In 2019, Sega and Sumo Digital released Team Sonic Racing across multiple platforms. While it didn't receive anything like DLC in the end, it seems the retail version of the game for Switch and PlayStation will be getting a special package update to celebrate Sonic's 30th Birthday.
According to Sonic fansite Tails' Channel, the "same" retailers who revealed the existence of Sonic Colors Ultimate and Sonic Origins ahead of schedule, have now reportedly lifted the lid on a 30th Anniversary Edition of Team Sonic Racing. It's believed to be a repackaged version and a separate listing showing the box art suggests an art book will be included, too.
This edition of Team Sonic Racing is expected to arrive on 27th October this year, according to the same online retailers. Sega has not made any official announcements about a special edition of TSR at this point in time, and previously re-released TSR in a double-pack with Sonic Mania.
Would you be interested in picking up this game (again), if it was packaged with some extra goodies? Leave a comment below.

Odd of Sega to give the almost two year old Team Sonic Racing an anniversary edition over Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
If they put in everything from Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Transformed, then sure!!!
I’ll probably bite. I love all things Sonic.
My guess is that they're doing this since the original game didn't really do all that well, and the online community is basically dead (hell is kinda already was months after launch) and they're trying to re-spark interest, but me being one of the 15 people that bought this when it first launched, I'm kind of upset they're doing this since I just want the art book
Give us Sonic R!!!
I wish Sega would do a updated version of Sonic Generations or even do 3D Sonic collection.
Just give us an HD/60 fps version of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Transformed (with all characters unlocked), and I'm sure EVERYONE will be happy and content!!!🤗
@JedRock Nah man make me work for unlocks!
Sega's double packs seem like odd choices, you get Mania and TSR in one and Forces and Monkey Ball Banana Blitz in another. Wouldn't it make more sense to put Mania and Forces together since they are connected in story (even if that connection is weak at best), and then Monkey Ball and TSR together since they're both more party-like games.
Would get if it it had all the content from transformed... missed opportunity Sega.
Nintendolife or Sonic life?
@Doofenshmirtz I actually loved Team Sonic Racing and found the team mechanics very unique. Really enjoyed playing through the story mode in it's entirety.
Yes if there was a good chunk of extra content.
No, if it was packaged with some extra goodies and these were bits of collectors rubbish 😱
Give us the Outrun 2 track from ‘Transformed’
@Clyde_Radcliffe Yeah, same. It's quite underrated.
So is SEGA going to release anything in 2021 that they dont leak before hand? Because so far it has been literally everything
GET OUT OF THE FRICKIN' CAR, SONIC..
@Jayenkai : Yeah. I still don't understand why "Sonic Racing" is even a thing...
Unless all of the characters were on foot.
It's a better game than most people think, more "racing" than Mario Kart 8, with two gameplay modes (solo and team) and a story mode with challenges. However, I wish that Sega remastered Sonic Generations and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed including all the tracks of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing because they are older games.
Maybe if they gave us the first 2 sonic racing games I'd bite but just an art book? Hard pass
I wish they would bring Sonic Racing Transformed over, I have always wanted to play that one with its all-star lineup of Sega characters.
I would had prefer just a port of Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transform instead. I know that game had license characters in the mix too but those could easily be replaced with Sega's own characters so the port is entirely possible.
Team Sonic is worse than the previous two sega racers in my opinion. Like why would this one be pushed it's still very recent too
This is probably just out of desperation to sell copies of a game that is usually generously discounted.
They already bundled the game with Sonic Mania to try to get it to sell.
A real shame this barebones game (apparently) won't get more content for the re-release. What a poor support.
Are they just simply re-releasing the exact same game but with a bundle of some art book or something? Because that... would be kinda dumb... who is gonna wanna buy the exact same game again just for a book? I mean, I no doubt there will be buyers but is basically an overpriced art book at this point. Considering the game isn't all that good and the little fun that it had has long since passed, not sure how much this will sell but I dount it will be a big seller, scalpers may probably become their biggest buyers.
@IndoorHero Yeah, evidently they mean the 30th anniversary of Sonic as a character, but it's misleading at best to rerelease a 3 year old racing game supposedly in celebration of that
It would have been a guaranteed purchase if it was a Transformed remaster.
@John_Koshiro It is in a way because Transformed is a far superior game to TSR in my opinion and deserves to be on modern platforms.
But the reason TSR is getting this anniversary edition is because they are literally taking unsold physical copies of the two year old TSR (already on modern platforms) and repackaging it in a special box with an artbook.
For Transformed, they would have to put in substantially more effort to remaster elements of the game and port a game that isn’t on these platforms yet. It is odd that they are doing this though and I would love Transformed on Switch.
Out of every game to celebrate Sonic's 30th....
They're gonna re-release this one?
Sonic character is 30 yo, I gt it. But they really will release a game that is not 30 with a packaging saying that it is the 30th anniversary edition?
The "Sonic 30" logo is OK, but that red label on top made it looks that the game is 30.
So is the art book that comes with this game a 30th anniversary art book? Cause if so that’s super lame they’re bundling it with this game instead of Sonic Colors. Colors is at least a main series game that’s being completely remastered… this looks like it’s just the same spin-off game with little to no extra content. Kinda sus.
