Streets of Rage 4 was a big hit in 2020, tempting in newcomers with its stylish visuals and weighty combat, and delighting series veterans of a certain age that had been waiting many years for an official sequel. It's a game with plenty of replayability, too, with a good number of unlockable characters and a generally moreish campaign. We called it a "a perfect modernisation of a beloved franchise" in our review.
Of course, more of a good thing is always welcome, so the Mr. X Nightmare DLC has been an exciting and long awaited addition. At $7.99 / £7.19, it's also a relatively low-priced bit of DLC, which is a fair way to set expectations.
Let's quickly clarify what this extra content doesn't do, and what you also get in the accompanying free game update. The DLC does not add story content in a meaningful way, though as we'll go on to explain what is included represents excellent value. Those that don't buy the DLC also got some new goodies recently: first up is 'Mania+' difficulty, which is insanely challenging. We couldn't even clear the first stage, but that said there'll be more skilful players that have invested hours mastering each character's most effective combos, so it's a fun extra.
The other big free addition — and this one is for everyone — is a rather good Training mode. Many of us will have stumbled across combos and strategies through persistence, but this mode takes you through the basics but also specific combos and moves for each character. It's a Street Fighter-esque approach as it shows you the inputs and clears the lesson once you've nailed it, and even those that have played through the game numerous times may learn something new. If you do buy the DLC, the new characters also get their own individual training modules to help players learn their capabilities.
So, onto the Mr. X Nightmare content. First of all, if you're yet to clear the main game you'll have three new characters available right away: Estel Aguirre, Shiva and Max Thunder. Each brings something a little different to the table, and the trend across all three is that they're up to the same standards in animation and moveset as the core cast, which is excellent to see. When you play through the story as these characters it's similar to when you use unlockable retro fighters - the story is unchanged. Cutscenes are the same, with the only wrinkle here being that these DLC add-ons are bosses in the campaign; when you fight 'yourself' the enemy takes on a multi-coloured hue to avoid confusion, so it's about as elegant a solution as was possible without fundamentally changing the story.
Estel Aguirre, a tough cop that you encounter first in the campaign, blends a bit of Axel's rugged up-close combat with some decent speed. Her jump attack has terrific range to get across the screen, with a 'Blitz Move' similar to Blaze. The Star Move is particularly fun, replicating the 'boss' equivalent but taking up a large part of the screen — for those with fond memories of the original Streets of Rage, it's an awesome throwback.
Next up is Shiva, who feels a little more unique in his approach. For example, his Blitz Move has more of a cool-down animation than most, but when used effectively is a perfect finale. His Offensive Special, similarly, performs a little differently depending on the enemy's location. Combo potential is very high, especially when you transition from ground to aerial attacks, so there's little doubt Shiva will become a favourite. And as a neat touch he does something different with weapons; eager fans can probably guess what this is.
Finally, we have Max Thunder, a retro favourite and one of the more challenging — arguably irritating — bosses in the campaign. As a muscle-bound wrestler he is, naturally, very slow. Yet he is extremely powerful, in standard and special attacks. Grapples are fun, of course, but we will say that his Blitz Move is arguably broken — in the player's favour, but still broken. If you successfully execute it (double tap left or right + 'Y'), you can spam it repeatedly with practically no cooldown, even making it possible to pin enemies against the side of the screen. It wouldn't surprise us if it gets a little 'balancing' tweak in a mini update down the road.
All three characters are a lot of fun to use, and considering how much we routinely pay for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters, they're arguably enough value on their own. However, the main new mode is 'Survival', which is meant to be the core offering in the DLC. It doesn't put much effort into the 'story' aspect of it beyond a screen of text, but the mode itself makes up for that small lack of flair.
Once you're in there, you can choose any unlocked character and work through increasingly difficult levels and waves of enemies. Each level is a single arena with varied foes and environmental factors, and when you clear a room you choose a neat perk — poison effect on moves, random 'companion' to help, increased walk speed and many more — and move on. Each level ramps up in difficulty, with boss encounters at regular intervals, until you go from comfortably trouncing everyone to just about surviving. There's new music, throwback enemy types and some fantastic environments thrown in that bring nostalgia for veterans or simply look cool to newcomers.
