be for me.
@Abeedo i'd say it was, yeah. same sort of humor/loose style but better theming
hell yeah. Almost bought it on PS4 last week, but was hoping it would come over soon enough.
It was weird seeing this dropped in a sizzle reel. I would've given it more attention.
I liked what I saw of this game in the Showcase and I love games about bringing color to a BW world (fond memories of playing deBlob and a few others back in the day). Reading a few reviews and also learning that it's from the makers of Wandersong makes it an instabuy for me.
An interesting and artistic title with a cool idea that's just two generations too late. This would had been a fun innovative game for the Nintendo DS back in 2005-2010. Imagine using the stylus for the brush in this game, that would be wonderful.
@somebread That's good then. Look forward to picking it up.
My favourite game of the year, glad to see it make its way to Switch. Touch and motion controls will be awesome options for people.
@moodycat is $20 an egregious price tag these days?
Played this on PlayStation, amazing, time to play it again.
This looks like a game that could've worked out perfectly on Wii U.
@moodycat Nintendo fans when a game costs money and isn't giving to them for free
Anyone else having the game constantly crash on the title screen after todays patch? It was running perfectly fine yesterday...
Edit:
It is caused by the savagame of the unpatched release.
@TheBigK If you like 2D Zelda this is a no brainer. No artistic skill needed. My game of the year for 2021.
@Lostdragon I haven't noticed any technical hiccups (or any update, for that matter). Maybe my original download was already patched? I'm on version 1.0.1 and according to my Switch, that's the latest version of the game.
@Kochambra yeah that is what it has been updated to. If I delete my safefile which I did create last night after it was out, then it starts without issue. Loosing over a hour of progress >.>
One of the games of the year! <3
