Sonic Colors: Ultimate is SEGA's showcase release for its famous mascot's 30th anniversary this year, bringing the well-regarded Wii-exclusive to a range of platforms, from the fanciest new 4K machines to the versatile Switch. It's not far away, due on 7th September, so there's a new trailer (above) to showcase benefits and new features in this enhanced version.
It gives a look at the boost to visuals, in addition to the doubling of framerate to 60fps - here's hoping the Switch version can deliver that full-fat framerate along with solid HD visuals. There are new features, too - the standout may be Rival Rush, where you race Metal Sonic on various courses to earn rewards.
Beyond that there are 'Park Tokens' to earn for customisable bits and bobs, a new 'Jade Ghost' wisp that allows Sonic to go through walls and find secrets, control customisation options, 'Tails Save' items that will retrieve you from falls, temporary invincibility when you collect 100 rings and, finally, a remixed soundtrack.
As you can see at the end the neat physical editions will come with a cute Sonic keychain, while a 'Digital Deluxe' edition will let you play early and have some extra customisable skins etc, because it seems most games need a deluxe version like that.
We reckon it all looks rather good; let us know if you're excited about Sonic Colours: Ultimate!

I'm probably getting this on PS5 for 4K support and definite 60fps performance. I was going to get it on PC but Epic Store means the mod support isn't going to be nearly as robust as Steam's and that's usually why I bought Sonic games on PC at all, and I know the Switch version will probably be handicapped in some ways like Forces on Switch was
Looking forward to this as I missed it first time around!
Looking forward to it though it's a shame they didn't include the DS version as a bonus!
In fact a "modern" handheld Sonic collection is long overdue. Imagine... Sonic Advance 1, 2, 3, Sonic Rush 1, 2, Sonic Colors DS, Sonic Generations 3DS and Sonic Riders 1, 2...
There's enough games for two collections! And I may have forgotten some too? Would be a hell of a lot more exciting than the hundredth re-release of the Genesis /Mega Drive games.
This is the best sonic since sonic adventure, in my opinion.
@Clyde_Radcliffe There was that Sonic Bioware RPG on DS too.
@Clyde_Radcliffe not sure they count as gems, but how about Lost World 3DS and the 2 Boom 3DS games?
Have this pre-ordered on Switch but tempted to get the Xbox One version instead if the Switch version struggles graphically....
Wow look nice, can't to see how it looks on the oled as the Wii SD quality didn't do the game much justice and the fact that Sega didn't release a single Sonic game on the PS Vita so we never get to see Sonic in gorgeous oled quality.
@BANJO It's a Wii game, not sure why it'll struggle on Switch.
I hated the controls on the original, movement felt “floaty”, even for sonic
@Ghost_of_Hasashi True, struggle is not the correct wording to use. I have the Wii version, it ran fine for a Wii game. However, the Xbox One version will no doubt run even better than the Switch version, unless they port it poorly...
I may wait and see how they compare before deciding which version to get...
Portability dosen't factor in for me as I only play docked, so the Xbox One version could be the better option..
I'll most likely get it once it's on sale. I've already played and beaten the game. I do remember enjoying it!
If the Switch can manage 1080p 60fps, I might give it a whack.
@Dezzy IKR?
Come on give it to me already, I have been waiting years. Also its kinda worrying that they haven't told us if we can turn off help or not.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi crash trilogy was a PlayStation game yet it struggled on the switch.
Does Metal Sonic attack you in a Mario Kart-esque fashion during the Rival Rush mode?
If so, I might be interested in getting this.
@sixrings Crash was also a complete remake from the ground up on a new engine and a completely new graphical style that was specificially optimized first for PS4 and then ported to other platforms
@sixrings You're reminding me of how I so wish that the Crash trilogy and CTR were made to run at 60fps instead of 30. Would be much more fun to play those games with graphics closer to PS1 and twice the frame rate. I've heard you can actually play CTR at 60fps on a hacked Switch. If only Nintendo could allow boosted clocks, like I promise I'll point a fan at my Switch so it doesn't overheat!
Looks like fun. I'll play this on my sweet OLED Switch. 60fps on an OLED screen really is fantastic. Games look awesome on my old Vita and hopefully this new Switch screen is as good or better.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi
It's the Switch. Anything not pixel art (if even that) struggles.
@Dezzy Skyward Sword HD is also aiming for that, I think. And SS is also a Wii game.
But we wait and see for now
Can we get Unleashed and Generations on switch too please
@anoyonmus
Yeah but Nintendo is a more skilled developer across the board.
I pre ordered it for series x I can’t wait. You can’t go wrong with good sonic levels and this is just a bunch more of them
This is one of the best sonic games out there
@sixrings Ya, as fry has said crash was made for the ps4, and it wasn't that bad on the switch.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi you can play sonic games on your (oled) tv? Or do you meant 3d sonic mainline games on oled handheld devices?
"in addition to the doubling of framerate to 60fps - here's hoping the Switch version can deliver that full-fat framerate along with solid HD visuals"
As far as I remember, it had been announced that the Switch version will only be 30fps...
As long as the fps is locked at a stable 60fps with minimum pop in, I'll be getting this on the Switch.
I loved Sonic Colours on Wii, and would be interested in this for the additions, but I'm getting really fed up of content in a remake being cut out and held in digital "deluxe" editions. So basically the full experience is digital-only.
@Reprise I am sure that this game CAN run at 60 FPS on switch but Sega will be probably keep it at 1080p 30 FPS because it’s Sega
Did it say 4K graphics for X1 and PS4????
Many people probably own an Xbox One S and a base PS4 and THOSE consoles don’t run at 4K at all. Only the PS4 pro and Xbox one X run at 4K.
@BrintaPap Well this will be the first time I'll get to play a Sonic game on an oled screen. The PS Vita never had a main Sonic game and that PSP Genesis Collection which had Sonic 1 & 2 were never sold in PS Store so I couldn't get it on Vita. Also I don't own an OLED TV, couldn't afford one. I had been watching and gaming through LED and SD screen for the last few gens.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi oh alright, I bet you will enjoy the screen. Got myself an oled tv 2 years back, never going back to lcd.