There are two options in this mode, too. Our favourite is Weekly Sim, a curated set of stages for you to try and beat. The first week's set stumped us quite a way in with a level that had pits of doom and swinging obstacles; the 'one death = game over' formula can feel cruel in stages like that. That's our only mild criticism of 'Random Sim', the other option, as some arenas and enemy combinations can feel a little cheap and unfair on rare occasions. Yes, we know, some will say 'git good', but a run can end abruptly with what feels like limited control.
Overall, though, Survival mode is great fun, and particularly well suited to the Switch version. A run might take 15-20 minutes, so it's an excellent bite-sized fight. For each run you gain experience for the character that eventually unlocks alternative special moves, which you can then use across all modes. Throw in unlockable gallery goodies and some quirky new weapons etc, and the incentive to regularly do a few runs in the mode is high.
And so, as a relatively affordable add-on to enhance Streets of Rage 4, Mr X. Nightmare delivers. The new content matches the quality of the main game, shaking up the experience with enjoyable new characters and a strong extra mode to dip into. For fans old and new, it's well worth a look.
This DLC was played on Nintendo Switch courtesy of a complimentary code from the publisher. At the time of publication the Mr X Nightmare DLC is not available to purchase on the Switch eShop due to a technical issue, this is expected to be fixed soon and we will update the article when it is resolved.

One of the best games around. Can't wait for the new content
Sometimes I hate being a switch player... Plagued with delays, technical issues and just flat out "we want to focus on how great a game can be."
Can this be downloaded in the US yet? I still didn't see it anywhere on the shop. Might be time for another replay!
Been checking NL and the eShop obsessively for over a week now, I just want to buy this.
@Zeldafan79 Not yet, there was an unspecified issue that mean it's not available to buy yet, as mentioned in the note at the bottom it worked for us via a code from the publisher (so we did play through it on Switch, no worries there).
Dotemu hopes to have it up today or over the weekend, according to their social media updates.
@ThomasBW84
Okay cool thanks! Looking forward to another round.
This DLC is glorious!! I've been playing it on playstation, and planning to double dip on Switch......("spoiler" removed).... Survival Mode is some of the best fun I've had in a while..... here's hoping Golden Axe is next, it could use this team to make it fun again (time isn't kind to GA).
@ThomasBW84 My god, dude. How is it that the DLC is available through code but not distributed for everybody else?
Also, what's the deal with the submission approval from Nintendo for fixing this issue, do they have to check for bugs or something?
I do believe I will purchase this.
Can't wait for this to become available!
Yum yum. Can’t wait. Looks great
@russell-marlow Codes go active when a 'page' is live on the eShop, so something may have gone wrong with the way the game's purchase link connects to the eShop. That's a guess.
@NintendoJunkie All my thoughts exactly. Man a revamped, properly done Golden Axe would be amaaaaazing!
So definitely no additional story to this DLC then? Except that screen of text? Tbf, might be worth it as the original games story was told through screens of text 😅
Im in the UK and have the American LRG physical copy for my UK Switch. Will the DLC on the UK switch eshop work if my physical game is from a different region?
@russell-marlow it’s disappointing, obviously nothing wrong with the code as reviewers and youtubers have all had review codes that play fine.
It’s just a glitch that won’t let people actually purchase it but why it’s taking so long to rectify is beyond me. Wonder if Sony slipped some money to DOTEMU to delay it for a week?!
@NintendoJunkie A Golden Axe sequel made with as much love Streets 4 would be a dream come true.
a dreamy not available content 😂
@NintendoJunkie - Cripes almighty, spoiler tags or edit it out! Ridiculous.
