Recently, we’ve spent the last who knows how long, re-playing Pokémon Blue, Red, and Yellow on the 3DS Virtual Console, and bingeing the original Pokémon animated series on Netflix alongside this, and what a time I’ve been having! Netflix is rumoured to be planning on making a live action Pokémon series, too, and this won’t be the first time Netflix have adapted a gaming franchise, with both Castlevania and The Witcher proving wildly successful as animated and live action series respectively, not to mention the recent CG Resident Evil series.
Playing those classic Pokémon games, and watching a series based on them had us at Nintendo Life thinking, what other Nintendo franchises would we love to see turned into a series? Below we’ve listed nine franchises that we think would make great shows. Some are popular mainstays in the Nintendo universe, others are forgotten gems that could do with a comeback.
Oh, and then there is Chibi-Robo…
Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)
Okay, we’re going to apologise now because we’re only going to be talking about Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Awakening helped ‘save’ the series and increase its fanbase, but Three Houses helped showcase the potential of the franchise on a home console for people who missed out on the GameCube and Wii entries. The handful of fully animated cut scenes in the game are so, so beautiful, how can you not want a Fire Emblem series? There are multiple story routes, too, which leaves endless possibilities for an animated narrative to follow.
Aside from the main story, we would like to potentially see ‘specials’ which focus on each house and the students within, exploring their backgrounds and relationships — similar to the support conversations, but more fleshed out. We’d pay good money to know everything and anything about our girl Hilda, and we imagine any Three Houses fan would feel the same about their best guy or gal. Another option could be to fully animate the paralogues and the story of the characters involved in them. We would love to know more about Seteth and Flayn, and their life before they came to the monastery.
The real question is this: Which form of Byleth would it feature?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch)
We know, we know, the licensing alone would make the virtually impossible, but we can dream, can’t we!? From the opening of World of Light to all the character reveals we have seen over the last few years, the possibilities of a Super Smash Bros. video game crossover series are endless.
Yes, the licensing would make it impossible for several characters to feature, but even with just the Nintendo-owned roster, it would be insane to wrangle them all. We reckon a fully animated Master Hand and Crazy Hand would make for some excellent physical comedy sections, though, and there would be many, many interactions that would just be super fun to watch play out.
Our boy Kirby can just be there sucking everyone up whenever he (he? Apparently so) wants to, as well. See? Endless comedy potential.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch)
We have children who are obsessed with Mickey and the Roadster Racers. When we first sat and watched this with them, we thought how can they make a narrative around racing with characters that aren’t known for racing? Turns out it isn’t too hard at all!
This series could be focused on a 'World Tour' — more like the mobile game — where Bowser or any chosen villain is trying to prevent Mario and friends from winning, or even finishing the races in the Grand Prix. We don’t know anyone who hasn’t played Mario Kart, so we think a series would be fun especially for a younger audience, introducing them to some characters who aren’t usually the focus in most Nintendo games.
Chibi-Robo (GCN)
If you didn’t think you’d be reading about us advocating for more Chibi-Robo, you're obviously not paying attention to how much we love the little guy.
The GameCube Chibi-Robo game takes place in a home where the eponymous little robot dude has been purchased as a birthday gift for a quiet eight-year-old girl called Jenny. We could see this as an opportunity to give Chibi-Robo the heart we already know this ‘Tin-Man’ has; to bond with Jenny in a Wall-E-esque fashion and help her in more than just a work capacity that he was purchased for.
It would be adorable, and we definitely wouldn't cry like we have watching Luca every day for the past month. Kids, eh? They'll get ya right in the feels. Well, kids and Pixar. And Chibi-Robo.
Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS)
Hey Nintendo, why is there not a new Kid Icarus game on the Switch? Or at least a port of the 3DS game. Kid Icarus: Uprising, for those who played, it was a beautiful game which really showed off the potential of the 3DS. It also introduced many people to Pit, Palutena, Medusa, and many more.
A fantasy world based around Greek Mythology leaves such an open world of possibility to turn into an incredibly dramatic series. A series could be just what Pit needs to stand out as more than just a Smash character to wider audience. And you can't have a series without a tie-in game, can you? Right? Right?
WarioWare: Get It Together! (Switch)
Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to watch anti-hero, Wario, have his own series, causing trouble and mischief!?
