Re: Reggie Fils-Aime on Why the Wii U Was Misunderstood

JpGamerGuy90

The gamepad was a novelty that was quickly abandoned and as such was basically just tacking on 80 bucks on a system that got maybe 3-4 high profile releases a year. No one wants to pay money for a console that barely gets games. In addition, 32 gb of storage space is a joke in today's world. No reason they couldn't have had 200+ gb of space given how cheap hdd are nowadays but no they wanted to shoehorn in more gimmicky crap.

Further, their online is still dreadful. I can't think of one game that offers anything close to good online. Splatoon is the closest but even that lacks basic features like voice chat, or even things like load out selection without having to exit out of the lobby and don't even get me started on the lack of mode/map selection.

Honestly the Wii U will go down as Nintendo's worst system. While there were some great games ultimately Nintendo really didn't do a single thing right and it's comments like the one Reggie made that has me furious with Nintendo. It's not that people didn't understand the Wii U, it's that they're smart enough to know what a polished turd looks like and that's what the Wii U was... a polished turd.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo NX Deal Is A Vindication Of Nvidia's Shield Program

JpGamerGuy90

People trying to rationalize Nintendo using the more powerful chip. Nintendo isn't "playing with power," anymore, and I guarantee they will be using the X1 or a modified version of it. They don't play the power game, they like affordable consoles. A wii u on the go is pretty neat despite the specs not being great if you hook it up to use it like a regular console. A NX with Wii Uish power for 199.99 is a pretty good deal.

In regards to Nintendo rumors I usually suggest believing the ones about how "weak" the new Nintendo system is as Nintendo consoles lately have been very weak and time and time again, whether about their online or w.e, we've been shown Nintendo doesn't really care about what people think, they'll march to their own drum for better or worse. This way you'll be pleasantly surprised. Sure, it's a pessimistic way of looking at things but then again, Nintendo had all of one game last e3 announced and we got a few other surprises we didn't expect.

Re: Multiple Sources Outline a Portable NX With Detachable Controllers, Including a 'Base Station' for TV

JpGamerGuy90

I actually thought a dedicated handheld was a bad idea given the market but if Nintendo makes a singular system third party support won't necessarily matter as much because they now can make games for just one system instead of two. Clearly they couldn't support both the 3ds and the Wii U last gen and now they will just have the one console. Animal Crossing, Mario, Kid Icarus (hopefully), Zelda, and more all on one system. It's actually a pretty good idea.

Re: Hands On: Painting a Clearer Picture of Paper Mario: Color Splash

JpGamerGuy90

Honestly if battles are basically pointless can we just ditch the turn based combat for something real time a la super paper Mario?

Also complete lack of original character designs are once again proof Nintendo no longer cares about what makes the series fun. It's not just the lack of RPG elements it's the complete lack of any originality whatsoever.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo NX in Multiple Form Factors Could Shake Up the Video Game Industry

JpGamerGuy90

@Lizuka Like it or not, Nintendo cannot support 2 consoles anymore. The Wii U was stretch very thin oftentimes while 3ds got more games. Then 3ds stopped getting releases from the big N as of late. With rising dev costs a unified console makes sense. It may not be what's usually par for the course of Nintendo but with mobile gaming taking a huge hit with cell phones and tablets (3ds sold pretty well no doubt but no even close to what the ds line did, also low attach rate) in addition to the aforementioned higher dev costs Nintendo really can only focus on one system if they cannot get 3rd party support, which as of late is almost assuredly the case.

Re: Nintendo Producer Highlights How Paper Mario: Color Splash Improves on Sticker Star

JpGamerGuy90

Honestly Sticker Star had zero incentive to fight so halfway thru it became a glorified walking simulator. Seems you get a little something for your trouble for fights in Color Splash but once again there isn't a huge reason to battle. If they were going to make the battles basically worthless I would've preferred a return to Super Paper Mario style side scrolling so I can just attack enemies on the fly if I so choose.

