Re: Nintendo Plugs Its NSO Zelda Games Ahead Of Skyward Sword HD's Release

Heavyarms55

@YoungLink64 And I would agree with you and say that it is wrong to just take a game for free. But I, personally, usually have no issue with people who need to download a rom for a game that they do physically own. Because that is something you would be able to do, should you have access to the proper adapters. Like that Game Boy one they showcased on NL not too long ago. - But I do understand that some people would not be okay with even that, and I totally understand.

Actually I'll be getting one of those devices at some point because I have a lot of Game Boy and GBA games. I'd really like to get one for my N64 collection too. But said company hasn't released one for that system, yet.

Re: Nintendo Plugs Its NSO Zelda Games Ahead Of Skyward Sword HD's Release

Heavyarms55

@YoungLink64 Emulators and emulation are fine technology in my opinion. My issue is with piracy, which is a separate but related issue. Something like NSO or Sony's PS1 games on PS4 are examples of Emulators doing nothing wrong.

And I have nothing but respect for the folks that painstakingly build them from scratch as a hobby.

But fan made Emulators are often used by folks who pirate entire game libraries. And that's so unfair to all the developers, artists, musicians, writers and everyone else involved with the creation of those games. They put years of their lives into that work. They deserve to be paid for their work. And as far as I am concerned, it should not matter if that work happened last year or 30 years ago. They deserve fair market value or even the right to not sell their products, if they choose to.

Re: Sakurai Reminds Us There's Only One DLC Fighter Left For Smash Ultimate (Again)

Heavyarms55

@YoungLink64 Even folks you know irl? That's a shame. I often complain about online Fandoms because most are pretty toxic, the worst being Pokemon, Star Wars, Smash and Sonic in my experience.

But generally people I deal with irl aren't nearly as bad. People irl don't have that shield of a username and a screen. It's a lot harder to be a raving jerk in person and avoid the consequences of treating people like crap in person. Lol

Re: Nintendo Plugs Its NSO Zelda Games Ahead Of Skyward Sword HD's Release

Heavyarms55

I'm gonna be that guy this time.

Nintendo, NSO needs better support. I defended the service for a long time because we were led to believe that there would be a steady stream of content updates. And while I know the pandemic through a wrench into everyone's plans, you can still do more.

Hobbyists working from home have gotten homebrew emulators for a LOT more than just NES and SNES on Switch.

Game Boy/Color/GBA. N64. Where are games from these systems? Even Gamecube should be feasible.

At this point I'm done defending the service. It's 20 bucks a year, and that's dirt cheap. And you know what? It feels dirt cheap too.

I would pay for a premium service if it did have a halfway decent selection of games from these systems.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Switch OLED Announcement Leave The Rumoured Switch Pro?

Heavyarms55

@YoungLink64 If Nintendo were to return to a dedicated home console, I have no doubt they would be able to build something comparable to other machines at that point. But we've seen what it's like having 3 very similar devices on the market, it's not ideal.

If you're looking for that top tier home console experience, then yeah, you're looking at Sony or MS for the time being.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Switch OLED Announcement Leave The Rumoured Switch Pro?

Heavyarms55

@YoungLink64 Let me ask you this, I've looked around the web at a lot of hardware and prices. If Nintendo were to build something like this, and release it this year:

An OLED screen Switch that supports 1080p in portable and 4K via upscaling on TV, has minimum 6 hours of battery life even during intense gaming sessions, built in 256gb of storage with two microSD card slots for additional storage, metal build, glass screen, joycons and pro-controller in the box, with significantly greater power under the hood, say, comparable to a base Xbone or PS4 or even slightly better.

Would you buy that for the 600+ USD that it would cost? Do you think that even a slight majority of the current install base of the Switch would upgrade to a system with those capabilities at that price range? You have to keep in mind the size of the Switch and the space they have to work with inside. I'm just eyeballing this, but you could fit probably 6 full Nintendo Switches inside the case of the original PS4. Prices rise rapidly when you shrink components down. I actually think my estimate is very low end of what a device like the one I described would cost. I think it could push as high as 800 USD based on some of the numbers I've seen for prices of mobile CPUs, graphics chips and the like.

Have you ever looked into how much modern smartphones cost if you buy them straight without any extra discounts or plan deals? Those push well over 1000 dollars and though in some measures are way more powerful, but you still need to jump through hoops to make them function the way a Switch does. You could do it, but it would require a bunch of additional 3rd party accessories on top of that phone's price.

Nintendo understands that people often already have that 600-800 dollar computer in their pocket. They know the Switch is a luxury item, not a necessity. So they worked very hard to release the Switch at the price point it's at and that's a big big part of why the Switch has been such a success.

I think that, if there were no shortages of chip production, as well as if the pandemic hadn't messed up global parts and shipping supply lines, Nintendo would have lowered the Switch's prices by now. But that's not the world we live in.

And yes, you don't need a 600 dollar smartphone, you can get much cheaper models, but for many many people, a phone like that is very important for their jobs or school. So it's still a much easier sell than a gaming device that they want purely for fun.