A lot of Wario’s games have been focused on him hunting for treasure and loot, with the goal for him to waft his way to becoming the richest man in the kingdom (or at least richer than Mario). And of course, we need to have Captain Syrup as the antagonist of the story, who appears to be one step ahead of Wario and his schemes. WarioWare: Get It Together! looks to showcase the colourful cast of characters that have featured in his micro-games like never before, and we'd jump at the chance to see 9-Volt on TV, too.
Ring Fit Adventure (Switch)
Over the past eighteen months, and during lockdown, we alternated between one of two characters: we either got into the best shape of our lives, or we spent all our time bingeing everything and anything our eyes could consume. We were mostly the latter, and really could have done with sinking all those hours into Ring Fit Adventure instead of trying to breed a perfect IV, shiny Obstagoon.
Just as most people thought when they played RFA, this is much more than just a fitness game. We could see this becoming an adventure/educational series in which alongside a narrative where there are maybe obstacles to complete to defeat an enemy or overcome an issue, the Ring Fit Trainer could explain which muscles are used, why they’re important and how these actions can be used to get fit.
We would imagine it being quite similar to the Japanese anime How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? but instead of weight training, it would be fitness.
Excitebike 64 (N64)
Excitebike is a long forgotten Nintendo franchise that hasn’t seen much love in recent years. We could see a competitive, glory driven narrative where returning characters from Excitebike 64, such as “Jumpin Jim” Rivers, or “Tricky Ricky” Stern, battle it out to be the Excitebike world champion.
The platforms that this franchise appeared on were visually limited compared to today’s potential, so an animated series could really show off how exciting a bike can be!
Punch-Out!! (Wii)
Have you ever watched Rocky? How about the anime Hajime No Ippo? If your answer is 'yes' to either of these, then you know how gripping and beautiful a boxing narrative can be. This is one of the few on this list that we wouldn’t mind having as a live action series or an animated one. Of course, some rivals from the original game series wouldn’t make the cut in a modern series, but this is opportunity to maybe introduce some new characters to kick start a new upcoming game.
If we’re dreaming, then why not throw in an Arms crossover? Wonder how Little Mac would fare against Spring Man or Min-Min?
These are just a handful of franchises that would make great shows for us all to binge and fall in love with, but there are many more that are not listed on here. What franchises would you like to see turned into a series? Let us know in the comments.

Captain N reboot and NOTHING ELSE.
I would watch Mario kart tv for sure. And something LoZ based (miniseries would work quite well).
@Daniel36 HELL YES! I was thinking the same thing when I saw Kid Icarus up there
None of them do, because the Hollywood degenerates would ruin anything they touch.
As cool as that what be, I agree with @Euler that they would just [woo] it up.
Wow… you left out the most obvious choices?
All of these are anime / Tv series material
Fire Emblem did have an anime, or at least a couple videos. I do have a VHS tape of a licensed dub, from before there was even official localization. Marth was "Mars".
I'm guessing it didn't get rereleased on DVD due to Nintendo suddenly valuing the IP much more.
An anime based on the Zelda manga would be nice. As others noted, nothing from Hollywood, thanks.
All of these shows would be ruined by fart jokes
Please no. Don't cross the art forms. They are different categories for a reason.
Let Sony waste their money on this.
In today's world, the last thing that Nintendo needs to do is expose these franchises to a tv audience. There would be so much hate levied if they don't tick all of the "correct" boxes, that it is not worth the headache. Nintendo needs to improve the Switch system and work on getting games released, not worrying about public outcry concerning possible issues with a tv show.
@Daniel36 **** no. The last thing any industry needs is more crossovers to shill a product. I'd rather a self-contained Mario/Zelda/FlingSmash/whatever show than a horrific amalgimation of different worlds and tones that counteracts the very nature of cinema. It works for a plotless crossover game, it works for quirky fanfiction, it could even work for a plot-free show like a parodic sitcom - it does not work when telling a story. Look at how Subspace Emissary turned out, with characters acting either nothing like they do in their games (Wario), acting so accurate to their games they felt out of place due to how much more development they got (Lucas), or being portrayed in a way with nothing to do with their source material (ROB), all the while traversing the most bland locations ever put to code.
Arlo just had a video talking about how they should leverage Luigi’s Mansion more.
@IPrino
The thing is, Nintendo already has many Tv shows in its history of its IPs and they are mostly well received.
-DK
-Mario (the cartoon / Tv show)
-Zelda
-Kirby
-Pokemon
-F-Zero
-Star fox (if you count that animation of Zero)
-Kid Icarus (special episodes)
-Bayonetta (the movie, I know its Sega’s, but let’s put it in if we could say Bayonetta is some kind of Nintendo’s IP now too)
-Animal Crossing (the movie)
-Pikmin (remember those 3DS shorts? They were even shown at Film festivals if I remember correctly)
I mean, Nintendo is no stranger to lending their IPs and making anime/cartoon material, and they are usually good.