I feel Nintendo has been slowly killing off the story in Mario RPGs. Dream Team was the start as it had ridiculous amounts of backtracking (even for Mario and Luigi standards) and Paper Jam proceeded to remove all unique characters and gave us the regulars. Color Slash has even less than that. Hell, I'll settle for a shy guy in a clown outfit. Don't buy the whole "You'll know who the character is by their personality" tripe either. The amount of effort into that retort is the same amount of effort put into this game.

I'm not mad the game isn't like the original Paper Mario, I'm mad the game looks half-assed and boring. Paper Mario could take place in any number of genres and be decent if effort was applied, of which color splash has none.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U and 3DS Games of 2016 - Summer Edition

JpGamerGuy90

Think the last release I was excited for for either system was Monster Hunter 4. Last couple years haven't really been kind to either system, clearly the resources have shifted to the NX as we aren't really getting much first party stuff for either console this year. New Pokemon looks amazing so that's pretty much my only "must buy."

Sad to see Mario Party and Paper Mario continuing the downward trend. A game like Mario Party 2 or 3 on the go is what we want, not this, whatever this is. The mario rpgs (both kinds) have had their souls sucked out (no new characters in paper jam and color splash is continuing that trend with even more generic characters/enemies) so I can't say I'm excited for Color Splash. Looks great from an art direction but everything I've seen is just, so bad.

Re: My Nintendo Really Wants You To Use Miitomo, But Only Offers 2 Points in New Daily 'Mission'

JpGamerGuy90

Hoping third parties jump on board with the NX because Nintendo could benefit from offering discounts on games the average Nintendo console owner doesn't already have. I can't get excited for the sales because I probably have the games that'd be worth buying, in addition the Wii U has such terrible storage that idk why they emphasize digital sales so much, 3ds is in a similar boat.

On the subject of Miitomo, personally I don't find the app very good, once the novelty of seeing Miis cuss is over the app is too bland. It's like Tomadachi life but not nearly as customizable. The app has been on my phone sucking up space/battery life for weeks and I've used it maybe 3 times. Outside of changing clothes you can't really do anything with it. Would love to see Nintendo offer apps that don't get old after a handful of uses.

Re: Editorial: An Ode To The Wii U GamePad, Nintendo's Mad But Brilliant Controller

JpGamerGuy90

Honestly the gamepad will go down as one of the biggest Nintendo misses. Drove up the price of an underpowered console and failed to bring in the audience they were seeking. I personally didn't mind the gamepad but most of the "features" were tacked on and completely unnecessary in a world where semi-transparent GUIs can allow for menu navigation on the fly.

Off-tv play was a neat gimmick but it has little relevance in a world where there is about one TV per person in most countries. Who wants to watch a game on a low res screen with washed it colors when they have a big TV to watch it on? The answer is no one.

I'd also like to point out amiibos succeeded for their appeal as a collectible not because of their game uses. Gamepad having NFC is irrelevant as it wasn't used much.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo Did A Solid Job at E3 2016, But That Didn't Ease Long-Term Concerns

JpGamerGuy90

If they aren't going to compete in the hardware race why bother making two different consoles? Nintendo clearly cannot support two systems at once anymore with rising development costs so why launch two consoles when you can just focus all your efforts on one. Since the Wii U didn't get any third party support we had months at a time with no releases. 3ds hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows of late (mostly jrpgs which I'm burned out on) so one console might be the way to go. We only really have one more generation of dedicated handhelds being relevant so why wait, start now with something unique. A home console with a controller that functions as essentially a wifi receiver you can take with you to play games over wifi?

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's E3 2016?

JpGamerGuy90

Zelda didn't impress me. It looks good but it was just a of running around open fields and forests which were mostly devoid of enemies. The Rock Golem enemy was pretty neat but the combat looks the same as it ever has so not much to hype there.

Was looking for more story information or info on how dungeons work, or snippets of anything remotely more interesting than cooking and picking up enemy items. I see a lot of folks putting down other open world games as Zelda was "Open world gaming done right," when all it's doing is borrowing from other games with next to no original ideas. Now that might be impressive to some but honestly I expected to see more of a marriage between Zelda and open world games not see more of the latter.