Loved Wonder Boy The Dragon's Trap and Streets of Rage 4. Golden Axe by them would be awesome, or if they wanted to do an RPG, Shining Force
@Darkthany considering how well top-down strategy games have been received of late, I'm surprised we've not had a Shining Something-or-other in a while
@HamatoYoshi You positive? A new UK physical game version with this dlc included is coming out soon. I was worried that if it was a game bug, it would be too late for them to change it in time and the cartridge would ship with this bugged game version on it, needing a day one patch to fix.
If it's just an eshop bug then I guess/hope everything is fine with the new physical release.
At first I thought this was a Resi crossover. Kinda disappointed now lol
@Andee agreed!
@Tangerine it must be an eshop bug if the codes to reviewers work, meaning there’s nothing wrong with the game. It’s like there’s just a bad link when it comes to buying it, like it doesn’t exist on the eshop.
But I stand by my SONY paying off DOTEMU theory, loads of people have got it on PS4 now instead of waiting for the Switch version.
Been playing this on Switch for the past few days and LOVING it. Survival runs are so quick, fun and unique, I could see myself coming back for YEARS. And since you gain experience and unlock new moves for each playable character, there's always something more to work towards.
Still quite confused about the eShop technical issue - I actually was lucky enough to win a Siliconera / DotEmu Twitter Switch code giveaway, and much like the review codes, it downloaded and worked flawlessly. So the content is on Nintendo's servers and applying to the game just fine. The backend "bad link" theory is the best guess I have.
@HamatoYoshi The DLC was released for multiple platforms like the PC, Xbox, and Playstation all at the same time.
I don't know where you got this idea that Sony is paying for timed exclusivity on DLC content that's being released on a game that has already released on all systems a year ago, on the same date no less.
I hope you were joking because it came across like you were a Nintendo fanboy or something because they seem to like to dunk on Sony only for some reason.
edit: profile description checks out.
I still can't buy/download this DLC. When I use the eShop link/referral from the main menu of the game, it connects to the eShop but then gives me error code: 2811-6002. "There are no products being distributed at this time." Apparently I'm not the only one having this issue. And it's been over a week.
@bimmy-lee About the spoiler comment, it's not something you would find in regular gameplay. I'm not 100% sure if it was added as part of the game update like Training Mode or you needed to purchase the DLC for it, since I already owned the DLC on PC when I learned about it. I don't remember how to do spoiler brackets here, but you would not get that through regular gameplay.
Edit: Read a few more articles, you need the DLC purchased for this to work.
@HamatoYoshi Your theory falls apart when you consider Microsoft has 2 active storefronts with this DLC, Xbox and Windows Store, Steam has the DLC, as well as GOG, Epic, and likely any other store selling the content. So, was it Sony that paid a publisher off to delay Switch owners from giving that publisher more money, was it any of the other hosts, or perhaps the chance that Dotemu is telling the truth and there is a technical issue? Don't cut yourself with Occam's razor.
@bimmy-lee sorry about that... excitement spilling over....
@Knuckles seems a long time to sort out a bad link! There’s been crazier theories!
@russell-marlow of course my profile description checks out! That’s the weirdest thing I’ve read on here!
It really sucks to wait when you can already play this DLC on all the other platforms...
@HamatoYoshi I mean that you're a long term "Nintendo fan", which might show some bias given from your comments.
I hope Skate can come back. His walk cycle, or, roll cycle, was one of the most entertaining I've seen in a beat'em up.
@John_Koshiro In case you didn't know, both Streets of Rage 2 and 3 Skate are unlockables as Retro Fighters in the game. They announced this over a year ago in a trailer, so the animation you love is in the game.
The developers said that they couldn't add Skate back and have him be the way everyone remembered in the new art style. The game takes place 10 years after the original, and he wouldn't be the small fighter of the previous two games. He would have grown since then, and they didn't think it would reflect his playstyle properly on a fighter of Adam or Axel's size.
@NintendoJunkie - You’re wrong, it’s a spoiler. It’s not obscure. It’s exactly what I’d try when I’m able to purchase the DLC. I looked it up since you ruined the surprise. Have you played SOR3?