@fafonio as long as they aren't produced by Netflix...
@Noid Go wash your mouth.
Metroid DESERVES a TV series or movie.
Samurai Jack is the perfect template for a Metroid movie or limited series since its whole philosophy for storytelling is basically centered around "show, don't tell". Jack barely speaks and so much as constructs sentences like every 3 episodes so the rest of the storytelling is purely visual and atmospheric, which is literally the perfect way to go about a story about a lone bounty hunter travelling to different planets on assignment who almost never talks or even shows her face like Samus. The dialogue could be given through side characters like the other bounty hunters in Prime 3 or Adam Malkovich, but other than that it would be a show purely reliant on atmosphere and communicating its themes and narrative with very few words as possible
This article is based on the premise that those making the shows would have any clue as to how to make them worth watching. History has shown us that simply wouldn't happen.
Games are better than TV, anyway. They don't need shows.
@fafonio That is fair.
To each their own, but for me personally I want to see great videogames result in more great videogames, whether it's sequels or entirely new IPs that utilize a successful formula.
Take huge RPG quests that take dozens or even hundreds of hours to finish; how likely is it that such stories will be satisfactorily condensed into a two-hour movie? Is a TV show version of a game you play where you are directly interacting with the characters and influencing dialogues and outcomes really the same? By default, so much is lost in translation here.
Remember those quotes (especially from Barry) in the original PSX Resident Evil that were so awful and cheesy they quickly became legendary ("master of unlocking")? Or "All your base are belong to us"? They might make a lot of gamers cringe today, but back then they were a part of what made the hobby "ours" before it went mainstream and online functionality began to show a less pleasant side of corporate priorities. In a way it was a more innocent time; videogames had their own worlds, characters, even lexicons that simply didn't translate into other media (example: the Super Mario Bros. movie).
At least for me, videogames are their own entity distinct from film and television, and they mix like oil and water. I know my lone post won't stop videogame-based film and TV projects from being made, and if they end up being successful and other folks like them I'm absolutely cool with it. I just don't have any personal interest.
As a lifelong Fire Emblem fan I can assure you that we don't need a TV series.
What does need a TV series/adaptation though is something along the lines of Metroid Origins / The legend of Zelda Origins (the story before Skyloft, there is a manga about a war and a soldier which got chosen by the Goddess, obv. Link, and we also saw the Origin of Majora in that manga)
I'd love to see a Punch-Out series, I agree, Kid Icarus also deserves some love along the lines.
Shin Megami Tensei, anyone?
Other than for Fire Emblem, these games would make awful TV shows.
Hollywood is big on video games right now because video games have never been more popular. Fortnite is arguably the biggest thing going on in pop culture at the moment. It's similar to what TRL was in the late 90s/early 2000s.
I'm not a fan of all the commercialism going on. Nintendo seems more concerned anymore with tie-ins to everything. I'd rather they take a step back and refocus on making great games and ensuring more great games come to the Switch. I love the Switch and it's my favorite console of all time, but I still believe it could be even better.
These franchises are game franchises for a reason. They were designed to be experienced, not merely passively observed, and very few have made a smooth transition one way or another.
And while we have seen some franchises that have crossed over into anime, for example, there is nothing that the animated series/films have done that the games haven't done better. The Bayonetta film was merely okay while the games were excellent. Why waste 90 minutes on mediocrity when you could be playing either of the almost universally acclaimed games instead?
The Layton movie was good too, but again, they shoehorned silly brainteasers that would have worked better in the context of a game.
@Euler @IPrino have echoed my sentiments.
There is virtually nothing worth a damn left in mainstream entertainment these days, and games are veering down that rabbit hole fast. I fear that there will soon come a time where I will be abandoning beloved franchises, or even swearing off modern gaming entirely because I cannot support the underlying political/ideological intentions that drive many such works.
This is a poor excuse to insert a bunch of affiliate links, interesting.
at this point kid icarus is the answer to everything. the characters and writing were such a great part of the game, they even got their own short animated episodes when the game was still fresh. its a prime candidate as an animated series
Advance Wars. Imagine an episode where Sonja teaches Andy what an airport is. Kanbie looking for his missing sock. Lash making inventions that go wrong.