I'm certain the game will turn out fine but I felt they could have done a better job showcasing the game. They want to avoid spoilers but I'm curious if they really couldn't be bothered to augment he game enough for a demo or if they skimped on the story so much to give you that feeling of isolation the tagline seems to indicate. If that's the case this may be the first Zelda game I skip.

Re: E3 2016: Check Out the Paper Mario: Color Splash E3 Trailer

JpGamerGuy90

Nintendo doesn't care what their fans want it appears. Sticker Star had the benefit of brand appeal, on a popular system and no one knew what Sticker Star would be like so no wonder it sold well. I know good sales is a good thing but does Nintendo not even bother looking on improvements? This game looks to have all the same issues the first had. Same generic NPCS, no reason to fight, bland level design. Wouldn't surprise me if Bowser was mute once again.

The sad thing is this game is going to sell because the Wii U has nothing coming out this year and desperation will cause people to buy anything and Mario slapped on something seems "safe" to most people.

It's bad but I want this game to bomb so they can either kill the series they're continuing to ruin and just make Mario and Luigi the rpg series or start fresh and try to make Paper Mario good again. i'll settle for super paper Mario 2... I don't need TTYD 2.

Re: E3 2016: Full Title Of Wii U And NX Legend Of Zelda Revealed

JpGamerGuy90

Impressed by what? Yes the initial impressions are awesome but the world seemed rather empty, they didn't show us anything about the game plot-wise, character-wise, etc and honestly it looks like every other open world game out there atm. They seem to be focus on the open world rather than show us what actually makes a Zelda game a Zelda game.

It's a bad first impression overall as it really doesn't tell us anything. Yes, they're showing us gameplay later but note they are choosing yet another open location to demonstrate. Wonder why they aren't trying to highlight the series's strength rather than try to follow the example other games gave set

Re: Talking Point: Revealing an Innovative Legend of Zelda at E3 Could Provide a Timely Boost for Nintendo

JpGamerGuy90

They punted this year and there's really nothing Zelda can do to restore the faith. The game can be amazing but it's really only going to keep the Wii U owners around for awhile longer. The real trump card is the NX which now NEEDS to be powerful as the Xbox Scorpio has been revealed with some pretty decent horsepower under the hood. Nintendo cannot afford another Wii U situation and will need to showcase they have the hardware and the procedures in place to get third party support back, they cannot do it on their own anymore.

Re: Soapbox: Can Mario Party Return To Its Former Glory?

JpGamerGuy90

Nintendo literally can never stop tinkering with their franchises. Sometimes same is good. Mario Party hit its zenith with 3 and slowly went downhill culminating with the abomination that was 10. (Not to mention only being playable with wiimotes, never have I bought a game that's main mode needed a controller that doesn't come with the damn system, absolute horse ****).

Other series that have met a similar fate: Paper Mario and Metroid.

Re: Nintendo Life Weekly: New Game in Development for Wii U, Super Mario Maker in Real Life, and More

JpGamerGuy90

@HSuzumiyaVI Lost Reavers is crap, that game is literal garbage and that sale you mention is comprised of games most people who own a wii u probably already have and not to mention the sale prices aren't exactly steam-sale quality.

His point was that there isn't any major wii u titles in development which is correct. Zelda is pretty much it. Project Giant Robot was probably incorporated into Star Fox like
Guard was (there's an article on this back when Star Fox was teased), the rest is just physical releases of eshop titles. Wii U isn't getting anything remotely close to a new Mario, Metroid, or F-zero.

Re: The Nintendo@E3 2016 Miiverse Community is Live and Full of Unrealistic Expectations

JpGamerGuy90

Seems like each e3 our expectations had to get lower and lower. At first it was like "I'm hoping for smash, kart and a new metroid," to "Hope for one surprise game that hasn't been shown for the last year," and now it's just "I'm hoping we at least get some new dlc." Nintendo has nosedived this gen. The Nintendo magic has been mere smoke and mirrors.

NX better be awesome. Idc if it's a handheld or a console but it better be full of games without significant droughts. Nintendo used to be able to cater to everyone. Now it caters to almost no one but the die hards and even they take issue at the lack of games.