But back on my original questions, I am very curious if you would buy a device like the one I described and if you think enough other people also would. I personally think that they'd be laughed out of the room. I know I'm not spending 600+ dollars on a game console.

Re: New Poké Lid Alert: It's Vulpix's Time To Shine

Heavyarms55

Ha, I'd like to see you try and pick one of these up and walk off with it. Go ahead. I wont stop you, because if you succeed, you'd prove yourself to be basically super human. These things are insanely heavy. You're not just casually picking one up and walking off with it.

Re: Yep, Nintendo Is Teaming Up With 'Edible' For Mario Kart Snack Gifts

Heavyarms55

When I saw this title, I absolutely misunderstood what you were talking about. When talking about "edibles" where I live, they are perfectly legal but not for children.

@CammyUnofficial That what we refer to is considered a progressive thing still baffles me. Most of the opponents of it are always arguing against regulation and for the free market. Yet they oppose themselves on this one thing because it's popular with people they don't like, or still believe in fictional propaganda from the 1920s...

Re: Random: Neopets Or Pokémon? Why Choose, When You Can Have Both

Heavyarms55

Love seeing more fanart. There's lots of talented people out there that deserve more love. I still think this website could do with a weekly or monthly kind of "Feature Fan Art" articles. It could be a mixture of art that NL people have found and/or fan submissions.

Art is such a lovely way to bring fans of different things together, or to introduce people to potential new hobbies and interests.

Re: Nintendo Employee Tells Fans To Stick With The Current Switch, If They're Not "Digging" The OLED Screen

Heavyarms55

@YoungLink64 No, wanting a decent piece of hardware for the price is fine. The Switch is easily your best bang for your buck. Find me a comparable device in the same price range with the same features and a relatively comparably software library that doesn't rely on piracy. I'll save you the time and let you know that no such device currently exists on the market.

The entitled crybabies I'm talking about are all the people who are just losing their minds that all those nonsense rumors that they had just accepted as fact because Bloomberg and Eurogamer reported them. A 4K Switch with no divided game library, improved CPU and graphics and all the other random upgrades those rumors were talking would be a huge price jump. There's no universe where any company in 2021 could release a device like that in the 300-400 dollar range and not just be burning money. Especially when you factor in the global chip shortage, pandemic messed up supply lines and shipping issues and more.

Re: Switch OLED Trailer Shows Tweaked Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Footage

Heavyarms55

@Pokester99 Know what I do when I stop liking something? I stop buying it and move on. Or focus on older entries I still enjoy. I will never understand the people who keep buying new titles of something that they have nothing but issues with.

Even more irrational are the people get angry because other people like something they don't.

Re: Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Gets A Release Date And Setting

Heavyarms55

Oh what? Is this the same Test Drive series I played on PS1 in the 90s? Test Drive 5 was one of the first games I ever got as a kid.

Admittedly mostly because my dad was a big car guy. Personally the realistic racing genre never really interested me. But it was kinda cool seeing real world cars in a video game at the time. And I remember thinking the game had pretty cool music.

Re: Here's A Look At The Official Carry Case Releasing Alongside The Switch OLED

Heavyarms55

I don't like soft body cases. If you put it in a backpack or suit case with something harder, like a textbook or laptop, it doesn't really do anymore than wrapping it up in an old t-shirt.

I bought a two cases for my Switch, one for just the Switch, it's hard body outside, so it holds its shape and protects its contents. And the inside is all nicely padded. And I bought a similar case large enough to fit the dock and pro-controller for longer trips, same general idea though.

It's largely because of those cases, that my day 1 Switch is still in almost new condition even after thousands of play hours and thousands of miles of travel - literally - I've brought it on trans-Pacific flights 3 times, taken it all over Japan and parts of the US.

Re: Should I Buy A Switch OLED? Which Nintendo Switch Is Best For Me?

Heavyarms55

I really want to see it for myself before I buy, because it's really hard to demonstrate screen quality differences over another screen. But from what I know of OLED screens, it should be a nice upgrade. The audio upgrade should be nice too, the Switch's speakers always felt pretty lackluster to me. Low max volume and only slightly, if at all, better than 3DS. But if this thing still doesn't support Bluetooth audio - and they didn't mention that - that's a frustrating annoyance. The tech is there. People have taken OG Switches apart and stated that it's only software that's not allowing that function.

I don't play in portable as much as I used to because of the pandemic, moving and job change. But I still love having the option to do so whenever I feel like it. Sometimes I'll lay in bed with my Switch, even though my main TV is in the same room.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Switch OLED Model Looks Lovely, But May Also Disappoint

Heavyarms55

@ModdedInkling People walked right into this. There was nothing, I mean nothing concrete to support the rumors (rumours? Is that the British spelling?).