Splatoon in the Pokemon/Yugioh style could be intresting.
Not convinced any of those games could be properly translated to a TV show outside of maybe Fire Emblem.
We have enough confidence in video game movies these days? I mean, they spent decades cursed. Let games be games and films be films. Focusing too much on IP gets rather crass eventually. There is only Mario that is THAT iconic.
I feel like a Mario Kart KARToon would be pretty cool! Other than the games already mentioned, a Hyrule Warriors series would be awesome! Link, Zelda and the Hyrulean soldiers (as well as some returning Zelda characters) exploring Hyrule and fighting monsters would be cool.
Fire Emblem would need to do a lot to diversify itself from a standard fantasy anime.
@Clarice Absolutely, couldn't agree more.
Remember how Star Wars went from beloved to too saturated?
Be careful what you wish for.
I would like to see a pikmin tv series but based on nature documentaries. I would love that.
This is an abstract article, isn't it? Yeah hard pass on all of these, I feel that novelty would wear fast on anyone that isn't a child. The only reason anyone likes the old Captain N, Zelda, or Mario cartoons is the quotable/meme moments.
Fire Emblem could make a great live action series. I'd love to see Awakening done and I think that could be a lower budget series too.
Mario Kart is a good one, I'd not thought if the Mickey Mouse Roadsters comparison.
Chibi Robo I'd want stop motion like the Rillakuma series on Netflix.
I'm surprised F-Zero isn't here.
@Aliteralturnip I never knew that I wanted this, but now I do. Thank you, I think 🤔. This may actually be a curse. Oh well
@Lukandon ...That's because it already had one.
Oh wow! Didn't expect the comments to be so jaded to the idea. I personally would love to see some game franchises get a tv show, anime, movie, etc. Not everyone wants to play the games as a franchise but might enjoy the characters.
Pokemon is a special situation where people want the mainline games to be more like the show.
I haven't played Three Houses but my candidate for Fire Emblem would be Path of Radiance. I thoroughly enjoyed the cut scenes in the game but couldn't be bothered to s-rank all the support conversations. Plus if the director plays the cards right with the permadeath they can create the feeling of Game of thrones where no character is safe.
I don't think Punchout would get any kind of adaptation. I could see it being like Baki without the gore but they would have to tread carefully as not to stereotype or be racist.
I'm all in on Zelda. Maybe Samurai Jack style or studio ghibli.
Kid Icarus is an honorary mention because of all the anime shorts Nintendo created to support Uprising. I would love a continuation.
Smash bros idk... it could take on a captain N like take or do something similar to DBZ where the characters compete in a tournament. The only problem with that is the developers of each respective franchise would want their character to win.
An anime for FE The Sacred Stones would be a dream come true. Whether it adapts the game's story or provides small arcs for popular characters I think it would work to perfection.
I could think of Nothing worse?
@Broosh That last part I agree with. I'd say the same about Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
When it comes to wanting Nintendo tv shows, all I ask is for someone to pull a One Piece in Latin America (we had a dub of the horrible 4Kids version, but Funimation recently ordered a redub of the first 140 episodes, based on the Japanese version) and redo Kirby: Right Back at Ya! (and maybe Sonic X if we're lucky) so the 4Kids version becomes obsolete. While we're at it, have someone finish F-Zero GP Legends dub.

I'm a bit biased when I say this, but I think a Wario Land series would be a better idea than Warioware.
The adventure aspect of those games has more potential in a television adaptation, in my opinion.
Plus, I'm sick of Warioware being the only solo representation of the character in recent times.
I know this is a silly article written with silly intent, but honestly I generally dismay when people say any piece of art 'needs' to be translated into a different medium. I find more often than not, the medium that produced the piece is integral to why and how it came to be and changing that medium misunderstands what made the source so successful in the first place.
Thats not to say you don't get interesting work by exploring a text with a different medium but by no means does it 'need' to be done.
@bobzbulder
It’s a curse because no matter how much we want it we’ll never get it 😅
@IPrino well put

@TheFrenchiestFry Samurai Jack is such a beautiful masterpiece imo, a Metroid show with that kind of feel would be amazing
Zelda, Metroid, Starfox, and F-ZERO would all make great anime as well.
Personally, I'd love a Super Smash Bros. / Nintendoland-esque Nintendo Animated Universe (NAU) of anime; do what Marvel did but as a series of anime film (or OVAs or half season anime) crossovers.