Re: Editorial: With Lowered Expectations E3 Can Still Be Full of Nintendo Magic

JpGamerGuy90

I wonder what will become of color splash. I don't believe the reaction was positive, I personally was very disappointed in the sticker star-like gameplay, so I'm wondering if Nintendo is quietly just going to release it later in the year to little fanfare a la Mario Tennis. I understand it's a "big" title but let's look at last years "big" titles to end 2015 and we can see Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis were it.

I don't understand how a console can go 3-4 months at a time inbetween game releases, even Nintendo's Wii had a wealth of titles up until 2011. While it's clear the Wii U is dead, the Wii U was never really alive as it struggled to get any form of consistent releases.

Hoping the NX is good as their Wii U has probably been their worst effort yet. Excluding Virtua Boy, as that was more of a toy than a legitimate gaming console

Re: Guide: A Nintendo Fan's Breakdown of E3 2016's Press Conferences and Events

JpGamerGuy90

Personally I don't see this e3 ending well for the Big N. The new Zelda will be good, but it really cannot possibly live up to the quality it'll need to be for it to be pretty much Nintendo's only game they're going to show in depth. A lot more can go wrong than can go right, for example let's say the "new gameplay" in Zelda is universally hated, what then? Nintendo cannot backtrack on a game with that much dev time now, it'll be market suicide for Nintendo.

Once their Zelda3... er e3 plans were announced I lost all interest. The treehouse stuff bores the hell out of me as I really only need snippets of gameplay for my hype as I'm not a fan of watching people play video games. In addition to the rather dry commentary we end up getting.

I will say this, it's nice they're up front with how bad their e3 will be instead of trying to stretch 10 minutes of announcements into 50 minutes of disappointment like the last 2 years.

Re: Feature: Miitomo's Initial Success Doesn't Mask Lessons to be Learned for Future Nintendo Apps

JpGamerGuy90

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. The app sucks. It's a generic app with a Nintendo skin. Once you get past the novelty of Miis cussing up a storm it gets old. The app also drains battery even when not in use until you disable it in your task manager so it's just a boring resource hog.

It's a boring app with microtransactions, it's not the worst app ever but by no means is it good.

Re: My Nintendo Discount Applied to Miitomo Drop Game Tickets Reward

JpGamerGuy90

Mynintendo is pretty terrible. Discounts on games most people probably own aside from the random eshop title or two. Honestly the old rewards system was much better as you got a bunch of physical things you could spend your points on instead of digital versions of games that you'll have to rebuy if you ever get a different version of the 3ds because of their ass-backwards account system. Granted you can move your Nintendo ID but it's a huge pain in the ass.

Re: Review: Lost Reavers (Wii U eShop)

JpGamerGuy90

It's telling that this is the quality of the games Nintendo hypes up given the Wii U eshop is laughably behind the others in terms of can't-miss exclusive indies. (In addition to getting good indie games years after they've been played to death). Really just another example of how much more in tune with the market Nintendo needs to be so they can get the high-quality indie stuff.

Re: Rumour: Sources Go to Battle Again Over Nintendo NX Power

JpGamerGuy90

Really don't understand Nintendo not actively competing in the gamerspace. As a secondary console they don't do well, sorry. They need third party support this gen or it'll sell worse than the Wii U. Honestly I'm of mind Nintendo has completely lost it and they don't want to show the NX off because they already know how much worse itll look spec wise compared to the ps4k. I hope I'm wrong but Nintendo has been a disappointment for a while.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Its E3 Plans for The Legend of Zelda

JpGamerGuy90

I don't see why people think E3 isn't relevant anymore for Nintendo. E3 is one the biggest gaming expos and is a chance for Nintendo to showcase their games for people who might not be hardcore fans. The directs only reach a Nintendo fans and if Nintendo wants to avoid another failed home console they would be wise to start seriously considering how they reach potential customers. Pulling dumb crap like this isn't exactly helping their cause.

The way I see it, Zelda better be the second coming of Ocarina of Time on steroids if they seriously think it's worth being pretty much the only game available on the show floor.