So-called leaks and anonymous sources without even pictures or documents to back them up? The way I see it, it's one of the following:

1. Speculation based on circumstantial evidence that suggests the outcome they claim.

2. Wild speculation based on little to no evidence at all or only the vaguest "industry trends" - which is always a terrible way to judge Nintendo, because they don't care what industry trends are and do what they want for better or worse.

3. Malicious intent - fake leaks made up by people credible enough to be taken seriously or fake leaks made up by someone impersonating someone with credibility or fake leaks made up by the news outlet to generate buzz and attention. Only to have this "disappointment" happen and let them write more articles.

Re: Yes, Switch OLED Works With Your Old Dock

Heavyarms55

I never doubted this would be the case. But it's good to have it confirmed. If/when I do upgrade, I will probably put my old dock in the living room for when people come to visit. And I'll probably set up my original Switch as a family unit after I transfer everything over.

Re: Nintendo's Switch OLED Dock Can Be Purchased Separately

Heavyarms55

It's nice that they offer this but I do find it strange not to sell in retail.

Then again, it's 2021. They probably don't want to deal with the idiots who can't read coming back to the store and complaining that there was no Switch in the box, just a dock.

You know that would happen. And you know it would happen often.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Switch OLED Model Looks Lovely, But May Also Disappoint

Heavyarms55

LOL. Seriously? If you guys were actually taking those crazy rumors seriously then you honestly brought the disappointment on yourself.

If the "Switch Pro" had released with all the crazy stuff people were basically treating as "fact" then it would have probably been 450-600 dollars.

And yes, I told you so. I have been saying for years now that you shouldn't take all the rumors seriously. Even those from so-called "reputable" sources like Eurogamer and Bloomberg. I was right, people were either throwing mud at the wall with wild guesses, or were maliciously making things up to generate clicks - and not just to generate clicks on those articles. Now that we have the simple upgrade that we got, all those outlets can profit off of the "disappointment" that is the upgrade that we were never promised and had no reasonable reason to believe was coming.

Re: "King Pokémon" Attracts The Ire Of Fans Over Comments Regarding Famous Artist's Signature

Heavyarms55

If the main thing you're proud of, is the monetary value of your collection, then you're not a fan. You're an investor. What I don't like about this story is that his attitude strikes me very mush as thinking he's better than other people because of his gross, irrational greed.

There's nothing wrong with investment if money is what you care about in life. In fact, it's honestly probably one of the best ways to potentially make money.

But if you think I'm going to have any respect for someone just because of your wealth, you're out of your mind. When people have that kind of money, it's more about denying that wealth to those who need it and hoarding it to sate your greed.

Re: Netflix No Longer Works On Wii U Or 3DS, So Where's The Switch Version?

Heavyarms55

@TryToBeHopeful I believe that's a slightly different situation because both Xbox and PS5 are backwards compatible. They probably didn't have to do much of anything to just drop the app from one to the other.

Switch is not directly backwards compatible with Wii U, so they would have needed to port the apps. And while I doubt that would be very hard, it probably would take more effort and time.

It just makes no sense for Nintendo to say yes to YouTube, Hulu, Funimation and those comic and Manga apps, but no to Netflix, Amazon and CR.

Re: Netflix No Longer Works On Wii U Or 3DS, So Where's The Switch Version?

Heavyarms55

With SmartTVs and devices like Roku being so common these days, I think streaming services are just much less interested in apps on consoles. Nintendo allowed Hulu, Funimation, YouTube and a couple apps for comics and manga on Switch. So I simply do not believe that it's Nintendo blocking Netflix or Amazon or Crunchyroll etc etc... on Switch anymore. I think those companies just don't care enough.

Re: This Adapter Lets You Play Game Boy Cartridges On Your PC, And It Even Detects Fakes

Heavyarms55

@Kutal The difference is that you're using hardware and games you physically own that were purchased legally.

Piracy is hopping online and downloading the whatever you want from some website.

Think of it like a print of a work of art, if you want to fold it or take it out of its frame or cut it or whatever, that's fine. But if you scan it into a PC and start distribution of it all over the web, you're hurting the artist. No one is going to want to buy from the artist when they can just get a copy for free.

Re: Nintendo Fears A Popular ROM Website Could Make A Comeback

Heavyarms55

@LXP8 That's a different sort of issue. But I do agree that public domain laws will eventually need to be updated to deal with video games and software as well. But public domain laws generally are related to very old content.

Further, I fully support anyone who signs a contract with a company that passes on legal ownership of their work to another individual or corporation after they pass away. To me, that's the same thing as putting something in your will, so that your car will go to your child or your estate will be sold and the proceeds directed toward charity or whatever. If that sort of agreement is made, then it should be honored, no matter how old the content.

Re: This Adapter Lets You Play Game Boy Cartridges On Your PC, And It Even Detects Fakes

Heavyarms55

I quite like this device and am probably going to end up picking one up at some point. I heard they are working on a SNES one next, but the one I really want from them is N64.

@DiscoDriver44 Because not everyone is a filthy pirate, that's why. And even some of those filthy thieves would like to be able to pull their own save files from the few games they actually own legitimately.