Start with DONKEY KONG featuring Mario having to save Paulene from Cranky in his youth, and end the movie/series with the Mario Bros. doing various jobs for people like Wario as construction and wrecking crews, plumbers, and soda Bottlers, before ending up in the Mushroom Kingdom, setting off SUPER MARIO BROS. Then jump over and do a Zelda anime and a Starfox anime and a Metroid anime. Have Samus encounter Captain Falcon on a bounty hunter mission and then have Fox McCloud have to take up his dad's role in the F-ZERO races against Cpt Falcon. Then jump over to Onett and do an Earthbound anime, and promote a re-release of all three MOTHER/Earthbound games while you're at it by getting people invested in the show. Then you can just pull Pikachu (and Jigglypuff) and Kirby from their classic animes. And finally announce a Super Smash Bros. crossover series.
Hot take: None of them need a TV series. 99% chance they would be ridiculous.
The fact that Xenoblade isn't on this list is baffling.
I have always been of the belief that a Fire Emblem series with a Game of Thrones vibe would be excellent. You could go all in with heartbreaking character deaths since it's built into the series. I had imagined an adaptation of Awakening, but ever since playing Three Houses I want that so bad. If done right, the Battle of the Eagle and Lion after the time skip would be heartbreaking.
I could definitely see Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Smash Brothers, and Kid Icarus as anime material. I'd also throw In Splatoon, Advanced Wars and Famicom Detective Club.
Fire Emblem getting that game of thrones feel.
Smash getting that Justice League/Avengers Animated Series feel.
Animal Crossing for that Whinnie the Pooh feel.
Punch Out for that Rocky or Hajime Ippo feel as either a movie or series.
If Pokemon, Kirby, F Zero, Sonic, Megaman, Pacman, Mario, Persona and Donkey Kong could get successful shows exploring new avenues. There is no reason the above can't.
@marandahir @Lukandon
F Zero already has an anime back in 2003.
Anime is okay, but live-action is a hard "hell no!". Please don't make another Super Mario Bros.
What a terrible list!
Okay, I imagine WarioWare more like The Office with ridiculous board room meetings and in the style of the reveal trailer for the latest game.
How can this list not include Luigi's Mansion after how beautiful the cutscenes of 3 are?
Star Fox! F-Zero is another obvious miss. The game on GameCube expanded the universe quite a bit.
Then there are the most obvious of the obvious like Zelda and Mario. Done well, must say.
Wow, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the only decent one on this list.
Technically, "Fire Emblem" was already adapted as a two-episode anime OVA. The English Dub starred Spike Spencer (the voice of Shinji Ikari from "Neon Genesis Evangelion") as the voice of Marth, or Mars, as he was called in the anime. And as a side note, Lena was voiced by Tiffany Grant, who played Asuka Langley Soryu in "Evangelion" as well.
But Nintendo has other televised adaptations under their belt. In the anime department, they have "Kirby: Right Back at Ya!" and "F-Zero: GP Legend." In terms of Western cartoons, they have "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" (which included the only "Legend of Zelda" TV series), and it's sequels based on "Super Mario Bros. 3" and "Super Mario World;" a musical abomination based on "Donkey Kong Country;" and the classic "Captain N: The Game Master."
I'd say the next franchises to get the televised treatment are "Metroid" and "Star Fox." I actually have an idea for a script for a "Star Fox" episode that I would love to pitch to Nintendo, but given that they don't accept ideas from the fans (their words, not mine), it's highly unlikely I'll ever be able to set up a meeting with them to pitch my idea.
I think I'd want to see a Zelda: OoT series that takes place right after Link gets trapped in the Temple of Time. Zelda is spending the seven years training as Shiek, fighting Ganondorf in an underground resistance, and preparing for the arrival of Adult Link.
@chiefeagle02 I've always wanted that as a game. A canonical spin off to OoT starring and playing as Zelda and Impa. Them hiding from Ganon, 7 years of training, going around the community and defending all of Hyrule from destruction while they wait for Link to wake up. But if they ever did decide to green light that and they decide it would work better as a show. Than that's fine by me.
Ring Fit Adventure is a no go, don't even pitch it.
A three houses anime sounds AMAZING! I want to see like the entire back story of Ashe from his days as a thief, to Lanato teaching him to read that book they talked about in the Ingrid support, and finally having to kill his adoptive father. That sounds like it would make an great episode for a tv show. And than have one of these for everyone, like Claude's days in Almyra, and Dimitri with the tragedy of duscar. A 3 HOUSES SHOW WILL BE SO COOL