Also hoping the NX ends up being a relatively powerful console with online with voice chat and other modern features and also focusing on games, not necessarily gimmicks. The NX announcement being pushed isn't exactly confidence inducing. I get that games aren't quite ready yet but they needed to show something to get people on board.

Re: Talking Point: The 3DS Faces the Challenge of Taking Nintendo Through 2016

JpGamerGuy90

Idk, maybe I just have weird tastes but I found the 3ds to really lack a lot of amazing first party stuff after 2013 when we got Kid Icarus and Luigi's Mansion. Seems the 3ds really just ended up getting a lot of Japanese titles which aren't exactly my cup of tea, I felt the original DS did a much better job balancing 1st and 3rd party releases. Hell, most of this year is just ports of older jprgs and jrpgs in general. As someone who isn't a fan of the old-school jrpg I haven't purchased a single 3ds game this year.

Though unpopular I'm hoping the NX is Nintendo's next home console and their main system and honestly I don't care if Nintendo releases another handheld. I'd rather see a steady stream of games and since I don't really game on the go, my 3ds I play at home most of the time, I don't need a successor to the 3ds. If they want to capture the mobile market it'd be cool if they have companion games or something.

Re: Poll: Are You Confident About Nintendo's 3DS Focus for 2016?

JpGamerGuy90

Little underwhelming line up for the 3ds given the lack of first party releases that aren't rpgs. Plus, lots of ports this year. 3ds hit it's apex in 2013 for me and it's been slowly been a less viable gaming system as the years progressed. It still has some solid titles but the last couple years have been underwhelming.

Re: Nintendo 3DS Games Sure Look Pretty In High Definition

JpGamerGuy90

Honestly I feel like Nintendo could benefit from a push from the freeware community as they've seemingly been slacking on the VC front. It's hard to justify a $9.99 glorified Rom when the actual Rom can be gotten for free. 4-5 bucks tops on VC titles honestly.

VC aside, time and time again we have to use the phrase "for a wii/wii u/3ds game" when we say a game looks good. I'm hoping one day Nintendo makes a system that can just have good looking games regardless of what the other systems offer. It is possible to be affordable and relatively powerful so long as you don't try to shoehorn more gimmicks.

Re: Reaction: The NX Release in March 2017 and How It Changes the Game

JpGamerGuy90

I don't see how Nintendo fans can continue to be optimistic at this point. Every time Nintendo is set to announce things they go full-on damage control, this isn't a sign of a healthy console lifespan if this crap happens all the time. In addition, the announcements tend to be somehow worse than originally expected, even by jaded pessimists. It's almost comical how Nintendo has been doing just about everything wrong since the Wii U started production. They've bungled up the 3ds more times than I care to count but at least the 3ds, up until this year, had decent wealth of game releases.

Honestly I'd like the NX to be a whole new branding for Nintendo, they need to get the hell away from the Wii line pronto. Like "Experience the NX generation of gaming," or something. Basically, have the specs to entice third parties but keep that Nintendo magic and for the love of it all do NOT tack something on that cannot be duplicated with a button press. The touchscreen gamepad has been a failure more often than not and a traditional controller, while not sexy from a tech perspective, ****ing works just fine.

Re: Feature: Key Details to Look Out for in Nintendo's Vital Financial Reports and Briefings

JpGamerGuy90

Look the Wii U is dead, not in a literal sense as it is getting some new releases but as far as their main concern the likelihood of them getting another huge release (I don't consider Sticker Star 2.0 a huge release) that we don't know about is slim to none. The NX is pretty much guaranteed to come out this year as Nintendo cannot let their fanbase have basically 3 to 4 games to choose from per year like in 2015 and most of 2016 for the Wii U or just survive on ports on the 3ds. They gotta have something big. Should they launch a major product rebrand and have TONS of new Wii U stuff I could see the NX releasing in 2017 but as it stands now Nintendo has no chance of avoiding the Wii U situation all over again unless they release the NX this year.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Needs to Excite A Mainstream Audience in 2016

JpGamerGuy90

@Vandy I see you defending Star Fox as if it's the poster child for a game that was never given a chance. It was, and it's not a good product regardless how you slice it. The motion controls require recalibration practically all the time and the two screen system doesn't work as they made the gamepad view too limiting and it's a hassle to constantly switch between two screens. In addition, the game has very little replay value and at just over 2 hours it's hard to justify charging 60 bucks when the only bonuses you get for beating the game are minor level variations or singlular battles that are, quite frankly, uninteresting.