My guess is they just had extra unsold copies of Team Sonic Racing lying around and want to sell them all.
@BlueOcean I agree, I had a lot of fun with Team Sonic Racing, honestly, it's one of my favorite Switch games.
It's nice to see an artbook included for new players. I have no plans on buying it again, except on PC when there's a sale, just to be able to play it there too.
@Silly_G Sonics the fastest thing alive. If all the characters were on foot why would they even bother racing?
All Stars Racing Transformed, was, is and always will be the better racing game. Why can't SEGA just admit that and just build off of that one instead?
Looks neat, I might pick it up since I don’t own the game but am curious about the art book. Sega is putting out a fair amount of merchandise to celebrate the 30th anniversary it seems.
@duffmmann Europe actually got a Sonic Mania Plus and Sonic Forces bundle, it had the artbook and the Mega Drive reversible cover for Mania Plus.
It was a cardboard cover that had two Switch game cases and the artbook inside.
On-topic: I agree with others on that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed would've been a better option than Team Sonic Racing. Maybe a version of Transformed with the Team modes of TSR.
I might get this one, though. I still don't have Team Sonic Racing, not even the awkward Sonic Forces double pack and the artbook might go along with the Sonic Mania Plus one.
Oh how I wished this game would have been either an updated Sonic Racing Transformed or Sonic Racing Transformed 2.
Team Sonic Racing is an okay game, but I think its biggest fault is it is not Sonic Racing Transformed. It is just missing that unique spark that made Sonic Racing Transformed so special.
SEGA doubled down on the Sonic Universe for this game. But in my opinion, the SEGA Universe worked much better for a racing game.
Even though I own TSR, I rarely play it.
However, I frequently play 2012's Sonic Racing Transformed either on the Wii U or Steam. These days on Steam with settings turned all the way up, it still looks pretty good. But being nearly a 10 year old game, an update modern version would be nice.
well two reasons online died. you could only form teams for matchmaking on ps an xbox and, for some unholy reason, you couldn't join a lobby with a race in progress. the key thing that lets lobbies fill...they didn't do.
you really just have to wonder about sumo digital sometimes.
@Silly_G @Jayenkai - Not that silly "Sonic would beat them all on foot" argument again. It's not a platform game, it's a racing game.
Why is Bowser and his minions being such good little participants in Mario Kart 8? Why aren't they blowing up the tracks from an airship and ruining it for everyone? 🙄
But yes, where the heck is Transformed (should run at 60fps now too)? I loved that game and the tracks had a decent length for once, unlike MK8 which made me feel ripped-off with its tiny tracks. Although MK8 was my favourite due to its active online multiplayer.
After reading some comments, I like the idea of combining Sonic and Sega All-Stars and Sonic Racing Transformed into one modern game.
Sometimes SEGA confuses me.
I mean even if they had to drop Ralph and Danica or any other 3rd party special characters because of any licensing deals, it would have been no real loss and still been a more fun game.
This is an excellent game and looks really good on Switch, especially in handheld mode, where so many games fail to impress these days. Highly recommended.
Well, I'm glad I've been on the fence about this one. I like art books!
I would hope a re-release would add at least 1 more racing team, though. I'm still bummed at the lack of Cream the Rabbit.
@Sunsy Yeah, I have it on Series X and it runs at 4K 60fps 😊.
@BlueOcean 60 FPS is the best benefit to the PC versions. I also have Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on PC (in addition to Wii U) because of a sale years ago, runs really nice.
@LArachelDisciple This was my only disappointment, considering the teams reminds me of Sonic Heroes, I feel Cream should have been on Team Rose. Still love the game otherwise.
@Sunsy I have Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on Wii U and Xbox but unfortunately the Xbox version was not enhanced for Xbox One X. Sonic Generations was but just the resolution.
Double pack is worth more
Maybe they have improved it quite a bit, so they are releasing the definitive edition now, the game they wanted to release originally.
If it's close to Transformed in quality, I'd probably bite.
would rather have an updated version of sonic and sega all stars racing ... coz billy hatcher was playable, not biased or anything just want my egg rollin son of a gun back XD
A port of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed would be prefered, an absolute classic game. Sonic Team Racing was a strange step backwards for the series.
I don't know. I don't have any sonic racing games, if it's good, I'll buy.
@Marioracer I dunno ... maybe just EASIER to unlock, I guess... coz the last few characters were a nightmare (for me) to unlock (from what I can recall)... so, not trying to go through that whole process again. Maybe some other things to unlock like, parts or color customizations like in Team Sonic Racing
So Steam version fix WHEN?!
This is an odd business choice considering how poorly the original release did... (The online servers died almost immediately). Not the games fault, just poor timing since MK 8 was already established, on top of CTR making the rounds soon, but still.
I dunno why they still don't make a new generation release of Sonic and all stars racing transformed, you know, the one people actually LIKED (not even for psn), but whatever.
@Hikingguy same reason they don't re release sonic 3 because of its ties to MJ.
@Nalverus 4 reasons actually. Those two you mentioned, plus this game came out RIGHT around mk 8's peak, and CTR was making the rounds. And the new team boost mechanic, while unique and clever, was too alienating for people to choose team sonic racing over other established cart racers.
I'll probably get this title once it goes on sale on Steam since it's just "repackaged".