Edit - Blech, nice edit.
Streets of Rage 4 is a lot of fun. It's not perfect (very unbalanced difficulty spikes, forces you to start levels all the way at the beginning when you lose all your lives), but it's a lot of fun. Having said that, this is DLC like DLC for Age of Calamity that I have no interest in. I played the game. I beat the game. I'm ready to move on and play other games.
Top marks all around for the devs. They did almost everything right, and the things they didn't were fixed with a patch (Axel buffs).
If only the Battletoads remake had even an inch of the soul in this game.
@Knuckles - Yeah, I tried both methods from SOR3 at launch and after the update, but they didn’t work. Can’t wait to finally be able to purchase this DLC.
@Vriess it says very clearly in the article that it's not available right now.
@kingbk great of you to let us know.
@ITATTRACTS
Yes... I know... If the DLC is unavailable, then why make press statements about it's release and advertise it in-game? There's a issue and I'm curious to know what it is.
@bimmy-lee I have a question about your two methods, but will experiment with spoiler brackets below before I ask. Question will be edited in shortly.
I am only aware of unlocking Roo in Streets of Rage 3 from his boss fight. What other methods are there, and why would you try Up+B and Start on the game's title screen?
@Knuckles - You got it, I put them in my last post so you could quote and see what to do. Ask away.
Edit - @Knuckles - Up+B is one of the ways to unlock Roo in SOR3 on the Genesis/MD. The other way is to trigger the secret mid boss fight and beat Roo’s trainer without beating Roo. I’ve tried every weird thing possible in Barbon’s level to get Roo to come out from behind the bar, but it just doesn’t seem to be a method in SOR4 unless something changes with the DLC, so it appears Up+B is the only way.
@bimmy-lee Question edited in above.
@ThomasBW84
Hi Thomas. I hope to see an article on NL soon about the approval process of Nintendo, using this as a case. I find it so unfair that Dotemu is catching all the heat, while Nintendo is not stepping forward with any information. Are they doing their best to get this approved asap? I'm very disappointed with Nintendo right now.
Cannot wait to play it. Love this game so much. Best in the series by far even without the dlc.
@bimmy-lee I thought you had to hold Up and B once the boss battle ended to unlock Roo? You can just do it on the title screen in SoR3? If that's true, I think I combined the two unlock methods in my head. No wonder I thought you would never encounter it in normal gameplay. I've also spent the last week wondering how anyone knew to do that at the title screen.
Also, thanks for showing how to do spoiler bars. I haven't used them in years here and just forgot the formatting.
Such a tease Nintendolife to post this without it being available and no idea when it will be available.
it would be nice if we could assign ZL/ZR to actions in the game
@Knuckles I heard about the retro fighters but I assumed they only included ones for the characters who returned.
As indicated by my lack of knowledge, Streets Of Rage 4 is in my backlog right now. I went out of my way to get a LRG bundle so I'm definitely going have to play it soon.
That's great to hear that Skate is at least in the game. However, even with the admittedly reasonable logic that Skate was excluded because of the time gap and the effect it would have on his playstyle, I would still love to see him back in action.
@John_Koshiro You are not alone with wanting Skate back, and the game launched with every previously playable Streets of Rage Character besides Ash and Roo. That means there are 4 playable versions of Axel and Blaze in this game.
@bimmy-lee sorry
@NintendoJunkie - Don’t sweat it friend, I was mostly just grumpy that I still can’t play this. I always assumed you know who was in this, I just didn’t want it confirmed. Whatever. It’s not gonna take away anything but a small moment. Glad you enjoy this game and the DLC. Grand upper!
I don't see how anyone could read about DLC for a year old game and complain about Spoilers. This game is fantastic and I can't wait for the new Ninja Turtles game they are making to come out. Let's hope DLC for that game doesn't take nearly as long. Also if they do Golden Axe please let if be a revenge of Death Adder sequel because that arcade game is great and I really wanna pitchfork stab people as trix