You also state the Wii U was doomed from the start by the court of public opinion when in reality it never had a chance as they gimped on the hardware, again, and focused on a core gimmick that they never bothered with outside a few titles. Name one game that NEEDS the gamepad, you can't think of one because there isn't one. Having a map is handy but hardly worth charging potential console owners 50 additional bucks to buy a system that's essentially a ps3.

And this is saying nothing of their dreadful release schedule full of "safe" titles that never bothered pushing the envelope. The lackluster online that treats chatting with friends as some foreign concept and an eshop that struggles to get any noteworthy titles that aren't years old. The Wii U failed not because the public marked it as such from the get go, but because it was a bad system.

As such, why is making a system similar to the competition a bad thing? People like getting a lot of games to choose from and a console too different from anyone else doesn't get much outside of exclusives. Exclusives don't matter as much as they used to and honestly Nintendo could really benefit from giving it the old college try. Sure, they lost a lot of the core audience but they lost a lot of Nintendo fans with the Wii U as well and a shot to gather at least a percentage of both is far better than further fragmenting an already jaded fanbase.

Re: Poll: NX and Mobile Make This a Defining Year for Nintendo - Are You Optimistic?

JpGamerGuy90

Wii U was easily Nintendo's worst console overall. It had some fun games for sure, playing Xenoblade Chronicles X atm and it's awesome, but the 3-4 month long wait for every release got old really fast. The Wii U never had a year like the Wii where you could point to one high-profile release per month, I think Nintendo should start over with something new and as soon as possible. Consumer apathy for the big N is at an all time high and I'd wager they aren't foolish enough to delay releasing their last chance to be a major player in the video game industry instead of a has-been that caters to just a small niche. That's not the Nintendo I grew up with and that's not the Nintendo that revolutionized the industry.

Re: Poll: NX and Mobile Make This a Defining Year for Nintendo - Are You Optimistic?

JpGamerGuy90

I remember the year after the Wii U was announced people were saying there was no way Nintendo would mess it up and they did, big time. Hopefully the NX releases this year given the total lack of major releases on Wii U and the 3ds (first party wise anyway). I'm expecting some kind of hybrid as they really would benefit having just one platform to develop for.

Then again, Nintendo hasn't exactly knocked it out of the park in over a decade when it comes to home console design so I'll wait and see.

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

JpGamerGuy90

It's a little disheartening the quality of games the Wii U is seeing in its last year of life. Mario Tennis, Amiibo Festival, and now Star Fox. If it wasn't for a port of Pokken (not my cup of tea, but I've heard it's solid) and TP remaster the Wii U's last good game would be Splatoon which released almost an entire year ago. Mario Maker I don't necessarily count as it's inherently designed as a community-driven game and the true barometer of Nitendo's ability of game design is with a game they designed to survive based on what they themselves created. Rather verbose, but basically I'm just saying the last game they made that they didn't depend on player additions to be good is nearly a year old now.

If the NX fails to come out this year, or the launch line up is a bunch of ports with no real "must-have," I'll have completely lost any hope of Nintendo knowing what they're doing. The 3ds has seen game quality and quantity slip since 2014 and the Wii U never has had a great year in all honesty. NX needs to deliver in spades.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Games of 2016 - Spring Edition

JpGamerGuy90

Psn/Xbox live get at least one solid indie a week, Nintendo is lucky if they get one a month. I hope they increase their efforts for the NX as their output game wise has been hindered by the complete lack of games on the Wii U. It's easier to wait two years for an epic 3d Mario if we have the newest call of duty (say what you want, those games sell), sports titles, and other high profile multiplats
