Re: Chex Quest HD Exists, And It's Getting A Switch Port This March

John_Koshiro

I have played both recently. I would have to say that the original beats the remake, mainly because the gameplay and physics is DOOM at its core.

Although, I heard that the HD version was originally a fan project, which is impressive with that in mind.

Both games are pretty short. They can be beaten in about 2-3 hours. I hope extra content is being planned to justify this $5 pricing.

Re: Pac-Man Museum+ Will Bring The Retro Vibes To Switch In May

John_Koshiro

I think this is shaping up to be one of the best Pac-Man compilations Namco has put out.

Compare this to Namco Museum on Switch, which was essentially a menu screen that only had a handful of games. The level of customization and activities here put that to shame.

It sucks that there Ms. Pac-Man isn't included, but, given the legal circumstances surrounding her, it's somewhat understandable. Maybe she'll be offered as DLC in the future.

Re: Kirby And The Forgotten Land Will Have amiibo Support, According To Nintendo Of Japan

John_Koshiro

It's nice that this includes amiibo support but I kinda wish they would give them functionality that's more meaningful than just giving players in-game items.

Smash Ultimate gave you the ability to train a CPU fighter from your figure and using the Wolf Link amiibo in BOTW lets players summon him to tag along on your journey. Both of these examples are also optional and don't lock away significant content or features from the players while allowing data to be carried over to/from other games.

There is a suitable middle ground between games like Kirby offering superficial support by providing in-game items and a game like Skyward Sword HD where a quality-of-life mechanic is tied directly to the Loftwing amiibo. I bet designing balanced and personalized gameplay for figures isn't generally the easiest route for amiibo support but it's really neat when Nintendo game have them.

Re: Wii Sports Is Reborn As 'Nintendo Switch Sports'

John_Koshiro

R.I.P. Matt. Like many of the people here, I also think that these new avatars are totally uninteresting. If they wanted to bring back the Sports series, why relegate one of its most iconic aspects to being secondary characters in game full of generic stand-ins?

Re: Hands On: Streets Of Rage 4's Mr. X Nightmare DLC Is A Dreamy Add-On

John_Koshiro

@Knuckles I heard about the retro fighters but I assumed they only included ones for the characters who returned.

As indicated by my lack of knowledge, Streets Of Rage 4 is in my backlog right now. I went out of my way to get a LRG bundle so I'm definitely going have to play it soon.

That's great to hear that Skate is at least in the game. However, even with the admittedly reasonable logic that Skate was excluded because of the time gap and the effect it would have on his playstyle, I would still love to see him back in action.

Re: Soapbox: Space Jam 2 Is A Video Game Cash-In That Doesn't Quite Get It Right

John_Koshiro

I have come to accept that the first Space Jam will be looked upon fondly by those who have grew up with it. I actually grew up watching it numerous times so I have some understanding of what it was like and what it meant to people.

With that said, nowadays, I really can't see it as anything other than a thoughtless misuse of Looney Tunes characters. They're pretty much there just to be plastered on to lunchboxes and T-shirts.

I mean, the character of Lola was created solely because the production team of the first one didn't think Bugs Bunny's classic love interest, Honey, was marketable enough.

When Looney Tunes animator Chuck Jones was criticizing this film while attending a party at Warner Bros. celebrating his tenure there, he was escorted out. It kinda just goes to show the blatant disregard Warner Bros. has for their own talent when they kick him out of his own party.

They couldn't even bother animate the characters in a fairly traditional manner. Instead, it's just typical low effort CGI for the sake of convenience and appearing modern.

One of the most common defenses I hear is that these movies are for kids and they're just meant to be guilty pleasure fun. So I guess we have gotten to the point where the quality of entertainment can be excused depending on its target audience. It just patronizing and cynical to make bad products just because children will consume them.

So, unsurprisingly, this sequel lived up to the mindset of its predecessor and then some. Probably even worse since it's a soulless cash-in of a beloved film, which itself, was also a soulless cash-in of Looney Tunes and Jordan's celebrity status.

Space Jam 2 is basically a creatively inbred feature-length ad trying to capitalize on the metaverse nature of entertainment today.

Re: Random: Did You Know EarthBound Creator Shigesato Itoi Had A Starring Role In My Neighbor Totoro?

John_Koshiro

If I remember correctly, Itoi has also been searching for some long lost treasure that apparently belonged to his ancestors. He is absolutely insistent that it is exists despite never finding anything.

His treasure quest is sometimes joked about in Japanese media. For example, in the anime Samurai Champloo, there's an episode featuring a crazy treasure hunter obsessed with finding his ancestors' fortune who fanatically never wavers in his belief that the fortune is buried underneath a mountain.

Re: Takashi Iizuka Suggests Sonic's 2022 Outing Will Be An "Advancement" Of Modern Sonic Games

John_Koshiro

@Noid I would love to see SEGA do something in the vein of Sonic Utopia.

It's understandable why the original Adventure games on Dreamcast avoided it but, given all the years that have passed in addition to advancements in hardware, it really seems like the logical thing to do.

It would add much more depth to gameplay while making it more appealing to the old school, 2D crowd.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Nintendo Direct At E3 2021?

John_Koshiro

This was the best E3 Nintendo Direct in the past 5 years, however, I thought the ones before were kinda mediocre.

I would give this one a 6/10 (I voted for C but I would prefer to say "decent" rather than "average"). We got a lot of neat reveals but nothing grand like a new Mario Kart, Star Fox, or Donkey Kong Country.

Although, part of the reason I probably feel this way is because my taste in games is rather unique. If they announced a new Chibi-Robo or Steel Diver, I would have given this a 7 or maybe even an 8. I'm a sucker for these little franchises.

I would say that Metroid Dread was the highlight here. We already seen a bit of BOTW 2 so the impact isn't as strong this time, although, the stuff that they did show was still pretty cool. Finally, I'm also glad we're getting another one of these Game & Watches. Fingers crossed that Nintendo will make another one.

Re: Here's Another Look At 3D Realms' Spiritual Successor To Hexen 2, Arriving On Switch In 2021

John_Koshiro

@shgamer @doctorhino Sorry guys, but re-releases of the Heretic and Hexen games are unlikely.

id Software and Raven Software had held co-ownership of the franchise. Since Activision bought out Raven Software in the late 1990s with Bethesda's parent company buying out id Software in the late 2000s, it means, through some legal nonsense, that one of them has to forfeit their stake in ownership in order for a game to be developed and/or published.
